Customer service? Pleasant enough. Booking is so convenient it almost makes you forget why you're here. I've bounced between a few different stylists--mainly because convenience wins over loyalty these days. Bonding with a hairdresser? That era is long gone. The salon's vibe is... off. My last haircut? A masterclass in abruptness. One second I'm wrapped in a robe, the next my stylist has vanished to the front desk, leaving me to fumble with the robe like it's a solo escape room challenge. Apparently, my time was up. Cut done. Move along. Pay. No lingering niceties. The stylist did mutter something about buying products--but knowing me, I wasn't going to inhale her stinky, over-perfumed concoctions, so she moved on. It was the strangest finale to a haircut I've ever endured. A mix of "your time is up" and "thank goodness there's no small talk left." Speaking of small talk, it was painful. Her preferred topic? Her rescue pets--forever. And trust me, thirty seconds is more than enough. As for the cut itself? Meh. Mediocre at best. read more

I have been going to Jim for years. Always happy with what he's done. However, the last few cuts I haven't been happy with the finished cut as I didn't feel listened to and requested a touch up. I get it's an inconvenience, but listen the first time, despite if you know another client is waiting. These haircuts aren't cheap and our time is valuable. So, today, after getting ANOTHER redo on a cut, that I offered to compensate him for, he says no, don't worry. Then at the door in front of the staff tells me that perhaps he is not the right stylist for me. What??? I have been going to him for years and to make me feel so uncomfortable at the front desk in front of other people is unacceptable. read more

I've been going to Detlev for many years ever since they took over the spot and made it an Aveda lifestyle salon. The stylist and staff are extremely friendly and professional. You are immediately greeted and offered a refreshment. They do a great job of keeping your profile on their tablets and making sure to customize and personalize your service to give you the best experience. My former stylist moved which initially made me nervous as my stylist worked great with me and always knew how to style my hair and give me a new look when I wanted one. However, transitioning to a new stylist was seamless. It's not inexpensive but you are paying for quality service and products. Overall, a knowledgeable team and great salon. read more

If a picture is worth a thousand words, I'm guessing I'd need to post at least a dozen more images to more clearly exhibit the complexity of the catastrophe following a recent botched hair color job. After three salons declined to tend to my tangled tresses, I arrived at Detlev Aveda Lifestyle Salon on a Friday afternoon. My stylist carefully examined the mounds of my matted hair and assured me she would do her best to unravel it without cutting. I was informed about the cost for every half hour (I highly doubt there's a line-item for this sort of mess anywhere on a salon's price list) and my stylist wasted no time to begin. Almost immediately, other members of the salon's talented team pitched in, offering their skilled hands to speed up the process. Dedicated and optimistic, these amazing stylists tended to me and my head in between scheduled clients, while color processed and treatment times permitted. When it became apparent that my situation would require more time than the two-hour slot I had quickly snapped up earlier, Molly didn't hesitate to stay beyond her scheduled shift and Alex worked close the witching hour and way past the last Metrorail departure she used to return home. After Ester closed the salon, she too jumped in and quieted my apologies assuring me that undoing knots (nearly strand by strand!) was stress relieving for her. True or not, the staff remained focused and determined throughout. Even the salon owner, Detlev, took on the challenge and with muscles flexed, he managed to free my hair from the last knot that was as solid as a rock. During my ten hour (unscheduled) visit, I witnessed many satisfied customers and I understood why. In my case, this team tackled what many would have wanted to resolve with scissors. The invoice total was far less than what I had quickly calculated (and feared!) and certainly not commensurate with the service rendered. My request to leave an increased amount was politely declined. Nevertheless I challenged: "Come on now, who does this anymore? Who assists a first-time client with a tangled mess created elsewhere, works overtime and keeps a business open until the job is successfully complete?!" then the response came: "We do!" I came in for a blow-dry and the salon is inviting and clean. What did not appreciate or like was the pricing inaccuracy as well as hidden fee for an "environmental fee" that I was not informed of when being charged or booked and if I wouldn't have asked for a paper receipt (which was not on recycled paper) I would have never known. The receptionist in the front didn't even know how to explain said fee and had to look to a co-worker to explain. I was charged $70 for a blow-dry that was done in 15 mins because while my hair is long, it is not difficult to dry the website said $65 for long hair, I was charged $70 and then + $5 for the so called fee and then on top of that, gratuity which I will always gladly pay for if job is done well was based on the total cost inclusive of fee and NOT just service. The reason and only reason I am giving an additional two stars is my stylist was very nice and did a good job. I just don't appreciate shady business practices. If it wasn't for the stylist this would be a one star review. read more

