Finished a business meeting 6:15 in Herndon, I want dinner before the drive back to Maryland. I see Indian places on the map. I stop at on vegetarian place, not to my liking, so I drive around the corner. Never heard of Chowrastha and (uncharacteristically) did not read Yelp review in advance. Cheerful fun interior. I tell the counter guy I'm vegetarian and ask for his recommendations. We settle on Dragon Cauliflower and I add samosas and rice, and a soft drink. Super efficient. A bit pricey, $22 for that, so not cheap fast food (compare to Chipotle). Food took awhile to come, and worth the wait. Really good. The rice pilaf was good, and the cauliflower was delicious: crunchy spicy , a bit of gooey, really flavorful and well prepared. I will definitely return to try more dishes! The food here has been consistently good over the past many takeout orders we've placed here (and there have been quite a few of those). We love the Goat biryani and Goat curry but the other dishes like the Chicken Frankie and Chicken biryani have been equally good. The only dish till date that didn't live up to our expectations was the Goat Paaya. While we haven't eaten here in person (so I cannot comment on the service), the place is well-located with parking and has a rather spacious feel and neat ambiance. Decided to give this restaurant a try based on the positive reviews online and after visiting it I would say "Stay Away" from this place. Food: Ordered Onion samosas,Mirchi bajji,Samosa Chaat and Chicken Frankie. The samosa chat was cold,soggy,bland,tasteless with excessive yogurt and raw onions-could only eat less than half of the serving and threw away the rest(I hate to waste food but this was bad). Onion samosa was not crispy and tasted more like mint samosa than onion. Mirchi bajji and Frankie were bellow average. Atmosphere/Service: Tightly arranged seating and there is no away you can move around without disturbing others.As it is a self service restaurant your name is called out very loud when your dish is ready and the whole order is not given together so if you order multiple items then get ready to navigate around the tight seating to bring your food. Dirty! Just bad all around. You ask for extra MILD they give you food so spicy it's hard to eat! They don't give rice with $15+ entrees unless u pay extra, first time for everything I guess. The tables are super dirty with hair and old food particles. Even though you ask to dine-in everything is served in to-go containers. You have to grab your own plastic plate and silverware and serve your own food, defeats the purpose of dining in. This place is ran like a third world country restaurant. We specified that we wanted the food to be mild and even called the restaurant after placing the order to make sure that the food would be mild. This was our first time ordering from this place. The food turned out to be exceedingly spicy. We could barely get a few bites in and ended up tossing the biryani and the paneer in the trash. The gobhi wasn't spicy but was overcooked, chewy and extremely salty. Trash! The garlic naan was also quite chewy and didn't feel fresh at all. Trash! The raita that came with the biryani was quite watery and tasted awful. Trash! One of our worst dining experiences in a while. Someone that enjoys really spicy food might enjoy some of food, but it was a waste of money for us. My wife and I went to this restaurant on Monday evening and the place was unexpectedly busy with the restaurant was almost packed. I thought the staff was trying to do their best but the management needs to think about changing a few things to make guests experience better and it'll give staff some control. Now about the food.
