The entertainment is always awesome. This is our third visit here. we watched wicked-er & my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much. I noticed there's not a lot of good pictures of food on yelp (probably because they turn the house lights down low for the production) so I'm uploading our photos of our pizza we had. The not good news: it took awhile to get our utensils and some salt. My daughter's pizza came out after intermission. Fries were cold. Brownies were not eaten because it wasn't good. Mint chip freezery. We paid over $100 and were hungry when we left due to inadequate flavor. Good news: our waiter was friendly and tried to do what he could . We enjoyed the show. The show was amusing and well acted. Modern day references that you find throughout though set the year after Scrooge's transformation. I may attend in the future. I will eat before going. read more

Had a really fun date night with my husband and parents at DS playhouse! Entertainment is light hearted and will make you laugh! Warning on the food though. Do not get the burgers! I literally couldn't eat mine! The bun was cold (straight out of the fridge) and the beef had an overwhelming taste of freezer burn! The fries had no salt and were at best ok. Great service and a fun show. There are not many entree options beyond salad, burgers, and pizza but the food was good. The chicken caesar salad was really good but the loaded fries were dissapointing. I paid extra to add ground beef but it tasted and looked more like falafel. The show was cute and fun. The whole cast puts their whole heart into the show and have a lot of fun. The songs they parody were the highlight for me although if you are hard of hearing you might miss some of the lyrics. The facility is nice and clean and every single member of staff that interacted with us was friendly and helpful. Be warned that the humor in the show is family friendly and that means it can be a bit cheesey but going in to just have a good time and hear some gentle comedy of a show or movie you like always makes it fun. read more

Food was mediocre. the burger meat was way smaller than the bun. Seating is very cramped. Service was ok although when the bar tender picked up our sign check he scowled at us because we did not add additional tip to the 18% that was automatically added. Show was like Mormon church roadshow. There were a few funny lines. Overall just not enough to entice us to return. read more

I was in Salt Lake visiting some family and heard about this place. We went online and got what appeared to be the last tickets for the time we wanted. Was a little weary as they were off to the side but, when we got there, saw that there really are no bad seats. The show was hilarious and really enjoyable - worth every penny. The cast was phenomenal and I even learned that the director/writer was someone that I used to go see at the Gaslight Theatre in Tucson, AZ years ago. GREAT PERFORMANCE!! We were one of the first groups seated (and order taken), yet we didn't receive our pizza until the first intermission. Not sure what happened?? The pizza was good (not great), but the show made up for it. Refill on drinks were not very forthcoming. The worst part (and the reason for the star deduction) was the billing. They bring out the checks in the dark and expect you to complete them. Our server was friendly, so I gave him a 20% tip. Little did I know, he had already automatically added a tip to the bill. Now, I'm used to added tips for large parties, but a party of 3?? And he didn't say a word. So, he ended up with a 40% tip. This is incredible deceptive and dishonest. So, definitely go for the show. It was great. The food was average to good. We didn't partake in one of the sundaes, but they were HUGE and looked really good. But take a good look at your check before you sign. read more

The shows rock and my family love them. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is due to the fact that every time I've gone the food it wasn't worth it, my wife also feels the same about their chicken sandwich. The nachos to me were so salty that they were barley edible. The pizza just had an off-putting taste, and last time I got a burger and well I could only eat half of it as the flavor had my stomach turning. The shows are totally worth it but eat before you go and maybe get drink or two there would be my advice. That is until they figure out their food profiles. read more

My wife and I received a gift certificate to Desert Star Theater for Christmas and redeemed it this past weekend to see the Adams Family Reunion. The online reservation/certificate redemption was not an easy process. The website does not let you choose your seats, but offers best available. You can see what seats are vacant, but have to keep pushing the button to rotate through all available seats until you land on the ones you want. Then, redeeming the certificate itself was difficult. I eventually made it work, but it was definitely not user-friendly. We arrived about 40 minutes before the 8:30 showing and found ample, but poorly lit, parking in the back. A few minutes after arriving, the earlier show let out and the place filled up quickly with guest from the first show as well as those waiting for the second show. It was chaos for a good 10 minutes. The doors opened to the theater at about 8:25, and people started shuffling in. We were led to our table and surprised at how close we were to the tables on either side of us. Having just come from dinner, we weren't hungry, but did want to order a drink and dessert. Our server told us that he could get us dessert, but someone else would come by to take our drink order-we just needed to stand the menu up to alert them that we wanted alcohol. There was a buzz of servers running around, going in and out the doors and delivering food to tables throughout the theater. We never did see anyone come by to take a drink order. It could be that there is one solitary person that takes orders for the bar and they never could make it all around the room. The show itself was....well, that depends on who you ask. I was mildly entertained-sort of in the way you're mildly entertained watching your six grade kid's Christmas performance (but without the pride of "hey, that's MY kid!")....my wife, on the other hand was downright blissful. She loves cheesy puns and Utah culture humor, so she loved it. She would be their target audience, for sure! The show felt long for both of us, so we quickly skedaddled after the curtain call-missing the "olio"...whatever that is. I'm sure we will be back to find out-my wife had so much fun she plans on dragging me to more shows in the future. Maybe this time I'll get lucky and be able to order a drink. read more

