My wonderful Auntie Kay passed away on August 13th, 2018 so we contacted Hosoi Garden Mortuary to handle final disposition. They provided an itemized bill of everything from $260 for transportation and $75 for Refrigeration to $500 for cremation and even a $75 cardboard box. We did not use any of the mortuaries facilities such as viewing rooms or dining areas but there was still a $1,185 charge itemized as Professional Services. Sure they have to make a profit like any other business but it sure seems a little steep for what basically seems like just coordinating everything. I know money isn't really a factor when dealing with the final disposition of a loved one especially when there's a time crunch because she passed suddenly but if you have time, I would do a little shopping.

Leaving this earth is such an awkward situation. On one hand, it's good to get away from physical pain and suffering. However, we, the survivors, miss our loved one who has moved on to the next life. .. I've been to Hosoi more times than I'd like. My cousin, a former Police Detective, had his service here at Hosoi and the line of people wrapped around the building. ..they couldn't even get to the program because the family kept continuously greeting the visitors. Kyle was well loved. .. Most times, the celebration of life has been for my friends' parents. However, last night's memorial was for my friend, Michael. We were the same age, but went to different high schools. The thing we had in common was our membership in the Rising Phoenix Jaycees and the Hawaii Jaycees... developing community leaders through volunteering. Those were fun years. .. Anyway, the service went well because of the pleasant environment: air conditioning, convenient restrooms, functional sound system, good lighting, spacious dining area, and new free parking structure! When it got crowded, the partition was opened and more seating was available. Thanks to Hosoi for providing the tables, chairs, envelopes, and pens at the reception area. The parking attendant and refreshment staff were helpful and polite. I'm sure that other services were included to help the families of our loved ones prepare for these celebrations. Mahalo for all that you do!

I had told Ballard, that I would be taking care of my stepfather's arrangements and any payments. I told them to not contact my mother because she was grieving so the least I could do is take this off her mind. Mom was also stepfather's caretaker and was there with him when he passed. So she wasn't exactly in a state to deal with funeral arrangements. They ended up calling my mother and asking for payment when it wasn't near the agreed upon dates. I felt that this was very insensitive. Another thing was that I had payed with cash and sent my boyfriend to drop it off. While he was there they counted the money wrong, had to recount, counted the money wrong again, and had 2 people double check the amount of cash. Now, I understand that everyone has those days, but after I specifically told them not to bother my mother... I couldn't help not to be irritated. But overall, the cremation was seamless and end product was satisfactory.

He went above and beyond to make sure dad was taken care of while planning his final destination at Punchbowl Cemetary. I felt so much weight lifted in interim while Raymond took care of literally all the arrangements from the beginning of the cremation to the beautiful burial. Oahu Cemetary assisted me through each step of the process in this difficult time. Being that it is an emotional process our coordinator Sherie worked very hard to help in the process as we faced a simple but troubling issue. Despite this Sherie kept in touch and through this we were able to complete the process and retrieve his remains. The urn that I purchased from them was a beautiful Hawaiian Koa box that now holds the remains of both my Mom and Dad together. My Mom passed away back in 2020 during the lockdown and we were unable to do anything for her but handle her cremation. Now with the passing of my Dad, he and my Mom can be together as they were before 2020. They were married for 43 years and finally together again not just in heaven but as their remains sit together in this beautiful urn that was also beautifully engraved. Mahalo Sherie and Oahu Cemetary for helping in closing this final chapter in our family.

After speaking to Nani, I knew I didn't need to call anyone else. She was extraordinarily kind, compassionate and clearly explained answers to all of my questions. I wasn't even sure what I needed, but she guided me through and arranged for pickup for my dad. The pickup team was kind and very understanding, as we were waiting for another family member to arrive and they gave us extra time. Nani kept in contact with me, and was available by phone for any questions and directions to their facility for his viewing. The team at the facility were so gracious and welcoming. The female staff member was so kind and supportive to my mom and I, and made our last moments with my dad, so very special. Nani continued to keep me updated on the process for cremation, as there was a hold up, due to the medical examiner needing to sign off on dad's paperwork. Her attention to detail and superior customer service made the horrible experience of losing my dad, into one that brought my family peace of mind. I cannot express how deeply I appreciated everything Nani and her team did to make this experience a positive one. My sister and I sat in for a 3 hour meeting with Shelby Newby-Jasper, Family Care Specialist, trying to plan my mother's funeral in August. She gave us the pricing but only referred to the packages, essentially only giving us 3 options. It felt like we were being strong armed into a package. During that meeting I already established it was out of our price range. She started only acknowledging my very emotional sister despite the fact I was the one making payment. She then rushed us out of the appointment. After that she only communicated with us via email copy pasting over and over the prices for the most expensive package and saying she cannot hold anything until the contract was signed and no further changes or additions/adjustments can be made after this. We tried asking if there was a way we could speak to her about other pricing options due to financial difficulty. And only referred us to the customer care loan QR at the bottom of the email. After she started screening our call through the receptionist and would only respond by email. I tried letting the receptionist know that I've been trying for a week to get in touch with this lady trying to ask about other options. After 3 weeks her boss, Merci Soriano Sales Manager, responded back and said that we have a week to make a decision or be charged the daily sheltering fee but we couldn't get a hold of her by phone and we were calling for three weeks. By the end of the month we had a email string that lasted 20 emails back and forth trying to get our mom out of there. We we're not able to get in touch with the person handling her sale and they would not refer us to another salesman after we asked for a transfer because of because we were not able to get a hold of her either by email or by phone and left many many messages at the desk she screened all our phone calls. We checked with the state heath office. Even after 3 weeks, Borthwick did not file the proper paperwork with the state so we were unable to get the death certificate to file with the banks to try to pay for her funeral that way. After asking around for advice we finally found a way to get our mom out of there and to another mortuary. In order to switch mortuaries, we had to pay almost $1k out-of-pocket, even though they did not embalm they did not do anything and but hold the body and gave difficult service. Because they did not pick up the phone we were not able to bury my mom during the month. Her body did not have any embalming so it looked super bad. Her skin was already black and tearing at her shoulders by the time we were able to her to the other Mortuary, and she was unrecognizable. After we moved it to Aloha Mortuary, we were able to plan her funeral in 5 days, have the funeral in week, for a 3rd of the package price with similar arrangements. Due to Shelby's negligence I was unable to mourn my mother properly. I felt like she cared more about the sale than burying my mother with dignity.

The earlier the better. The reason being is that the parking is tandem or stacked, meaning that the parking attendants will direct you to park in a specific lane/row of cars, and you won't be able to leave until the car in front of you moves. There are individual parking stalls in the same lot situated against another building, OR if you are not staying for the entire program, the parking lane that is furthest from the driveway is designated for those who want to leave early. On the evening that I attended the wake, the attendants did ask if we were staying for the entire service or leaving early, in which case we were directed to park in that aforementioned far lane. Secondly, another reason to arrive early is not just for the parking, but for seating purposes as well. To make sure you have a seat for the service (should you choose to stay), arrive as early as possible. 2) Bring a jacket. The hall where services take place is slightly cold, so it might be best to bring a jacket, sweater, or wear something with long-sleeves if you think that you may get cold easily (like me). 3) Additional parking is available in another lot directly across the street. I'm not sure if this lot belongs specifically to the mortuary or if they have an arrangement with another business, but a validation is required (provided by the mortuary) upon exiting this secondary parking lot. 4) The dining/eating area directly next to the service hall has limited seating fyi.
