I don't know if there is some esoteric meaning hidden deep in the alignment of the stars or if it is just a quirky chance event, but this is the second time in a week that I have been to a small North Carolina establishment that has been open for precisely 99 years. Either way, I continued my test of Our State Magazine's best NC hot dog joints today by stopping in at Dick's Hot Dog Stand. I ordered two of the "Famous" hot dogs, which is basically all the way but sans slaw, so I asked them to add it. I also ordered one with mustard and onions. Famous Hot Dog (plus slaw): Over all, this is very good hot dog. The wiener is above average and is made better because they fry it on a flat-top grill. The chili had a mild flavor, and if you fed it to me blindfolded and asked me what it was, I would say "taco meat". But I love taco meat, so Dick's version of chili works well on this dog. The star of the show here was actually the slaw. It was nearly perfect--perfect consistency, perfect creaminess, and near perfect flavor. If it had celery seed, it would be world class. My only wish for their hot dog is that they would toast the bun. Hot dog with mustard and onions: it was very good, and there's nothing really to add here except to say they are not shy about putting mustard on a hot dog. So you might want to ask for "light mustard" if you're not a huge mustard fan. Sweet tea: very enjoyable, well above average--good tea flavor and sweetness. This place is very retro inside and heavily decorated with mostly sports memorabilia. The staff is very nice, accommodating, and engaging. As for Our State Magazine, they and I have had a tempestuous relationship when it comes to their list of hot dog recommendations. Sometimes I am aghast to the point of anger at some of their recommendations, and, equally important, some places they left off. Yet at other times it is love, assent, and Kumbaya. Working in Wilson and all I keep hearing go to Dicks hot dog. Well, I did the service was great quick. The ice tea was country sweet, I got onions ring fresh hot crisp. Now , the main reason was for the dog. The hot dog was grilled just enough of burnt on it, I got onions, mustard and chili. The chili was not that great it was to dry for my taste. Didn't like the texture of the chili. Sorry it's just go down well. I was so disappointed cause I really want chili. Plus, when you get a greasy bag it means good eats. Not Today. Once I removed the chili the dog was ready to take for a walk. I would love give it more stars but I end up throwing the hotdog away. read more

