This place is cute, with lots of communal seating. It got great sunlight in the front of the restaurant allowing for a little indoor suntanning. My 1st time here. The atmosphere is lovely inside & back patio. The canele was delicious. The matcha Latte was nice. The avocado toast comes with chopped onions, but I requested them off for allergy reasons & they did it! Which is awesome. The bad news, the avocado toast was so sour that it took forever to finish & a couple of times I thought about throwing it out, but since it was expensive I soldiered on. Yuck. What is on there? Apple Cider Vinegar? A quart of lemon juice? I don't know? It was terrible. Other than that, I look forward to returning for the coffee, hopefully that's better because I like the feel of this place & customer service is top-notch. Was excited to checkout the new addition to our neighborhood. Sorry to say disappointed, upon entering went up to the slack faced counter person, asked to see a menu, she wasn't sure of it's whereabouts. The desserts on display did not appear to be all in-house prepared. Tje few that there on display. It was Sunday after 2pm. With me I like and will stop for a beverage and bite. The dim lighting, lack of goodies on display, general feeling, why bother. Slacked face sure did nothing to entice us to return. Never found menu, server/counter person- never even moved or tried to find it for us to check out. Felt unwanted not a goood sales technique. One was not posted outside. Such a cute spot. It's small and intimate. It looked like there was outdoor seating as well. We ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes(1 pancake thick and fluffy), a breakfast burrito and an almond croissant. Everything was split between two people and it was for sure enough food. I was looking for a new place to eat and decided (based on an email alert from Yelp) to try this place. Parking was a little bit of a hunt, but not impossible if you don't mind walking a couple of blocks. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I was initially put off by the lack of menus (there's only one at the counter) and by the pay-in-advance service. However, the staff there was so nice and helpful that I didn't even mind carrying my own glasses and drinks to my table. (It was pretty quiet when we were there, so waitstaff would actually have been a waste of money.) I decided to have the Cuban sandwich and my partner had the Smoked Alaskan salmon. While I was waiting I decided to try the custard pastry which was the right amount of sweet (I hate overly sweet desserts) and a perfectly-sized nibble before my meal. Can I tell you? Everything was ridiculously amazing! The Cuban sandwich had two different kinds of savory ham, house-made mayo, and the freshest pickles I've tasted in a long time on a warm, crisp ciabatta roll. It even came with a side salad - spring mix with a tasty house vinaigrette, green apples, and figs! My salad had fresh, delicious figs and there was a smear of fig spread on my sandwich! That really blew me away and made my mouth very happy. My partner's Alaskan salmon made him very happy too; I didn't sample it so I couldn't tell you what it tasted like, but the whole grain sliced bread it was nestled in made it look very inviting. I got a generous, kick-butt lunch for $12 ($15 if you include the dessert), and I didn't have to go to Williamsburg or to Manhattan. Our entire bill didn't exceed $30, which for the quality of food Der Pioneer serves, is extremely reasonable. To have a place like this in central Brooklyn is such a find, I will make sure to patronize Der Pioneer as much as I can to make sure they stay in business! My next visit will be for brunch! Food here is A+. Worth what they're charging. In fact, I wish they'd raise the prices, if anything, so it would be a lot less crowded on the weekends and I'd actually be able to eat their pancakes when I get the craving. Don't listen to the Yelpers who are docking stars because the price point is not on par for the 'hood. The ingredients are high quality and each dish is prepared with the care that goes with a real, nice, sit-down restaurant. I do have one huge COMPLAINT though. There are no refills on drip coffee when you dine in. It takes me two mugs of coffee to finish their delicious lemon ricotta pancakes and it's unconscionable that I'd have to order nearly $10 worth of drip coffee to do that! Maybe the owner will consider one refill per person. I'd dock a star for this but my Yelp m.o. is to counterbalance what I perceive as unfair reviews by other people. LOL. read more

My mom discovered this place with her friends and I'm so glad she chose this beautiful day to take me! I had the Alaskan salmon sandwich which was absolutely delicious! The service here is very fast and the servers here are so nice! If you choose to stay, they bring your order to where you're sitting. There's a garden to sit out in and even some outlets where you can sit with your laptop to do work or just to charge up your phone. The desserts also look amazing! Great - if you like raw eggs. Ordered 3 egg/avocado sandwiches for my family. I saw them preparing someone else's order and the egg appeared raw. I requested ours fully cooked, not runny. I saw the barista tell the chef to cook our eggs fully. So 10 minutes later , 3 sandwiches come out, all completely undercooked. I'm not even going to call this sunny side up as even the whites were dripping out. I told the barista and he agreed we had requested fully cooked. He goes in the back and requests re-order for us. I saw the chef roll his eyes and shake his head. New sandwich comes back out, slightly more cooked but still undercooked/raw by most standards (picture attached). We were in a rush so accepted it and just removed the egg from sandwich. When I was done, I again showed the runny egg to cashier and he simply laughed at me. Gross. read more

Maybe it just wasn't for me but the lemon ricotta pancake was very salty. I liked the density and but the texture almost like a grainy cheesecake and then the flavor just didn't do it for me. Ended up throwing away over half of it. Not really what I was expecting. If you like a lemon ricotta pancake thats closer to a pancake I'd absolutely skip this. More than just a convenient cafe for people in the neighborhood, I would go so far as to say that this place is an absolute destination. Everything is made on the premises and the pastry chefs are categorically masterful (mercy!!). The reason I can't give it 5-stars - and this is so not the fault of the owners - is that the family scene here is out of control at times. Weekends can be absolute chaos. Lots of kids running around - screaming, crying, all of that. Sure, call me a grouch. But a couple of times I saw rogue children collide with staff whose arms were full with stacked dishes. Their parents didn't seem to care or pay attention (it takes a village!). Don't let that deter you however from at least getting takeout. It's worth the sturm und drang. read more

It felt like I was in somewhere in the city for brunch, which is what I hope to avoid living in this area.