My husband and I came in from out of town and decided to see a show. We saw that there were last minute tickets and were so glad we did. We have never been to a show like this. It was wonderful. It was funny. They kept us laughing. All the staff we encountered were so nice and friendly. The stage beautifully decorated. The restaurant had a cozy cabin feel. We just at desert and it was great. I ordered ice cream and it was a big portion. My husband had the molten brownie, delicious. Such a great experience! read more

The show I saw was really funny and enjoyable and the live Piano was great! I loved how they made Utah references during the acts! Staff is nice so no problem there. The only two things I would fix or change is the seating you are literally crammed in the place like sardines and have to share tables and the tables are so small that if everyone gets food you can't fit it all on the table. Speaking of the food I got the Caesar Salad and the chicken looked felt and tasted like plastic and I'm pretty sure Caesar doesn't have black beans or tortilla chips on it and I'm not sure what the very light on the dressing was! I would come see a show again but try to get just a two person table and eat dinner somewhere else before I attend. read more

So I am giving two stars cause I don't want to be too mean. But the experience from a few weeks ago was half-baked. The show itself wasn't that funny, like comedy was pretty cringe. I think it needed more unhinged and less random references humor. And the cowboy Christmas olio didn't have many cowboy elements other than the characters dressed as the wild west. Meanwhile the seating was also cramped. I'd believe you if you told me Spirit Airlines had more elbow room. Popcorn was pretty good though. read more

The play was very fun, but I was served a raw hamburger. Since the lights were dim, I ate more than half of the burger without realizing since there were enough other condiments that I didn't notice until the lights were turned up. It looked as if it had barely been warmed on each side. I showed the waiter, who in turn took it to the manager and the cook. More than anything, I wanted them to know what they were serving and that people could get very sick from raw hamburger. They came back and said--we'll give you a 20% discount. I wasn't really informing them for a refund, but after I thought about it, they really should have, at the very least, not charged for that meal. And if someone were to get e coli, that measly 20% certainly would not have paid for a hospital bill. I'll never again order anything that needs to be cooked through from Desert Star Playhouse. It left a raw taste in my mouth. Stick with fries. read more

My family is season ticket holders, so it's not our first rodeo here. However, last night, we saw Wednezday - an Addams Family Parody! This was one of the best shows we've seen over the past many years!!! The actors/singers were wonderful, their voices were fantastic, their comedic timing was spot on, and, before we knew it, we were singing "Happy Trails to You". We went to Desert Star years ago for a work party and enjoyed it. We went again this evening to "Indiana Bones", but I don't think I'll be returning. We had 4 tickets and we're crowded around a table that was about 18" X 24" (yes, 4 chairs around that tiny table, but only on 3 sides). The show quality is ok, very punny, but he set design was pretty good. I have to hand it to the live pianist who makes things flow and can pick up on ad-lib bits and play appropriate music for them. At intermission we ordered some ice cream and a float. But they never arrived. I saw the waitresses hurrying around bringing out others ice cream and clearing dishes, but ours never showed. Then the check arrived. Obviously, we didn't pay for food we never got, but I was disappointed at being crammed into a theater and never served. Our server was friendly, and explained she had made the items ordered but the hostess never brought them. I wish I would have liked my experience more, but I guess you can't win 'em all. read more

We always love coming here. It is such a fun alternative to hitting dinner and a movie. The shows are funny and unique. The food is pretty good too. We always get the loaded nachos and cheese garlic bread. The brownie sundae is delightful as well. But this time it took a little longer to get our food so we didn't have time to get a dessert as well. After the shows they always end with an "oleo" which is another 20 minutes of just them singing various songs. Each oleo is themed. This one was an 80's theme. Pretty fun! read more

