We really like Diamond Shoals and the last visit did not change that fact. Service has always been really good once you get seated. Large parties are not as well accommodated but not horrible. For the 3 of us, it's always been great. Look at their fish of the day...they are always fresh (except for salmon, but ordering salmon in the obx in the summer is like ordering crab in montana in december--not going to be the best. Some of the local fish like golden tile and strawberry grouper are real treats and wahoo and cobia are delicious. Even the lesser spanish mackerel gets well treated here. I always get the local bay scallops when they are available and they are ALWAYS delicious. Sushi apps have been really good lately, and the clam chowder is very good. Not sure why someone would complain that everything is fried...far from the truth, although the broiled/fried options are significant. (also, not to anyone: NC/OBX style clam chowder is made with bacon...and is delicious) Their green beans are really good (almost greek style) and i love the hush puppies. They also serve a decent breakfast and you can get a really good burger. Prices are about right for the area. All in all, it's one of the best choices in the area. If you are looking for Michelin stars, you need to lighten up and catch some waves at lighthouse beach and get yourself good and hungry and remember why you drove all that way out to the end of a barrier island: sun, sand, waves, and water...and nice piece of fish. My daughter and I ended up here as it was right down the road from our hotel and we could walk there. My daughter had the spaghetti and marinara from the kids menu and I ordered the fried shrimp. My daughter really wanted the salad bar, so I paid extra for that. I also paid a little extra to substitute the salad bar for my 2 sides. I thought that it was a little expensive. I wish there was a kid price for the salad bar. That being said, the produce on the salad bar was really fresh, and while it wasn't huge, what was on it was high quality. I'll always take quality over quantity . My fried shrimp was excellent. The last two times I've gotten shrink at a restaurant, is been inedible (both times not deveined. Ick). This shrimp was very well prepared, lightly breaded, and perfectly fried. My daughter ate every bite of her spaghetti. Service was friendly and efficient. The hush puppies were good. This place is a must visit for fresh seafood and sushi. It was a half hour from our condo, but well worth every minute. The crab legs were fresh and perfectly cooked and the sushi was unique and delicious! The Tiger Roll and the Watermelon Roll definitely need to be savored! read more

Okay folks, this is Buxton. It's not like we are in a culinary hot spot here. When we visit (which our family has been coming to buxton for almost 40 years) we look for good quality food, prepared well and paired with solid, family-restaurant style service. You get that all at Diamond Shoals. The fresh seafood is always top notch (they have a fish market attached) though I've never had anything other than seafood as an entree, but hey - when in Rome... I always go for the green beans as a side, they're fresh and well prepared and not swimming in butter or cooked to death. Coleslaw is also really good (not gloppy) and seems like it's made there. For those complaining that the sides are too starchy, what do you expect? They're feeding hardworking fishermen, surfers and kite boarders. We need our carbs after a day out on the beach! They have been steadily improving the food for years. Keep up he good work! read more

