Be prepared for terrible customer service if you get a botched cut. If your visit is feeling "wrong", speak up or spend a year growing out a terrible haircut. That's all I'll say... In response to Jeffrey, I do have a different last name now (starts with B) and I have already been in touch with your customer service team. This cut happened last year; I was compelled to leave a short review when pictures of this cut appeared in my iPhone "memory reels" yesterday. I was gaslit for weeks with your team telling me that "this could be a great learning experience for the stylist" when all I wanted was a refund for a botched cut. I specifically said I wanted to keep as much of my length as possible, as my hair grows extremely slowly (1/4 inch per month) and I had spent years growing it out. I provided the attached picture as a reference. My natural hair texture wasn't considered at all for this cut, which resulted in a Tetris-like choppy ends. Because of my bad experience, I didn't want to interact with the stylist again or come back to the salon. I sent multiple polite emails trying to solve this matter civilly; I didn't want a refund for the color (which I was happy with), just the cut. However, apart from getting a new cut to fix the layers (essentially going "short") or coming into the salon to be "inspected", no help was offered because a refund "would affect the stylist's commission". Never mind that this cut has affected me for nearly a year as I have grown it out at. Please note that I have kept the stylist's name out of this review, as I do not wish to affect her future bookings. I am not looking to ruin anyone's reputation, just a disappointed customer leaving honest feedback. read more

I had an edgy bob, and decided to go back to a pixie cut. I showed Caroline the pixie cut below (see woman w dark hair), saying that is what I wanted. I also explained my perspective that with a short cut, if the details are 'off', including the length, it can change the entire look of the cut. The cut I got (pics of me with platinum hair) was off proportionally, and it was too short. It is a bit of a shock to go from longer hair to a short cut, yet getting one that is not what you wanted -- and too short, is so upsetting. Key differences that I see are: ** cut on dark hair vs my hair -- Substantial amount of hair goes to bottom of ears; only whisps of hair fall to mid ear -- Side bangs are angled from cheek bone to bottom of ear; my cheek bone is fully exposed, and hair is at least 1/2" too short at its longest point. - Length of side bangs is close to length in back; difference in length of side bangs vs hair in back of head is more significant with my cut. - Cut on back of head transitions nicely to rest of cut; cut on back of head bulges, and does not transition nicely to rest of cut. I love the cut I wanted. The above discrepancies created a different look - one that I did not want. I am so disappointed. I immediately went to the store to buy some head bands so I can 'hide' the cut for the next few months, until it is long enough to get the cut I wanted in the first place. Sadly, I'm unable to review the services at Jeffrey Richard Salon as I wasn't able to secure an appointment without providing my credit card information (and in today's environment, how many people are actually willing to do that?). While I can appreciate the annoyance and the financial impact of last minute cancellations or no shows (something I've never personally done), I presume the management at Jeffrey Richard Salon will be equally understanding of my discomfort of providing my credit card information to an establishment I've never been to before. Sometimes taking a risk on whether a new client will show up to their very first appointment (that by the way, I was very excited about) is the cost of doing business, and business at Jeffrey Richard Salon must be very good as it appears they're not very serious about securing new clients. An experience like no other! It all started off with me messaging the salon on the weekend. I thought it wouldn't be until Monday that someone would get in touch with me. It was the very next day (Sunday) that I received a pleasant response back with all my questions answered in the message. I was given a few names of hairstylists to make an appointment with, and called Monday to make an appointment with Amy. On the day of my arrival at the Hair Salon, I was greeted by Elise. She was very sweet! I was happy to see someone that loved what they do, with a true genuine smile! Thank you Elise! She gave me a profile card to fill out and it wasn't long until Amy my Hairstylist came to greet me. Amy gave me a tour of the Salon, which I've never had before at a Salon. I moved to the Grand Rapids area from a much bigger metropolitan area where I had really found the perfect establishment to get my hair cut. The reviews were really great but I'm picky about my place so I needed to experience it for myself to make my judgement on a salon I'll keep going back to. I had Erin who colored and cut my hair. I thought about not telling you her name because I don't want all her appointments to always be filled up so I can still use her! Erin did everything I asked and I really feel like she truly listened! I have brown hair which I feel is hard to get the perfect color instead of blonde. I loved my experience at Jeffrey Richard Salon. I live in Manhattan, but travel to Grand Rapids for work and stopped in for a haircut on a Monday night at 8pm (there was a cancellation). The entire experience was .. if this salon were a hotel, a 5-star experience. Or maybe if it was a restaurant it'd have a James Beard award. What I loved: - I was genuinely taken care of the entire time I was there. From waiting in the front area (with several drink options - I chose a pineapple juice blend), to getting a tour of the salon and retail space, to being greeted by my stylist, to checking out. It was all really great service - My haircut was awesome. I love it when a stylist spends time *listening* to what you want, asks questions about how you style your hair and what products you use.. so that they may give you the cut that makes the most sense for you. I feel too often other salons jump to cutting your hair while you're thinking "uh oh, do they even know what I want?" - They massage your head and neck in the chair and again when shampooing your hair - The space is just.. beautiful. - It's a no tipping salon, the first I've been to. Takes so much confusion out of the equation. - They have different 'levels' (and therefore price points) for stylists. A haircut starts at $40 I got my haircut from Cindy. She was awesome, period. Specializing in Aveda styling and customer care concepts while using only Aveda's 99% natural products, they are good to customers and the environment. Walking through the store area in the front, leads you to the check-in station. To your right is the chairs and to your left is the shampoo and color bar areas. Like the other reviews state, you will be treated to a heavenly shampoo and massage. I really like that they dim the lights in the shampoo area, creating a zen-like experience. Cindy was a wonderful stylist who listened to what I wanted and made suggestions to improve upon my ideas. I only requested a cut but she gave me some good suggestions on my color and how to take care of it. She showed me the products she used on my hair but thankfully didn't try to up-sell me on all of them either, the way stylists do at other salons. Next time I'm out of products, I'm coming back here to get them just because they weren't forced on me! Keep in mind that this is a no tipping salon. I wasn't sure how to feel about this at first since it's so ingrained in me to tip when I have good service, as I did here. But they are really clear about it and surprisingly, it make the visit more enjoyable because I didn't real the pressure at the end. I was a little skeptical of the salon experience. I'm a regular guy, who usually gets regular haircuts. I've been going to the normal chains for my cuts for about 5 years now, at about $22 a visit. What I found at JRS surprised me. For what you get, the cost is worth it 5 fold. It is a little bit more, but not much really. Plus, men get a free hot towel and lotion (oil?) facial with your shampoo after your cut. It's so relaxing. I'm hooked. It can be a bit busy, but once you find your stylist and start scheduling a month or do in advance each time, it's easy to get in. FWIW i see Meike, she's friendly, open to your ideas for your cut, easy to talk to, and is very professional and great at what she does. read more