On a level with the great Coney Islands in Michigan, these guys even give Pontiac's legendary Walt's Coney Island a run for their money. Not only is the food delicious, but the atmosphere and staff are incredible as well. So when I saw there was a local hot dog place, Dicks's Hot Dog Stand, near Barton College, near where Jax was attending a baseball camp, I knew where we were going to lunch. ...I have to say to my friends and loved ones who are reading this, I only had 1 dog...promise. So, as always, I am setting expectations and ranking the place against other places like it. This place is a nice small, family run hole in the wall, inexpensive hotdog joint. ....who's parking lot was full when we showed up (good indicator of the place. They do have a good menu (see the picture) of grill food, not just hotdogs, so this is good, and I love the fact they put the sanitary rating of 95 right in front of your face as you walk in the door as the place is an older local dive. Fine for me, but not all go into a place looking for a hostess and modern looks. Let's talk service, it was exactly what I expected in a "walk in and order at the door" place. It was lunch, they were packed, so not much warmth and love from the older dude taking my order. He was hustlin' and had no time for small talk. It took me 12 minutes to get my 3 hotdogs, fries and two cokes. I don't get it. I probably never will. Locals rave about Dicks, so there's got to be something to it. I tried their dogs and burgers a couple times and found the whole experience underwhelming. Not horrible, and for the price, a fair bargain. But I honestly think Costco hot dogs, ($1.50 with a fountain drink) are better. The "chili" for their burgers and dogs is more like spicy canned cat food in orange grease. Pretty gross, to me. Perhaps it's like a trip down memory lane? Or like the unexplainable allure of Jack in the Box tacos? Continuing on my hot dog odyssey I drove from Cary to Wilson on a Saturday morning. Got into Wilson around 10:15 and figured that it's always a good time for a dog. Most of the other folks at Dick's were, understandably, enjoying breakfast but I ordered two dogs and fries. The service was good. The hot dogs were tasty as well. Good flavor on the dog. Nice chili and slaw. The fries were a major downer. I had to shower the fries with salt and pepper to get some flavor on them. Well, little old Wilson boasts an 89-year old hot dog stand, and anything that makes it 89 years has to be doing something right! What Dick's is doing is great simple, delicious Carolina-style hot dogs with chili, mustard, onions, and you can get a little cheese too. I tried two standard cheese dogs which featured a slice of cheese melted on the grilled dog, topped by a mild but flavorful all meat chili (no beans) with mustard and then some chopped onions. I also tried a plain basic cheeseburger, no chili, and liked it nearly as much as the delicious timeless dogs. The fries were pretty great too. The interior is a shrine to sports of all kinds and types with lots of memorabilia surrounding the handful of booths. The only off note was the soured sweet tea (a disappointment south of the Sweet Tea Line) but it was quickly and cheefully substituted for a Coke. Spring 16 bucks for a very nicely done tee shirt, 4 color on the back with a simple front. I've already had Bay Area strangers asking me to see both sides. From my step inside the restaurant I knew why I've always being told this is an "institution" in Wilson. The walls are decorated with pictures and autographs and memorabilia of yesteryear, sports figures and celebrities alike. Obviously, all that has been dwarfed by the aroma the waitress was bringing my way. Since it is a "Hotdog Stand" I just had to try out their signature. I ordered their regular dog and their "super" dog, which is quarter-pound link; of course I had all the fixings: chili, diced onion, relish, slaw. It was quite funny to see the lady giving me second look and asked, "can you finish all that and the fries?" "Look at me," I said, "I'm still a growing boy; and did you know I was three times the Nathan's hotdog eating champion?" Dick's has certainly become one of my favorite lunch place to visit for sure. This place is a great tourist attraction for the otherwise dull Wilson entertainment. It's a friendly little location located just outside downtown and close to Barton College. The food was good, and tasted great, but I feel it was something I could make at home. And to my surprise, their hot dog selection was very small and limited. This place is obviously an icon in Wilson. We came from Raleigh to try the hot dogs. Everyone was just as nice as they could be. Locals congregate here. The hot dogs are NOT good !! Hotdogs, burgers, and sandwiches since 1921. Small old fashioned sandwich shop with tons of interesting old photos of local ball teams and famous folks like Clint Eastwood, Bob Costas, and others. Super nice staff took the time to explain that they only accepted cash and that they did have an ATM outside. Said they were best known for the homemade chili and everyone typically got hot dogs or hamburgers but that for her the hamburgers were her particular favorite. I agree. We did the famous hot dog as is with mustard, onions, and the famous chili as well as one also topped with slaw and pickles. The chili was good, the texture of the dog's were fine, not as crisp as some but not mushy. I felt the hotdog with slaw was the best combination of flavors as the traditional one was in need of something more. Did a single cheeseburger with mustard, chili, and slaw. It was good, liked it better than the hotdogs and only thing I would change is I think the burger meat itself could use a little salt. We didn't order the fries but were given a few complementary as a taste. Next time I would do a double cheeseburger and the fries. We were there at 1 pm on a Friday and it took a decent amount of time to get our food which was a bit of a surprise however there were several other tables that had arrived just prior to us which could explain some of the wait. Well then, this is the place for you! Dick's Hot Dog stand has been around since 1921. They are a cash only (or local check) kind of place. It's a little mom and pop place with lots of pictures from famous people mounted on the wall. They have your pretty standard fair, Hot Dogs, hamburgers, and the like. You won't find HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING food here, but what you will find is consistently good, tasty local yummyness. The hot dogs are really very good. They're not overly cooked and rubbery like some places serve. The fries are your typical frozen crinkle fires....but crinkle fries always make me smile...i think they remind me of being a kid, and their onion rings are your typical frozen lightly battered onion rings. Which is nice since i don't care for heavy breaded onion rings. All of the food was good and a nice alternative to the cookie cutter fast food places you can find. When you walk in request a menu if it's your first time. You'll place your order, they'll make your food, and then you pay. Staff are friendly with your typical local folk charm. So, in summary: I wouldn't go miles out of my way to get here, but if i'm in wilson and want a quick, tasty lunch, this is an excellent option.....as long as i have some green backs on me. :D read more

