Went to design 1 in hopes that they'd be able to give me the hair I had wanted for my upcoming bridal shower. When I booked the appointment, I was quoted $159 for an eyebrow wax, color and cut. When I arrived, the stylist took me back and asked what we were doing. I showed her this picture. At first she stated that she was confident with that choice. After mixing the color, she came back and informed me that she double booked herself, so she wouldn't be able to give me exactly what I wanted, but that I could come back to finish the process. I was understanding, as it can be naive to expect exact and identical results on different hair. Once she started doing my hair, she immediately began rushing through the process. She only applied bleach to the top layer of my hair, so she could get to her other appointment. Once it was time to wash out, I had looked at myself and noticed there was color all over my skin. I also had to ask about the eye brow wax, in which I received a response that didn't sound like it was planned to be done. She then brought someone else over to do the wax because she told me she didn't feel like doing it. After washing it out, I stood up and realized I was soaked from my head down to my butt. Once she started drying my hair, I had realized it was a complete different color than I was hoping for, but tried to remain optimistic that it would still turn out well. Once it was done, she walked me up to the counter to pay and walked away. They then told me the total I needed to pay: $287. Almost DOUBLE what I was quoted. After inquiring about the extra charge, I was told I received a "balayage" and that I can't expect my hair to take exactly like the picture. I tried informing the staff that I was not given a full service due to the stylist double booking her appointments. They still made me pay. I spent the next morning scrubbing my face and neck to get the color off, as that was the day of my bridal shower and I didn't want color all over for this event. I'm amazed that they were okay with over charging, after admitting it was not what I asked for and letting me leave with my backside soaked and color all over my skin. read more

This was my first visit after attempting several visits at others spas on the east side of the state , AKA "Detroit " area . Extremely satisfied with my visit, I had a Facial , I love getting a facial. Getting my pores cleaned, my skin exfoliating, hydrated, and must needed. I was assigned to Sam, she has been an Esthetician for 20 years and Yes amazing. I guess if your old school of getting a Facial. Omg she is the one. If you're Not then see her anyways . Unimpressive, overpriced, and the worst customer service I've ever experienced. A group of us planned a spa day for my mom's birthday. Unfortunately, she got lost driving there and was running 15 minutes late. The massage therapists assigned to us were only concerned about their schedules and not the purpose of our appointment. Shooting me nasty looks and talking down to me as I was holding up their schedule trying to make sure my mom was okay, not stranded on the road with the snow. I tried to explain to them that this appointment was a gift for my mother and this was suppose to be a relaxing experience for all of us. I tried to convey that I understand the situation we put them in by being late and understood that they would need to stop our services at the appropriate allotted time to not interrupt their next client. However this therapist silenced me, and would not listen and continued to minimize me. If you're looking for a relaxing spa experience, spend your money somewhere else. They do not respect their customer's lives and treat customer as an inconvenience if the customer disrupt the therapist's precious schedule. To the owners - treat your workers better so that they are not taking out their work frustrations on your dwindling customers. read more