I came to Jeffrey Richard's salon, crying and sad. I was plagued with severely damaged hair from a salon that shall remain nameless. The experience of going to any salon is kinda of scary, you never know with curly hair what can happen. However, this was a relaxing, and healthy experience for my hair and for my me. I have visited this salon twice. My first haircut was done by Carissa. Carissa helped me with my broom strawlike hair, that I came in with. We figured out a hair plan for restoration and health. She was able to rescue a majority of my hair. I did have to have my hair cut very short. Slowly the hair has grown back, but my natural curl was not restored yet, so I went back for a second visit and we were able to recut the dead hair with Amy. I got my hair cut once again to about my ears. Probable the shortest I have ever have had it. This helped with regaining it's strength and health. Both time I also received a moisture treatment to help bring moisture back to my hair. I really enjoy the hospitality when you first come in. I also enjoyed the massage with the wash. It is so relaxing and puts you to ease. I felt comfortable that came here for a hair rescue. I will be back for a third time soon enough! read more

I have been a client at JRS for over 5 years. The staff remains nearly unchanged, which says a lot about how Jeff runs the place. I really appreciate the kindness of everyone at the salon, but when I get in the chair, I am treated with the appropriate amount of sass and gossip that I look forward to every 28 days. The products they have are sometimes out of stock, which has happened to me on several occasions, but it is close enough to just pop back in there and get what I need. Leslie will grab it off the shelf and hold a product for you once it is in. The art, the music, the aroma, the lights, the cleanliness, all add up to a great place for relaxation. The relaxation comes from the head and neck massage when you get in the chair, and then the facial at the sinks. That is my favorite part, it makes me feel so good! The beverage service is top notch! I usually go in just before work, so that hot cup of coffee really helps me rally for work. They used to have beer and wine until some nameless, low-rent, clipper-cutting, chop shop ruined it for all of Grand Rapids. Way to go, Judes! Nonetheless, overall it is a great experience that I would never give up, no matter how bad the economy gets! read more

