This is my first trip to the Outer Banks, and this restaurant was recommended to me by friends. For a group of 10 people it approximately took an hour to get our food, but other than that the service was great. The staff was very friendly, and my drink was always filled. Two years later and things keep getting better. The expanded sushi bar is great and the selections are amazing. All the traditional favorites are still tops too, I love the fried flounder and shrimp. I also try to get breakfast at least one early morning too, their coffee is great. I don't know what the flavor is but it has a pleasant aftertaste that is addictive. Ate there twice for dinner in less than a week. The mahi dinner was AH-mazing! Tender and fresh. The chowder rivals Boston...really good Also had shrimp and clams which were awesome. Simple decor but who cares..was there for terrific seafood and boy did they deliver. Loved our waiter..same guy twice. Beer was ice cold and refreshing and food was delicious. I placed a pick-up order for myself and fiancé that included shrimp, crab cakes, fries, and mashed potatoes. When I picked up the order, I was charged a dollar a piece for a 2 cups of ice with no water. When I returned home with my food, I discovered that the restaurant had not included plastic cutlery or napkins, and, being on vacation, had return to the restaurant simply to be able to eat the (overpriced for the OBX) food I paid for. Great family restaurant and a great spot for seafood. We just had their Sunday dinner special (on Easter no less), and although very busy, the service was courteous and smooth. We've eaten here a number of times over the years for all three meals and never been disappointed. It's beach casual in dress and style, so don't expect NY standards, but the food is good, the staff is nice and you won't go hungry! read more

We visited Diamond Shoals for the first time last night. We were very happy with the atmosphere, service, and the food! I had the broiled flounder, and it is the best I have ever had. It was cooked nice and moist how I like it. My husband had the stuffed grouper, and our daughter the fried flounder. The fish bites appetizer were also very good. Please do yourself a favor and check out Diamond Shoals Restaurant in Buxton. You will not be disappointed. They also have sushi on their menu, if you like sushi. Changing my rating....compared to all the other restaurants down here this one is 5 stars...you can substitute for the seafood platers other places down here will not let you....like if I don't like oysters I can have extra shrimp and no oysters......the grouper melts in your mouth....the captions plater and the mates plater are good.... read more

Breakfast: definitely recommend. I love breakfast food and this one is good (eggs, sausage, biscuits, hash browns) and the coffee is delicious. Breakfast menu is very well priced. Dinner: give it a try. My sister got the highly recommended sushi but she felt like it was good but not great. It also took an incredibly long time to bring out to the table. The rest of us got seafood: broiled shrimp and scallops, crab cakes, the seafood platter. Very good, but not exceptional. I would suggest that you give it a shot, but we think there are other options on the island for better seafood. This is also coming from someone who has lived on the island and returned to visit several times. Covid: several recent reviews are berating employees for not wearing masks or enforcing guidelines. As of this writing (and eating here twice in one day), all servers are wearing masks. Please understand: this restaurant is SMALL. If you're even a little bit concerned about keeping a distance of six feet, just don't come. read more

I may be crazy, but it seems like Diamond Shoals has gotten better over the last few years. My last two meals (lunch and dinner) were in the off-season, but the meals were excellent. I've sampled the crabcake, scallops, shrimp and clam strips. Each was amazing. Best hush puppies on the island; you'd think they'd be easy to do but I've had more than a few sub-par hush puppies elsewhere. Green beans were fresh, not the Sysco canned mush that seems to be popular everywhere. And to top it off, great service. I'll be back! read more

