I've never had a bad time here. During the Blackpink concerts, I even met some people that traveled up from Brazil! I love other venues around the city(The Eastern, Masquerade, Roxy, A few others), but when groups grow, State Farm seems to be the place they play... until they're large enough to sell out the football stadium. State Farm Arena is good enough. There are things to do pre-show around the stadium (Coca-Cola Museum, Civil Rights Museum, Aquarium, Olympic Park). There are a few places to eat around but I'd suggest finding a place to eat before you head down to the arena. Out of all the NBA arenas I've been in, you can definitely see and feel the age of this arena. It gets the job done but it needs some upgrades. The staff is always nice and helpful here. I've started to see the setup in other places now but I seem to remember this arena being one of the first with one of those walk-in, it monitors what you take, and leave without any cashiers or employees being around. (Note: To get into the mini-market, you have to swipe card(puts a hold on your card for 25 dollars). If you spend under that, it'll adjust within days. If you spend over that, it'll also adjust upward. I was skeptical at first but it works flawlessly. Bmth sounded great. Twice sounded great. Blackpink sounded okay-ish... the sound was definitely off, muffled, and trying to be LOUD for part of their show. If one of your acts roll through, definitely check them out here. SPECIAL NOTE: Plenty of parking around but if you can, try buying parking in advance at the CNN lot. It usually sells out but if you park on that deck, it's much easier to get away from the traffic post-show.

The food is a different story (3/10)! It wasn't up to my standards but I didn't starve. I didn't bother eating it because the presentation was trash. My rating is for the atmosphere alone.

We arrived around 2:30 and was there until 9:00 pm for the taping of 2 shows. Not even a cracker was provided to eat! Cheap, ghetto and classless is what I call it! There is not even a vending machine. I never saw on any correspondence that taping would be that long and nothing to snack on available. Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey and Family Feud bring in toooo much money for not even a small pack of peanut butter crackers, a granola bar or even a 25 cent bag of chips to be served!!! I was totally disgusted and turned off by this because although it was a free taping----you wouldn't be able to do it without a live audience!! A little bit of appreciation for 7-8 hours of your time would have been nice. The staff seemed mean, over worked and underpaid. No smiles other than the production manager who had a curly natural fro ponytail. There was a heavyset black guy with a black winter beanie cap on that told my daughter the Smart Pop popcorn was for people who were there all day.! Well wtf do you call 2-9pm. Then to make matters worst, the staff and family members of the contestants are hot lunches in our faces. It was so classless! Steve Harvey and the hype man were so cool though and really provide for lots of laughs. Steve even left us on a spiritual note. He is definitely a natural comedian and speaker. Now that was a 5 star experience! Just Steve, hypeman, music, and the show itself 5 stars! The production company and the professionalism and hospitality of this place is a 3 and that's being nice. Overall, moving forward I would not recommend spending your precious off day setting around starving all day to see the show. I'll just watch from home but should you happen to read my review and go------ Eat a heavy meal before hand bc these cheap ass folks will not even provide a saltine cracker. If times are that hard they should just stop taping. I went to a few live taping and they at least provide light snacks via vending machine or free lay out. Despicable and changed the way I look at Tyler Perry Studios. Production company needs to get it together. Would never return and don't recommend!