I decided to use this spa to get a manicure for my wedding. I had heard good things and wanted to get a well done manicure. I did some looking on your website and saw that you offer Dip manicures. So I made an appointment. When I arrived, the front desk was very nice and welcoming (as they always are when I have been here in the past). But when I sat down to get my manicure, the woman who did my nails was very short and a bit rude. Now I don't mind not having a conversation. But she wasn't very pleasant to be around. She did mention that Dip Manicures were a new treatment they offer. But I assumed the quality would still be up to standards. Unfortunately, I was very wrong. When I left I noticed that my pinky nail was very messed up. Which doesn't make sense because my nails weren't wet... So I went back to get it fixed and the woman who did my nails didn't even acknowledge me once. And I never got an apology. She had someone else come out and fix my nail. Which didn't even actually fix it. She filed off the top layer and re-painted it and left. I sat with my hand under the fan for 15 minutes. Not a single person came to check if my nail was fixed or even dry yet. I spent a lot on a manicure and it was for my wedding. I needed a haircut for a funeral, stat. I had a packed schedule this week dealing with some incredibly difficult situations. But... Gotta try to get my hair looking decent - I had also hoped it might be nice to do something for myself for that spare hour. I regret it. I have (or rather, had) very long hair. Roxie and I agreed on a length, then she cut. And cut. And kept trimming up. Its at least 2 inches shorter than we agreed. I planned to cut off quite a bit, but expected to be able to braid it and put it in a bun (as I explicitly told her). I don't know if she was unhappy to take a last minute appointment, because she was also a little rough. Like I have never had a cosmetologist jam a long fingernail in my ear while shampooing. Is it the worst haircut I have ever had? No. Do I like it?Also, no. Its cut. It will grow back. Its certainly not the worst thing to happen to me this week, but it absolutely made a bad week just that much worse. I appreciate that Design 1 could get me in last minute on a Monday. Thats the only real positive. I will never, ever go back. I was charged an obscene amount for a basic shampoo and cut, and I never even got the stupid water and lemon. Maybe Roxie didn't like me because that day, looking pretty was the least of my worries. Maybe she was overbooked. But she slaughtered my hair. I waited a few days to see if I would get used to it to review. I don't even think its straight. What the heck happened? She didn't even let me look in the mirror at the back when it was done. Why I tipped her so much is beyond me. I was trying to be nice, and I guess I was still hoping for the best. When I got home and the plastic bag she tucked behind my neck was still there, I knew I was in big trouble. My home mirror didn't lie. For $65 for a 20- minute shampoo and cut, I feel sick that now I have to be seen like this. Thankfully, its just hair. It grows back. But, for real, I would rather cut my own hair with a rusty butter knife. read more

I had an appointment last week and it was my first time to the salon. I have heard great things so I thought I would give the salon a try. Sadly, it was a complete disaster. The lobby was clean and nice but the salon area was dated and a complete mess. The color area had hair dye splattered on the walls and the shampoo bowls looked like they haven't been cleaned in years. The towels weren't folded and just thrown on to the shelf. The stylist suggested I get a partial balyage and I followed her guidance, but I felt rushed the entire time and my hair was not processed long enough. I ended up having orange colored roots. At the end of the appointment she said I could come back within the next two weeks if I didn't like anything and she would fix it for free.... not the greatest way to end an appointment... I just don't think I trust her to fix my hair when she already messed it up. I don't fully blame her because I do believe this falls on mismanagement of the salon. 1. the stylist should have longer appointment times based on her abilities, 2. she clearly needs more support or guidance. I took my Mom here for her birthday on Easter weekend. We had 80 minute deep tissue massages as well as pedicures. We waited a few minutes to be called back after checking in. All the staff at this location were super nice and friendly. Anyway, I had a male massage therapist. I asked for deep tissue, and normally, people do not use enough pressure for me. This guy totally used more than enough pressure, which is amazing for me. Awesome massage. My Mom enjoyed hers as well. Pedis were next, and they put us in a room together. Easily the best pedicure I have ever had! With some extra time on a Friday and needing some pampering, I called Design 1 and booked an afternoon pedicure. I'd never been to this salon, but my sister gets her hair cut here, and it wasn't far, so I figured I'd try it out. I arrived to find a lovely and very large salon. After checking in, I was offered a drink. My request of water was met with the further query, "Lemon or cucumber?" Cool....although I do prefer my H20 plain and that is what I got. I cannot give the pedi a full 5 stars for a couple of reasons: --I was kept waiting for several minutes past my appointment time without explanation or apology --Nail color selection was somewhat limited. They have only OPI polish, which is great, but apparently rotate OPI collections, none of which are that large. FWIW, though, I did end up loving my color ("A to Z-urich"). --the nail technician presented me with a menu of available pedicures. The list did not include prices OR their simplest least expensive pedi. Luckily I had checked out available services on the website. --price points are a bit high for Grand Rapids. The signature pedicure was $55. But if you are getting a service for the first time, they do have a $10 off coupon on their website. Thus, I paid only $45, which is not bad for a full hour of true pampering. However, on the plus side: --the signature whirlpool pedicure was awesome! It included a scrub and a mint mask, and really was a great way to spend an hour. --I liked the separate pedicure room. --the nail technician, Amanda, was incredibly careful and thorough, and seemed as if she actually enjoyed her job. --the foot massage she gave me was amazing. --A week later, the polish is holding up very well. I'll have to find time for another pedicure during my next GR visit! read more

