I just went here today to have keys made. Cost is just $1.59 per key. Service is great. They go above and beyond. I previously came here to find small sized lettering to stick to an outside item. The staff special ordered the lettering for me. I am talking about some peel the back off lettering that cost like $2 or $3. Anyone else would have just stated we do not have it. Just moved to the area and I am super thankful to have this right across from my apartment. I do a lot of crafting and I found that their prices are pretty reasonable and they have everything you could ever really need. I even went to a few Home Depots looking for a specific spray paint but had no luck. I then called Dick's and they had numerous options for me. I've been a FiDi resident for over 10 years and have frequented Dick's hardware for most of my time here. They are overpriced but do have most of the special bulbs I need for my apartment or to make copies of keys. There are always two people working the desk- the blonde woman who is usually pretty pleasant and the man with the dark hair and mustache who has always been miserable every time I've been a customer. I had to get keys made from the master set from an apartment building- these master sets cost $200+ if they are lost. The set had a front door key and a mailbox key. When I arrived to make copies, they told me it would be 20 minutes because they had to get the correct key type to copy and the guy was delivering them. They asked me if I wanted to leave it and come back and I said no- I wanted the master keys in my possession because they are so costly. Next thing you know, another customer needed keys made and they had her's and made her keys. She left and they gave her MY master set. They completely denied losing them or giving them to someone else. After two days of dealing w/the building management, stupidly enough, I went back there with another copy of the key thinking he would do the copies at no charge because they lost them- but NO, after he made them, he charged me!!!! I was furious. Then, I found out from the building that I needed to get a copy of the mailbox key so I called Dick's and told them they were responsible for the mailbox key charge and I was going to bring the bill. The man HUNG UP ON ME. I will NEVER go there again and I will make sure my FiDi neighbors won't either. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. read more

This hardware store had the rare light bulbs I was looking for. I tried three other stores before I found what I needed at Dick's. The owner helped me out personally, even when it didn't benefit him financially. Plus, a store with this large of an inventory, hidden in the Financial District-- it's really a gem. read more

Rude, incompetent and overpriced. I went in to copy to keys.. I hand over two keys and say "I'd like these copied". He says "one of each". I reply "yes please". He proceeds (I later discover) to copy one key twice. He comes back tosses them on the counter; charges me 5 bucks and I say thank you. No reply. He tosses the change on the counter. not a word. Its amazing how much they were able to pack in such a small store, although it does have a basement. Anyways, every time I visit with what I think is and on request, not only do they carry whatever I need to get the job done but the staff always knows what I will need and where it's located. read more

It is a bit low and too easy to say, don't shop here, the owner is a dick. So here's the longer story. For over a year I've bought about a half dozen items at Dick's, as it is the closest hardware store to where I work. But I've had several problems: two bad light bulbs and a dead battery. The first bulb blew out after only a few weeks. I didn't bother to return without receipt or packaging, but was annoyed. When the battery didn't work I returned with packaging and receipt and it was honored. The last light bulb, an inexpensive $3.80 Sylvania, never worked at all but was not provided an exchange because the packaging had been thrown out. Moreover, he remembered the battery and claimed it was not his, as his are made in the U.S. and that had been from China. I probably wouldn't be posting this review if he had not out and out implied I was a liar. But clearly he prizes his $1.50 profit over a long time loyal patron and the adage "the customer is always right." CAVEAT EMPTOR, save all your packaging and receipts, as this place seems to order cheap goods and then deny it. Or better yet, head to Fulton Street where you can find more reliable and honest business people. read more

I am continually amazed at the volume of stuff available at Dick's hardware - they always have what I need. The owner is helpful and can always point you to what you need. Prices are considerably higher than home depot, but given that Dick's Hardware is around the corner from my apartment, unless I need an expensive item, I go to Dick's Hardware. read more

My go-to hardware store in the financial district. I probably make 2-3 visits a week here for parts, equipment, and (pretty much) all of my tools. The staff is friendly and readily available to assist whenever I have a question or can't find something that I need to get my work projects done. I literally have never met a more rude person in my entire life than the guy working at the counter. When I walked in and said "Hi" to him, he didn't even look up at me. I waited for few moments to ask him if they made key copies. He was giggling at his cellphone, slowly moving towards to counter. Didn't look at me once. After another minute, he finally looked at me and said "yes". He then took the keys from me, put them down on the counter, grabbed a bowl of soup and started eating. At that point, I was more curious than annoyed. He complained about how hot the soup was (eh?), then how dry his mouth was (ok?), then drank some water, then finally took my keys. It took him about 5 minutes to make 4 keys (honestly, longest time I've seen anybody do that ever) and he charged me $12 for 4 keys (I mean, seriously?). Bottom line, in case you're looking for a clown who is probably tripping on some heavy drugs, do not come here. read more

