We were looking for a seafood market that was open later than 6 and found this gem! Connected to this great seafood and sushi restaurant, got takeout for 9. Tomato crab bisque was wonderful as was the tuna poke. The tuna was fresh, plentiful and with just enough spice, served w very large house made chips. Others in the group had steamed shrimp with old bay that was great, in addition to blackened shrimp and steamed Alaskan snow crabs, all excellent. We stopped in for dinner based on the awesome reviews, and it was a total letdown. We were seated at the bar, which was fine. However, the bartender had way too much on her plate. Not her fault, but definitely frustrating as a customer. I wasn't offered a refill for the entire meal. We ordered a sushi appetizer and watched it sit at the counter for 20 minutes. Soup was okay. Our dinner was repulsive. Boyfriends fish smelled like dirty feet. He's a major seafood lover & refused to eat more than 2 bites. I ordered shrimp and crab cakes, received one (gross) crab cake & 5 pieces of shrimp that looked like it was from Long John Silvers. Food is way overpriced for what you get. I'm not sure how this place gets even one star - horrible manager with a bad attitude which is the single greatest issue with this place, poor management service - when you think of the worst place to visit in Hatteras - this is it. Reservation for 16 at 8:00 pm. They broke our party into two groups - if they could not handle a group of 16 - you should have said NO WE CAN NOT ACCOMMODATE A PARTY OF 16. Sat down at 8:05. Got water at 8:30 - told "sorry we are busy" Food arrived all together at 9:20 - appetizers together with entrees. Sushi appetizers arrived after the entrees - one arrived for desert. Captains platter was gross - the fish looked raw in a puddle of raw fish juice missing fried clams all together. Iced tea tastes like pond water. After serving our split group, over an hour and 30 minutes after we made our reservation, the nasty stuff they served, the manager swings by our table asking "is everything good" - just clueless. FOOD Perhaps a lot of other people just don't have access to really good sushi because I can't for the life of me figure out what people are loving about it here. It wasn't horrible tasting; it just didn't have decent portions of meat or have good individual taste. The roles all tasted the the same. The other food served was similar. The cream of crab soup got good reviews at our table as did the crab legs. SERVICE The waitress was very friendly but she just wasn't that good. I hate to have to say it because she did great on the attitude but unfortunately she fell apart in remembering other things. PRICE Average for a resort area. ATMOSPHERE The worst part of the place and the main reason I wouldn't go back. So loud that it just ruined the experience. Maybe it's more quite in a booth and another part of the place but are area was just too loud. This place is a must. No kidding. I rarely give out 5 stars but boy did they earn it. Their fish is about as fresh and well-prepared as it gets and I tried it all over the course of a few days. I thought that they were kidding about serving sushi, but after my first experience a the Diamond shoals, I went back and tried. Pretty good, but just not quite up to everything else on their menu. It would be safe to say, though, that for Hatteras Island, the sushi was pretty good. The fish wraps were absolutely my favorite thing on the menu. I was frankly amazed at how much flavor that they could eke out of a packaged flour tortilla. the fish and their 'salsa' were perfect, the right amount of acid, and fruit accent for the tender, fried white fish - I think I had grouper. Breakfasts are above par for the entire island, inexpensive, but prepped with just a little more care than my eggs and pancakes usually received on the island. I called in advance to ask if the vegetarian menu could be made vegan. Since the word "vegetarian" was there I didn't think vegan was too far off. When she didn't know what vegan meant I explained that I just meant that the food didn't contain dairy or eggs. She became very defensive, refused to ask anyone else or check ingredients, and even told me the manager was vegan but refused to let me speak with them. She even told me to "figure it out for myself". This was shocking and upsetting as it is her job to help explain the menu! I could barely get any words in and tried to get off the phone as soon as possible, and I'm very disappointed that I will not be able to eat here, due to both lack of knowledge and poor service. Maybe they had problems 20 years ago (as another reviewer complained) but my experience two weeks ago was nothing short of fantastic. The seafood couldn't be fresher. The servers couldn't be sweeter. They even have great sushi, an unexpected treat in the Outer Banks, which doesn't really have a great variety of more "ethnic" foods. I can't wait to go to back. read more