My family and I had breakfast at Diamond Shoals the morning we were leaving the Outer Banks for home. I wish we had tried it sooner because the food was very good. I had a seafood omelet that was really delicious. We had 7 in our party and everyone agreed we should have tried the place sooner in our vacation. Would have given 4 stars, but the extreme amount of time we had to wait to be seated while the hostess checked out other customers was extreme. It wasn't until we started to shuffle and whisper about going somewhere else that the hostess magically "noticed" us and paused what she was doing to seat is. Once we were seated it was only uphill from there. Our waitress was extremely nice and friendly and our food was served promptly. We chose onions rings as an appetizer and we're still munching on those when our entrees arrived. I had the fried clam strips which was easily my favorite meal of the vacation. We were never short on drinks and our waitress even gave us to go drinks as we were leaving without us asking. On second thought, that waitress earned back that star lost by the hostess. While on our honeymoon, my husband and I visited this restaurant after several highly rated recommendations. We gave our order relatively quickly after we sat down. However, it was well over an hour until we received our food. That was because they lost our order. Everyone sitting in our section that came after us, got their food and we're ready to leave before we ever had ours. Our waitress never checked on us to let us know that it would be a little longer. The service was absolutely terrible. When I mentioned to the person who brought our food out that we were unhappy, he said to me, "you wanna job?". When they realized that they lost our order, they said they were going to put our order in ahead of everyone else's and it would only be five minutes. That did not happen. We received our food approximately 20 minutes after that. We can understand that an accident of losing an order could happen, however, there was no effort made to make it right. We were charged full price for everything. We believe that they should have offered to comp our meal. In the least, a discount would have been appropriate. As we are now reminiscing about our event full time at this restaurant, we realized we didn't even get the one hush puppy that was supposed to come with the meal. I will say the food was good when we finally got it but it just didn't matter anymore. We will not frequent this place again. Really, really, really bad. Just bad. I have no idea how this place has any positive reviews. First time I went was March of '15. Granted it was off season, but they were open. Ended up ordering the fried chicken, which was repulsive. Sent it back and asked the waitress (who smelled like beer and cigarettes) if it was always that bad and she said: " No clue. I just started yesterday. I don't really care for their food, to be honest" Okaaaaay. Went back last week because Captains Table was closed for lunch. My wife and kids are with me and my son sees the "best chowder on Hatteras" sign and gets excited because he loves Hatteras chowder (clear broth as opposed to NE style cream broth). I ask the waitress if the chowder really beats Captains Tables or Fattys. She gives an enthusiastic "Yes!" ,so we get a bowl. Guess what? It's cream based. And looks (completely uniform potatoes) and tastes like its canned. I get AYCE salad at $7 with "grilled shrimp" add-on for $7. The shrimp arrive on a small plate. Five, tiny shrimp (probably 35-40 count size) that have been sauteed, not grilled, show up. I ask "Is that really it? 1.40 a shrimp?" She says "Yup." Not, "I'm sorry, is that not OK? Can I take them back? Want to switch to the chicken? Let me get you a few more..., etc" Just a "Yup." Total rip off. Kicker was when one of the young local girls that helps out (not a waitress, likely a busser) BARKED at me when I gave my son a cucumber slice. "Sir!!!! Only you can eat the salad unless he buys a plate!." My son is 4. It was a single cucumber slice. Our bill was $75. WTF? Avoid at all costs. No idea how they stay in business. read more

