First time visiting this location after my usual Dickie's in Clairemont closed (sad face). This restaurant seems to have a smaller overall store footprint, but still retains all the feels of from the other Dickie's locations I've patronized over the years. I dropped my same day order via their app and popped in after the scheduled pickup time because I knew it would be busy and they would likely be behind schedule--they were. The hardworking staff were doing their best to fill orders with the team members they had on deck. They easily could have used at least 1-2 more to cover the rush but I'm sure it's hard to justify those costs between busy spikes like Independence Day weekends. Anywho, after a bit of waiting in the store I was able to confirm my order and carry it out. I should have spent my time more wisely and filled up several small containers of their signature sauce while I waiting for my order to be filled. Normally, I can request a small container of sauce but it was crazy busy and I was just happy to get my order and that it was correct so I could return to feed my hungry family. - Brisket was solid. - Same with the pulled pork. - Seems like the yummy biscuits were recently replaced with a pitiful version of Texas toast; or perhaps that's just what this location offers. - Small salad is a joke here - Beans are still a favorite of me and my kids - Fries were a soggy mess Not a bad first visit. The meats were solid, which really are the key selling point here for me and the fam. Didn't like the Texas toast here at all or the sad excuse for a salad. I don't usually review chain restaurants, but after a full daddy-son day, we were both wiped and hungry. I was craving some southern BBQ, searched nearby spots, and saw Dickey's pop up about 5 miles away. Decided to give it a shot even though the reviews online had mixed reactions. Glad I did. This place is under new ownership and it's a completely different experience now. The food is way better, the vibe is better, and honestly the old reviews don't do it justice anymore. When we walked in, it had a clean setup but still gave that southern BBQ feel. I ordered sliced brisket, smoked chicken, and smoked turkey. All of it was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. For sides I got baked beans and mac and cheese, plus Texas toast. Everything came out hot and tasted legit. My son kept stealing bites off my plate, so that's how you know it was good. The guy running the front was cool too. Real friendly, made us feel welcome right away. Gave off a solid BBQ joint vibe. Overall, this spot impressed me. We were looking to enjoy a Barbecue lunch and found it at Dickey's. The staff was friendly and made us feel right at home. We enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. The meat was full of flavor and you could add your favorite barbecue sauce. I liked being able select my own drink and go back for refills. We ordered tonight from Dickeys in San Marcos. I will admit it's been about two years as in the past the food was just OK and small portions. But tonight we decided to try again and were very happy. I ordered the new make your own plate. I did turkey and chopped brisket over coleslaw. It was 1/4 lp. brisket which was crisp and very tender. Had a nice bark to it, and the turkey was smokey. I liked the coleslaw too not normally a fan of slaw but I am trying to watch carbs. The slaw was nice and crunchy and diced instead of strips .It was very filling,I had the buffalo sauce on the side. Hubby had the 3 meat plate, with ribs, cheddar sausage and pulled pork. He liked all the meats, and the okra. His came with Texas toast, he also had beans and a corn muffin. This was my first time trying Dickey's Barbecue Pit. I like to order the family combo or combo meals in bbq places. I like that you can try a little bit of everything they have to offer. Different meats and sides. I ordered the family combo for $89.99 for myself and my family. We got the pork ribs and sliced brisket. I was expecting whole slices. This brisket looked like pulled pork. I just feel when you cut brisket this way it drys out faster. The ribs were really good. The meat was falling off the bone. And when you check in on yelp, you get a free sandwich. I picked the turkey sandwich. I forgot to take a picture of it. It was ok. The sides we picked were Bbq baked beans, they were good. Loaded mashed potatoes. They weren't to our liking. They felt like they need some kind of gravy to go with it. We also got Mac and cheese. That Mac and cheese was so disappointing. They were cold. Not even lukewarm. Such a waste of a side option. We didn't even eat it. The ladies that worked at this restaurant were really nice. But, if they had checked the food temps on the Mac and cheese they would've known right away that the Mac and cheese needed to be warmed up. Another thing that I didn't like about this restaurant was the bathrooms. They have 2 unisex bathrooms. Both bathrooms were dirty. And I mean dirty! They both looked like they haven't been clean in a while. I walked out and told the girls working that both bathrooms were dirty. They said they would look. Meat was very tender and the sauce was a superstar. It went downhill from there. 2) Sides: green beans were a complete and total fail. Soggy bland partially redeemed by tangy vinegar back note - but really a hard no. Really never again. I grew up in the south - total fail. 3) Cole slaw- nothing special--absolutely nothing special- waste of effort. Bland, no creativity too "corporate" (uniform / uninspired) it reminded me of KFC, but KFC is tastier. Waste of $. 