We are extremely disappointed with janovic. The first shades they installed under our skylights came crashing to the ground about 10 days after being installed. It was discovered they had forgotten to screw the shades in. A little over a year after having that issued resolved, one shade stopped working. They informed us we would be charged $450.00 for a service call because the year guarantee was up. They discovered a loose wire. Why wasn't that installed correctly in the first place? I just received a bill for $577.00. Not the $450.00 which they had informed me would be the charge. When they left this time I had to call them back because they left some wires exposed. Janovic's flagship store doesn't fail to impress. Sure you can buy Hunter Douglas for your windows and Benjamin Moore for your walls. But what distinguishes this store from your "friendly neighborhood" paint stores is the layout and presentation, and their superb customer service. I do not trust hardware and paint stores in general. They are like going to an auto body shop ... they (correctly) assume you do not know much about their products and services, and try to overcharge or up-sell. Not so with the staff at this store. If you are looking for heat-resistant paint for example, they will advise you on the best options based on price-performance, backed by their experience. Or if you are looking to seal your windows for the winter months, they will be happy to show you their assortment but also advise you to go elsewhere if that would get you to a better solution. I am all for mom-and-pop stores but my experience with hardware and paint stores in my neighborhood has been sketchy at best. Janovic's Soho location is a savior. read more

I needed acrylic glaze which is used for Strie paining. The gentleman knew exactly what I needed and was very helpful. I personally like using specialty stores as opposed to big box businesses, especially for paints and tiles. Coincidentally, there is a tile store near here which I will be visiting next. I will definitely return to this store. On a related note, if you have never tried to Strie I would highly recommend it. You can do opposing colors on the color wheel (like yellow and blue, or you can do opposing sheens like flat yellow and gold). It looks very classy when paired with good trim and/or crown molding. Basically you paint the wall with a base color. Then mix another color with the glaze, I would recommend 4:1 glaze to acrylic paint. It will slow down the drying time, and become translucent. Please note it drys darker and more pronounced then when you apply it. Roll out the glaze paint mixture from top to bottom in one roller sections, drag a Strie brush or a chip brush down it. To produce vertical "stripes". It will look like wallpaper. Or you can drag it left to right as well. read more

Overpriced Blind Installation I purchased 4 custom made Duette blinds from Janovic, pricey (almost $3,000) but my windows are very large. Watch out for expensive installation. Luckily I had been warned to take down any old brackets, but Kathryn surprised me with an exorbitant installation. A ladder--$50 extra--lucky I have my own. Charged by the size of the blinds, silly since no extra work is involved. One person does the installation, which took less than an hour. No travel time- I am just a few blocks away. Cost: over $200. Janovic certain got commission on the blinds. Bad feeling about installation, although the blinds are amazing. read more

We purchased Hunter Douglas window treatments from this location for our home. It was a large order (9 windows total). Elda was the sales rep who helped us, and I cannot speak more highly of her. (1) the cost was competitive. Elda got her regional boss to give us a discount which helped even more. (2) the installation was professional. Her guys showed up on time, took good measurements, and worked efficiently. (3) We had some trouble after the installation, with jamming of the cords. The design of the shades we selected, we learned afterwards, was somewhat flawed. Elda did not hesitate to send her crew back to our home on three different occasions to one by one, modify the shades (take them apart and re-assemble!) so that the problematic locking mechanism was removed. She never pushed back on redeploying her team, and didn't charge us a penny. We had to work with another installer for a different window treatment, and I cannot say our experience has been anywhere near as good as it has been with Elda from this location. read more

I especially love working with Judy Brand in the windows department at the SoHo location--she's exceptionally knowledgeable and conscientious, very friendly and helpful. With so many options to consider, some you might not even realize to ask about, it's great to work with someone who knows all the details. I've had Janovic measure for and install all the shades in our apartment, and it's always been a good experience. For installations, the technician Gary has stellar expertise and unbelievable patience. Recently I was looking for a replacement part no longer available from the manufacturer. Both Judy and Gary went far beyond the call of duty to figure out and track down a solution, and I was able to save a roomful of Silhouette shades that were otherwise in perfect condition.
