The Atlanta Falcons are my favorite NFL team…read more Born and raised in North Carolina, the Carolina Panthers were my first favorite team as soon as they were formed in 1995. The Panthers had immediate success in only their 2nd season (1996 season), making it to the NFC Championship game where they eventually lost to in-his-prime Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in January 1997. Just a couple years after that, it was the "Dirty Birds" who made noise. The Falcons won the NFC Championship in January 1999. They went on to lose to John Elway and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII. That Falcons team, coached by Dan Reeves, with players like future-hall-of-famer Morten Andersen, running back Jamal Anderson, and corner Ray Buchanan, made an impression on me. Since middle school (maybe earlier), I've always rooted for underdogs. I've never been a bandwagon fan and rarely root for dynasties or favorites unless I truly liked that team. In the 90s, I never rooted for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Packers, or Broncos. That's what I liked about Atlanta and Carolina. They were underdogs and I wanted to see them make history. I distinctly remember talking about both the Falcons and Panthers in high school. Kerry Collins and the Dirty Birds were hot topics at the time. To this day, both the Falcons and Panthers, fellow members of the NFC South, have yet to win a Super Bowl. Both teams have made it to the Super Bowl twice. The Panthers were able to do it in a lot less time than the Falcons, whose first season was in 1966. But enough about the Panthers - I'll review them separately. I moved from North Carolina to Atlanta in 2000 to attend Georgia Tech. It didn't take long for me to switch allegiances, at least as far as my No. 1 teams were concerned. I became a bigger NFL fan after I moved to Atlanta. Mike Vick had something to do with that. Also being a college football fan, I was well aware that Mike Vick was one of the best players in the country when he played for Virginia Tech (1999 and 2000). Georgia Tech was supposed to play Mike Vick's Virginia Tech team to start the 2000 season (the fall of my freshman year), but the game got cancelled due to lightning and was never rescheduled. Anyway, the Falcons drafted Vick with the 1st overall pick in the 2001 draft. The rest is history. Vick was the starting quarterback for the Falcons for the majority of the 2001-2006 seasons. The Falcons were mostly mediocre during those years. Regardless, Vick was an incredibly popular player and a regular fixture on SportsCenter because of his exciting style of play as the NFL's top dual-threat quarterback. It certainly got me interested more in the Falcons and the NFL, so much so that I purchased Madden NFL 2004 for the PlayStation 2. Vick was on the cover. It was awesome to have a Falcons player on the cover of the newest Madden game at the time. I played several seasons as the 2003 Falcons. I got to know the NFL rosters really well that way, especially the rosters of the NFC South: Falcons, Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - the 2002 season champs, and the New Orleans Saints. It was a lot of fun rushing with Vick in that game, the then-modern-day equivalent of Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl. The top receivers were Peerless Price, Brian Finneran, and Alge Crumpler (tight end) with starting running back Warrick Dunn and backup TJ Duckett. One Christmas Eve around that time (mid-2000s), I made eye contact with Warrick Dunn as he was headed to a set of escalators at Lenox Square with several shopping bags in-hand. He was by himself and it looked like he had just finished doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. Alge Crumpler played college football at North Carolina and was a regular on 790 The Zone, the sports radio station I listened to at the time. I now listen to 92.9 The Game, which is currently the official station of the Falcons. Since 2004, the Falcons' radio play-by-play announcer has been Wes Durham, who was the play-by-play announcer for Georgia Tech football and/or men's basketball games from 1995 to 2013. Of course, Arthur Blank and Matt Ryan have defined the modern era of the Falcons. Blank has owned the Falcons since 2002. He once walked right by me at an Atlanta United open training in 2018. Ryan has been the starting QB since 2008. I first saw Ryan in-person when he led Boston College to a road win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. That was 2007 and he was a star senior at BC. I was a big fan of Dan Quinn, the Falcons' head coach from 2015 to 2020. I met Coach Quinn and took a picture with him at a Georgia Tech men's basketball game in 2019. He was just as nice in-person as he was on TV and radio. Of course, Quinn led us to Super Bowl LI in February 2017. To this day, that 2016 Falcons season remains the most memorable and special to me. Matt Ryan was both the NFL MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year that season. North Carolina grad Arthur Smith has been the Falcons head coach since 2021.

