I was once a regular here, the food was incredible and the prices were fair. Now I'm yet to have a pleasant experience anytime I come here. I genuinely avoid this place at all costs but I get dragged here by friends and clients. The quality of the food has deteriorated to such a level that it's genuinely inedible. And to top it all off, the last time I came here, they shrunk the menu, took away the side options, and STILL raised the prices. (You aren't struggling because of the quality of your food. This place is just miserable) 3 visits ago, a couple months back, I ordered a burger because tbh, how can you mess that up? I ordered a double patty with no fries. Of course there was only ONE patty left in the entire restaurant, oh well such is life, but to top it off: the patty smelled of rotten sewage. I spit it out and returned it without receiving any sort of refund. 2 visits ago, I ordered catfish nuggets because of my previous experience, and was served soggy fried fish with dripping wet cabbage like it was just pulled out of a colander without drying. Whatever right? ($24 pre tax/tip btw) Now yesterday, I ordered a grilled catfish filet because the fried version was disappointing. (WHICH TOOK 40 MINUTES OF MY LUNCH BREAK TO COOK?) Fish was meh. Over seasoned like someone spilled the pepper bottle on the grill. And the fries tasted like dirty sludge like the fryer hasn't been cleaned in weeks. And to add insult to injury, I tasted mildew in my Coke Zero. Whether it's the dishwasher or the lines in the soda machine I have no clue but how can I strike out every single time I come here? I swear this used to be MY JOINT. The food was so good and the ambiance was amazing. Now I genuinely feel my skin crawl whenever I walk by this place. I'm sorry Felix's do better. I'm incredibly tempted to report this place to the health department to whip some shape into these miserable people who are serving mediocre service to paying customers. Came here for the ribs. Their corn bread was freshly made so it was warm, sweet , soft and delicious. The ribs were also good however, the service needs a little improvement. Our food was sitting outside ready for about 10 mins before they served it to us. The kitchen is right in front view of the sitting area so you can see when the food is ready. My wife and I have eaten here 10-15 times and every time we leave full bellies and with to-go boxes. This food is like the kind your grandma used to make. The server was a very nice young lady that was extremely attentive and always had a smile! The music is almost as soulful as the food. A great place to go for date or a just a quick bite. So my local Felix in Oceanside closed I knew they had a San Marcos location, but I thought it also had closed I was nearby on business so I decided to swing by the San Marcos location to my surprise they have reopened so I was correct. They had closed, but they're reopened. Also to my surprise, they had barbecued beef rib ribs. I say to my surprise because my Oceanside store for the last 6 to 9 months had an issue or problem, keeping beef ribs in stock. Enough enough about the Oceanside facility which most of you know Hass closed So my niece and I walked in first question they asked is is my dog a Service animal which she is My niece and I sat down my dog laid down. We placed our order. I'm gonna cut it to Chase Service with excellent Best we've had it Felix and probably 10 years absolutely wonderful Service. Our server was attentive as if we were the only customer by water glass was never empty our salad and then chicken/barbecue rib dinner arrived quickly. I think Felixs keeps getting better! Web had food delivered for dinner. I had the catfish topped with crayfish and shrimp in a creamy sauce. It was very good with a side of cabbage and hoppin john. My husband had tbe rib tips, it was a generous portion and was smoky and slightly sweet. The sauce did not seem as sweet as we have had in the past on the pulled pork and ribs. Which is a bit to sweet kinda like candy, this seemed more toned down which is a plus! . He got greens and red beans and rice on the side. He really enjoyed the greens and slurped down the pot liquor at the end. Their dishes come with delicious corn muffin. We did have an order of fried green tomatoes. Everything here was awesome! Amazing bbq! I had the rib tips with Mac n cheese and the candied yams omg! Sooo good! The Mac n cheese tasted like homemade it was wonderful! Fabulous BBQ. We went for dinner on a Saturday night. A little odd with the live band setting up. The space is really small for live music in my opinion. I hope this means they'll be able to take on more space soon because music and BBQ! Yes please. Food was incredible. We had.baby back ribs, brisket, veggies, Mac n cheese, slaw. All were flavorful and big portions. Staff is on it with their amazing service. Every table was taken while we were