4.5 round up. I had very low expectations coming in and was very pleasantly surprised. Their drive through isn't working yet so it forced out hand to dine in. Lots of space to sit. Easy touch screen order and in person counter service order. They have an 8 dollar special right now for container of rice with katsu or rice and teriyaki chicken, each with a small drink. They actually give you quite a bit of food for 8 bucks! Also ordered hawaiian feast plate double veggies which I love that you can do that.. another with kalbi and chicken. Kalbi was okay but nothing to write home about. Hawaiian beef tasty but also just sauced beef. The chicken was good and moist.. katsu tasty good and crunchy. Mac salad is good and i love the steamed cabbage and broccoli. About 50 total. Fed a family of 4 for lunch dinner and still have leftovers. Overall it is like L&L back when they first opened and had big generous portions and good quality.. its better than l&l.. It does the job to feed the family and get some rice and tasty meat... i still prefer the other options in sd for Hawaiian food like homestead hawaiian.... but this does a good job to scratch the hankering. I would have given 3.5 stars if possible. The place has a bit of an odd layout. There's a tall wall about 5 feet from the front counter that separates the counter from the dine in seating area. It houses the soda machine, sauce station (teriyaki and ponzu) and well as napkins and utensil. When you enter there is a bar height counter/table with two touchscreen ordering devices so you order, take a your receipt and sit and wait. The girl at the counter seemed nice enough but our only interaction was her calling my order number out and when I approached the counter she asked if I was number whatever it was. My daughter ate appetizers of crab rangoons and spam musbii. She said they were "good." I don't know if there was crab in them but they looked like Panda Express cream cheese wontons. The musubi had rice (don't know if it was seasoned), spam which looked to be cooked in some teriyaki sauce and wrapped in seaweed. I couldn't tell if there was furikake under the spam. I did not actually eat any of her food so ithese are my observations. I got the fire island chicken which came with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. The mac salad was okay, but I didn't care for the fire island chicken. I should have gotten something more traditional like katsu chicken but I'm a sucker if anything says it's spicy. It wasn't btw. I don't think I'll be back. I'd stop and get my daughter musubi if she asked but only if I was trying not to stink up our house by frying up spam. It was like $32 for our order. As sad as it sounds, when I think if Hawaiian food, L&L has become the standard I have to compare any other new place against. L&L is by no means great ... it's just a good average to determine if I should go to a new place or stick with what is reliably pretty good. And in that regard, Ono is about on par with that average. You still get a good amount of food for the cost. That price range in similar. They have similar menus. And both the food quality and taste feel close to the same. The Chicken Katsu I had was moist, well cooked, and not too oily, the Spam Misubi was well prepared, and the Mac Salad was pretty top notch in that Hawaiian style that you can expect. So, what can I say that Ono does better? The place itself is cleaner. Katsu sauce is served from a pump station that you can get on your own, which I really do appreciate. And they seem to include steamed vegetables in with their meals along with the white rice; a nice and welcome option. As for what they're missing at Ono, their Misubi selection is limited to the traditional Spam, meaning they dont have Katsu or Sausage Misubi like L&L. There are a few menu items conspicuously missing from Ono, like Moco Loco, the Saiman Noodles, or even burgers for kids that aren't game on trying something new. And if I'm being picky, the portions are probably a little smaller (though that's probably a good thing in the grand scheme of things). So, if you're nearby and hungry for a scoop of rice and mac salad with anything you order, Ono can easily satisfy that craving for something salty and sweet. I probably won't go out of my way to come here, but it's certainly a place I won't say no to. read more

I haven't really been to many Hawaiian restaurants but I dined here with my father and brother for the first time and am very much looking forward to coming back. The store is kept cool during these hot times and well kept with everything clean and organized. Inside you can place your order via self helping kiosk or cashier. we ordered three plates and this is what we got. I order the chicken katsu plate that came with crispy chicken katsu cuts served overtop a bed of cabbage and broccoli with a hefty side of rice and a small side of macaroni salad. my father had the same but the mini plate and my brother had the hawaiian BBQ chicken. The chicken katsu was crispy, juicy and went excellent with the cabbage and broccoli which was also cooked well but i gotta say my favorite thing about the whole meal was the macaroni salad. yes.. the macaroni salad that is unlike any other mac salad i have ever eaten was so good i can't stop thinking about it and it's been days. they also serve really good spam musubi too. I came here at first for the grand opening so I can get the bogo deal. This time I came to redeem the lovely coupons they gave me. I redeemed the free spam musubi so delicious and so filling! I also redeemed the free young coconut. It was so refreshing for that hot day! I bought the guava pie. It tastes so good, like a way better pop tart! The last thing I redeemed was the bogo coupon. I bought the bbq combo and the katsu combo. The grilled chicken and beef were so good. So much food and plenty to take home for another meal or to share. What a wonderful grand opening! I really enjoyed the live entertainment especially the dancers. Tropical fun vibes were everywhere in celebration of this new business. There's only three ONO's in San Diego ( soon to be a fourth ) and for some reason I've been to all three. I wasn't trying to, I just sort of noticed them out the window as I was driving by. As before, I am impressed. The one in Vista is probably the smallest and least themed of the Onos but I'll cut them a break since you can't fit too much into one place. Besides, it's about the food. I love it here. In many ways I can't tell the difference between them and L&L Hawaiian. I mean no offense, it's just that if you were to put down a plate of each from both, I couldn't tell the difference. If you like L&L then you'll like Ono's. read more

We chose three different meats and every single one was great. I especially loved the crispy fish though - I'll be back for that alone. Sorry, Ono--I know you're new to Vista, but compared to the L&L in San Marcos, this location just wasn't up to par. My wife ordered the Kalua pork, and the cabbage wasn't cooked with the pork, so it lacked the flavor you'd expect. The pasta salad was also too heavy on the mayo. I had the Kalbi short ribs, and unfortunately they were mostly fat rather than tender meat, making them greasy with very little flavor. I also tried the beef musubi, but the unsweetened beef didn't pair well with the seaweed. Overall, the food was edible but lacked flavor. I'd also recommend chopping the cabbage into smaller pieces, we received mostly large chunks from the bottom of the cabbage "the stump". read more

I waited 20 minutes for my food and when I was about to check in to see what's going on with my food, another lady brought a plate of food in saying it was not hers and turns out she had my order the whole time so I was waiting for 20 minutes for another lady just to take my order. when the order popped up to me, I walked over. They apologize they didn't compensate me for anything and just thank me. all disappointing because I waited 20 minutes for my food just so someone else can take it. they need to be more vigilant on their order system. read more

The building that they opened up in has been remodeled and is cheerfull, clean and bright. they food there is excellent Hawaiian faire including marinated steak, goldent brown chicken with a crispy covering and many other sumptous Hawaiian plates that are all top shelf. They also have an desert on the counter that is filled with Hawaiian grust inside of a gooey dough like shell that is to die for. But the bestpart of the thriving business is their staff and especially "Valentina" who is a joy to be around. She is personable, knowledgeable, funny with I smile on her face at all times.
