More than a year ago, I contracted Atlantic Stereo in Costa Mesa to design and install a complete sound system as part of a major backyard renovation at my home. The project also included incorporating the system with my entire house and a new detached studio. On my very first visit, I met Tom, the owner. I explained what I had in mind, drawing on the sound system I built back in the days when Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop were in theaters-- something that used to shake the house. Tom listened, gave me a stern look, shook his head, and said, "We don't do it that way anymore." I was intrigued-and I'm glad I listened. Tom introduced me to Thomas, their VP Project Manager, who is absolutely fantastic. He designed a thoughtful, modern system, explained every step, and guided me through the entire execution with professionalism and patience. His expertise was clear, and he made the process seamless and enjoyable. The end result? A world-class sound system that fills our backyard, home, and studio with incredible audio. It's user-friendly, powerful, sounds amazing, and has become the envy of friends and neighbors. We couldn't be happier. During our consultation, I felt uncomfortable with how defensive the conversation became when we discussed obtaining multiple bids and comparing options. For a project of this size (34+ windows), I believe it's reasonable for homeowners to ask detailed questions, compare vendors, and carefully evaluate products, pricing, and installation approaches before making a decision. Rather than helping us understand the differences between available options, the conversation felt increasingly tense and dismissive, particularly when discussing our use of AI generated visuals to help refine the design direction we are trying to achieve. After scheduling a consultation, Gina later that same day decided not to take on the project, which is certainly her prerogative, and I appreciate that she communicated that before any work began. That said, the experience left me with the impression that questions, comparison shopping, and our personal decision making process were viewed negatively rather than as a normal part of a significant home investment.