Caveat Emptor - This place has changed from a really nice well run business to a no fly zone; Jeffrey is not the man he was when I last saw him in January! My experience today (6.30.20) was rude, unprofessional and amounted to a 180 degree turn from what this salon used to be. It's changed in many ways, all new stylists, new manager, no customers and poorly stocked products. 50% of the stations were gone (related to COVID distancing - good), mask requirement - good and they require you sign a legal document essentially indemnifying them from all liability for all known and unknow diseases... My May appointment was cancelled because of COVID restrictions. Background: Moved from CA 4 years ago, found the salon on the Internet...good reviews so I tried it. Amy was the manager and she paired me with Breanne. Both were professional, exuded kindness and customer service, good culture/operations model...positive energy. Many mature talented professionals - quality work. Short conversation regarding my hair, style and preferences...business proper, natural part in the middle, short...1.5 inches and layered and she nailed it. Several commented on the cut...how nice it looked. I'd just rolled out of the service...Navy special forces so presented a bit rough...8-9 inches of hair all round. I enjoyed this salon for 3 years. Dial forward to 1.30.20. I was working overseas for the government for 15 months and called for an appointment with Breanne...Amy told me she'd left...my next three asks were also no longer working there. Carolyn was suggested - Carolyn's cut totally missed the mark! I presented with 10-11 inches of hair (full head) from working security and covert operations and requested the cut above. They cut (at my request) several 9" strands for children's wigs (for Oncology)...never received confirmation but trust it was done. I looked like Moe Howard (Three Stooges) on the top and a Marine cut on the bottom. I needed shampoo and conditioner...they were out of men's...paid in full ($72.00) and was told they would call my in 1-2 weeks when it arrives. Returned the next day and adjustments were made. Recent visit: Katie called me 6.29 to tell me the shampoo/rinse I ordered 1.20 was in. She asked if I wanted a 6.30 cancellation - yes. I arrived on time wearing my N-95 medical grade mask. There was 1 woman waiting, no other customers and 6 employees. Very lethargic door greeting - my temperature was normal. I was then asked to sign their COVID Release. This was clearly written by lawyers - I declined and stated "I was not informed of this requirement and realize declining means I will no get a haircut." I offered to pay 50% and asked for my pre-paid products. They returned with 1 of 4...looked on the men's product shelf - nothing. I asked them to please credit my card and walked outside and stood on the curb. During this brief time, the two women behind the counter became obnoxious and menacing...they were argumentative and clearly upset because I would not sign the agreement. I told them had this been disclosed, I would have asked for a review copy and given the content declined the appointment and simply picked up my pre-paid products. Total time inside the salon was maybe 40 seconds. The woman at the door requested my credit card to process the credit and returned it to me on the curb 3-4 minutes later (still had my mask on) with no receipt. The other customer was standing mask on 10 feet from me...she was there when I arrived...not 1 customer inside and still waiting). I asked for one and was told the transaction would process tonight - don't worry. I again requested a receipt and shared "because it was transacted, the terminal would print one." I was having confidence and trust issues with the business, new employees and wanted verification of the credit. Just when you think the insanity is over....rather then receive a receipt...a phone is given to me...it's Jeffrey...who proceeded to without asking for a statement or experience debrief...yell at me to "put on my mask and get out of his salon...I'm calling 911 to get you arrested..." This was loud enough for the other customer/employee who gave me the phone to hear. Clearly the employee enjoyed what she'd done. The rant went a couple minutes and it was clear, this employee had not been honest with him. Favorite Murphy Law - "Never argue with a fool because a passerby may not know the difference." When he broke for air...I told him I was in the salon about 30 seconds with a mask and have been outside for the past 10 minutes trying to get my product credit...then he yelled "I'm not going to give it to you and never come back again." The denial of my refund for products they never delivered did not surprise me given the experience and I have no intention of returning. The $72.00 credit wasn't issued; I was not charged for the no cut. Statement of fact: American Express fraud called last night; compromised card - under investigation. read more

Truly, the best hair cut I've had in years. She kept my length while adding beautiful layers. She listened and then created exactly what I asked for. First haircut there today. Not first ever, I have been getting haircuts for years. Just my first one at this salon. New clients sign a form with no-cell phone or noisy kids and NO TIPPING policy, which I appreciate since I like freedom from all of these. Drink service, retail hair product selection were great. Head massage and mini facial were way beyond my expectations. Haircut was good, may go back later today to have it cut shorter around the listening dishes. In all, peaceful space with good jazz in background, very customer-focused staff, worth the $30 for the head and face massages alone. I worked with a stylist named Kenzie F. who had a great technical knowledge, and was able to get my hair to platinum in one application. I consider this to be a business of integrity. Chris at the front desk did a great job. She took my coat and hung it up for me. Which was a nice touch. Then, since it was my first time in, she gave me a quick tour of the place and introduced me to their product line. She offered me up a free drink as well. The hot tea was very welcome since I had just finished shoveling my driveway before I came in. Cindy cut my hair and gave me a great customer service experience as well. She started out with a relaxing aromatherapy head and shoulder rub. She listened to my very poor description of how I normally get my hair cut. Took that and made some recommendations that ultimately turned out to be a much better hair cut. We also had good conversation throughout my hair cut. Then, she finished it all off with mini facial, hot towel and a head/neck message while washing my hair. Which, by the way, was amazing. Finally, one very small thing stood out. While is was getting my hair cut, I over heard the stylist next to us talking to what I assume was her apprentice. While they were working on the woman next to me, the stylist noticed that a lot of guys had recently shown up for appointments. She asked the other girl to make sure there were plenty of hot towels ready for us in the Shampoo Lounge. Her awareness ensured that all of us guys had hot towels. Came here with a bridal party and it was a great experience! I have come to one other Aveda Salon in Southeastern Michigan and both times the stylist have been very professional and helpful. The minute we walked in we had someone offering latte's and coffee, grabbing our jackets, and being very helpful. My stylist was Gwen and she was really fun! She didn't mind that I kept moving my head and she was very accommodating. I brought a picture in and she was able to incorporate my ideas as well as suggest things for me. I got my hair done at 7:45 in the morning and it did not move at all until I pulled the bobby pins out at midnight! The girls who got their makeup done looked great and the overall feel to the salon is trendy and inviting. I would definitely come back! I thought the price was reasonable for sure. It is a "no-tipping" salon but I think they just incorporate the tip into the price of the service rendered. read more