    Atlanta Spirit

I've been meaning to write a review for the Atlanta Spirit ever since I read Amanda D's review from…read moreFebruary 2011. So far, the only two reviews on Yelp for the Atlanta Spirit are from Thrashers/hockey fans. I write this review primarily from a Hawks/basketball fan perspective, though I do think they royally screwed up with the Thrashers. How can a world-class, major sports city that's hosted the Olympics and just about every major sporting event lose an NHL team? Sad. In 2004, Time Warner sold the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers, and operating rights to Philips Arena to the Atlanta Spirit. The Atlanta Spirit is an ownership group comprised of seven businessmen, some of whom don't even live in Atlanta. The group originally had nine members, but one got kicked out (I'll get to that next) and another passed away (at age 83). In 2005, the Spirit immediately got off to a rocky start rebuilding the Hawks franchise by overseeing the trade between Atlanta and Phoenix. The Hawks traded Boris Diaw and two first round draft picks in a maximum salary sign-and-trade deal for Joe Johnson, who, at the time, was only the Suns' fourth-best player (behind Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, and Shawn Marion). I'm a huge NBA fan and when that deal was proposed, I remember thinking how ridiculous it sounded. Joe Johnson was a good player, but no way was he worth max dollars and building a franchise around. At least one owner of the Spirit agreed and it was Steve Belkin, the governor of the group. His disagreement with the Spirit and Hawks management eventually went to the courts, where Belkin was exiled from the group (two other owners picked up his share). Then-Hawks GM Billy Knight wouldn't even shake Belkin's hand afterwards. The trade was eventually consummated and so began the Joe Johnson era in Atlanta. I can see the Spirit's thinking -- no NBA superstar wanted to play in Atlanta. We'd just come off six straight losing seasons, including a league-worst 13-69 in 2004-05. The Spirit had to overpay for someone to come here. In the eight seasons since the Spirit have owned the Hawks, the team has made the playoffs five times. We just could not get over the "hump." The hump being out of the second round. In Atlanta, Joe Johnson became a six-time All-Star. Josh Smith won the dunk contest in 2005. In 2007, we drafted Al Horford. He became a two-time All-Star. We took the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics to seven games in an exciting playoff series in 2008. Jamal Crawford won 6th man of the year in 2010. So there were definitely some highlights with this group. Joe Johnson, however, was not a superstar. He was and is a very good player, just not a cornerstone. You can't blame him for signing a maximum contract if a team is willing to offer it. In 2008, ownership did the right thing by firing Billy Knight, but his replacement, Rick Sund, signed Joe to a 6-year, $120MM contract in 2010. We would be stuck with Joe forever! (Or would we...?) Speaking of Billy Knight, he made one of the worst draft mistakes ever, by drafting Marvin Williams with the No. 2 pick in 2005 over Chris Paul and Deron Williams (taken with the next two picks). At the time, the thinking was, Marvin Williams would turn out to be the best overall player from that draft class. We already had a ton of forwards, though, and we badly needed a point guard! June 28, 2005 was the day that could have changed the Hawks franchise for the better for decades to come. Instead, we got Marvin, followed by Shelden Williams the next year. The Atlanta Spirit, as a partnership, have a hard time gaining the support of the fans. NBA teams like the Mavs (Mark Cuban), the Lakers (Jerry Buss), the Heat (Micky Arison), the Spurs (Peter Holt), and even now the Nets (Mikhail Prokhorov) have visibly passionate owners who genuinely care about their teams and make an effort to reach out to the fans and local community. Even Cavs owner Dan Gilbert made headlines with his emotional letter to Cleveland fans after LeBron James took his talents to South Beach. I wouldn't be able to pick out any of the Atlanta Spirit owners in a lineup. I'll admit Atlanta is a fairweather sports town. I'm not sure completely why that is, but I know part of the reason is because this is a transplant city. I, myself, moved here from out-of-state and adopted the Hawks as my "#2" team behind the Spurs, who I grew up cheering for. Last month, the Spirit made a great hire in former Spurs VP of Basketball Operations, Danny Ferry, as the new GM of the Hawks. In less than two weeks, Ferry has already done what most thought was impossible: he traded away Joe Johnson's albatross contract (to Brooklyn) and Marvin Williams (to Utah, for a PG no less). A new era is underway in this town and the rebuilding process is swiftly on-going as I write this review. Atlanta has the makings of a great NBA city. If the Spirit can change the culture, the city will embrace the Hawks.

Wow, what a disaster. I'm not a hockey fan, I'm writing about their Hawks ownership. They already…read morescrewed it up with the Thrashers, and they've been screwing up the Hawks since they took it over. Most of what I'm going to write is going to be a rehash of what I wrote for my Atlanta Hawks review. At that time, I didn't think of reviewing Atlanta Spirit. But I have to blam Atlanta Sprit for most of the blame. We all know their dumb moves to handicap the Hawks franchise: * Signing Joe Johnson to a ridiculous contract. * Drafting Marvin Williams before Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Andrew Bynum, David Lee, or Danny Granger. * Making Hawks a treadmill team for over about a decade. Paying Joe Johnson 20million/year seems like their biggest mistake. He's a decent player, but not max level guy. It hindered the franchise from making any moves in the free agency. Marvin Williams also seemed like a decent player. But he was not worth the #2 pick. Hawks needed a good PG, and they could've had Deron or Chris Paul. But nope, Hawks loved their SFs. Almost a decade later, they righted their wrongs and hired Danny Ferry. He undid all of Hawk's past mistakes. I don't know how Danny Ferry will turn out, but he's already making a bunch of good moves. Just for that, I'll give the Spirit Group 1 more star.

