Fast and friendly service. The tables were so small that we had to juggle our food. Main entrees were fine but dessert was just meh. Some laughs during the show - we enjoyed the olio more. A family in front of us brought four tables of tweens for a birthday and they looked like they were having a blast. The plays are hilarious and they love to have audience interaction and keep them interested. The actors work hard to bring these shows on stage every night and they do a great job. Yes the plays are on the cheesy side, but it's still good. I've never really had the food before, but tonight I had a cookie from a family members dessert and oh no. The cookie was not good at all. What a great find for live performance show. Top notch performances for $25. We watched the SPAMILTON show, very funny. They played most of the music from the regular Broadway show but shorted and changed lyrics. They also added a lot of local state politics humor which I did not understand but that's OK. Language and contents were all family friendly. Free popcorn, mixed drinks were fun and had cute names. Pizza was surprising good. Servers were all young and energetic. Seating with tables and food were tight, just like the set up at Yoshi's jazz venue in Jack London Square in CA. read more

We have been coming here for years and love this place!!! The entertainment is so fun and the bbq ranch bacon pizza is literally quite amazing!!! However I can't give it 5 stars because this last Saturday we went to their 8:30 show, sat at table 117, and our waitress was honestly the worst!! I know they have younger kids and they have always been great, but she was awful. First when we got there, someone walked us to our table and only had 1 chair for 2 of us. Our waitress was like "oh yea it said the table was not sold" but it obviously was when we bought them. Anyway she was annoyed that she had another table to help and annoyed she had to find us a chair. Our order took long but it ended up being fine. But then we ordered dessert, the ice cream brownie cup. The show was almost over and we didn't have our dessert. We asked her if she forgot and she said they ran out of cups so her manager when to go find some..anyway just super annoying that nothing was communicated. Then we asked her to split the bill evenly and she said "I guess I can do that" but like with an attitude. The bill was $53 total. She comes back with one check ran for $21, and one bill for $32. We were like wait what? When we confronted her she said "oh I thought that's what you wanted"? By that time we were done!! I'm glad this place is around. Every city of any size needs a topical revue place such as this and they do a lot of good things here, such as actually paying their talent. Inside is kind of weird, almost like a Western street theme, yet inside the building...I dunno. Kinda goofy. This is a sort of dinner theater and they also call it a banquet center, but I'm very moderately convinced there. The tables are far too tiny for me to consider this any sort of proper dinner theater, which makes the entire thing somewhat uncomfortable, if you're doing the large male (or female) thing and all. I don't particularly care for everyone on top of everyone else, so I'm not sure how excited I am to hurry back, for at least that element. On the food front, ok, look, those puny, dinky little tables create all sort of havoc if you're ordering anything of any size. Fortunately, the food is not approaching spectacular or anything, so you can certainly feel free to eat prior to getting there and just worry about the staff getting your drinks wrong, assuming they get them to the table at all. I think they're generally genial and well-meaning but most of the wait staff is actively bad at what they do, which suggests a management issue. It is kind of neat to see them sharing in the gussying-up, with a continuity in uniform, again a throwback or at least a nod to bygone old-Western times, but efficient and accurate service goes a long way. As to the shows themselves, I think your enjoyment to this sort of things is directly commensurate with your mindset going in. This is meant more for comedy, so if you go in expecting really high end theater, despite some of the actors gamely making stabs at it here and there, you will mostly stay wanting. I liken it to stand-up comedy shows; the more receptive you are to enjoying it, the more you will enjoy it. I've typically found the shows I've seen to be more amusing than outright funny (not commenting on any individual shows specifically) and with ticket prices being what they are, this sometimes gives me pause, but pro tip here, try to go after the show has run for 2 - 4 weeks, as it will give them time to gel and you will get a more cohesive show. Most of this seems ad-lib and it can take a while to smooth out the kinks in the various runs. All in all, I call it a pretty enjoyable experience, despite the not-very-good wait staff, the substandard food and the pathetically little tables and jammed-together nature of things and I cannot, in good conscience, give them a higher rating, no matter how much I love theater and am glad this place is around and supporting working actors, when those things are in place, all of which are generally indefensible in light of the show ticket prices. This was actually a very pleasant suprise. We decided to switch things up this year and we took my mom out to a play for her birthday. I wasn't sure what to expect but I actually had a really good time and thought the actors did a great job in "wicked-er" that said my whole party didn't exactly feel the same way as me. Haha however I usually try to have fun wherever I'm at and they may have came in with a bit of a mood about the whole thing. If I can get someone to go with me I wouldn't mind seeing what else they have to offer. TLDR: Don't be a grump expecting Broadway, and you'll enjoy yourself. read more