I generally like to visit neighborhood, mom & pop owned stores over the big chains. My last visit to Dick's Hardware proved exactly why. The owner helped me replace a previously purchased gallon of paint which seemed to have gone bad between purchase and first use (about 24 hours). The very nice paint specialist recreated the same color for me, which had to be specially made. I truly appreciated their customer care, which made the whole process quick and easy. Shady place! They overcharged me and started yelling and cursing me when I wanted the money back. Do not shop here.

Everytime I walk into the store, I walk away with exactly what I need, and always at a fair price. Their staff are patient, more than willing to put up with my hardware ignorance. No up sell, no nonsense, always quick service. I've been here for mounting supplies, extra keys, etc. Only negative could be that the place feels messy, but I imagine some people find that charming, as if it was more neighborhood-y. read more

The staff is unhelpful to the point of being rude. They act as though they're doing you a favor by providing anything resembling assistance. They won't even provide a purchase receipt unless you ask for it. They sold me a product that didn't work and refused to refund my money. This is a shame because the store is well-stocked and convenient for those of us who live in the area. It would be great if someone who could at least pretend that customer service has some value would assume ownership of this store. Until then, don't shop here. read more

Sorry to see other such bad experiences. I didn't post this story for over three years. The guy made a key that didn't work. I came the next day and told the man who made the copy. He replied "You tell me I don't know what I'm doing, I've been making keys for over twenty years." I did not get a refund. The key is an older key that was difficult to make. I did get a working copy elsewhere and at less cost! read more

Come here if you like being treated like garbage! Okay, I'm sorry but I have been in this store twice and both times the same employee has been incredibly rude to me. I have told them what I need and they tell me I have quote "no idea what I'm talking about" and "whoever told me I needed that is an idiot" and I need to buy something else instead. The employee on both occasions has asked me a million questions about why I need something, what it's for, how I'm going to use it, etc. It doesn't matter why I need it. Just tell me where it is so I can buy it. I shop at hardware stores all the time and I do projects all the time. I know what I need. I don't appreciate the staff here thinking they know more than everyone else. The most recent time (and for sure the last time) I went in, after being spoken to rudely by the employee, I told them I was just going to buy what I wanted to buy. They gave me a nasty look and told me "fine" before walking away. Also I had to stand at the register for ten minutes to check out because the cashier was arguing with their mother on the phone. Horrible customer service and I will never shop here again. The name of the store suits itself. read more

This tiny hardware store has EVERYTHING, and the staff knows where to find it. Best of all, they never treat me like a "girl" for which they have my undying loyalty. Whoever said they're unfriendly is mistaken. They're plenty friendly in the traditional NYC style of helpful without the BS. read more

The owner sold me a drill, bit, gave me no receipt, an hour later I came back with it completely unused, he wouldn't refund it. AMAZINGLY helpful staff! April is the BEST! Very friendly neighborhood hardware store with an incredible selection of goods! Highly recommend them! A small plastic piece at the end of the bar that holds my clothes in my armoire broke and they happily worked diligently to melt a support piece to it, along with some super glue to solve my problem! read more

I would give 0 stars if I could... My wife went into Dick's Hardware with our 5 month old baby and asked if someone could help her buy a dish scrubber which were located downstairs. She was told that they were too busy. So she took our child out of the stroller and went down on her own. Frazzled from the experience, she left her wallet on the desk after purchasing the scrubber and left the store. Once my wife realized her mistake and retuned, the middle aged blonde woman working the register (Who I believe is the owner) told her that she had found the wallet and wanted a reward. After telling the woman that this kind of conduct is a bit uncalled for, especially by an employee of the store, the woman reluctantly gave it back to her. As my wife left the store she checked the contents of the wallet and found there was $20 missing. Ironically enough, 2 days later our credit card was compromised and was being used in Finland, Denmark and Trinidad. We live in the Financial District and have been going out of our way to spend our money on small businesses.. Especially those hurt by Hurricane Sandy. It's too bad the storm didn't shut them down for good. Hopefully another Hardware store or a Walmart will put them out of business soon. They are awful. This was only one of many times we have been treated poorly in this sub-par store. read more
