It peaked our interest and wouldn't you know it, there was an actual Farrow & Ball Paint Store 10 minutes from our apartment. I called on a Saturday late afternoon and spoke to Martin (Kesselman) explaining that we were interested in painting our house. Martin was able to steer us in the correct direction and made our vision come to life just by asking a few questions! With the distance between our project and Martin, there were many phone conversations, photos, and painting mistakes (I mixed the colours and made the bathroom look like a bandaid - not a good look!). Martin would set up times with us, and would want to see the progress and always asking for my thoughts and comments through the phases of the project. He was so patient responding to my frantic text and answering all my questions, and the why nots. Can't thank you enough for those calls! We now have a beautifully painted house (different colours in each room) that is warm and inviting (even with our shiny porcelain white floors). Thanks Martin, your passion for what you do really shows in how you are interested and invested in all your client's projects and helped me see through the incredible amount of colours (I wanted them ALL and I'm a white wall and ceiling person) to find the warm, calming palette which is now our home.

The employees are very helpful. I much prefer to visit this small business than the big box stores.

When I brought it back and explained what happened, the manager, Yvette, plugged it in, ran it for a few seconds with nothing attached, told me it was "fine" and treated me like I was making it up. A drill motor running with no load won't catch an issue that only appears under load, and a brand new drill that smokes is a serious fire hazard. It was completely negligent of Yvette to tell me to continue using the drill and not accept it as a defective return. This creates both a liability issue for the store and a safety issue for me. I raised these concerns and she was dismissive the whole time. I ended up leaving, calling Ace's customer service line and getting them on a three-way call with the store. The phone rep was great and easy to deal with. Yvette only agreed to take the drill back because I'd ordered it online through Ace for pickup, which meant the rep could force the return. Otherwise I doubt she'd have budged. She gave the rep attitude too. After she hung up, the rep apologized to me for how rude Yvette had been. I went back to the store and the return went through, but even when completing the return, the cashier was openly cold. I asked how her day was going, and she just said "fine," flat and unfriendly, without looking at me. Because of this experience, this location has lost my business. I won't buy from a hardware store that doesn't seem to take seriously the safety of the tools it sells or how it treats customers who flag a problem. I've still got the invoice, the return receipt, and Ace customer support case number if the owner wants to look into it.

What I was most impressed by was that the sales associate, who greeted me immediately upon entry, really listened to & attempted to solve the problem. I have to admit that Home Depot is my go-to, just because they have such a large inventory, but that large inventory is a double-edged sword. More often than not, I find that the sales associates are not cross-trained so, if the product or solution you're looking for is not in the section they have been trained to oversee, you're left with the options of seeking out sales associates in different departments to tell your tale of woe multiple times or assume they don't carry what you need & leave. All this to say, my visit to Blaustein's was a great reminder of the value of one's neighborhood hardware store.

You'll find the classics: chopsticks, ceramics, Lucky Cat statues, loose leaf teas alongside nostalgic snacks, fans, patterned paper, clothes/ qi paos, purses, and other beautifully designed everyday items. Everything is just so well curated, this is one of the best places to find a gift for someone when you don't know what you're looking for. Some of my favorite things to pick up here: Tiger Balm, lanterns, fans, incense sticks, tea sets, slippers. It's also still family owned and has been in operation for 55 years now (since 1971!). Over all, i like this place, feels like it instantly transports me to China with out leaving NYc.
