Located downtown close to Vineyard St on Nuuanu Ave, my parents purchased funeral plans and mom passed in 2011. Hosoi did a wonderful job making sure everything was as she wished and easy to work with, absolutely organized, efficient, and very sympathetic. Dad passed a couple months ago and we were lucky to work with Ricki, who was so wonderful because there was an additional step to Dad's plan as he was a retired Air Force Lt Col so his final wish was to be interred at Punchbowl with full military honors. Ricki kindly helped with all of the plans, setting the date with Punchbowl and working with USAF to ensure dad received his honors. Ricki's been doing this a while so he has it down-pat and makes good suggestions, answers all our questions patiently, and just made us feel like family. Like he treated us how he would treat his own during this overwhelming time. He answered all our emails promptly and even called when he needed to discuss a more sensitive matter. During the grieving time your mind doesn't work as it should- or at least mine doesn't - it was a comfort to work with Ricki and the rest of the kind ladies in the office who remained professional but caring with each interaction we had. We recently attended a relative's service here on 10-10-24. Things haven't changed much since I held my father's service here in 2006. For both services, the deceased had funeral plans with Hosoi making it a lot easier. This company had been in business for so long that it is reputable, organized and the program runs smoothly. Personally I'm glad it was in English without the senko(incense)offering. They set up a table for friends and family to sign in and give their koden(money envelopes) to the family. There are ample benched seating for the guests during the service both in and out.. Inside is nice, comfortable and air conditioned. Podium and microphone are present. You can show a video on the screen as part of your program. You can select your clergy person along with who does the eulogy or remembrances of your dearly departed. After the service it's customary to provide refreshments or a meal to your guests in their outside dining hall. The one we just attended got their deluxe bentos from Natsunoya and 3 kinds of mochi, manju from Kansai Yamato for dessert. Beverages are also provided. Purchased a funeral plan for my father who was in an assisted living facility. Hosoi was recommended to me and they did an outstanding job to the end. I highly recommend you give them a call if you're shopping for a funeral plan. Quality: They provided sufficient information to make a customized choice for a simple plan. Value: Good value for the packages offered. Comparable to a Mililani Mortuary combo package. Honesty it's a personal preference; I chose Hosoi, since my parents and grandparents did. Whereas my cousin chose Mililani Mortuary, since his Mom was taken care of by Mililani. When the time came to put the plan to use, Courtney and other staff at Hosoi, were extremely helpful and empathetic to our situation. Buyer beware, Hosoi boast about being in business since the 1900. They brag about care and compassion. Great! Well I purchased a funeral plan several years ago with a payment plan. Fast forward i noticed the deductions bring made directly out of my account. But I have no idea of the balance...why, hosoi doesn't send out any type of account balance or update on the account. So I called...left a message no call back. I call again same person answers and takes another message. Feels like Hosoi is dodging my calls. Next ill be forced to go in person to get a straight answer. Im really hoping I dont need to escalate things. Just check out the reviews of Hosoi you will see the pattern. Noticed that management doesn't respond to any feedback..why? Feels like they dont care. What a difficult journey... It's never easy when you need to make the designs of your loved ones but with the staff here at Hosoi Garden Mortuary getting it done is something that is much needed as the process is quite a process. I've been here too many times than I'd like but how they've grown to a parking structure in the back where the front used to be the only place is a nice step forward as paying respects already is difficult. They do have plans as my family have done which is the best and smart thing to do as it can get costly but the process is quite impressive and easy but on this visit is different as it came up suddenly and I haven't been here since before covid so the process now has not only takes much longer as the appointment we made was over two weeks before we can even make any plans was not so surprising but something we now must deal with. Making the appointment the staff was wonderful and explained it all with us to make sure we have the proper documents and what to look forward to but they took care of all the paperwork...all we had to do is decide. My wonderful Auntie Kay passed away on August 13th, 2018 so we contacted Hosoi Garden Mortuary to handle final disposition. They provided an itemized bill of everything from $260 for transportation and $75 for Refrigeration to $500 for cremation and even a $75 cardboard box. We did not use any of the mortuaries facilities such as viewing rooms or dining areas but there was still a $1,185 charge itemized as Professional Services. Sure they have to make a profit like any other business but it sure seems a little steep for what basically seems like just coordinating everything. I know money isn't really a factor when dealing with the final disposition of a loved one especially when there's a time crunch because she passed suddenly but if you have time, I would do a little shopping. read more