I really wish I could give 0 stars. This place was a total disaster, from beginning to end. I was so excited to go for the first time but I will never be going back and I will be encouraging everyone I know to avoid this place. First off it is crowded as hell and uncomfortable. You're shoulder to shoulder with people and sharing a small table with them. The show, Spamilton, was awful!! We couldn't understand a word the actors were saying or "rapping". Our waitress was rude from beginning to end. But then I noticed a Confederate flag hanging in the corner above the piano, so seeing as I was there with my BLACK husband, it all made sense why we were being treated so badly and why this place is so awful. **And for a quick history lesson, The Confederate flag has absolutely nothing to do with Utah, has no Utah history, and there's absolutely no reason it should be displayed** read more

You have to pick a different day or play to go see, and if your relatives were in town for that ONE night to see the show, you're out all your money because you don't need that many tickets ever again. While expensive, this comedic dinner theater is a fun, unique experience. The food is fine and the service is usually great, even though I feel like my show is interrupted whenever my waitress comes by to check on us. I would recommend pizzas, nachos, and fries. Can't go wrong with those! If you are picky with sauces like I am, you'll be taking a chance with the wraps.. The southwestern chicken was good, although the sauce seemed funky to me, too creamy and sour. My mom ordered one of their margaritas and enjoyed it, and of course she had to spike it herself since it is Utah. They actually had a separate waitress for drinks, most likely because the other waiters are under 21. If the prices or quality of the food deters you, you don't HAVE to eat here! Come for the show at least. The show itself was enjoyable. My favorite part is the Shame Company commercials, which are priceless! The range (timeline-wise) of comedic allusions that are given throughout the show is also impressive, going back to reference a female action duo made famous thirty-forty-no idea years ago to Trump's small hands. I also really appreciate the digs at BYU and political figures. I love going to Desert Star Playhouse/Theater. I have gone here multiple times with my wife. We love the clean humor and the very unique plays they put on. The food and service is great. You do have to wait to be seated and for everyone else to be seated. However this gives ample time to talk and spend time together. read more

I recently visited the Desert Star to see Spamilton, based on positive word of mouth from friends (and my fiancée) who had seen past shows. Since there are very few reviews on the actual show, I thought I would share my experience in the hopes that prospective patrons find it helpful. Before I address the content of Spamilton, I would like to give credit to the facilities. We found the box office and wait staff respectful, cheerful, and professional. I liked the cleanliness and theming of the facilities. We ordered a large BBQ chicken pizza for my fiancée and I to eat during the show; we both agreed that it was promptly served and reasonably delicious. We also appreciated the complimentary popcorn and frequent water refills. That being said, I wish we had a good experience with Spamilton. I personally love parodies both local and national: Weird Al music, Divine Comedy, Studio C, Comedy Sportz, SNL, Mad Magazine, etc. I was expecting a fun blend of Monty Python silliness and local, current references in the musical style of Hamilton. Instead, I felt like I got a show specifically meant to land cheap shots on Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, etc. (which I find odd, since the county has a sizeable portion of blue voters...) I won't spoil any more than I have to, but I must report one of the annoying omissions - the framing of the villain. At the beginning, the piano musician gives a spiel on how the audience should react to the hero and villain (cheers and boos, respectively). SPOILER ALERT: The villain is HILLARY CLINTON. Her photo is projected for all to see and boo. In the musical, her diabolical plot is to become the mayor of Nephi... so she could be the mayor of Nephi. She later takes the name Alexandra Christiansen to not arouse suspicion. The whole play is her acting awkwardly and trying to push a progressive agenda in a small town. There is also a vaguely racist and poorly executed Colin Kaepernick joke. Needless to say, my fiancée and I did not find the show enjoyable. The cast attempted to stay true to the Hamilton's musical style and were decently talented; however, since Hamilton has a lot of quick rapping, if the entire cast doesn't project in unified, diction, you aren't able to catch the jokes they are trying to sing to you (maybe a little section for the lyrics in the complimentary menu/playbill would have been nice). More importantly, we didn't find the jokes funny. We chuckled at some toilet humor and some other quips, but we didn't find the awkward antics of Alexandra Christiansen amusing. That is not to say we don't appreciate good political satire - we've seen some good ribbing and impressions of the former Secretary of State. The main issue was we weren't expecting a continuous, direct lampooning of the former First Lady with the humor being pointed mostly at her and the political positions of her constituents. There also wasn't a balance or a mutual back-and-forth teasing (I counted one lukewarm Trump joke) - it felt more like a reactionary musical from the mind of Jon McNaughton. My fiancée and I ended up paying for the food and leaving during intermission. We felt like we had wasted our money and time; my fiancée was especially distraught because she grew up visiting the Desert Star often with her family. She had positive, fun experiences in the past and was upset how political the show had become. In retrospect, I should have figured that an institution as old as the Desert Star would cater more to the older, conservative base typically found in Utah - it would only be natural that such an audience would delight in a political musical deprecating Hillary Clinton. There is nothing wrong with this; I just wouldn't have paid $80 on a dinner musical if I knew that was going to be the topic. Part of the joy of entertainment is being able to escape life and enjoy a little fantasy. In that aspect, I feel that Spamilton was inadvertently deceptive. I was expecting light-hearted, musical silliness with the occasional peppering of political jabs; instead I got a continuation of my Facebook feed set to music. In essence, I feel a great parody would earn the respect of its progenitor and fanbase. In this case, I don't feel like Lin Manuel Miranda and the majority of Hamilton fans would find Spamilton comical. In conclusion, if you don't like Hillary Clinton, you should see this show - I think you would enjoy it. If not, I would avoid this current parody. I am not sure if we'll ever visit again, but I hope that our perspective helps potential buyers know what type of entertainment they are purchasing. read more