4) Rolls- uninteresting and again uninspired. Again - too corporate like they were made last month by a robot with a mediocre ingredient list and an ice cream scoop. Desserts: 1) Brownie/blondie - arrived in plastic - tasted like drywall. One bite, directly to the bin. A disgrace to brownies anywhere. It should not be on the menu. It belongs in a gas station convenience store if one is desperate and can't find anything else. 2) Pecan pie (my absolute favorite dessert) delicious but - for the price - SO SMALL A PORTION (especially for the price) when I saw it arrive with my order I was very very disappointed. Never again. I felt betrayed. (As a cook, I take my food and portions very seriously.) Summary: I will consider returning for brisket, pulled pork and will likely buy a bottle of the sauce. We ordered two kids meals, a brisket potato, a one-side brisket plate, and a two-side pork with brisket plate. The food was fantastic! The brisket was incredibly tender and full of flavor. I also had the BBQ bacon beans, which were absolutely delicious. My son's baked potato with brisket was a hit--perfectly buttery, cheesy, and just the right amount of smoky flavor. It was a comfort food dream. The service was just as impressive as the food. Nash took excellent care of us--he gave us a helpful rundown of the menu and made us feel truly welcome. I hate to do this as the manager (owner??) was so nice and friendly however, poor quality needs to be called out. I ordered 'to go' 4 meals with 3 sides. The bill was over $100 and every entree/meat item was terrible! The 2 chicken entrees (bone in wings and boneless wings) and the brisket were nearly inedible they were so dry - the bone-in chicken wings were absolutely inedible! My kids and I came for a fundraiser night. It's our first time back since the new ownership. Previous owner(s) didn't really care what they were serving so all you got was burned, dry tougher-than-jerky "bbq." The new owner (or was he a manager?) He's actually from Texas! He recognized my Texas Tech Ŧ hat and we talked about how he would travel to parts of west Texas back in the day. But wait Art, that's nice and all, but how's the BBQ? I can honestly say that it's just not just good for a chain, it's just good BBQ. Periodt. What makes it so good? Well, for one, the brisket was done phenomenally well. I usually don't order brisket outside of Texas because it's very rarely done well. Brisket is literally the hardest thing to cook since it's such a dense cut of meat. It's not like pulled pork that is so forgiving, you can just neglect it on the smoker and it still turns out good. There's a very narrow temperature window where brisket is perfect (around 196°F to 203°F, but this is highly debatable). Below that temp, it's chewy. Above that temp, it's beef jerky. At the perfect temp and you get this bouncy, juicy, tender cut of meat that you don't even need teeth to chew. I'm honest when I say that this Dickey's hit this perfect temp. In addition, the pork ribs were also done perfectly. Most people assume that you want fall off the bone tender. They think they want a rib that you barely pick up the bone and the meat falls off. No. That is amateurish. Complete mastery of pork ribs meat is to have a very tiny bit of tug. You have to be able to bite into the rib and leave your teeth marks behind without all the meat being pulled off. THIS Dickey's nailed this as well. I originally ordered a full rack to take home, but after my brisket, I had to try the ribs. I'm glad I did. I'm extremely pleased with the BBQ at this particular Dickey's and recommend it without hesitation. read more

Tried this place a couple years ago I guess when it was under different ownership. Was craving some good BBQ today and i had heard new ownership so decided to give it a try again. When I went in, there were two other people (same party) waiting for their food. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich only to be told they were out of pulled pork. Decided to go with the single meat plate (got the brisket) with potato salad and baked beans as sides. The food was delicious but it literally took 45 mins to get my order. A family of 5 came in after me and it seemed like they were scrambling to get their order first. Wow!! I just can't say enough positive things about our experience at Dickey's (San Marcos). The restaurant left such an impression on us that we've eaten dinner there twice in the last four days. On both occasions, the food was AWESOME as was the service provided by Nash, who treated me and my wife as if we had been his life-long friends! I've update this review from a couple of years ago. I thought I'd give it another try. This time I ordered the brisket sandwich, fries and a drink. The fries were pretty good. The meat in the sandwich was delicious. Plenty of bbq sauces were available. It was served hot, the meat was not fatty, it was tender and very tasty. I thought the bun was so so but favor of the meat compensated for that. Service was very good. People were friendly, ask if I needed any questions answered. They brought my food to me quicker than expected. Very happy with service. The one thing still lacking is the look of the place. Very worn looking, overhead menu was full of mark outs and tape overs.
