My original review was deleted on Google, so here is the updated review:
I saw Dr. Deniz Gerrechi for an initial consultation at OHSU Greystone to discuss major breathing issues and excessive nose bleeds in early 2020.
She performed a visual exam and took pictures. She did not perform any further exams, no x-rays, no CT scans, no camera scope, etc. I have spoken to numerous ENTs since the surgery and they found that to be lacking in the complete standard of care. Moreover, we discussed the purpose of the surgery: fix the deviated septum to allow for efficient breathing, reduce the inferior turbinates, and try to help reduce the nosebleeds. NO AESTHETIC CHANGES.
On July 6th, 2020 she performed my surgery (Septorhinoplasty with an Inferior Turbinate Reduction) to which I woke up puking up blood and proceeded to do so for the next 10 hours straight, finally stopping at 2am due to complete exhaustion. When coming out of surgery, the nurses did not allow me the chance to wake up and give feedback on how I was feeling, they just pumped more drugs into me, at which point was too much for my body to handle.
SIDE NOTE: I am not sure why she performed a Septorhinoplasty instead of just a Septoplasty as I never asked for aesthetic changes to be made. I was extremely adamant about my nose structure and appearance not changing.
The following days were complete hell. My nose tripled in size and the pressure built up to a point where I thought my nose was going to split open. So, I contacted her to get an early check-up, which was scheduled 3 days after the surgery took place. She examined my nose and stated that it was excessively swollen and she was going to prematurely take the plugs out to allow some airflow.
As the swelling slowly went down I started to notice the difference in the aesthetic of my nose. It was more of a beak shape instead of the very slim, straight, and pointy nose I had previously. My nostrils were deformed and the lower part of my nose was fat. My eyes had bags under them, much more so than before, and my facial structure seemed to have changed in a negative way.
I set up a follow-up appointment with Dr. Tom Wang in the Portland OHSU Clinic because Dr. Deniz Gerrechi was now on maternity leave. He stated that my septum is still deviated, my nose was beaking, etc. He then told me to "just sleep on your side and allow gravity to assist in your breathing."
At that point, I allowed my nose time to heal to see if things would get better but they continued getting worse. So I waited for Dr. Gerrechi to return from maternity leave. We had a follow-up appointment where she performed a visual examination and placed a snake camera up my nose to see what she had missed. She confirmed the aesthetic changes that WERE NOT supposed to happen, however, she did not take accountability. She stated that it was because of the excessive vomiting that took place after my surgery and confirmed that my septum is still deviated. She took more pictures.
After about a year, I couldn't handle it anymore so I contacted the hospital and my insurance to ask for help in how to mediate a conversation between myself and the doctors. They told me I need to contact the state's ombudsman, so I did. After being pushed around the entire system, which I had to navigate myself, I finally spoke to the ombudsman. The ombudsman told me they would do an investigation, which took six months to get a letter that said, "the standard of care was met", which is a complete lie.
It is going on 3 years since my surgery. My nose is different aesthetically, my breathing is way worse than before the surgery. I have had it confirmed by two ENTs that there is a hole in my septum, my nostrils are deformed, and my nose is beaking. And, I was told that I was to blame by the doctors and the institutions because of the vomiting, which the other doctors I have seen said vomiting happens in 85% of these cases for this surgery.
Psychologically, I have struggled greatly. Physically, I cannot breathe, my sleep has been terrible, and my nose/eye region has changed.
I have tried to be patient, I have tried to solve the situation, and I have been left with a botched nose surgery and no accountability for those responsible.
I would caution anyone thinking of going this route to find alternative doctors or options before moving forward. read more