We like to come to this theater for fun. We enjoy the food, greasy and the ice cream is so very tasty, I just love the brownie and ice cream scoop, so big! We had season tickets a couple years back and that was so much fun, we enjoy the ambiance of it all and the shows are usually always good and funny. This last time we saw Beauty and the Fanstatic Beast, and it was OK, for sure not their finest, but we still enjoyed ourselves. We also learned they now serve alcohol which is fantastic!! I like being able to eat a bit and have a bev. They even had some themed ones related to the show which is pretty cool. They don't have cheese fries on the menu which is a bit odd with the other items they have, it would really fit, and you can't actually order cheese to be added to the fries which is a bit of a bummer because who doesn't like cheese fries! read more

Desert Star is an amazing hidden treasure even if it is on State Street! I just enjoyed two and half hours of fun, comedic and excellent acting in "My West Valley Fair Lady". Great show!! Let's be clear, we don't go to the Desert Star for the food..If I were reviewing this place on the entertainment alone, it would get 5 stars! (10 on my scale) 8 thumbs up! (2 each for everyone at our regular table for the last 6 years) and the most enthusiastic recommendation I could offer...but the food is sadly not stellar, so I have to remove a star and for this review I will focus on my experience last evening.. the "pumpkin pastie" So I have spent time in England and enjoyed on several occasions actual Cornish Pasties That were lovingly hand made with traditional flakey really rolled out pastry dough. I have also had a Scottish version with a heavier dough but still very delicious and above all flakey. What I am saying here is by comparison, if you have expectations that are that high for this treat as I did by reading the description, just drop them to the floor, drop the mic and walk away, for this "pumpkin pastie" IS NOT THAT! To put it as concisely and as simply as I can, it was simply TOO many layers of phyllo dough that were filled with canned pumpkin, folded over and baked. Served cold not warm, with some canned tasting glazing on it with a scoop of ice cream in the middle of two on the plate. It had some Carmel sauce that I asked to be put on the side. I honestly hoped above all hope that I could find some combination of these ingredients that would find some satisfaction in my mouth... but alas...after 20+ small bites of most every conceivable combination of these ingredients, what I was left with was hysterical disappointment when I realized what this was not...anything good at all. The story we came up with to explain this tragedy was that "crap, nobody has ordered this before, what do we do now? Quick run to the store and grab some phyllo dough and a can of pumpkin filling and we'll throw something together. If we top it with Carmel and ice-cream, maybe they won't notice" The dough was undercooked in the middle, over cooked on the edges and such a sad disappointment. But in the end we will continue to go for the shows because they are such a riot, and I will Learn not not get anything that is a seasonal special and stick with a simple ice-cream cone which is actually very good! read more

I've enjoyed shows here for a really long time. Since high school and perhaps before. They've always been fun. I've love to see the addition of the cabaret theater and had a wonderful Christmas variety show there several years ago. I believe that they've got a lot going for them, but I can't help but notice that I'm not enjoying the shows nearly as much as I used to. Why is that? I think they've fallen into the formula rut. They've always been formulaic, but the shows are just written so flat, one-note, and predictable that I can't get into them. Yes, it's always been campy. That's part of the charm. But It's gotten to be where you can just say "Insert Utah politics joke here" and get the standard guffaw. You've got a great space. The food.. is just theater food. I'm not in love, but it's fine. But you need to keep the show quality up or it's going to get tough to get excited to come back. read more

Went here with a large group from work. Strange seating since it is considered a dinner theater. The smallest round tables to squeeze 5 people to eat on. When the tables are intended for 1-2 people. Crowded seating. As far as the food goes. I didn't even bother to try it. My friends have the chicken tenders and their wasn't much chicken to it. The wrap was to wet of a tortilla. And the pizza was just okay. Glad I didn't bother. Service was alright. Half of our party got their food 30 minutes after the rest, wow! The show was pretty funny at times. Saw Ghostblasters. A couple of the guys had really great voices. But it's your typical Utah jokes thrown in about BYU and the U. I'm not from here and while it is funny can't you think of something else to tease about. They ended with a monster singing thing. I enjoyed the night but when they added this part it really dropped my opinion of it. I was just long and drawn out and almost pointless to me. Glad I experienced it once. But not planning a trip back anytime soon.... read more

There is no place in Utah where you can find this type of super fun entertainment and delicious food all wrapped up under one roof. Fast and friendly service. The tables were so small that we had to juggle our food. Main entrees were fine but dessert was just meh. Some laughs during the show - we enjoyed the olio more. A family in front of us brought four tables of tweens for a birthday and they looked like they were having a blast.
