I didn't realize that most of the reviews were for screen doors and windows when I needed an inspection for my rental apartment with wood fireplace. The service was generally just salesy, even the follow up call with one of the owners, Shannon. The inspector and I talked over the phone while discussing the report. He said that the cap is missing this grill but the angle of the 2 photos were taken in such a way that it was not visible. He recommended switching my wood fireplace to gas which cost upwards of $20k when I am just looking to do the bare minimum. Not happy. read more

Adam and Phil from Den Defenders installed a new chase cover and cap on my dual chimney. Our chase cover was rusted and the surrounding wood trim was rotted. Whenever it rained, our chimney would leak. Adam and Phil removed the old chase cover and installed a new one that was custom fabricated at their shop in Stockton. They also installed a new chimney cap that is more up to code than the old shroud that was originally on my house. *This review has been updated since I initially left the former company a five star review half a year ago* I had a great initial experience in July of 2022 with this company when it was called Mike's Mobile. I scheduled a chimney and fireplace box inspection at my rental property, Anthony showed up when they said he was scheduled, and he even called me after to go over the inspection report. I paid the charge immediately for the inspection over the phone. Then, Anthony up-sold me on a handful of different upgrades for my rental property's fireplace box, including custom ordered glass doors. I paid my deposit for those upgrades immediately, too, which totaled over $2100. The custom glass work was to be done a few months later because they had to custom order the glass. Understandable. The only deadline I had was that I wanted to have the work completed before the cold weather began so my tenant could have cozy fires in their rental home. The day before the install, the first week of October of 2022, I got an email to confirm my appointment. The day of, a text stating the technician would arrive at my rental property at the agreed upon time. Great! Well, not so fast: A couple months later, my property manager notifies me that my tenant said the work to the fireplace had never been completed. My mind was blown! Well ok, it would be a simple fix so I called what is now Den Defenders, talked to Martina and told her what happened. I explained that since the work wasn't done yet, I would just like my deposit back and to call the job off. They dropped the ball so the agreement is voided. Not to them! They failed to perform the agreed upon services and they still want to do business with me and keep my money? No thank you. Anyway, I got the run around. Martina spoke to Mark, the "fireplace manager" and apparently they "can't" refund me my deposit which means they simply won't do that. After a few phone calls to Martina, I got the hint. If I called Martina right now, she would still claim that Mark will be calling me. But he won't. I now have a dispute opened with my credit card company which is how I paid the deposit. When I paid my deposit, I had a gut instinct that I listened to and used a credit card instead of another form of payment since I didn't have a positive track record with them. After the review I left for Den Defenders late last year, they contacted my husband and I and wanted to address the issues we had with them. They explained that ours was a "unique" situation and they were trying to come up with a more affordable option for us. They apologised for their lack of communication, which probably was the biggest issue we had. Mike, the owner of the company, and Toby came to our home, sat at our kitchen table and discussed what we needed, why we had the issues we had (too big an opening for the size of the flue, so smoke was coming into our home; and we had cracks in our chimney) and several options on how to fix the problems. Because of the smoke issue we weren't able to use our fireplace at all and as I talked about before, that was a big issue at our newly purchased home. We decided on one of the options they provided and they fabricated a smoke shield specifically for our fireplace. Now we are able to have fires during the cold winter months because of the changes they made. They also relined the flue for our chimney so the cracks won't cause a chimney fire (as there was already evidence of one prior to us moving in). We really appreciate them coming by and talking to us and spending the time to explain everything so we could make an informed decision that worked for us. They also made a beautiful chimney cap for us that really adds a lot to the outside of our home! I can't say enough about Toby and Mike going out of their way to make sure our previous experience was not what their company was about and making sure our fireplace was safe for our family to use.
