We were traveling from NJ to IN and we were looking for a place to each and stay for the night, unfortunately, Penn State had a home game at the time, so the hotel prices were way over priced. We were told it would be 2 hours to wait for a table, which we were fine with. We went next door to the Bottle Shoppe to look around while we waited. 10 minutes later, one of us went back in to check the status and ask for the bathroom and the hostess was extremely rude and refused to seat us unless we were inside that part of the building (while we were buying T-shirts at the Bottle Shoppe connected to the restaurant). She then proceeded to seat another group before us as we were sitting right there, claiming 'that's the owner, that's why they're being seated!' She then refused to get the manager. Once we finally got to talk to the manager she claims it was not in fact the owner. We came from 4 hours away specifically to try these famous burgers to be treated this way. This weekend, I went to visit some friends in Western PA, and on our way home from the Ridgway "Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous" - we thought we better take a pit stop at Denny's. This place is known for their "World's Largest Hamburgers" so I simply could not pass up this opportunity to chow down on such famous patties! The waiting area is literally one long line - no "take a number / take a buzzer" type of service. The tables and chairs are hard wood, nothing fancy. Know how to tell when you're in Western PA? The tables were laminated and full of advertisements about fracking equipment and services! Hel-lo Marcellus country! I heard about the options here: 2 pounder, 3 pounder, etc. and 15-pounder. I thought we should give the 15-pounder a whirl... just for the heck of it, right?. Little was I wrong. Instead, two of us split half of the 2-pounder and we were stuffed! Oh- and the largest on the menu is actually 125 pounds, and sells for $399.00! Our feast of the 2-pounder was actually only $17.99 which I found very reasonable! As for beverages - they don't serve tap water. Be prepared to buy a bottle of water, or just a pint of beer. I was able to try something new (to me) here: chocolate peanut butter stout! Scrumptious. Overall, a really poor experience. The waitress was unpleasant. When we asked what was good, she said everything. It's an 8 page menu, she really couldn't recommend something? We told her we were going to split a sandwich and it comes out not even cut in half. Went twice during my stay in the area. First was for fish on a a Friday nite. Fish was tasty even though it appeared as two squares on my plate. Was great tasting and satisfying, also had appetizer of pretzel logs with beer cheese and fried pickles. We were out of town for a funeral and stopped here for a drink. I like to try different beers and there were 40 on tap. I had chocolate milk porter. Thick and delicious! My second was a caramel macchiato porter-sweet and yummy! They offered 3 different sizes which is great if you are trying several. I counted 48 different types of chicken wings. This place is rather huge and rather busy. They specialize in burgers and beer and are known for their famous GINORMOUS burgers. We started with pickle chips and a delicious ranch sauce that had some fantastic additional spices. Very good Hubs and I both agreed! We both had a burger combo - house comes with homemade chips, which I love. However, the burger tasted great, but was considerably smaller than the bun and the chips were both cold and not crisp. For me, I could've gone to a fast food shop to have a not-awesome burger combo. Disappointing. Hubs also had a house combo, but upgraded to fries. He definitely won the round. My dad and I stopped into Denny's while passing through DuBois and Clearfield, and we were incredibly impressed with our visit! The staff was extremely friendly and attentive to our needs, and we felt very safe in the restaurant as the tables and menus had been cleaned and sanitized, and all staff and patrons adhered to wearing masks. Our meal was delicious! Everything was cooked fresh and was extremely flavorful. I enjoyed the Hillbilly Burger, which was cooked just the way I liked it and had just the right amount of topping to meat to bun ratio. This was my second trip to Denny's. I must admit I wasn't as impressed as I was during my first visit. My burger was tasty, but overall the experience just wasn't as good. First, I have to applaud this place. They handle large crowds really well. When we went in, we were told it'd be about a 30 minute wait. We had no problem waiting. Our wait turn out to only be about 15 minutes. It took a couple minutes for our waitress to get our drink order. Now, I will add that she was a bit busy. My family and I all ordered burgers, of course! We also ordered a basket of onion rings as an appetizer. The food took a really long time to come out. We waited probably close to 30 minutes for our food to come out. I thought that was a tad long for some burgers. Our onion rings came out with our burgers... that was a tad disappointing. And after waiting our food wasn't even hot. Lukewarm at best. It seemed like the food had been sitting awhile. My food was good. 2 members of my family had made comments that they hardly had any chips, something that certainly seemed out of character for Dennys. All in all, this trip was really just ok. Next time I'm in Clearfield, I'll be back. (I still think it's the best place to grab a burger in town.) Plus, I still want to try some of the beer that they have on tap! read more