If you go here, prepare for your tastebuds to be mesmerized. I went over a week ago on vacation and I'm still thinking about it. Nice, family oriented atmosphere, bangin' seafood. I got the crab stuffed mushrooms and shark bites and they were fantabulous. Cool feature for vacationers: They have a Carolina micro brew taste board with four assorted local beers. We thought the menu was a tad on the pricy side, especially for a family, BUT the food and salad bar were amazing. They don't skimp on portion sizes either.....we had a ton leftover. The staff is very friendly as well and even though I don't eat sushi, my husband does and it was a wonderful experience to see the chefs working with it. The atmosphere is casual but nice, so you don't have to worry about any snobbery, we and most of the other diners wore nice, but comfortable clothin or jeans.. This restaurant is one of two that we will visit on each trip to the Outer Banks. They are a busy place, and rightfully so, so you may have to wait a bit on things such as refills. The waitresses are so friendly though, you can't be mad about it. They work very hard, so the wait is not because of laziness or any other nonsense. But, I do not buy that as an excuse for poorly prepared food and poor service. Lastly, you should equally discuss with your servers how to handle a crowd so that they do not appear harried in front of customers. Very good food. Fun atmosphere. Great service. This is a popular place, so there may be a wait. Also check hours, since it does close between lunch and dinner. Good sushi? On the Outer Banks? Yes. I am totally not lying. Seriously, the sushi is good, the details are right. More importanty, they have special rolls that showcase local ingredients such as fried oysters. Which is exactly what I would expect from a sushi place in OBX. First impressions from the parking lot is your typical OBX fried fish joint and you expect to be overwhelmed by the smell of fry oil when you come in the door, but to the contrary it a wonderful gem serving local fresh seafood at a wonderful sushi bar. Seated at the sushi bar and talking with the sushi chefs, John and Ryan, you can gauge and feel their passion for their craft. I started with the Tuna Poke. A pleasant fish salad flavored with sesame oil, soy, and green onions served with fried tortilla. Next were the sushi rolls: Flounder roll, tiger roll, la bamba roll, and house special roll. All were of great quality and balance of flavors. Especially the la bamba roll, usually I shy away from sushi rolls containing cream cheese, because I find them to be overloaded and over powered by the cloying fat of the cream cheese. Not so delightfully proportioned with a great chili sauce. Finally dessert was good, Key Lime Pie. I prefer a tarter bite and sans meringue, but it was good finish with coffee. Diamond Shoals earns 5 stars without hesitation. I've eaten here for breakfast (a must before a solid surf session) and for dinner; both times of day have been wonderful experiences. The food is great - nothing bad to say about it. Try the Hatteras Clam Chowder - delicious. The breakfast bar for Sunday brunch is amazing too. Service is wonderful - they're friendly, helpful, and patient. What else could you want from your server? Plus they open early for those fishermen and surfers among us; that's certainly appealing. I've been spending my summers in Buxton since 1990, and I've been visiting Diamond Shoals for years (My grandparents used to love it for a good meal and drinks). With that in mind, I went there for dinner last night and was not thrilled with my experience. The prices are pretty high for what they offer, and most of the menu is fried food... Even my "steamed shrimp" were coated in butter and sugar. Also, although my waitress was fine, she was clearly handling too many tasks at once (we were seated by the sushi bar), and she forgot about us for most of the time we were there. It wasn't necessarily bad food, but the overall experience wasn't what I'd expected from the establishment. read more

Came for the sushi. Was not disappointed. It might not be the most authentic sushi in the world but this is the Outer Banks, not Japan. The sushi was fresh and ever-so tasty. The spicy tuna roll especially hit the spot. I believe we ordered three rolls for two of us. Left satisfied. Because of the sushi option, my gluten-free boyfriend had no problem at all eating here. Do not order the frozen margaritas. Huge disappointment. When I ordered, I was a little afraid it would be one of those margaritas that comes out of the machine... After receiving it, I suddenly wished it was a machine margarita. Because at least those are tasty. read more

We came down to Buxton on a whim for a quick overnight trip. We were searching for a good place to eat, so of course we consulted Yelp. The reviews for Diamond Shoals led us right to the doorstep. We had about a 10 minute wait for a table, not too shabby and during the peak season, dining anywhere on the Obx mandates a wait. They were fairly busy, so it took the waitress a few minutes to come take our drink orders - again, no biggie. Our drinks arrived and we ordered our food. The food came out very quickly. But this is where our visit went quickly downhill. For one, my husband opted for a salad as a side and was never told when he could go to the salad bar. By the time he went to get his salad, on his own, no sooner than he sat down, our meal was out. Our waitress brought our food and then disappeared. We sat for a good 10 minutes, all of us needing refills on our drinks, my husband waiting for his requested cocktail sauce for his meal and my 4 year old waiting for the BBQ sauce he requested when he ordered his chicken tenders. By the time we got the sauces, their food was cold. The only reason we got what we needed was because my husband had to get the attention of another waitress and asked her for what we needed. A very disappointing experience, especially when you are paying a pretty penny. The only highlight of our meal was the sushi, which was amazing. Otherwise, the food was sub-par at best. As far as service goes, I don't ask for a lot - but it isn't asking too much for wait staff to check on customers and make sure they have what they need to enjoy their meal (keeping drinks refilled included). read more