The décor is a little frayed around the edges, but in the case of Diamond Shoals, this only adds to the charm. This will be a vacation staple for us. The hushpuppies are delicious. The sushi is super fresh and flavorful. Everything we had was really good. The service was impeccable. My daughter was "end of the day" cranky and the waitress brought sharpies out to draw butterflies on her cup - which made my little girl happy as could be. That is going the extra mile for sure. A cut above the typical OBX family seafood place (not that you could ever try them all). Fried oysters were plump and juicy, in contrast to other placed we tried. Clam chowder had fresh black pepper ground into it, that you could actually taste. Impressive. The fried grouper was crispy, not oily, and ditto the fries. Cole slaw was mostly cabbage, not 50% mayo-goop, as it so often is. Basically, if I could trade my other family seafood meals for another meal here, I'd do it. Also, they have Weeping Radish on tap, and other decent beers, too. Kudos for that. Tolerant of kids in the back room, too, at least at lunch time. read more

We were at this business on 08/12/2016 When we go to the beach we expect to pay a little more for fresh seafood. The food is very slow coming out the kitchen and when it arrived at our table it was only lukewarm, very disappointed! The price does not reflect the food or service received. We ate a late dinner at Diamond Shoals, splitting the Mate's Choice (broiled). The grouper was good, cooked to a good but tender temperature; the fried clams were okay, but nothing to write home about. The remainder of the standard seafood items were done fairly well - about standard, I'd say, for a $25 beach seafood dish in a vacation town. Sadly, the waitstaff was sorely lacking; it was obvious they were trying to do final jobs before closing, but the waitress was borderline rude, and definitely avoided and neglected us. One of the locals recommended this to us saying that everything was fresh and to be sure and try the grouper. We ordered the shark bites, captains platter, popcorn shrimp, and tilefish with pineapple salsa. The tilefish was awful, but I'm not sure it was the chef's fault. It was just fishy and mealy. Everything else was good, but I wish we had listened and just ordered a heaping pile of grouper. It was so light and perfectly fried! Keith we were in last Saturday the 11th. Fried food was terrible, I was with my in laws so nothing was said while we were there because it would have upset the family. We ordered the $26 seafood plate. Order one yourself and look at the soggy food that you will be served. The only crispy thing was the fried clams. The plates had water or some type of oil on them. The fried shrimp were delicious, but the broiled grouper was pretty bland despite heavy seasoning on the surface, & the broiled sea scallops were too chewy to enjoy. We were greeted and seated right away around 6.30pm on a Thursday evening. Grouper bites were great. Hush puppies were good. My Husband and son both ordered sushi which they both liked. My crab Patty and shrimp dinner was poor quality. It was lukewarm when it was originally brought out and the server had to take it back for another order. Not worth the 23.99 that I paid for it. By far the best service in the Outer Banks. When I walked in with my family I was greeted by the hostess and asked to rate my service at the end of the meal. Brooke was our server and she was perfect. Very attentive and friendly. If anyone knows anything about OBX good service is a rare quality of any restaurant. Next I ordered a bottle of wine. A great Chard and it was priced cheaper than the same bottle I bought at the grocery store. Very pleased with the wine! Some of my family got the Sushi rolls and they were all perfect. I got the Blackened Salmon along with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes. All were excellent and the mashed were the best I've had in a while. This has now become my favorite in OBX. Lunch today was everything we dreamed of in a good fried fish dinner! Great appetizers, including onion rings from heaven. The shrimp appetizer was shared- so crunchy and good. Good fresh salad bar with a good salad variety. The blackened tuna catch of the day was tasty. My wife loved the fresh popcorn shrimp and the special sushi roll was fresh and very good. Breakfast is standard diner food and prices, though they have a few seafood options (I had a seafood omelet). Dinner was overpriced; they were rather skimpy on the volume compared to elsewhere, though there was nothing wrong with the taste (both my wife and I had shimp and scallops). I dont think there are many sushi options around Hatteras, which may give Diamonds some uniqueness. The deserts are worth mentioning: bakery-made cakes and pies, and really yummie. We ate lunch twice here during week long visit. The food is very good. The first time the Clam Chowder was not so good. Much better on second visit. Always a go to when we're on the island visiting our folks in Avon. If fresh fish is what you're after, they won't disappoint and if you just happen to find yourselves in the area during Thanksgiving, you can have your turkey and dressing just like mom used to make.
