I've been a patient for a long time. I originally was going to the Laconia location and then switched to the Somersworth location when I moved to Maine a year and a half ago. Dr. Guarino is an awesome, nice doctor who is the only reason I'm not giving one star! I've had no issues coming here until recently in Somersworth. The office staff is rude and dismissive. I've been a patient with no issues all these years, but because I had an issue getting to my appointment once (paid the $75 fee for no 24 hour notice) and then unfortunately got hit with a migraine so bad it would have affected my eye exam on the day I was to go to my rescheduled date, they wanted to charge me $75 again for no notice. I argued that it wasn't something I could get a 24 hour notice for, that it hit me hard and was making it hard to use my eyes. The response I got was as if I was this ongoing problem patient that has always caused them nothing but strife with wasting the doctor's appointment times. That "it's extremely busy here and I don't have time to argue with you. I'll look in your file and see if I can cancel the fee but I'll have to put a note in your file to have you pay up front before your next rescheduled visit because you've canceled twice with not enough notice." Seriously?! Like I said to her, I've been a patient with no problems with appointments for years and the moment I'm not perfect I get a note in my file to pay upfront?? Horrible way to treat a loyal, long term patient who never had issues with appointments beforehand. I'm already looking for a new doctor because that's BS treatment. Completely unprofessional in the way they speak and treat patients. Dr. Guarino, reviews on google are also in agreement that it's clear I'm not alone that your office staff are driving away patients which is sad considering you're such a great doctor. Office staff play a very important role for doctor visits, they are the ones who deal with patients the most, they reflect on a bussiness. You can be the best doctor ever but it doesn't make up for being treated like dirt by your staff. My loyalty only stands when respect and consideration are involved by all people who are supposed to be caring for me when you aren't around and your office doesn't care. Good luck! read more

My experience was identical to the other 1 star review. Dr. Guarino is fantastic. Clearly cares about his patients, explains everything fully and is very thorough. Office manager Jennifer is rude and condescending, talks down to you like a child and talks over you on the phone. For the sole reason of having to deal with her my family will not return. It's unfortunate for Dr. Guarino that she is chasing patients away from his otherwise excellent practice. The other office person (Carrie) was a pleasure to deal with but I will not give my business to anyone that treats me or my family this way. If Jennifer leaves the practice I will update my review to 5 stars and my family will be loyal customers/patients again. read more

I showed up to my appt. 3 minutes late, and they refused to see me. They said I had to refill out paperwork that might that me 5 or 10 minutes and the doctor was too busy to see me. I was NEVER told to show up early or asked to complete new forms. I have been there several times and my coverage hasn't changed. Why I couldn't complete the paper work after the doctor saw me is beyond me. Perhaps they don't care, perhaps they aren't flexible enough for they're patients, perhaps they aren't smart enough to think of these options. read more

I was in of a new eye Dr. I called around and so many just could not accommodate me including the practice I had been seeing for well over 20 years. The Somersworth office was able to squeeze me and my son in a timely manner, and the Dr. was just amazing. I was truly impressed with the Dr.'s knowledge and his calm and non-rushed demeanor. Dr Guarino is an excellent eye doctor. I have been going to him for well over a decade - I never wanted to stop but his administrative assistant/secretary was so rude over the phone I was left with no choice. All I called for was an eye exam so I could order more contacts, instead I got all sorts of attitude about why I hadn't visited in 4 years, or why I had previously bulk ordered enough contacts to last me 4 years. The assistant said she "didn't appreciate me not coming every year and flouting the 'rules' about getting an exam annually." I mean, really? This is how you treat your patients? I've always had eye exams once every few years and then go to 1800Contacts to order a bulk supply. Everyone I know does this. I've done this since I was a kid, without issue. During the course of our conversation, I mentioned I didn't appreciate the hostile attitude, and she told me "I was free to go to another eye doctor." So, I hung up on her and am now seeking a new eye doctor. Embarrassingly bad customer service. Unless you can get through to Dr. Guarino directly, I'd highly recommend you look elsewhere. read more