Been eating here for years when in the area for vacation. After walking out of the Oceana Bistro in Avon because noone EVER bothered to seat us, get menus, water or even wait on us after we'd made a decision on the menu we picked up ourselves, I made the executive decision to drive a bit further down to Buxton and eat at Diamond Shoals. My inlaws were very happy--I had the shrimp basket and they had the grouper--onion rings on the side. As always, the fish was fresh, breaded perfectly and fried so well you didn't feel like you were commiting mortal sin by eating it. The service was friendly and informative, just like always. Agree with the other reviewer - this is in Buxton, not NYC folks - might not look like the fanciest place but the food and service more than make up for it. We were four adults and four kids and the meals came out well paced and our waitress was fun and chatty giving us some locals only tips of places to go. I don't understand the reviewer complaining they "had" to go there because another place ran out of fish, instead of complaining about that, shouldn't we all be grateful for being in OBX and getting fresh fish caught that same day? First went here in 1993, and have been here almost every time I've been to the Outer Banks. On my most recent visits on the weekend of June 27-29, 2014, I didn't meet a single employee, from the servers to the cashiers to the manager herself, who wasn't cheerful and seemed genuinely happy to be there. When a friend and I went for dinner, it seemed to take a while for the food that we ordered to come out. However, the food was quite good. We have been coming here for 20 years or more: When we are in the Outer Banks, it is imperative that we have at least one breakfast at this place! It is a typical "Beach Diner" sort of Roadhouse. They serve Denny's style breakfasts in the AM, and fried fish/seafood sort of stuff in the evening. Yes, there are seldom many "green veggies" on the menu. They do count potatoes, cole slaw, and such as "greens". Sassy waitresses, seafaring decor, coffee shop atmosphere..... cocktails, placemats with nautical charts of the diamond shoals, fish nets, embalmed swordfish on the wall. It is a must for us to eat here every trip to OBX, even though it is really nothing all that special-- it is special because it has been there for so long and is such an integral part of being in Buxton and Hatteras Island. We don't feel like we've "arrived" in OBX until we have at least one meal here. Hurray for fried shrimp, coleslaw, greasy eggs, biscuits! read more

I've been coming to Hatteras Village for about 8 years now and hadn't tried this place until a few weeks ago. It seems to do a nice business (mostly locals). I don't have anything really good or bad to say about it. It is a typical beach, diner style, restaurant with the usual fare. My wife had a Spicy Tuna Salad Wrap and I chose the Tropical Fish Wrap w/ mango salsa. They were good, not great. I would go back because the server was friendly and there was nothing negative about the place. It is a good location to watch the locals and get a feel for their approach to life. I have always enjoyed the residents of the Buxton/Hatteras area. They are a friendly, good, "salt of the Earth" group and have never made me feel unwelcome. There is an extensive, fresh catch menu that I didn't try. If it is anything like the other fresh catch meals on the island, then it is probably worth 4 stars. read more

Delicious! The service was fantastic from the moment I walked through the door. The hostess was friendly and asked if we wanted to wait for them to clean off a booth from a party that was leaving or if we wanted a table. Once we sat, our server, Isabella, was just as friendly and made some excellent suggestions about what to order and how to have it cooked. I love that they start you off with a basket of hush puppies. They were a little dry, but that seems to be the trend in OBX. I ordered the bay scallops sauteed in butter and white wine. They were delicious! Everything on my plate was excellent. The only problem was it was a huge portion! When I sent some back, Isabella immediately asked if everything was OK! As tempted as I was to try something from their dessert menu, I decided not to. Next time I probably won't make the same decision.. haha. The prices were reasonable too. I will be back! read more

Always fresh fish cooked to order. We suggest blackened anything. And the teriyaki rice is deeelicious! Baked potatoes are a little dry but that's what toppings are for. The tuna was pretty good but we think the grouper and mahi mahi is better. That's all individual though. They have an all you can eat salad bar. Sushi every day except Sunday (or was it Monday? Lol). Wow! This was great. They claim to have the best chowder around. We tried their clam chowder and it was outstanding! My wife and I both got the fried shrimp baskets. They were great! There were plenty of shrimp and we had a hard time eating all the food in the baskets. The slaw was great and so were the hushpuppies. In fact, you could actually see corn in the hushpuppies. Had breakfast here today, within walking distance of our hotel. Pros: the food was good breakfast food. How hard is it to do breakfast? I had the bacon eggs and cheese on a biscuit and wow the biscuit was amazing. Definitely not a MCD BE&C biscuit! BF had corned beef hash and it was really good. Loved their hashbrowns, cooked perfectly and with onion so great flavor and fried perfectly so they were the perfect mix of crunchy outside, great flavor and perfectly cooked warm potato inside. Cons: While it's definitely shore style decor, they could definitely use a face-lift. Busy little restaurant (I'd call it a diner if we were in Philly) with friendly attentive staff and good food. Would eat here again. To answer your question (below) we stayed one night at the Hatteras inn as we were making our way from Morehead City up to kitty hawk and my BF uses yelp to find all the places we eat.
