They also close occasionally so check the website before coming as they post updates. This is the specific website for this location: https://yogananda.org/locations-international-headquarters#Visiting%20Hours. The website is also wrong here but I've contacted Yelp about making the changes. This is the international headquarters of the Self-Realization Fellowship. The organization was started by Paramahansa Yogananda, a Hindu monk and guru, who was very influential in introducing yoga to the West. The SRF is a spiritual organization that doesn't teach Hinduism but focuses on the specific teachings of Yogananda. They have many locations throughout the world and a few in the Los Angeles area. Their Lake Shrine location in the Pacific Palisades is particularly beautiful. This location is much smaller but it is still lovely and peaceful. Yogananda established the headquarters in 1925 and lived and worked here for more than 20 years. The meditation garden is charming with a variety of little enclaves and multiple benches. It's a nice place to come meditate, read, or just get away and think (or not think). The visitor's center and main building are currently closed. I understand that there are some exhibits relating to Yogananda's life here. I don't know when they intend to reopen this area. I encountered a staff member who was very nice. They do have some rules about not sitting on the grass, FYI. There were plenty of benches though. Ample parking along the road once you enter their gated area. LA is a stressful city so having access to serene places like this is so valuable. Thank you to the SRF for granting that access to the public for free.

I also used to take yoga classes sometimes in Burbank with Jamie and she would incorporate sound healing into the class which was really nice. Jamie is a consummate professional. Always kind, always on time (hauling all that equipment back-and-forth!), very educational about the healing applications of sound. She does a good job of getting people set up properly to have a good experience. I believe that the purpose of a sound bath is to train your brain and psyche into a state of peaceful neutrality. Some people get a bit of a high from it. Either way, It's a beautiful experience to share with other people and I've witnessed a lot of people get positive benefits out of it. I haven't taken any sound healing training sessions with Jamie but having known her for over 14 years I'm sure that she makes them very informative and fun.

I had an absolutely lovely experience…read more I had a look at the reviews before going, and I'm not gonna lie, but all the comments about the owners being sticklers for punctuality had me a little worried. So, I arrived even earlier than the recommended 15 minutes. And what I came to find is a very intentional, organized operation. Plastic boxes are provided at check-in, for your shoes and belongings that you place into a cubby. The room is mindfully and beautifully designed, clean, and orderly. They don't pack in as many people as they can to get their money's worth. And there were mats, pillows, eye masks, and crystals set up for a total of 8 people. The two owners work as a team, and begin with a brief "what to expect" and Q&A session. Then, for the theta class, they warm you up with a little partners rainstick exercise standing up (nothing too awkward)... then everyone lays back and gets situated, takes some deep breaths, and is transported by a magical medley of drums, synth speakers, singing bowls and gongs. If you've ever had acupuncture and sort of been in that blissful in-between state of delicious sleep and slight wakefulness... that was my experience. While I understand that some might be peeved about the strict no latecomers policy, anyone who actually has experienced this sound bath would probably understand why they run such a tight ship. Besides, punctuality is a nice way to enter into this (and any) intentional journey. Also... grow up! :) Would happily do it again!

I came in with acute low back pain, pelvic misalignment, and other related issues. I threw my back out in early April and couldn't walk without agony. I sought out Michael's massages from the recommendation of my naturopathic doctor. And I'm so glad that I did. Michael has been such a patient and attentive healer in my journey towards getting to the source of this pain. And what's great is that he isn't possessive in his approach; instead, he is ever ready to recommend that I see certain specialists to assist in this healing journey. I really appreciate his openness because I've been piecing together this puzzle for years, and it is a breath of fresh air to work with a healer who isn't suspicious of other schools of thought or modalities but embraces the plurality of what a patient/client needs to get better. From Michael's work alone, I can now go several days without pain which is a huge improvement. Side bonus, I'm no longer cold. I've seen Michael twice a week for the past 2 months and he moved so much energy around that I'm not freezing anymore. I used to have cold hands and feet no matter what I did and just thought it was a quirky thing about me. But no. I was just super stagnate! No other massage therapist has been able to transform so much energy. He's unique and a beautiful soul. Vielen dank, Michael!

They offer good classes. However, don't expect much compassion…read more I used to go to the ODD in Silver Lake and have been going to the ODD in Eagle Rock semi regularly since I moved out here. I used ClassPass. We recently had a baby and it's been hard to get fit postpartum. I booked a pilates class, but unfortunately was rushing around just before (you know how it is when you have a window of opportunity to get things done with a very young baby!) Blame clumsiness, blame sleep deprivation- I fell down our stairs. Had to go to urgent care and got put in a boot and on crutches. Unfortunately it was within the no cancellation window for the class. So I concocted a plan - I'd send my mom, who was in town helping me with our baby, to take my class. She'd get a treat and a thank you for all she'd been doing for us, and they wouldn't have a gap in their class. They say the reason you can't cancel is it hurts their business to have a gap last minute, and that's fair, but if you send someone to take the class you paid for, I figured that would take care of them too. I was thinking if she liked it I'd get her a membership for the months she is here helping. Win win. NOT how it worked out. My mom came home very upset - the lady at the desk was mean to her even after she told our story and called me on the phone. The desk lady acted like we were trying to scam her. Ultimately they wouldn't let my mom take my class, so she paid full price for her own. They told her I'd cancel my ClassPass so I wouldn't get charged - well, I just got charged so that was a lie. The whole experience left a bad flavor in both our mouths. I know they didn't have to help, but they could have been nice. They talk a big game about compassion and good energy in classes, so I guess I was hoping for some of the same in a tough situation. Honestly, even after enjoying years of their classes, I don't think I'll go again. It's hard to relax and be in the right mindset in a place where they were mean to your mom because they could. So, yeah. They'll talk a lot about compassion in class, but they will stick it to you even if they're not getting hurt, if they have a way to. It's too bad bc I did enjoy their classes and they have good instructors. But in the end it's all just business. Update: in response to the owner's response below, I do not believe it, because other studios on ClassPass HAVE canceled without charging inside the cancellation window (most recently when my child was born unexpectedly three weeks early), and I sent my sister to take a different class after I got into a bicycle accident a few years ago and that studio didn't cause any trouble. So in addition to how they treated my mom, they're just not telling the truth here and I removed another star because of that. There's a way to do it and they chose not to. I understand not being casually flexible, but on rare occasions there are actual unpredictable emergencies, and in those cases, studios can claim "policy" to refuse or they can show compassion. This is the type of studio that claims to be a place of community but when you actually need community, they go corporate. It's fine if you know that's how they are; it's a nasty shock if you actually thought it was a community.