We had a wonderful dinner here last Summer. This year we decided to try takeout so the children could eat at the pool. The person who took my phone order was very friendly. Diamond Shoals in late August is a kinda cool place. It is one of the few restaurants on Hatteras Island that is open on Sunday. Sushi bar in the back looks like fun, but that is also closed on Sundays. Beer selection is solid, I had the Bell's Two Hearted IPA, which was yummy! After you place your order you receive a basket of hush puppies, which are clearly homemade and are awesome. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and that came quickly and was okay. Now here is where the problem occurs. This restaurant operates on "Island Time," which is okay but just prepare yourself. The main entrees arrived and my wife's fried shrimp were not hot; her order was a decent portion and they were luke warm so no huge deal. My son ordered fried scallops and shrimp with sides of french fries and mashed potatoes (anything to avoid eating anything green). The fries and the mashed potatoes were not hot, and it would be charitable to call them warm. The scallops and shrimp also were barely warm, but my son said they were "okay." He is a teenager and a Boy Scout and does not complain about any food like substance. My wife told the waitress that the "food was cold." The waitress said, "I don't know how that happened." Wrong answer! Right answer: Promise to fix it and make it right. This should be preceded by an apology of course (not forthcoming). She brought the mashed potatoes back since we asked that they be heated up (the fries were cold to start and my son did not care about them). When she arrived with the "new" mashed potatoes we all tasted them, they were the same temperature as before--cool! Would it have been so much as to stick them in a microwave for 90 seconds? The problem is not "Island Time." So why would the food arrive less than hot, or even warm. Because after it was cooked it sat around back in the kitchen for 15 minutes! We raised the issue again but at this point we are resigned to the fact that this was a lost cause. When the waitress brought us the to-go containers (I wanted to save the hush puppies and my steamed shrimp) she mentioned that she would talk to the manager and see if they can "discount something." When we received the bill, the original entree which cost $24.99 was discounted by $11.60. I was not overwhelmed by the less than 50 percent discount. It would have been wonderful if the restaurant had simply fixed the situation when it was brought to their attention! read more

Not good. Worst cooked and seasoned salmon I've ever had. It was mushy almost like it was steamed. It was supposed to be blackened yet it had no flavor. Two of the five of us liked our dinner entree. It's getting two stars because the sides were great. My aunts fish was good. My uncle got the seafood platter. Everything was fried and had little taste. Mom like her scallops but the shrimp was overcooked and dads pork chops were barely warm. Would not recommend. read more

Okay not a big deal we ordered breakfast and waited our waitress disappeared for over 20 minutes and we had to ask the hostess to get more coffee! My wife and I were overall very disappointed with our dinner. Our server was either new and nervous or maybe waiting tables isn't her calling, as she was unfamiliar with the menu, specials and wasn't aware it's generally a good idea to check in on her tables every once in a while. I felt the food is overpriced for the quality. Even the drinking water smelled and tasted like a sulfur byproduct, which in turn made the iced tea I was trying to drink a bit harsh. Of course, my wife and I couldn't ask for something else since our server was playing hide and seek somewhere far away from us. I ordered my steak medium and got a very well done and chewy piece of meat that was also cold. Our shrimp was also rubbery. The sides weren't horrible, but not up to par for a restaurant charging higher than average prices for what my wife and I tried to eat. And, of course we couldn't tell anyone about our overcooked food because our waitress was still in hiding, and no one else we tried to flag down was interested in acknowledging us. Our wait after ordering was very long as we saw a very large dinner party get their food, eat their food, pay for their food and leave before we got ours. Perhaps that explains why my steak was like something I got out of the refrigerator and only heated up for 30 seconds, as it may have waited for pickup for a long time before our covert server decided to bring it to us.... After waiting a very long white after we finished, it took several attempts to get an employee to get a to go box for us. Then, after waiting a bit more, a different server approached us and told us there was a mix up with our bill, where our dinner for two was billed to a much larger dinner party. Darn those computers, but I don't see how that should have taken an hour and a half to sort out. Then FINALLY our waitress brings us our ticket and says "Sorry, but you know"...No, we didn't know. We just wanted to get out of there. After having the server stand over my shoulder as I signed our receipt and getting some sort of explanation from the manager, we left and never looked back. Maybe you'll have a great experience at Diamond Shoals, but my wife and I did not. read more

6/14/16 Dinner was GREAT! Sushi was good and seemed like this is the ONLY place for sushi so prices are a bit higher than your usual places in town. Our waitress was ok. She forgot to bring a cold glass for our bottled beer, didn't refill our drinks until we told her to, and added another table's bill to our bill, but other than that she was ok. Would definitely come back to try out some more dishes when back in town. People in this restaurant actually didn't act like they know you're an outer towner and are friendly. I've noticed a lot of places around here that knows you are, act kind of snobby and make you feel unwanted when you're just trying to vacation. read more
