Avoid this dental group unless you enjoy smug incompetence and perpetual pain. After bragging that she had already "installed 6 crowns that day," Dr. Sweeney left me in immediate and ongoing pain for weeks until I had to go to an endodontist for a root canal. She did not indicate how many of those crowns were installed correctly - I assume very few if any. Waste of money and time. I will not be using the endodontist they "recommended." Like a few others here, I've experienced extreme pain for months now following a filling at this office. I can't eat on the right side of my mouth. Ive been to several follow up visits and was even referred out to another office for some sort of special image. They could never find the root cause and associated it with the possibility that I may grind my teeth. I'm so depressed over the status of my mouth. It's been half a year now. Best dentist's office I've been to in Philadelphia. I became a patient at this practice in 2020 and all my experiences have been great. 1. I am always called back within ten minutes of my appointment time 2. At my prior dentist, I found the process of having a cavity filled extremely painful/long - there were times I truly wanted to get up mid procedure and leave because I couldn't tolerate it anymore. Afterwards I always had a sore jaw, my gums would be sensitive/cut up from the metal ring and sometimes even my lip would be cut. I was surprised to learn that it doesn't have to feel that way at all. Dr. Patel and his team re-did one of the fillings that my prior dentist had done poorly and they completed the procedure efficiently without causing discomfort 3. My prior dentist would work with too many patients at a time. When I would come for a 6 month check up, I would often be waiting in the patient chair for a long time before she would pop in to do the final exam. Here, the dentist comes in right after the dental hygienist is done and sends you on your way. I really appreciate and trust the entire Team. I used to have to block off 2-3 hours on my calendar for a dentist appointment and now I'm done in under an hour. Highly recommend! read more

I moved to Philly last year and initially I was able to find a dentist and had a good first time experience here. They were helpful, answered all my questions, and got me started on Invisalign, promising to get back to me with a quote and payment plan, which never happened. After a building flood, the office closed for a month, and when I returned for a cleaning, the experience was drastically different. They made me come back the following week for X-rays, which turned into an hours-long visit where they unexpectedly replaced all my fillings, leaving me in pain before a trip. I felt disrespected as they didn't inform me of the changes beforehand, and I was expected to pay for the entire Invisalign treatment and fillings (which I did) upfront without prior notice or a payment plan. The billing lady was pushy, coercing me to pay immediately, which made me uncomfortable. I felt incredibly gaslit and I realized that everything they told me was verbal and they never gave me any paperwork or made me sign anything--if you dont do payment plans, just let me know. But I do not like being surprised like that. They basically lied to me about all of this. Despite explaining my financial situation and request for a payment plan, they pressured me to pay $2,000 upfront, which I wasn't prepared for. The staff is otherwise great, but the finance team is rude and unprofessional. I had one of the worst follow-up phone calls with them as they made me feel guilty. I regret recommending this place to my husband, who also had a bad experience with them pushing unnecessary treatments and rescheduling his appointments multiple times. I was treated by Dr Sweeney for the first time in March of 2023. I have permanent tooth damage because of the fillings done at Dentists on the Square. I can no longer eat properly as there is constant pain on both sides of my teeth. I went back 3 times due to the pain and the problem still remains. To add insult to injury my gums also randomly bleed or I'll randomly taste blood in my mouth (had never happened before these fillings). She stated I had 10 cavities (I've never had more than 3 cavities but trusted her because she's a doctor). It's been 4 months and I am so personally hurt that my *permanent* teeth that were absolutely fine are now permanently damaged. *Giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the cleaning I had was normal* read more

In the Rittenhouse Square area of Philadelphia. The building... grand and the office... Elegant. Knew I was going to love it here. Everyone was polite, accommodating and professional. I went for a dental cleaning. I didn't know the place but I believed the reviews (which now I think may be old) and they carried my insurance. I was surprised when I walked in. The waiting room was not clean and the chairs, tables and floor felt gross. Not one of the employees was wearing N95 masks, the place was not ventilated and didn't have air filters for covid - just plexiglass pannels which do nothing. Some employees were wearing their masks down. I had to wait 40 minutes to be attended only to be told that my insurance plan didn't cover the cleaning. I could pay out of pocket, of course, but after wasting my time and experiencing a dirty place and unprofessional treatment I decided to walk away. I waited a week for the appointment and had to get time from my job. They had an abundance of time to inform me about my plan's lack of coverage, yet they never did. I noticed they implement a policy of charging for not-show appointments or late cancellations, yet they are insulting with respect to other's people time. If you want a dirty office, unprofessional treatment and potentially get COVID19...this is your place! read more

