And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

I will note that I never had service performed by this company, in spite of my multiple efforts to…read moreengage them for repairs. They completely missed the first estimate appointment and blamed traffic. They rescheduled the estimate twice after that. When the estimator finally showed up, he was unprofessional as well as late. It took almost a week for them to send the estimate, and it was a "Snapchat" screenshot of the write up, sent via text. After requesting the formal estimate be sent via email THREE times, it still never came, despite the promise that it was on the way. I have contacted the company more than 5 times via phone, with no response. Do NOT EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME. This is a shoddy operation with no respect for their customers.

It is cliche, but if I could give negative stars I would. Dealing with contractors can be…read morestressful, but never could we have imagined our dealings with Allied would be akin to a living nightmare. Allied was hired to perform some minor repairs on the property we were purchasing. They were hired to repair soffits and trim, paint the house exterior, and repair one section of gutter above the garage. All of this work was approximated to cost $10,000. Granted, the amount of work that was to be performed did not equate the high price. However, we did request a rush on the work due to inspection scheduling constraints. Although the pricing was high, we agreed that it was fair due to the deadline date we requested. From there we were insured by one of the partners of Allied, the work would be completed in 2 to 3 business days, there would be many hired workers finishing the job, and the job would be completed to our satisfaction. However, this entire business compromise was rendered false during the subsequent few weeks they were working on our property. First, Allied's lazy and conniving attitude toward our wants, as customers, became evident within a few days of signing a business agreement with them. They lied to us claiming they could not use our selected paint choice, Berh Premium Plus Ultra, because it would "clog the paint sprayer." However, they did not even use spray machines to paint our house, but instead used workers who hand roll the entire siding and trim with Gidden brand paint, which is cheaper in cost and quality, and did not compensate us the cost difference for the cheaper paint. The most dishonest aspect of this action is their quote given to us was made with Behr products requested. It would have been extra to use the exact color we wanted, again, because of the flimsy excuse that turned out not to be true. The job itself was appalling: paint on the driveway, painted over wires so when moved the color was still the old shade, and there were visible drip lines on the side of the house from running in the brushes. Save yourself the hassle and money if dealing with this lazy company and a site manger who reeks of booze more often than not, and just pick up an old paint roller and paint your house yourself; trust us, you'll do a better job in the long run.