I went here for an up-dip and make up for a wedding. Kama did my hair and did a wonderful job. I took a picture of what I wanted and she did a nice job recreating a do similar. The make up on the other hand, not so much. After the first eye try, I looked like a clown... Like Mimi I the drew Cary show. Second try was better, but the donation that was supposed to magically match my skin tone made my face two shades darker than my neck. When she was done, the make up looked very caked on and not natural at all. I ended up going home and toning it down myself. Shouldn't have to do that for $50. read more

I recently moved back to this area and needed a haircut and an eyebrow wax. They got me in quickly and my stylist was wonderful. I used to come here when I was in high school a really long time ago. It was so much more trendy and current decor wise. I don't know why they changed everything to sort of run of the mill suburban decor, but it takes away from the experience. That is really my only complaint though, and maybe I'm imagining that it used to be better. I visit Design 1 about once or twice a year for a pedicure. I go with my mom (who pays) and it's really enjoyable. I wouldn't pay $60 to get a pedicure normally, but if it's more of a spa experience you want, then it's worth it. She doesn't like other places where it's loud and not relaxing, so she goes here. When it's two of us, they'll usually put us in a smaller room with two chairs. My pedicures always last a long time, and one time when it did chip off, I went back and they fixed it for me. From a simple trim to a "oh dear god help me" cut, I have always felt well advised and gorgeous after visiting this salon. I am a woman who has maintained long hair for several years. J.P. respects that. Instead of suggesting unmanageable styles, she suggests a solid haircut that suits my routines. Her hair product recommendations are simply incredible. At many other salons I have felt that sales outweighed good advice. I often purchase hair care supplies at Design One because they just plain work. I am never urged to overspend; the stylist shows me what she used that smells so wonderful and works so well toward my desired look. Aside from my favorite stylist, this establishment hosts polite and attentive receptionists. Coffee, water, and comfortable couches are available for any wait time. They also keep a list of products suggested by your stylist for a future visit - just in case you want to get that great look at a later date. It is true that the service costs a little more. However, the comfort of knowing that my stylist isn't going nuts on my hair is well worth it. To conclude, fellow yelpers, the product suggestions are awesome, the stylists are great, the reception is ideal, and I highly recommend a visit. read more

I wasn't happy with my experience, I made the appointment online and they said the service (blonde highlights) would be $150.00, a little pricey, but okay. When I got there I told her that I wanted to be blonder for the summer, so she upsold me ( a certain technique that she wanted to use that I never heard of, something to make my hair shiny, etc.), for a total of $200. When I got home I was disappointed, my hair looked darker and where she had used the "technique" looked flat and one dimensional. I called the manager who said she had to talk to the stylist. The manager called back and said I would have to pay more to get the highlights. I explained that I had agreed to everything the stylist had recommended and if $200 isn't enough to get blonde highlights(!) she should have told me that upfront. She finally agrees and when I see the stylist she is openly hostile and argumentative. I was in tears. I got what I wanted in the end, but it was a very frustrating experience. read more

I've gotten quite a few pedicures in my days, and I've had both good and bad. This was definitely one for the good. Was it $55 good? Well, no not really. I've gotten an equally good pedicure for significantly less and felt like I got just as much attention. The chairs were your typical pedicure chair with the drain tub/whirpool. The headrests on the chairs were at a very odd angle and it wasn't especially comfortable to have my head back against it. I am pretty used to the massage functions on these chairs and could not get theirs figured out. My nail tech was very friendly and she did a great job and I did get a couple of coupons for next time, but I really doubt I'll go back. I just can't get past the $55 price tag. read more