Every experience I have had here has been pleasant - event those with unpleasant circumstances! I was referred here by my regular dentist for an extraction. The extraction was smooth and pretty painless, but I developed a post-op infection. Dr Getru was incredibly helpful and responsive, going above and beyond to help me via text and even coming in on his day off and once after office hours to resolve the issue. Dr. Roberts also was a great help when Dr. Getru was not available, and was also very responsive and continued to track my progress even when Dr. Getru was back on the case. I recently had a dentist appointment, which was so painful that I never wanted to go back to the dentist. Unfortunately for me, I still needed more work done. (Insert: Annie Lennox "No More I Love You's") I became familiar with dentists on the square, and made an appointment to finish my dental work. (For those of you who are like why does she keep saying "dental work"... I needed a root canal and I am embarrassed to say it. Ok?) Anyway, Bonnie checked me in and offered me a coffee, thank you Bonnie! and Nicole came and checked on me, which was very kind! Dr. Stevie and Dr. Roberts, with the help of Vince, finished the dental work and it was literally pain free. Did I mention I hate pain?! They did this cool trick and I didn't even feel when I was shot with the Novocain. It was like what pediatricians do with children or someone childlike aka me. The sounds of the drills can some times get me but everyone made me feel so relaxed and I put my headphones on and listened to the spice girls. I became a patient at Dentists on the Square three years ago after moving to Philadelphia from Boston. My niece recommended the practice. I have been to the office many times as I have my teeth cleaned every three months. In approximately a dozen visits, I have never had to wait to see a clinician for a scheduled appointment. All of the staff have been friendly, courteous and professional. All procedures, checkups, cleanings and X-rays have been performed efficiently and with excellent communication, as well as concern for my comfort. Recently, Dr. Joseph Roberts extracted one of my rear molars. Dr. Roberts discussed with me the problem with the tooth and possible solutions. I felt able to make a fully informed decision as to my treatment. The process was completely pain-free beginning with the Novocaine injection and including the extraction itself and post-surgery healing. I was given a phone number to reach Dr. Roberts directly if I had any problems or concerns. Since post-surgery was smooth, I had no need to call but it was a comfort to have the number. I recommend both Dentists on the Square and Dr. Roberts. read more

Update: Downgraded from 2 stars to 1, and would give 0 if I could. In addition to the earlier root canal debacle, I'd had a few other fillings replaced without incident. After less than two years, one of the replacement fillings in a bottom molar actual broke when I was flossing...part of the filling chipped off, leaving the drilled area exposed for a period of time while my new dentist was closed due to COVID. I was eventually able to get him to repair it (without any additional drilling), to the tune of $289; unfortunately, I'm unable to have it reimburse by my insurance because the tooth had already been worked on only a short time ago. So now I'm out the original cost of the filling, plus the repair...in addition to having a root canal my new dentist confirmed I never needed. This has never happened to me before with any dentist, and I'm furious all over again. I don't even know who to fight with at this point, my insurance or DOTS. I'm not going to include the name of the specific dentist in this review since I still have a call out to him about the broken replacement filling, but I hope someone at this shop makes things right. I'm writing this review a second time, since it appears to have been removed after I first wrote it. My experience at DOTS was the worst dental experience I've had to date (50 year old woman who goes to the dentist religiously 2x per year). Although the work that was actually performed turned out well (i.e., quality of work / end product), I do not believe that the work should have been recommended to me by the dentist in the first place. Unfortunately, one needs to rely on the opinion of professionals, and the opinion of doctors carries even more weight than other professionals. I went in for a routine cleaning as a new patient after my regular dentist had retired and ended up, a couple of months later, with a root canal and a crown (my first for both). Although I had no pain or discomfort with the tooth, the dentist recommended that an old filling be replaced and he showed me photographs of additional decay. It was only after the old filing was removed that I experienced any issues with pain. The dentist had warned that this "could" happen and that I "might" need additional work, but that removing the existing filling was a "conservative" position to prevent against future decay of the tooth. I was not happy with the way the situation turned out but was even more upset when he recommended almost the exact same procedure for a second tooth during the root canal / crown process. At that point, I visited another dentist (the son of my childhood dentist) for a second opinion. In his opinion, the first replacement filling should never have been recommended as a "conservative" position. He would have recommended a wait and see approach and avoided the possibility for the root canal / crown until absolutely necessary. I didn't go back to DOTS for the second tooth (which also has no pain or discomfort) and will go with my new dentist's advice to take more of a wait and see approach. I recommend that anyone who is not comfortable with advice given always seek a second opinion. It was my fault to not do that immediately, but I'll never make that mistake again. Again, this is only my opinion, but I do not believe that the recommendation was conservative and in my best interest, especially given how obviously uncomfortable I was with the recommendation. The dentist did call me to discuss my first Yelp review but I did not return the call. The review was then taken down. I also now know to screenshot reviews once they first go live. read more

I went to dentists on the square twice. The good: The place is clean and people are very nice. The bad: The wait time is very long, prepare to wait 20-30 minutes after your scheduled time before you see the doctor. The doctor seemed professional but did not answer my questions or listened to my concerns. The office is mismanaged, it's very difficult to get them to send over my records, I had multiple phone calls and even came in person to sign a waiver and they still have not sent my records to me/my new doctor. read more

As a new patient I went for a cleaning and to have some bonding done on my lower incisors, a procedure I've had a few times in the past as the bonding only lasts for a while. After the bonding there is a gritty feeling on the inside surface, never had that before. I went back the next day to get it smoothed out, but the different dentist wasn't able to make it better. Had 3 different dentists, one for cleaning, one for bonding, one for the attempt to smooth the surface. After the failed attempt the dentist told me after two weeks I wouldn't notice it. Wrong! I get the impression this is where new dentists go to get experience, then leave to start their practice. read more

