Volunteering with the Chinese American WWII Veterans Project has been an eye opening and rewarding experience. I saw a Facebook post from the Hawaii Jaycee Senate. It was a call for help to identify WWII Veterans of Chinese American descent. I was curious because my sisters just enrolled our grandfather into the Recognition Project. I felt like if I helped, I would be finding Veterans who slipped though the cracks and didn't have grandchildren (like my sisters) to speak for them. I signed up! I first met E. Samantha Cheng (she was born in New York City) at Oahu Cemetery. Note: Samantha is in charge of the project and wrote the book, "Honor and Duty: The Chinese American WWII Veterans". We scoured the Columbarium of Oahu Cemetery and Nu'uanu Cemetery, then moved onto Diamond Head Cemetery for the next two days. History is not my best subject. I learned so much about the uniqueness of Hawaii and the Chinese Americans who served in World War II... It was a time before Hawaii became the 50th State (1959)! Hawaii was a Territory of the United States in 1941... So - why did these young men serve in all branches the military??? And... Since Hawaii was not a State yet... These young men were enrolled under Idaho's name! (Alphabetically, Idaho comes after Hawaii!) Wow!!! Anyway... The last two days of Samantha's 28-day data-collection project was held at Diamond Head Cemetery. I was paired with her - and our assignment was The Columbarium. It was well maintained with a working elevator, convenient restroom, and sink/floral scissors/trash can stations scattered throughout. It was nice to see people paying respects to their loved ones. Overall, this is a wonderful place to hold services for the dearly departed. I have been here in the past and have fond memories of family and friends who were laid to rest at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Thank you for this peaceful, beautiful, and meaningful Park!

"No One Lives Forever" Diamond Head Memorial Park is a truly peaceful final destination when it comes time to depart the earthly plane. A nice final resting place for the departed. The grounds are meticulously cared for and on any given day you will see workers maintaining the grounds and buildings to keep the park beautiful and serene. Many notable citizens are located here including Alfred Apaka whose final resting place is one of the more striking landmarks at Diamond Head. This is a small memorial park compared to the larger ones located in Kaneohe and central Oahu. But in some ways the smallness of Diamond Head leads to a more intimate experience and peacefulness. Currently there may not be any original buyer plots left (although plots can be acquired on the secondary market) so because of size constraints they went vertical and have been offering niches in multi-story structures located on the 22nd ave side of the park. Diamond Head Memorial Park is a worthy consideration for one's final resting place. Easy access, serene and well maintained.

    Happy Easter Mom!

I wrote this review back in 2016, and someone from the Diamond Head Memorial Park had sent me an email asking if I could move/repost my review here at the - Diamond Head Memorial Park site, as I had the review listed under Diamond Head Mortuary on Yelp. Here goes......... To the mom's out there...........Happy Mother's Day! :D ____________________________________________________ I come here all the time to visit my mom, grand parents, as well as friends.......... For those of you who have experienced profound loss of a loved one, it's nice to know that your loved one is resting peacefully at Diamond Head Memorial Park/Mortuary. This beautiful park is located near the base of Diamond Head, sandwiched between 18th & 22nd Avenue. You can enter & exit the park from either street, and there is lots of space to park your car. I love the way that Diamond Head Memorial park upkeep's the park, as the grass is always pretty green, & the lawn is well trimmed. They also have water faucets all over the park (so you don't have to walk far) should you need water to fill up your vase, and they also have trash bins all over the place............... one bin to recycle the greens, and the other bin for trash. Sometimes I buy red roses for my mom, and the stems are a bit too long for the vase. One great tip folks...........if you go by the mausoleum area (by the sink area), there are flower cutters where you can use to cut your flower stems. Love that they have a few basic amenities out for the public to use. Life is pretty mysterious........... I got into a deep discussion over lunch yesterday with my Yelp buddy - Daniel C., as I mentioned to him not too long ago I was going to about 7 to 10 weddings a year, every year for a span of 5 to 7 years............ Then the next thing you know, I find myself going to a lot of kids 1 year old birthday parties....... Now, I find myself going to my friend's kid high school graduation parties, or my friend's parents funeral........sigh.......... Such as the circle of life........ I mentioned to my friend..........when you come into this world, you come alone. When you leave this world, most times you will go alone too. It really doesn't matter how much toys or money you accumulate over your lifetime, as you cannot take it with you. Be grateful & happy for what you have. While we are here, hopefully we live our life with purpose, and that we impact someone (loved one & friends) in a positive way...........because one day when you're gone.............all they will have of you is the wonderful memories. Live life to the fullest, no regrets.......... I am lucky to have a lot of happy memories of my mom...........and I would like to share this post which I read today called - ("The Art of Remembrance" - by Joanne). Upon reading it, I felt it inspired me today.....so I would like to share it with you folks - Happy Mother's Day. The Art of Remembrance is a Zenspirations I created on Mother's Day, dedicated to everyone who can't celebrate with their Mom this year. When you lose someone you love, holidays can be painful; but being able to remember special times is a way to keep the legacy of love and treasured memories alive. Please take a moment today to share a special memory you have in your heart... and please share this piece with someone you know who has recently lost a loved one. Stay Zenspired, Joanne.