We were going to go here for my mother in laws birthday, her husband called for 6 seats. The ticket counter said we said 5. We absolutely did not. Not only could they not take accountability for THEIR mistake, they wouldn't refund. Instead their "resolution" was that we can come on any day that they aren't sold out. We bought tickets for the Hungry Games, and we both thought it was really funny. I enjoyed the Utah jokes that were interspersed throughout the play. Overall, we left chuckling, and we will be back. :) A note on the seating - the seating arrangements are cramped. We sat a really small four-seat table which we had to share with another couple. If you're going for a date night, try to reserve a two-seat table. You'll be a little less cramped, and you'll actually get to sit next to your date. read more

The actors interact with the crowd sometimes and really do a good job. -1 star because they smash everyone in way too tight and too small of tables and -1 star for the STUPID constant and repeating Utah type jokes....aside from those two things this place is great. read more

We just saw Kicking the Hobbit this past Saturday at 8:30pm and it was our first time at Desert Star Theater. We both had a good experience. We didn't try any of the food because we had just come from dinner but I did notice the prices - quite extreme for what is being offered - so while we are likely to return for another show, we will make sure we eat before we go. There were quite a few positives about our experience. First, it was a welcome different way to spend a date night. Second, the quality of the acting, singing, dancing, campy fun was really good. The ad lib parts were hysterical - especially when the tree almost fell over. I am still laughing about "I don't remember my lines". There was also a notable negative. The tables and chairs are PACKED in such a way that you are really uncomfortably crammed against strangers at the same and/or next table. If you are a couple, you will likely be placed at a table built for 2 but 4 people will be crammed around it. If you are as unfortunate as we were and your table mates decide to order food, you will have to sit and smell their food and listen to their cud chomping while you are trying to enjoy the show. Overall, we enjoyed our night. When we do return, we know to eat before we come and to request a table that only has two chairs and if none are available, we will choose a different night. read more

Minus one star for food. Just greasy junk food to eat. But I guess that's what you eat when you go out for entertainment. I've been a fan Desert Star Theater for over a decade. Their shows are well-cast, humorous, and they mix up their season line-up every year. I recently saw Back From The Future. It's a spoof of Back to the Future which takes place in 2001, returning to BYU in 1985. If you're not Mormon, or not from Utah, you might not get some of the humor. The only thing I dislike is the dinner theater set-up. Nothing on their menu appeals to me, and I'd prefer to have normal theater seats instead of flimsy chairs at a small dining table. With the seating set-up, my husband had to sit behind me, instead of next to me. Despite the seating arrangement, the entertainment is fresh and funny, and one of these years I'll get season tickets. read more