On September 16, 2016, Kevin G left a review here on Yelp for Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM)…read more That day was the school's white coat ceremony for the class of 2020. His daughter and my fiancee were part of the same ceremony almost four years ago. On that day, he said, "the long journey begins." Today, May 16, 2020, that journey has ended and another one is about to begin (residency). Today, the 36th commencement exercises for Morehouse School of Medicine were held and the class of 2020 graduated. The students are now alumni and are officially MDs (medical doctors) from this day forward. Congratulations to all! I met my fiancee, Rebecca, when she had just moved back to Atlanta to begin orientation at MSM. Yep, I started dating her just as she was starting medical school. Against her mom's advice and against my friends' advice (friends who were currently dating medical residents), we decided to date and look at us now -- she's graduated, magna cum laude I might add (I'm fully aware I'm shamelessly bragging here), and we're about to get married and begin the next chapter of our lives. We did it! Rebecca is one of two graduates from MSM's class of 2020 who matched with residency programs in ophthalmology. She matched at UNC Chapel Hill and begins her four-year program there next month. To medical students considering dating and people who aren't med students who are considering dating one, my message to you is: It can be done. Before meeting Rebecca, admittedly, I didn't know anything about MSM. These last four years, I've learned a lot. The school feels very close-knit and like a community or family. Everyone seems very supportive of one another. The current president and dean of MSM (since 2014) is Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, an obstetrician and gynecologist. I like her because she's a fellow proud Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She replied to my tweet day on Match Day, the day med students across the country learn which residency programs they matched to, March 20, 2020: https://twitter.com/MSMPres/status/1241056743850991616. MSM Class of 2020 had a 98% match rate which was above average for all US med schools. Great job, Morehouse! MSM is a relatively young school, established in 1975. Since 1981, the school became independent of Morehouse College. Understandably, I and probably most other people, incorrectly thought the two schools were tied together, when in fact they are not. MSM's campus is located just southwest of downtown Atlanta in the part of town known as Atlanta University Center. It's where four HCBUs are located: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. In its relatively short history, MSM has produced or been affiliated with some of the top health officials in the country. They include: * Louis Sullivan, MD - 17th Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services under President George HW Bush (1989-1993) * David Satcher, MD - 16th Surgeon General of the United States under Bill Clinton and George W Bush (1998-2002) and 13th Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under Clinton (1993-1998) * Eric Holder, JD - 82nd United States Attorney General under Barack Obama (2009-2015); Holder is former vice chairman of MSM's board of trustees * Regina Benjamin - 18th Surgeon General of the United States under Barack Obama (2009-2013); Benjamin was also an MSM trustee Both Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Satcher spoke at today's ceremonies. Like other schools across the country, from high schools to graduate institutions, MSM's festivities went virtual. I was impressed with what they pulled off. It was quite the production and nicely done, complete with interactive capabilities. You can view the virtual commencement on MSM's website at https://www.msm.edu/commencement/. Along with Drs. Sullivan and Satcher, there was a special musical performance by John Legend (and also a message from him: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261692254160379907) and special greetings from former Atlanta Mayor and US Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-SBlHFFPgI). Heck, even Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade got in on the action: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261676503940698112. And so did Killer Mike: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261678978210902016. Morehouse School of Medicine will forever be a part of our lives and we - especially me - are thankful they gave Rebecca a chance. Thank you, MSM, for producing great doctors and for following through on your objectives, some of which include increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce and focusing on helping people of color and those less-privileged. To conclude, Rebecca's biggest takeaway from her experience at MSM is: "MSM provides a nurturing environment that really helps students become the best versions of themselves." :)

Dr. Rice and other board members refused to properly investigate this matter. Dr. Rice did not implement any safety measures. I believed Dr. Rice and other Grady Board members did not care. However, resigning from the board did not preclude Dr. Rice from her responsibility concerning this issue. I ( heart patient) was sexually assaulted by Grady Memorial Hospital's male nurse (the sexual predator was not assigned to my room) while I slept in bed. Grady's administrators and legal team immediately attempted to cover up the assault. Grady administrators knew the sexual predator had committed this horrendous act against other hospital patients in the past. Grady's administrators removed the surveillance camera (located near my room door) shortly after the assault and refused to produce the video footage. Grady's doctors and nurses assigned to my care were outstanding. However, a few bad apples will not destroy Grady's prominent legacy. I pray no hospital patient ever experiences the physical and psychological trauma I endure daily. However, I am looking forward to my day in a Fulton County courtroom.

The new facility is sparkling and definitely worth visiting if you haven't seen it yet and becoming a member if you swim work out regularly. We paid about $250 for the family to join for the year and the bonus is that it gives the whole family access to all Atlanta public pools. The building is very open, bright (lots of natural light come in through the glass), and beautifully built. While ATL isn't the Northeast, winter is still somewhat more of a period of hibernation for a lot of people and the opening of this center provides a very nice public option for continuing to be active. It seems like they offer a wide variety of classes and activities for kids. While I can't speak to the basketball gym, workout facilities, and indoor running track on the second floor, the pool is great. It's helped our toddler develop an appreciation for the water and we haven't even tried their infant swim program yet. Some highlights of the pool are that the water is very warm, they have a beach front walk-in, a separate family changing room, a variety of aquatic toys for kids to enjoy, and a few fun sprinkler type poles in the pool. For parents looking to entertain their kids this could be a great drop-in option too at just $5 a visit I believe. My only complaints are 1) We've waited months to get our membership cards and the machine that prints them is always down or unavailable for some reason. This is obviously not such a big deal but 2) As this "undiscovered" gem is no longer so undiscovered, we've seen more and more swimmers come to the pool and it can be difficult to find a free lane to swim in now (especially around peak hours weeknights after work). This may just be what happens as you become a victim of your own success. The pool is huge but it's unfortunate that the way they built it the lanes cannot be expanded or added easily because the free swim section has a giant physical barrier from the lanes part.
