Men - if you find yourselves at Town Center with your girlfriend, wife, or mother-in-law - duck out from whatever god awful store you were dragged to and escape to Diebel's. After carefully studying the shopping geography of the area, I can write with confidence that this store was created for this exact reason, for no other sanctuary exists between Pottery Barn and Talbots. More specifically, in Hawthorne Plaza, it's a literal no-mans land, a vortex of interest for the male species, inarguably, in a strip littered with stores like Shop Beautiful, Style & Grace and Girl Boutique. Diebel's is the only resolution. Infact, I would wager that the men who started the business were former prisoners at Hawthorne laza while their wives shopped the hours away, driving them to their basic instincts of fight or flight - and they fought back - by opening the sportsmens store. Inside - it's all cigars and leather chairs and ivy green. The primary focus is the cigar room in the back - but you can smoke anywhere in the store - at least the owners do. Second to this is tribe pride of KU, MU, Royals and Chiefs memorabilia. And then there's golf, german mugs and shot glasses, chess boards and other manly things. The two burly men keeping shop stared at me like I was an alien when I first walked in, like, are you lost little girl? Then they reverted to the whole I'll-be-a-gentleman thing and they called me 'dear.' I didn't want to be a stick in the mud at the boys club so I left shorty after, but I got a good look around to conclude that if I smokes cigars - I might find this gallery a home away from home. read more

For example, where would you have an opportunity to meet (and visit at length with) Rocky Patel himself? I will always remember the 20 minute talk he gave to the attendees without notes about his personal story, how Rocky Patel cigars came to be and the incredible process by which each cigar is made. Now, when I relax with a Rock Patel premium cigar I appreciate the attention to detail and quality control he and his team of 300-plus put into that smoke. I have a long history and fond memories of Diebel's going back to Crown Center visits in high school. True story: On my 17th birthday in 1976, I dropped by Diebel's to buy some nice pipe tobacco (yes, attending a rural high school in Tecumseh, Kansas, I also chewed Red Man and Skoal) enroute to watch the Beach Boys and Doobie Brothers at Arrowhead. Now, that is going back a ways, yes? Sidebar: I was not the only concert attendee smoking a pipe, but I think I was the only one who was puffing Diebel's tobacco! Curt, Nancy and everyone at Diebel's on the Plaza and at Camelot are just top shelf folks with whom you naturally want to do business. These guys know cigars and they're all about customer service, which you don't see a lot anymore. I purchased cigars there and left my wallet by accident. Bryan tried to call me (they have my old number on file) and even emailed me. I realized later I had left my wallet there and called the store even though it was 6:20 (20 minutes after the store had closed). Ali answered the phone and told me about my wallet and said he was just hanging out late at the store in case I called. He offered to stay until I got back to the store and even offered to deliver it to my house! I got back to the store and Ali met me at the door with my wallet and a little something for my troubles. This is amazing customer service! Because of guys like Ali and Bryan, this is where I will buy cigars in Kansas City.