Tea is fresh, service is pretty quick even when overflowing with people! Locals know the good places to eat...and this place brings em in! I always have a hard time rating places like this because my feelings about the experience may not match up with the actual flavor or quality. I definitely think the novelty of visiting this Wilson institution outshines the food a bit. But hey, its a hotdog stand, people! This isn't Flemings for goodness sakes how high are our expectations anyway? Our State magazine did an article on the hot spots in NC to get a hotdog, and Dicks was on their notable mentions list. I had already planned a day trip out to Wilson (or "Wiltson" if you wanna sound like a local), so I figured I should make this my lunch pick. Its been open for 95 years, and I was looking forward to going up to the counter and ordering "two all the way" like I knew what I was doing (onions, mustard and chili). I paid my $4 and change and took a seat at one of the bright lemon and lime colored vinyl diner booths. The hotdog was: good. Not spectacular, it didn't blow my face off. But I didn't expect it to, because ITS A HOTDOG. I enjoyed one at my booth and took the other to eat as I walked back downtown. Note other reviews that this is a cash only joint. read more

Meh! Well the food is below average. My best guess is that this place has history so people like it. I guess when you grow up eating something it just kind of becomes home. I can assure you I've had hot dogs that blow these away. The hot dogs themselves aren't bad, but the chili has no flavor and the slaw isn't the best. My girlfriend had a gyro. I ate about 1/2 of it, but the chicken was dry and the tzatziki was fairly flavorless. I'll not be back. read more

I drove 45 minutes out of my way to try Dick's Hot Dog Stand. I'd heard about it for years, and after a recent viewing of Our Vanishing Americana, my trip to Eastern NC was not going to be complete without checking this place out. First thing's first, cash only. As we were entering, a couple left to go get cash. A good sign that it was worth coming back to, or they just didn't know. The place is small. 12 tables or so with limited counter service. You can sit down and get waiter service or take out. They offer much more than just hot dogs, but on this first visit wanted to test the dawg, so tried 2 of their originals with fries. Hot dogs were good, juicy, chili left a little to be desired, but overall pretty good. Only hang up is why they come with chili, mustard, onions and no ketchup? Ketchup is served at the table. Crinkle fries were great. 2 of those meals (2 hot dogs, fries, soda) only set us back about $13 + tax. Having table service was worth it, and the ambiance is cool (walls filled with pictures, mortar shells from Presidential inaugurations). Parking is limited, but seems like people park on the street easily. We had to deal with 3 detours to find the place, and it doesn't stand out (it's tucked away in a residential neighborhood with no other retail/restaurants nearby). Would I drive out of my way to stop here? Prob. not, but I do think it's a great place and one that we should support. It's been here for 90+ years, let's help it stick around 90 more! read more

We took the advice of several of the locals and went here for the first time with my brother and his wife from Indianapolis. Wow, either the locals were trying to screw with the newcomers or they really have no taste buds. The hot dogs were not even as good as you can get from the Tobs or Swampdogs baseball stadiums and unfortunately you don't have alcohol to choke down the food with. The chilli that they put on the hog dogs has to be the most tasteless ground beef that I have ever eaten, for that matter I am pretty certain that it was the most tasteless meal I have ever eaten. The food here should be served as hospital food and I am afraid I might be insulting hospital food. Yes it is an experience, just not one worth repeating. Oh by the way, do not pay the 2.50 for a pickle platter, we assumed this meant fried pickles, nope, it was dill pickle slices picked right out of the brine of a five gallon jug. Yummy. read more

What exactly is the draw of this place? It's cramped and cluttered, and by and large, the food is only OK. I ordered onion rings, and at least *they* were actually quite tasty -- all FIVE of them. Yes, they consider FIVE onion rings to be a legitimate number for a side order. We were the only customers there, and the service was still less than attentive; the young employees were clearly more interested in chatting with each other than performing their jobs. This place manages to earn a second star by virtue of its perceived cleanliness, and because I try to reserve one-star ratings for those businesses that have induced anger, not simply disappointment. read more

What exactly is the appeal here? The hotdogs are average, boiled and served in a generic bun. The frenchfires are frozen crinkle cut, like the Ore Ida's one gets from the local Piggley Wiggly. When we tried breakfast, II had to run back home and get my own milk to put in my coffee, as they only had powdered creamer. The atmosphere is just perfect, however. It is the perfect microchasm of old school "Wiltson". Go here to get the flavor of the town, catch up on gossip, learn about the baseball museum and maybe get an omlete (but come early for breakfast). And bring your own milk. read more

First off, in this day and age, forcing me to use your ATM with a $3 fee instead of just accepting cards like a real restaurant is unacceptable. Cheese fries can only be described as white trash. Store bought crinkle fries with a slice of American cheese on them hardly count. Chili on the chili dog was almost definitely off brand Hormel. All in all a miserable experience and miserable staff.