there. They definitely need more seating. Only negative was the peach cobbler. My work had an event at Liberty Station last Wednesday, June 4th and this company was our caterer. I didn't know who it was at first but when I went out to ask, it was Felix's BBQ that's in the North County area. I've heard of this place before but have not gotten a chance to try their food until then. Overall, our catered Lunch was delicious. There were a choice of BBQ chicken or baby back ribs which I chose the ribs. I loved the Ribs, mac & cheese, the mini sweet potato cheesecake and most especially the cornbread muffins. Thann you to the caterers for giving me extra muffins at the end . The peach cobbler was a little undercooked so majority of us ate the peaches only. The starter cornbread was great, I didn't even need butter, and I'm glad they had unsweetened iced tea. The brisket was great. Enough to take home, and I just finished it tonight. The baked beans were terrific. The collard greens were outstanding. So good I might have just had those and skipped the meat - but who am I kidding? I'll have all three again! I came here for the 2nd time and have now tried multiple items from the menu. If I had to choose one thing I would come back for here it would definitely be the gumbo. Out of everything I tried that stood out to me most for flavor. I tried several meats and sides as well as Cajun alfredo. I honestly don't think the food here is worth the price. I need to mention that the servers have been very attentive and friendly. I would give them 5 stars. The meats unfortunately didn't do it for me. I tried chicken, tri tip, brisket, and ribs. I will say the ribs are cooked well. But I prefer a dry rub and these come sauced. The pasta upset my stomach. Probably because of all the grease I'm not sure. The fried okra and green tomatoes were pretty good. They also have rewards if you sign up but I didn't see that advertised anywhere. It was also freezing in there which was a little uncomfortable for me. People seem to enjoy it here though so come try it for yourself! Taking off a star because the brisket was disappointing - not dry but far too chewy and the sauce wasn't a good complement. However, the tri-tip was excellent good flavor good texture melt in mouth etc. The sides were generally good especially the corn bread - though the hush puppies we weren't really fans of it seemed like they were missing something. Cute restaurant though, everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Ample seating and not too loud. Would be willing to go back and try even more of the meats. read more

I am a fan of this north county southern barbecue joint. They offer Cajun and soul food favorites served up in a relaxed atmosphere. We've been here a few times and so far each time we've come the staff has been very friendly and accommodating. I have really enjoyed the gumbo, catfish plate and the catfish nuggets with a side of fried okra. My family prefers the brisket, fried chicken, and the ribs. Doing a search for soul food - we found this restaurant by Google search. This was our first night on our trip so not familiar with the area. We called because the website only indicates carry out & catering and we wanted to find a restaurant with dining area. Good thing we did call because we did find out they have seating. As soon as we entered we were greeted with a very pleasant young lady who immediately asked "dine in or take out?" Great opening to invite customers to dine in first. She seated us right away, handed menus and saw the table had not been properly cleaned so she immediately excused herself to get a cleaning towel and proceeded to clean the table. Not long after she came back to the table with flatware and plates. Before asking for our beverage order she asked if we had had any questions. To which we did have a couple of questions. After she answered them she took our beverage order. One of the questions was about the Mac &cheese and how it was prepared. The waitress wasn't sure because each chef prepares it differently. (Hmm? No consistent recipe?). She did say that if I did not like it I could try another side dish. We ordered the Rib Tip dinner (regular and platter) the sides ordered were Yams, Red beans & rice, Mac & cheese and collard greens. The difference between the dinner and platter is meat portion. After taking our orders she brought out some hot corn muffins with a side of butter. We did not have a long for our meals - which is a good thing especially when people come in hungry...the corn muffins as an appetizer was great (rather than waiting for the meal to come out.). The food was hot and smelled delicious. The Mac & cheese was not appealing, however I tasted it and did not like it. It tasted flour forward and the noodles were a bit too aldente for my tastebuds. The waitress asked what I would like to exchange it for; black eyed peas was my