Nature's Beauty. I was told this is one of the easiest of all trails to climb. I was told about 25 min to an hour. Wear good socks and sneakers. Flip flops will not be a wise choice. I thought I wouldn't make it but I had many people cheering me on. It took me about an hour but I finally did it. There were a few places to sit and stop but also know at the end of the long trail there was a butt load of stairs to conquer just before you get to the top. It is all what you would expect it it be. Spectacular view is an under statement but can someone please put in a zip line from the top to my car please. They have a small gift shop, I wish they sold a shirt that said "I survived Diamond Head". Lol They have one food truck, a bathroom and a couple of water fountains but other that that is pure nature. Driving in you will go through the side of the volcano which is pretty epic and then you are on the inside of the crater. Prices here are very affordable even at the gift shop. I was surprised to find a Diamond Head chap stick for only.25cent. Lol

Went hiking at Diamond Head for the first time and it was an amazing experience. The hike up is about 30 to 45 minutes up depending on your pace. Coming down took me 30 minutes back down. The views on top was worth it and you see the whole city on top. Great experience in Oahu, Hawaii.

Who checks into a cemetery? I guess I do! Anyway, I stopped by to visit my grams for her birthday today. As usual, the landscape was nicely trimmed and clean. Once again, who takes notice of cemetary landscapes? You got it, I do!! Anyway, I had gone to place flowers into the holders on the grave, and it was practically stuck in the ground. Luckily, a groundskeeper noticed my struggle and came to save the day. She tried her best yet couldn't get that darn flower holder outta the ground. Off she went to travel far and wide to locate another worker where they both dashed quickly to my rescue and he basically popped that holder right outta the ground!! Whooo hoo my grandparents were probably laughing at me. Anyway, it was great that I had assistance and allowed my grandma to receive her lovely flowers celebrating her birthday!!

I'm not sure if they are having staffing issues but this is the first time in 20+ years that we have observed some problems. The grass has been cut halfway and the rest have weeds over the graves that are 2-3 ft tall. We dropped a pen and could find it in the high weeds. Also, ALL the water was shut off with NO explanation or warning. How do we put flowers I. A vase with no water. If we had known ahead of time we could bring our own buckets of water. Also, we probably walked to most of the outlets testing it for water. Put a sign or something to let people know. Very disappointed in the management of this place. BTW, the only water outlet we found was by the mausoleum area. It's important to know that those we love has a well cared for resting place.

I was impressed by the modern technology at the Diamond Head chapel that makes it convenient to display your videos and slide shows. Two large screen monitors are built in the chapel and one was in the lounge area where all share the same images. As an AV person, I can appreciate not having to setup a portable projection screen & projector on table and bring a separate sound system for it that is required at many other funeral venues. The wall monitors are easily visible in the ambient lighting compared to a projector and screen. The audio from the video/slide show were conveniently fed into the house sound system. The podium microphone was a high quality Shure gooseneck condenser microphone so it sounded very clear and the thin gooseneck was unobtrusive. Wyatt, who was the onsite funeral director, was professional, quick, attentive, talented and caring in all aspects of his services. He's not one to stand around doing nothing and has a keen sense of attention to detail as evidenced by him picking up trash to make everything perfect. He surprised us by playing the trumpet during the burial ceremony. Many professional musicians who happened to be in attendance commented on his skillful playing. Turns out he's an accomplished trumpet player as well as an instructor. I would recommend Diamond Head Mortuary and Wyatt as your funeral director.

There was a lack of communication, both internally and with me. They called the day after her death to ask for information they already had. I had gone in prior to her death to give them all that information. The woman who called hadn't bothered looking for the form before she called. I posted an unflattering review yesterday out of frustration after being told everyone was gone for the weekend and there was no way to find out my mother's status until Monday, three days away. I had been told she would be cremated yesterday. But no phone call, no communication at all. It has been difficult to reach anyone. I had to call several times to find out they were waiting for a signature from the hospice doctor. If I had known that's what they were waiting for, I would have called hospice sooner. Miki Ho called me this morning and addressed my concerns in a very compassionate way. Hopefully my mother will be cremated Monday, thirteen days after she was taken to the mortuary. Hopefully he will address the issues that are leading to me spending another weekend with my mother still in the freezer at the mortuary.

Beginning our time there at the temple felt like the most peaceful and grounding way to start. From the moment we walked in, everything slowed down. The temple is a stunning replica of the historic Byōdō-in in Japan, and it's absolutely breathtaking in person. The large Buddha statue inside is gigantic and awe-inspiring. We bought a small bag of food and scattered pellets into the different ponds where bright koi fish gathered in clusters, Turtles, Peacocks, wild cats rested in shaded corners, and the birds (so accustomed to visitors) ate directly out of our hands. We lit incense together and took a few quiet moments to reflect on the family members we were there to honor. Ringing the sacred bell before entering felt symbolic , like setting an intention for remembrance and gratitude. Parking is a nightmare and there is a small fee. In May, Bonnie told us they had discovered the order had never been submitted and promised it would be completed within a couple of months. It still wasn't done. Meanwhile, my father, who passed away in January, already has his headstone installed.