If you walk in and aren't sure which products are best for your hair the experts are always more than happy to recommend what is best for you. I shop here often and love the products and have never been disappointed. Whether you are a local or tourist I highly recommend stopping in and looking at the products and getting your hair done. I'm not one to get my hair cut often but when I do, I get a free haircut! Funny, I was standing around the area and a lady approached me with a card for a Complimentary cut. It's been a while so I said "why not?" and I can't resist a free deal, must be my lucky day!! My stylists name was Mercy. She was really good and attentive. I was offered water, tea or coffee and even though I wanted Champagne, water seemed just as good. ;P Mercy gave me a real nice cut that included a scalp massage with Aveda oils that smelled amazing. Then she washed my hair, followed by another amazing massage. I was relaxed at that point. Mercy then finished with my fabulous hairstyle. She was confident and professional at all times. They try to sell you Aveda products by the end of the visit but are not pushy about it. I didn't buy any but I do have to say that the products used on me smelled really good and effective. The salon is right in the corner of Fuller and Grand Ave in Coconut Grove. Easy location to find. Parking on the other hand could be difficult to find depending the date and hours you visit. There is street parking available and also a couple parking lots nearby that charge $5 to $10 depending on events in the area. The salon is clean and sanitary with modern décor. read more

I have been a proud aveda salon customer for over three years. Prior to this, I frequented Pyure salon in coconut creek, until I found Candice and Detlev in the grove, a wonderful salon with plenty of street parking. The aveda service is like no other - your appointment always runs on time, they are efficient and helpful. The service is always excellent. They offer you delicious teas and relaxing head and hand massages during your shampoo. The products, while pricey, make you feel like you're at the spa all the time. Prior to my aveda experiences, I attended many other salons in Miami and Kendall, and spent countless hours sitting in a chair waiting for someone to so much as look at me. I cannot stand the typical Miami salon environment, where people get serviced based on how frequent they attend the salon, and not their appointment time, where your timeliness never matters, and you sit in a chair until someone decides they are ready to help you. This will NEVER happen at an aveda salon, and certainly not at detlev. Go get your color done with Candice and thank me later. read more

She double checked to make sure that the products she used were safe and could be used on a pregnant woman. I have been extremely happy with Detlev salon's color and styling services (Linda, etc. are AMAZING). This is a review of the keratin treatment in particular. I had the keratin done in December, and asked a lot of questions prior to doing it because I have A LOT of experience with keratin, and wanted to avoid what I see happening too often lately with keratin treatments: they last less and less, and cost more, requiring you to get back in the chair every 2-3 months (that should not be the case). I didn't want that to be the case when I did the keratin treatment at Detlev, and yet, after barely a full two months, I have deep frizz after running or being in the humidity, and feel like the keratin is close to "done" and back to my natural texture. I feel like I wasted the $ I spent back in December. I am NOT a keratin novice and have done different treatments over the past 10 years - I take VERY good care of my hair in order to make keratin last - I wash only twice a week, no sulfate, no salt water, no chlorine...and still, after just two months, I feel like most of the keratin from December is gone. I am disappointed that the keratin I was promised would last longer is not lasting longer, that I am already back to having to "work" on my hair, and that I now have to plan for keratin (again) far earlier than what I expected. I am frustrated because I feel like I wasted $ on a product of insufficient strength. I hope that Detlev changes their choice of keratin to match the quality of the rest of their products. if I'm going to pay a premium for keratin, I expect it to last far longer than what this is lasting. I hope you will consider other keratin alternatives that deliver higher value to customers. read more

Violet did an amazing job on my color. I had bands from previous coloring which she was able to cover down to the roots. She did everything I asked her to fix and the color turned out perfect. Let me start by saying that I was hesitant to get a haircut during Covid- but I'm glad I did because it was exactly what I needed to feel 'normal' again. From the start- scheduling an appointment was a breeze, and I appreciated the extended/late hours. They check your temperature prior to even entering the salon and make you sanitize your hands/phone. It was spotless and even the brushes were disinfected between use. I was impressed. They really cared about the safety of their staff and clients. Now- my stylist was Alex. She was amazing and patient. Gave me the best head massage and I felt so relaxed that I fell asleep during my appointment. She did an amazing job and was extremely meticulous with my cut and blow dry. The price point was also decent- it was $45 for wash, cut and blow dry on med/long hair. I will definitely be returning and happy I stumbled upon this little gem. read more

Linda was terrible. I went to get my hair/makeup done and she did not listen to me at all. I asked for soft waves and she teased my hair and put rollers in it. She also did the opposite of what I asked my makeup to be and said "no you don't want that, you want this". I had to tie my hair in a ponytail and redo my makeup at home. I wrote an email to Detlev about my experience later that day and never got a response. I've gotten a haircut here before and had a great experience, but Linda was terrible and I'm honestly not going back ever again. read more

Since closing the Van Michael Salon on SoBe these guys have been my new salon home. Typical Aveda salon where everything is very zen, the staff friendly and inviting and the hair stylists great. I've had my curly hair cut by 2 of the team there, both of which I can't remember their names (FML). They both did a great job with my hair, making sure to chop off all the dead hair and rejuvenate my layers. They always do me a solid by moisturizing and deep conditioning the hell out of my hair and scalp and also providing a mini scalp massage which is always nice. read more