choice. The rib tips were meaty and tender, not fatty. The greens were tasty, red beans & rice and black eyed peas (seemed to have the same seasoning) however good. The yams were inconsistent (kind of like they were either mixed from a previous batch or not stirred to have a consistent texture and or flavor.). Some of the yams were soft and seasoned well, while some were tough (as if not cooked throughout) and less seasoned. Our beverages were okay we ordered unsweetened tea (kind of weak - did not have the brown brewed color) and sweet tea (it was quite a bit darker than the unsweetened). Over all it is a nice place to pop in...some of the items were a bit overpriced, however there are reasonable options. If you are in the mood for soul food and in the area drop in. It's been a good decade since I was at the Felix's out in Oceanside. I remember liking the barbecue, but being disappointed in the sides. This time around, while checking out the one in San Marcos, I came thinking I would try the same to see if I enjoyed the fare a bit more. Starting with the Corn Bread, it was perfectly moist and sweet. Kernels of corn give it a good chew. And there's no extraneous cheese or peppers in there to overcomplicate things. Honestly, can't make corn bread much better than this. For an appetizer, I had a cup of the Seafood Gumbo. This was the one part of the meal that was a bit underwhelming. The roux wasn't as rich as I was expecting and aside from a single shrimp, there wasn't much more meat in it. This was likely caused by getting a cup over a more substantial bowl, but it was still only a mildly tasty disappointment. Instead of barbecue, I couldn't help but opt for the Southern Smothered Oxtails. These were brilliant. A rich gravy, sweetened by onions and garlic, the meat was tender, gelatinous, and easily sucked off the bone in fleshy and lightly chewy chunks. My only gripe would be that I think I would have liked some red wine to have been in there with that sauce ... though I think I'm in the wrong region's cuisine for that. On the side were some perfect mashed potatoes and Fried Green Tomatoes. The latter were surprisingly juicy, not that good on their own, but the breading and remoulade on the side made them a tasty treat. In the end, my trip to Felix's was much better this time around. Yes, I still haven't tried the barbecue from the San Marcos shop, which is what I should be trying. But, the oxtails alone make this worth coming back for another go around. read more

San Diego isn't exactly known for barbecue but you can get good and bad barbecue anywhere. I had really bad barbecue throughout Memphis but I have enjoyed great barbecue in very random locations. This is Felix's San Marcos location and they have a nice, spacious, modern-looking indoor dining area and a few tables outside. It doesn't really look like a classic BBQ joint but it's very clean and the music they were playing inside was great. They also do plenty of takeout business which is what I did. My food was ready about 15 minutes after I ordered it which was perfect. I went with the Clara's brisket platter and I received about eight long strips of brisket plus two sides. I also received two complimentary cornbread muffins. The brisket was cooked well and it had good flavor was not amazing. It was nice and tender but just not very juicy. I highly recommend you order extra sauce because you are going to want it. The sauce is very good and not too sweet. For my sides, I went with the mac and cheese and baked beans. The mac and cheese is made with these big, oversized noodles and the cheese is baked on top. It was absolutely wonderful. The beans were nice and smoky and the freshly-baked cornbread muffins were excellent. I was a little disappointed in the brisket but would return and probably try the ribs or sausage. KUSI had them on the news and they offered a $50 gift card for $20 so we got it. My wife got the baby back ribs entree with yams and mac & cheese. I got the combo entree - chicken and baby back ribs and I got the same sides. You get a little corn muffin too. We added 2 desserts to try - the sweet potato cheesecake & their peach cobbler. Even with getting $50 of food for $25, for this order we still had to add about $30+ to it so it's pretty pricey for take out. I have had some big platters there, but lately, have been just getting the Spring Salad with a side of brisket or pulled pork on top, and bbq sauce as the dressing. Works for me. The mini cornbread muffins are great, but gone before the meal comes. I tend to order another round (2nd one is on me...) to go along with the meat salad. The cornbread seems to be a favorite (comes with table service) and their fries are fantastic (possibly a top 3 EVER). The jambalaya is too sweet for my taste and Mom didn't care for the coleslaw dressing, but she did like her pulled-pork sandwich. Mom had Dr. Pepper and I had soda water.