Avoid this place at all costs. The service is poor - never returned phone calls. They said they had a backlog of 5-6 weeks to cremate my mother. That is NOT ok. With a backlog like that, they should have suggested another place out of respect for the deceased. They are also expensive relative to other places and will nickel and dime you for added services and extra charges will appear without notifying you - taking advantaged of grieving people. Leaving this earth is such an awkward situation. On one hand, it's good to get away from physical pain and suffering. However, we, the survivors, miss our loved one who has moved on to the next life. .. I've been to Hosoi more times than I'd like. My cousin, a former Police Detective, had his service here at Hosoi and the line of people wrapped around the building. ..they couldn't even get to the program because the family kept continuously greeting the visitors. Kyle was well loved. .. Most times, the celebration of life has been for my friends' parents. However, last night's memorial was for my friend, Michael. We were the same age, but went to different high schools. The thing we had in common was our membership in the Rising Phoenix Jaycees and the Hawaii Jaycees... developing community leaders through volunteering. Those were fun years. .. Anyway, the service went well because of the pleasant environment: air conditioning, convenient restrooms, functional sound system, good lighting, spacious dining area, and new free parking structure! When it got crowded, the partition was opened and more seating was available. Thanks to Hosoi for providing the tables, chairs, envelopes, and pens at the reception area. The parking attendant and refreshment staff were helpful and polite. I'm sure that other services were included to help the families of our loved ones prepare for these celebrations. With the several mortuary establishments in the area, Hosoi offers the most affordable rates, hands down! Its a subject no family is comfortable speaking about, however, its wiser and cheaper to plan and make arraignments BEFORE death rather then after. It could be a $5K difference of a decision if you decide to wait to get services. I went in with my hubby and brother-n-law to inquire rates for basic funeral needs. The price was so good, we got a plan that day and will be back in a week to purchase another plan. We also took a tour of their coffins and that was nice to see how our loved ones will buried when that time comes. Ask for Annette, she was so helpful and got us everything we needed. read more

Unfortunately in this lifetime the two things that are guaranteed is death and taxes. I like to hope that I will die right before the end of the year so I don't have to pay any taxes. The IRS can try to collect from me 6' under. Regarding this establishment, it is like a well oiled machine as that is well what they do. Just as there are many babies being born, there is always someone passing away. They have been in the death business for a long time and they can advise you in every aspect you can think of. It's super old.. but thats what I love about this place. They get immediate street cred points that they didn't succumb to changing things. Everything is exactly the way I remembered it. Even the reception area in the back is the same. The people working there are super nice, and I've been going to this place for over 30 years. It is super busy so getting an appt on a weekend is almost impossible. They were very accomodating to my family thus far and am thankful for that. My 93- year father passed away in early June. He was a good planner and had purchased a cremation plan years ago; he was helpful even after death since we did not have to second guess what he wanted in terms of funeral services. His planning saved us a lot of grief and stress, which, as anyone who has lost a loved one knows, is already overwhelming. What did cause us stress was the attitude of the employees. There were three big offenses: we felt as if the funeral director assigned to us was trying to sell us more than the plan covered. On three different occasions he urged us to reserve a date for a memorial service there. "People are reserving for September and October already", he'd say. We said "No, thank you" three times (the place is dingy and not to our liking) but he didn't heed us. Second, my 91-year old mother uses a walker and therefore cannot use stairs. When we arrived at our 1 pm appointment to pick up the urn containing his ashes, I asked the female worker who greeted us to open the sliding glass door at the top of the handicapped ramp for my Mom. She immediately said she couldn't. Maybe the employee was having a bad day or was reluctant to walk the 20 feet or so from her office to open the door. Regardless, I felt that was inexcusable and a possible Americans with Disabilities Act violation. (She eventually did open the door and my Mom cried and cried when she saw Dad again.) Third, although I had completed their numerous forms and indicated on one that we wanted the free obituary because we'd write a longer one just prior to the memorial service, the funeral director overlooked that and it took a reminder call from me on July 15th to send it to the Star Advertiser for publication. I would NOT RECOMMEND this mortuary. read more

My dad had passed away at a private care home this year on February and had his remains picked up by Hosoi mortuary that evening. After some discussion about funeral planning with family members, we've decided on transferring my dad's remains to Borthwick mortuary and have the funeral service there instead. But, to our horror and lack of communication on their part, they had already embalmed my dad's body without our authorization. When I called and emailed to them about refunding the embalming fee but no one has yet responded to me. My family handled most of the funeral services with the funeral director for my grandma, but overall my second hand experience was nothing short of great. I was in Hawaii visiting when my grandma fell ill, shortly after I arrived she passed away... I was only in the area for a week and Hosoi managed to arrange and coordinate everything by the end of the week. Just a suggestion but I don't know if it was already suggested on other yelp reviews, Hosoi administration needs to fix the speakers surrounding the funeral service area. People pay a lot of money for funeral services for their loved ones. The least Hosoi administration can do is provide quality in their microphones and speakers. Funeral services I have attended here are run efficiently; however, the funeral director who handled my mom's arrangements didn't acknowledge my loss with sympathy or compassion, but went straight to business details. Hosoi claimed to have faxed in my brother's obituary information last week. Two days before the service, nothing has been posted in the Star Advertiser. Star Advertiser claims they received nothing. We planned to receive 300 people, with a posted obituary. Now we have to rely on phone calls to let friends and family members know about the service. How sad. read more

My son recently passed. Hosoi did the embalming and provided the casket. We purchased a plot at diamond head. We had a very small service at hosoi with a minister provided. During the plot purchasing process diamond head made it clear that they had only 3 people to get the casket from the hearse to the gurney at the gravesite. I kept telling hosoi that we needed 3 more strong people. I mentioned this several times to hosoi and they kept telling me not to worry and they would take care of it. A tiny elderly lady was the driver of the hearse. She was the only one from hosoi. The minister who did the gravesite services and myself had to struggle with helping unloading the casket. I was the only male in our party and am elderly with a bad back. Other than this breakdown in service, hosoi was okay with the other services provided. read more