I would not recommend this practice. I've had to go back for multiple follow-up appointments for routine fillings to fix extreme pain caused by the fillings (read: can't chew on that side of my mouth). It was 3 appts. for one filling, and now I'm on 4 appts. for another filling. All of the appts. are during the day too causing me to miss work. I saw that another reviewer posted a similar issue which is very troubling. read more

I've been to a few dentists in Philly, but my co-worker referred me here. The staff here does great work and they are kind and courteous like health care professionals should be. They always make me feel very comfortable and make recommendations for my personal dental routine. They discuss procedures with you ahead of time so you know what to expect. They also make sure to check your insurance coverage so you don't get charged for anything you don't want or need which is very helpful. The staff also appears very happy to work there and they stay which is reassuring. The view from the chair is also a plus! Advice: Be on time for your appointment because the front desk is not very friendly when you're late (and rightfully so). read more

My dental insurance recently changed, so it was time to find a dentist in Philly instead of venturing to Brooklyn for my appointments. The place was easy to make an appointment with, the front desk staff was friendly, and the place was clean. However, my experience with Dr. Rao left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Now, I'm not a poster dental patient by any means, but I think my sins come mostly from not flossing as often as I should, which, let's be real, is true for many many people. After examining my mouth, Dr. Rao left the room for twenty minutes, and then came back and berated me, accusing me of never going to the dentist, and eating tons of candy (I go to the dentist twice a year ...ok SOMETIMES once a year, shoot me and I eat a normal human amount of candy, not a lot, not none). He then went on to tell me I had gingivitis and that to prevent it from progressing and losing all my teeth, I needed to buy a bunch of products from his practice, amounting to about $200 worth of merchandise. Aside from needing a root canal (the toothache that brought me in), he also wanted to do a bunch of procedures that included replacing current fillings with crowns and inlays. I went to the receptionist, miffed from the condescending way I was spoken to, and she then told me how much just the crown from the root canal would be. She was simultaneously trying to get me to buy a more expensive toothbrush than the one I was already purchasing out of sheer guilt and shame ($125 for the brush, $370 for the crown). I just graduated college, so I'm not exactly rolling in it. After hearing what just one crown would cost me, I thought of the root canal, and the other crowns and inlays he wanted me to do. The sheer thought of what that would cost me (no less than $2,000 I'm sure) plus the embarrassment I felt from my interaction with me made me start crying in front of this poor receptionist. I consider myself a pretty sane, normal, emotionally functional human being, so I was pretty mortified finding myself crying at the dentist, but there I was. I'm going back to finish the one crown after my root canal, but then I'm taking my business elsewhere. Another friend who went here and whose mouth is much better than mine got the same gum disease lecture and also got guilted into the toothbrush. I'm in the process of trying to find a new dentist in Philadelphia, and after several recommendations from friends and colleagues, I found one. Dr. Rao's office REFUSED to send them my records! They told me there would be a $50 charge to do so. WHAT A BUNCH OF CRIMINALS! Is this even legal?? This office is so poorly run, I cannot imagine how they stay in business. Honestly, I'm considering taking legal action against them to release my documents. NEVER GO TO THIS DENTIST OFFICE! They will screw up your teeth and then when you try to find a new dentist, they will attempt to BULLY you out of more money. read more

They have a nice office and convenient location but other than that these people are absolutely terrible. Dr. Rao is extremely arrogant and was very rough when he was dealing with me. He was terrible at giving injections and just seemed like he was trying to get me in and out as quick as possible. He was terrible in every aspect and I will never go back to this place- even if he offered to do all procedures for free. Update: Also he fraudulently tried to bill me for $200 worth of "lab fees". When I called my dental insurance company about the bill i received, they told me that the "lab fees" were supposed to be written off as part of the negotiated price between Dr. Rao and Delta Dental. When i called his office to have the fees reversed the receptionist said it wasn't possible and that she wasn't even sure how to go about reversing the fees. I called Delta Dental and told them the situation and they forced Dr. Rao to write off the charges and give me my money back. read more

I would NEVER go back to this place. While the office is extremely clean and hygienic, the service was utterly horrific. I originally went in for a cleaning, and came out of the place with swollen gums and in pain. Dr. Rao insisted on removing a crown from a past root canal to clean underneath it, and was so rough with that tooth that I ended up developing a very serious infection, which swelled into my face and neck. When I went back for an emergency appointment in very serious pain, the staff would not even let me see a dentist until I wrote them a check. Dr. Rao also denied any wrongdoing and essentially told me it was my problem, therefore it was my fault. They eventually referred me to a specialist for my problem, but now, two years later, I have to get that tooth removed after spending a fortune. In addition to all of this, I was told by Dr. Rao that I "neglect" my teeth and that the condition of my mouth was poor. Dr. Rao had literally no bedside manner. These dentists are criminals.
