Stopped here for brunch while doing some shopping & it was amazing!! Quick, friendly service with a pretty decent menu to choose from, lots of options! We came in on a Saturday around 11:30 and it wasn't too busy. I got the grilled cheese and potato wedges, both were delicious! My fiancé got avocado toast with egg and a side of bacon & he raved about the avocado toast! He also got an iced chai latte which I tried & was delicious and I ordered an iced latte which was also yummy! Their baked goods looked amazing too, but we were too full to try any. We came here twice during our stay In Amish country as we headed to MI. The first day we just got donuts, and today we had breakfast in the cafe. I had the biscuits and gravy with a scrambled egg- FANTASTIC! My wife has baked oatmeal, also FANTASTIC. And the girls had short stacks of pancakes with whipped cream. I stopped in to grab a sweet treat for the kiddos to end our day trip to Amish Country. It was after 6 and most of the town was closing up around that time on a Saturday. This place is open until a relatively night owlish 8pm. It's a strange blend of Amish meets trendy cafe, but it works. It's unlikely that it's Amish owned, but Der Bake Oven offers a lot of Amish style goods with worldly comforts of "the English" like wifi. Some employees were in Amish garb while others weren't, so it looks like they at least employ the Amish. It's a bakery, ice cream parlor, restaurant, and cafe mixed into one. They have an impressive list of coffee, espresso, and cappuccinos to pick from. I didn't dine-in, but they have an extensive food menu from paninis and soups to full Amish style dinners. I'm not much of a dessert person, but I had an amazing fresh peach milkshake. The ice cream in the shake was very thick and rich. Their were chunks of peach throughout. The wife enjoyed a salty caramel cone which was very dense, almost like a frozen custard. The kids opted for chocolate chip cookies which were pretty run of the mill. This place is very special. It looks like they only have sweets and baked goods (which are the best on the planet), but they also have a full menu and dining room which are not as obvious. You just order off of the overhead menu and sit in the very comfortable dining room while they bring your dinner to you. We always get a ton or more of cookies and space them out during the trip home. I am fighting slumping into a sugar trance but my taste buds are so grateful that they keep me awake. Husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Friday around 1 pm. Busy, but some empty tables. Seated quickly, got water, and ordered right away. Then we sat there for 30 minutes. A couple seated right after us got up and walked out - overheard them say they had not even been greeted or given water. But no acknowledgement from our server who was the same server for both tables. Then another 15 minutes go by. Restaurant is empty now. Another table gets their food. That's it. We get up and start heading toward the door. Server sees us and says "you're food is up next". Too late. Biscuits & gravy, and chicken salad on a croissant with a cup of pumpkin chili should not take close to an hour. Menu is limited. Kind of pricey. Cup of soup $7, bowl $9. Bakery items looked/smelled good. Pricey. And all items you can find elsewhere. Bottom line: skip this place, lots of others nearby to choose from. read more