I have been a Patient of Dr. Derek Guarino since (2009). Dr. Gaurino has a kind & compassionate manner when dealing with patients. After I contracted Lyme Disease, he very carefully examined my eyes for LD impacts. No LD impacts have been found, so far. His compassioante manner & deep interest in his patients, is MUCH better than most Drs. serving the community today in (2023). I miss the Dr. patient relationship of old. Nowadays, it's (5) minutes in the Drs. office & "here take ALL OF THESE PILLS!! HERE'S YOUR PRESCRIPTION, THAT WILL BE (5) MILLION DOLLARS!" However, Dr. Derek Guarino, actually sits with his patients, talks to them. He even asks " Dear Patient?? How are things for you? How have your eyes been lately? Are you feeling, alright? Do YOU have any EYE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH ME? Do you smoke anything? How is YOUR overall HEALTH? If we could CLONE - Dr. Derek Guarino, we could send him back to US MEDICAL SCHOOLS as a FULL PROFESSOR... for him to teach the following in Modern Patient Care: Courtesy, time Management - Dr. Guarino has always been on time for me, as his Patient! He could also teach them in Medical Schools: Efficiency & PATIENT COMPASSION. I believe that Dr. Derek Guarino, could single-handedly, re-invent today's Medical Profession & teach the old-fashioned compassionate care that Drs. used to portray. Even Dr. Guarino's Receptionist, Jennifer cares only for the Patient. Jennifer is open, honest & efficient when it comes to choosing eye glasses. She will address eye glass concerns & explain which eye glass style is best for the face shape & structure. The eye glass selections @ EYE LOGIC are stellar. Some pricey & many pairs not so pricey. Dr. Derek is the best. Exceptional service. Both he and his staff. Over the years I have had several different specialists I always felt "ballparked" my prescription. These guys are précoce, spot on, and fast. I so recommend this Dr. and his staff. The office is a bit out of the way. But then, so am I. Nice office. Has a ramp too. Everything is by appointment. If you are unsure about your prescription or think you have a special disease, they have the latest machines, tests, and know what they are talking about. Don't hesitate. read more

I went to this location for an eye exam and was a bit surprised on the service I had received. This place was definitely a good experience. I had called ahead of time to get a appointment and to make sure I had coverage through my insurance. they had made and appointment for me. It is a a smaller location and only two staff members at the time. There selection of eye glasses decent. Keep in mind this was not a huge shop. I had been taken care of at this location. staff had been polite and informative. This was a Great experience for me. positive experiences are not always easy to come by. read more

I had to change my optometrist a few years ago due to a change in insurance. I very much liked my old optometrist but I needn't have worried because Doctor Guarino is excellent. He is patient, listens to you, and offers options based on your conversation, not because they are the most expensive. I see some reviews about the reception team as negative, though I have never had a problem with anyone there. Everyone has always been friendly and respectful to me. read more

Dr. Guarino himself is absolutely wonderful. He is patient, thorough and friendly. He answers all of your questions and does not rush you at all. His wife Jennifer- the receptionist, on the other hand, is the most unprofessional woman I have ever encountered. She is incredibly rude and doesn't try to help in the least. She talks over you on the phone and speaks to you like you are child. If you try to bypass her and speak to Dr. Guarino himself, she will not allow it. She is pushy and a bully and for those reasons alone I give this Eye Office one star. There are many other Eye Offices in the area- nobody should ever be treated the way she treats paying clients. read more

i haven't had my eyes examined since high school, and i should have my head examined for waiting this long to meet the staff at Dr. Guarino's! During my eye exam, he explained everything he was looking for and long term concerns about my vision. It was reassuring and informative. When it came time to pick out glasses,there were thousands to choose from, but the consultant I worked with narrowed down a selection so it wasn't overwhelming. She was very patient as I tried on each pair and provided honest and open feedback, which was again, a huge help in selecting my pair. I love my Modo frames! I highly recommend this office, it was easy to find off of 108 and tons of parking available. read more

Unbelievable! I broke my glasses and rely on them for everyday tasks. I called right away, hoping to be seen and get a new pair of eyewear. Cathy, however, had no sympathy nor concern for my situation. She only wanted my insurance information and then offered me an appointment in 10 days!! Seriously? I should mention that I have been a patient for nearly 10 years. I understand that the office can get busy and I'm not the only patient but how about a little loyalty and understanding?