Attended for a performance of "My Big Fat Utah Christmas." Family has been to the playhouse before and said that they typically like the performances and find them amusing, but overall it can be hit and miss. I'm all for supporting local business, (especially theater) thus thought attending would be worth the $70+ we spent taking our kids. It was about 90 degrees in the theater and people were packed in so tight there was no room to budge. If you think cheap movie theater seats are cramped sometimes, they have far more space than this place. I have 2 younger kids that I bought drinks for and they had no smaller plastic cups with lids. No cups with lids. I played "keep away the drink" a majority of the time just so I didn't have to deal with a spill in the dark. The play was so cliche and covered just about every expected Utah stereotype, and did a few things that were borderline offensive. I'm all for laughing along at the unique culture we have here, but this was every bad Utah joke you've ever heard smashed into a 2 hour performance. The story line was everywhere and seemed to be written just to be sure to cover the jokes, rather than the other way around. We didn't order food and I'm thankful after reading the reviews. Wickeder is the first and last show I'll ever see here. The Good: The actor playing Sheldon Cooper did a great job and the rest of the cast were pretty decent too. The Bad: The food wasn't good, small portions, poor quality and overpriced. The seating is really cramped and almost unbearable if you're a person of larger size or have disabilities. A sold out show is packed in like sardines and it got really hot in there. Half the wait staff seemed really nice, the other half were downright rude asking one of our friends repeatedly if she was 'going to order anything yet?' A few of the actors kept breaking character and doing the wrong accents, it was funny a few times, then awkward the rest. The Ugly: This was the final 'nail in the coffin' so to speak, the play was great right up until they decided to bring out someone dressed up as President Obama to make tasteless digs about him 'wanting a brain' while half the audience booed in protest. It was really awkward and didn't end there, later they took yet another random pointless dig at Obama despite the first one being so ill received. People don't want to pay money have someone's (the owners maybe?) political opinions shoved down their throat. We literally would have walked out had we not been there with friends. read more

Love this place! I've been to their funny performances for decades. They also have dinner concerts and other events. My kids liked to order food (pizza, ice cream, drinks) and throw popcorn at the villains. The olio at the end is good for us old folks who like to sing along. Lots of parking behind the building. The first time I attended a performance here, I was in high school--too many years ago now for me to want to think about. The shows here are spoofs on popular songs and movies, throwing in national political commentary and Utah jokes, too. Hopefully you like singing, because audience participation is part of the game; oil those rusty pipes and familiarize yourself with the lyrics for songs such as "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," "Happy Trails," "Sweet Caroline," etc. There is full waitstaff during the performance. Come hungry and feast on pizza, garlic cheese bread, mozzarella sticks, and burgers (just to name a few of their staples), and ice cream treats for dessert. Desert Star Playhouse serves Coke products, if you're one of those that has a preference between Coke and Pepsi. Complimentary popcorn is provided at each table. Table spaces are small, so be prepared to get creative with your seating and food arrangement. Plan on packing light, too. Do you really need that gigantic purse just to go to a show (I tell myself this every performance; you should too.)? There's also a small gift shop in the theater, as well as a banquet hall that can be rented out for your special occasions. Not sure of the pricing, but from what I've seen of the inside, it's pretty safe to assume they would do a great job for your special occasion. I'm not really one that likes the spotlight focused on me, but I love witnessing couples on first dates having to dance in front of everyone and kiss, proposals being made, birthdays being celebrated, etc. If it's still June 2016 and "Perfect Pitch" is playing when you read this, make sure you get tickets for it! I'm such a boy band lover, and this show mocks them endlessly. I loved Nick Whitaker's portrayal of Chad; reminded me a lot of Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys. This can be a really great place, but its hit or miss. Ive had season tickets for 2 years, my wife and I go for our "date night". Some of the actors/musicians are amazing and very talented! I think a lot of the jokes are funny too (if your into Utah humor) although it seemed like one of the biggest problems to me, is that the crowd doesn't always seem to connect with the actors. With this style of live comedy theater if the crowd is stiff then the actors don't get as involved in their roles. My belief for this problem is that the SOUND SYSTEM and or SOUND ENGINEER(S) are TERRIBLE !!!! We often sit in the front half of the theater and still I can barely hear what the actors are saying.. HOW CAN YOU LAUGH AT A JOKE WHEN YOU CAN BARELY HEAR IT!?!?! Yeah the seating is tight, the table arrangement is strange, the food is average, but the tickets aren't very expensive either, so I think that's a wash. I absolutely love Desert Star! I've been a season ticket holder for about two years and I probably will be for a long time. The only problem I have with it is that the tables are packed in like sardines, but you have to appreciate how well they work with it. The food is great, but a little over-priced. Nothing worse than a normal restaurant though. Everyone is always very nice, the staff is amazing and so helpful. The shows are usually extremely funny, of course that depends on the shows subject and your sense of humor though. They always have a little bit of something for everyone though, even if the show isn't completely geared towards something you'd typically enjoy. read more

This place is quite the hidden gem in utah. They do shows year round and all of them are really well thought out and enjoyable to see. We recently went to scrooges nightmare before Christmas. It was up to par with the other shows we've seen there. It's always full of humor, mostly stupid humor from around Utah based on current events. They do a good job of involving the audience. It's fun to sit at the little tables and watch as you are eating dinner or dessert. I was bummed though cause last time they were out of vanilla ice cream, which really should never happen. For anyone looking for something new to do, this is a great place to go! read more

