I was placing a large takeout order for a family trip this weekend and had one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a long time. The employee who took my call (Jason) was extremely short, dismissive, and condescending from the start. When I called back shortly after to add to the order, his attitude only got worse. Instead of being helpful, he spoke to me in a way that felt rude and unprofessional, as if I was inconveniencing him by simply trying to place or update an order. At one point, I asked to speak with a manager and was told there was no manager available. Given the tone and lack of courtesy throughout the interaction, we ultimately decided to cancel our entire order. I chose this Hawaiian BBQ restaurant based on the great reviews. But I was disappointed after having the BBQ Chicken plate. The chicken was not cooked like the photo on the wall menu. I prefer when the meat is charred and it wasn't. The flavor was just ok. The macaroni salad was bland. The plate includes 2 small scoops of steamed rice and finely chopped raw cabbage under the chicken. The chicken was freshly made. This is our go-to Hawaiian BBQ place. There is seating inside, but we most often get our food to go here. I love the #1 combo with short ribs, bbq beef and bbq chicken, 2 scoops of rice and mac salad. It's really straight forward food. You get exactly what you expect, but all too often you don't, so I appreciate that! Locally owned place - the guy running the cashier and the grill (and probably the owner!) remembers my husband and his order after not seeing him for a couple years. Pretty amazing! There's another Ohana location in Oceanside at 76 and College. That one's pretty good too but I prefer this location. We were starving. We were in the area. Looked up Hawaiian food on yelp since we weren't from Vista. Easy parking, convenient location off the 78 highway. Atmosphere was very Hawaiian local style, and kinda felt like home.. or a restaurant in Kauai. Anyways, spam masubi's were great! Their rice reminded me of my childhood somehow. I got the chicken katsu and volcano chicken plate with the additional request of an over medium egg on top. It's very satisfying and might even have you coming back for more. This is a Hawaiian place near the north county courthouse in Vista so I thought I'd try it while on jury duty. It's a typical kind of place ordering at the counter and then they bring you your food. I ordered the Kahlua Pork. I make it at home sometimes so I thought I would try it. It was good, but not great (I like mine better). I also felt it was kind of expensive at $16+ just for the pork. He suggested the marinated chicken since I was having trouble choosing my second option and I'm so glad I listened! As soon as I got my food I could already see that they cook everything fresh to order. The chicken katsu was very crispy and had a good ratio of meat and breading. The marinated chicken was sooo good. It was super flavorful you could also taste the grilled flavor along with the marinade they use. It was tender and juicy. I'm excited to try the other meats they have here whenever I'm back in the area! The pricing was also very affordable! The only thing I thought was okay was the Mac salad, it had decent flavor but I've had more flavorful ones in the past. There was also no dressing on my garden salad but that could've been my fault since I didn't ask but I also wasn't offered, so not sure if they have dressing at all. Only reason I'm giving a 4 (instead of 5) is because they don't have lumpia (or the likes) as other Hawaiian style places do. That's said, they definitely make it up and worth it. Ordered the #1 which is a bbq combo plate that includes chicken, beef and short ribs. The cost of the plate is $12 which is appropriate pricing considering the 3 meats and it comes with rice and Mac salad. I thought the $12 was a good deal with just what is included but once you see the portion size, you get your moneys worth! Now, there are lots of places that pile it high and don't charge a lot BUT the quality is pretty much on the lower side; that's not the case here. The bbq/teriyaki flavor is present and it taste good. The beef was probably my favorite, very tender. The chicken was juicy, not overcooked and not dry. The short rib is good too but I honestly preferred the beef portion more; my preference perhaps others would feel different. The Mac salad I really enjoyed, it was very similar to the way it's made on Island, which if you've been you know there is a noticeable difference In the way Mac salad is made from the states (I hate the way it's made in the states). I will definitely be back here, the price point is great and the quality is way more than you would expect. I'm happy to have found this little gem (tucked between Oggis and Thai one on) in Vista.