I'm proud, being from California, that i have been here twice. once when the 6lb burger was the biggest and then a year later when they had the 15lb burger. it was a dark and stormy night back in 2000 or so and it was either food TV or travel channel had a show that featured this monster. i was in awe, but how would i ever get to the middle of PA? but then luck was on my side. i joined a band and we toured. we toured all over and luck again steered me within 3 hours of the burger. so i demanded that we wake up hella early, drive 3 hours the wrong way, eat that burger and then drive 6 hours back the other way for the next show. i had to call 3 hours ahead and put a credit card deposit down! on a burger! pretty funny. and this place is out in the sticks, but a very scenic drive. there's some fancy college near there that looked pretty nice. This location has a lot of positive things going for it. First, it's unique in Clearfield. Had it been established in a larger city, the other Gastropubs would have blown it out of the water. Second, it's large and can accommodate a lot of people. Third, the selections on the menu have something for everyone. The menu may take a bit of time to read. Things I would change: 1. The waitress did not have complete knowledge of the draft list, nor did she know what styles the beers were when asked. If you're going to boast crafts, your servers need to be educated. It's a competitive world out there now. Also, when a draft kicks, tell the servers via a white board or something. The back and forth was exhausting for everyone. 2. I wasn't asked what temperature my burger should be. You're a burger joint. This is really important. 3. The wings were absolutely swimming in sauce, and it was really sweet for a savory sauce. 4. Chips. When I was told the burger is served with chips, I automatically thought "pub chips", which are usually house made real potato chips with some awesome spice. These chips were like Snyder's BBQ. This is one area that could really up the game. 5. Waitress training in general. We asked a waitress what dessert people went there for. She could have said anything. Anything, and I would have believed her. Instead, she said people don't really come here for desserts. Yikes! 101: all of your products are amazing. Pick something. However, the reality is that they have a huge menu with mediocre food. On a recent trip into town a friend and I stopped in for an early dinner. The menu is huge and there are no substations allowed. There are NO gluten free options allowed unless you want plain veggies. Really disappointing when there are ten pages of food choices but not one includes a gluten free option. The beer on tap was pretty impressive. No gluten free beer in bottles or on tap. Local wines featured which is pretty cool but they are not that great. The merlot was actually very sour. Driving from State College to Ohio a stop to Denny's was to be the highlight of our trip. While fishing Penns Creek a few locals told us we had to stop here and try their world class burgers. If you're rating the meat for size this place hits a home run. Meanwhile, quality suffers. I arrived with one of my huge buddies. He's 6-5 and 375 pounds and wanted to destroy a two pound burger in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, it takes 45 minutes to cook (the larger burgers take longer). No one driving through wants to wait that long. On the other hand, if you're a big drinker there's ample beer on tap and an endless number of bottles to keep you content while you're waiting. There's also plenty of flat screens inside to pass time quicker. And, note that the outside isn't inviting, but the inside is more welcoming and far cleaner than you'd expect. While several parties ripped the service as they left, but we found nothing to complain about (and had a stunning, young, friendly, blonde server who did a great job). As for the food, it's meager, at best. We started with boneless wings, which were fine. They are far better than places like Hooters and Buffalo Wild Wings, but no where near as tasty as what you'd get at Otto's in State College. Still, if you're coming in to drink a few beers and hang out with buddies you'll enjoy them. It's too bad the quality of the meat isn't as impressive as the menu. The menu is loaded with options. There's multiple options with game meat, in addition to traditional burgers, turkey patties and more. More exciting is the toppings. There's more toppings here than you'd find in a salad bar at Golden Corral. Meanwhile, few taste fresh. In fact, our bacon seemed like it came out of a microwave. Very disappointing. If you're going to call yourself a famous burger joint - serve up great burgers and premium toppings, not just lots of beer. My elk burger was drier than a turkey sandwich with only bread. The burgers were largely a letdown. Most tasted like they were frozen patties. This isn't a food craving destination like we hoped it would be. For us, and many others, it's a one and done. And I'm so glad I did! The place is literally in the middle of nowhere but people seemed to consistently stroll in; a mix of locals and first-timers. When I saw the pub challenger on the menu I just had to get it. It's the 2lb challenge, you have 1 hour to eat it and no utensils. I was feeling pretty confident that I would conquer the challenge and I got off to a great start but half way in I hit a wall and such was the result. I came up short but the waitress gave me a B+. It's a pretty touch challenge, as only 3% finish, so come prepared. They let you remove 1 ingredient for the challenge, and I recommend the relish. NOW: Burger Challenge The bear attempted the 2 lb burger challenge. I have seen him eat 2lbs of beef before. Know going into this, if you're going to do it, it's mostly going to be a $20 burger you can't finish. It took a WHILE to make, like almost an hour. Our waitress explained the "only take one thing off" rule, he took onions off. So it finally came out, she started the clock, we got the picture. What you don't realize: there is a TON OF BREAD on this thing. And it's 2lbs of beef AFTER cooking. AND... it is SWIMMING in condiments. So what happens? The MOUNTAIN of gross bread gets soggy and cold. I don't like the smell of ketchup, and it smelled so bad I had to walk away. I knew he wasn't going to make it when he decided to take it apart and just work on the beef. The bread looked so gross. He tapped out after about 35 minutes. My strongest feeling about this place was how crummy our waitress was. She was grouchy and rude. I asked if I could get a menu-listed sauce on my burger, and she said " how am I supposed to do that?" Went to Denny's based on the recommendation of the front desk gal who very quickly prefaced it with it's not your ordinary Denny's rather it's locally owned and has appeared on various food and travel shows. Besides it was the only place opened at this late hour. We were very pleasantly surprised. Even though they had started cleaning we were warmly welcome to take a seat and order whatever we wanted. My colleague ordered steak. I had a rowdy reuben burger. It was great with a healthy portion. They also had a wide selection of other pub grub as well as some huge gastronomic belly busters The beer list was equally awesome. I had a tasty pint of southwick draft.