I really like this place! I love plays and the plays they do here are super funny and fun for anybody. It's always a fun date night for my husband and I. The plays seems always well written and are about hour half long. I love the feel to the whole place! It's got a western feel and all the servers are dressed up. They offer a lot of different types of plays but I usually enjoy the Christmas or Halloween ones most. The seating is pretty tight. Tables are close but that may buy some but not really me. The table is perfect for my husband and I but I could imagine having 4 people at a table would not be as enjoyable. As for the food it's not terrible but also not great. We usually get the pizza like I said not great but not bad but is a little over priced. That's basically what the four stars are for is the food could be better or cheaper everything else is a 5 star experience in my opinion. We will for sure be back for many plays. read more

Well... this isn't your average place so I guess I can't leave an average review. First of all, this is not Broadway type theater. More like juinor high drama class. That said, there are some great actors and good laughs to be had. It's falls into the niche of "silly at heart". If you like puns and possibly being roped into the action, then this is the place for you (my 6'5" hubby was nabbed to do a scene from Titantic- with another dude. Yup, THAT scene). The food is good, although everything has a somewhat chaotic feeling to it trying to balance food and eat in the dark. So if you are OCD, neurotic, or sensory sensitive, take a hard pass. If you're down to have a good time and have like minded friends, give it a try. If you're going to bring a date, make it a double. read more

I've been going to the Desert Star Playhouse for years. It's a funny show. Very slap-stick and goofy. The musical talent is amazing. Great voices and funny actors. The piano players are fun too. They really add to the show. The olio at the end is my personal favorite. It really shows off the actor's vocal talent. The seats are tight, but just enjoy being close friends. The food is good, nothing to write home about, but the outlaw burger is delicious. Their pizza is good too. But you really go to see the singing and laugh at the silliness of it all. Usually, I love going here with my husband. But the current show, "Beauty and the Fantastic Beast" is nothing to shout about. The jokes are getting stale and the acting is not that great. BUT that wasn't the whole problem the other night we went for the show. The after-show-olio literally FILLED that small theater with horrible stage smoke! I'm highly allergic to the stuff and there were NO warning signs or pre mentions of them using such an astounding amount! My lungs still hurt from not being able to breathe properly at that was three days ago! When I complained to management, requests to turn the stuff off were ignored. My husband and I finally just left without finishing the show. I hope they all noticed us gagging, coughing and clutching at our throats! I absolutely LOVED the show, but seating is super awkward and uncomfortable. The tables are tiny and you're basically sitting in the lap of the person next to you. So come with someone you care for. I just saw wicked-er and it was great! You'd think that since tickets and food cost so much, they'd put more money into costumes and the sound system. If you want a good laugh and good food, come here! I went for the first time tonight with my in-laws. The cast was super energetic, hilarious, and I was impressed at the ability to make parodies and improv on the spot. The food was really good as well! I got the Outlaw Burger. It was really good. A little dry; I would have liked it dripping a bit more with the BBQ sauce. They gave me a ton of fries which was awesome. I got a root beer float for dessert and it was average. The worst part of the night is how packed it is. You sit at tables but they put about 4 people at a table that is made for two. Some at our table had to end up putting their food basket on their lap because there was not enough space on the table. Other than that, I really enjoyed the whole experience! read more

After 2 corporate christmas parties for my wife's company here, i have to say i am not a fan. The first year the play was funny and the acting/singing was on par with what you would expect from local theater. That is to say, the entertainment was entertaining enough. For dinner however they had a buffet that while filling, was nothing exceptional. Based on just that one experience i would give this place 3 stars. The company went there again this year however and boy was that a painful experience. The play was amazingly boring. I may have giggled once but that might have been caused by impending insanity due to boredom more than the jokes in the play. Friend and I went to the hungry games. Which the show was quite funny and very enjoyable. We ordered food even after being told it was bad it wasn't we both thought it we quite good not a huge order but not small either so no complaining the price could be dropped a little bit I understand you gotta make the green lol the female servers were adorable in their time feeling costumes. We both enjoyed the music with the piano in the beginning very very fun. One reason I docked a star. It was sooooo cramped we were smooshed. My husband and I have gone to at least 5 of their performances. We enjoy the comedy and that it's all done locally. The food is good- it's basic choices. I don't think that I'd expect a 4 course meal from this type of venue. The waitstaff really huddle and we've never had any mistakes as of yet. The only downside- the theater is a bit small; so some of the tables and chairs are cramped. Otherwise it's a great place for a date night, birthday..... Defiantly something different.....