Water and Powerade is super $$. The place is clean . And the staff professional. It's nice to be back at this stadium again.

It is certainly not the Benz, but I actually tend to enjoy these games more. There is no bad seat in the house, and you are SO close to all the action. The players can *actually* hear you if you yell loud enough. There are a couple of food vendors with basic stadium food, and sometimes they bring in food trucks or other vendors in during events. They sell beer, wine, and mixed drinks. At the last match there were also selling shots of liquor for $9. The lines do not move quickly like at the Benz, so patience is key. My major gripe is parking. It can be a pain, and the people directing traffic & taking payment do not always seem to be on the same page or know what they are doing. I recommend paying for parking in advance, and that helps keep people moving. Kennesaw does have a clear bag policy. I find it easier to just bring my basics and leave the purse behind. I appreciate Kennesaw hosting ATL UTD when the Benz is booked & look forward to our next match here in March.

Like the Seattle Sounders, Atlanta United is honestly one of the great success stories in North American football aka soccer. I would say that even more so because they managed to penetrate a market that usually isn't that great, as in, Atlanta sports, nah. The city is a transient city, a hipster city, a music city, a culture city, a liberal city, and a booming city, and none of those things support sports teams the way that, say, Pittsburgh does. All this time, Atlanta was begging for some kind of a less-All-American sport that was inclusive of everybody, the NFL is popular here but not like it is in a Dallas or a Philly even, and the city is a little more left-wing. The sports desires of ATL (parts of ATL anyway) showed up in the form of Atlanta United, who have been able to absolutely pack Mercedes-Benz stadium the same way the Falcons do (or moreso), in a way that only the Seattle Sounders can really be compared to. Bravo. Most clubs need to get into their own stadium so they don't have 3/4 of the stadium empty, whereas Atlanta United do just fine filling up an NFL stadium. It's remarkable and amazing. It helps that they were one of the best teams from day one. Hiring the best coaches (Martino anyway, less so DeBoer), and doing an amazing job all along. We're so proud of them and we're so happy with what they've managed to do. ATL is our southern home away from home, shared capital of the south (with Houston, not with Dallas). We will probably always be fans of them because of what they've managed to do and we're very proud as I said. I hope that they're able to sustain it and I think that they will do somehow. After LAFC, maybe alongside the likes of Toronto FC, Montreal, Sounders, and Red Bull NY, this is one of our fave teams in MLS.

They do a demonstration before every bout, and there are team members walking around taking questions from the audience during the bout to make sure everyone understands what's going on. Bouts are BYOB, but you can't bring any glass. There are usually snacks for sale outside, but I personally enjoy bringing a corndog from Palookaville. Pro tip: go to the OTHER side for a better chance of getting bleacher seats.

On their website, I clicked the "Buy Tickets - Derby + Afterparty" button listed directly under the September 26 event. Unfortunately, that button incorrectly directed me to the ticketing page for their August 22 event, and I ended up purchasing a $43.20 ticket for the wrong date. I noticed the problem and contacted Atlanta Roller Derby asking them to simply transfer my ticket to September 26. I wasn't initially asking for a refund--I just wanted the ticket corrected. I received no response. I followed up again and contacted multiple published addresses for the organization, including ticketing and members of their team. Still no response. The August 22 event eventually passed without the ticket being used, and because I still wanted my sister to be able to attend the September 26 event, I had to purchase another ticket for the correct date. What makes this particularly frustrating is that the incorrect link on their website was subsequently fixed, yet nobody ever responded to my emails, transferred my ticket, or refunded the $43.20. Websites have mistakes. That part is understandable. What isn't understandable is completely ignoring a customer who promptly reported the problem, explained exactly what happened, and initially asked for something as simple as moving the ticket to the correct event. My sister is a huge supporter of Atlanta Roller Derby, which is why I wanted to support the organization and buy this for her in the first place. It's incredibly disappointing that an organization she supports handled a simple ticketing problem this way. Instead of resolving a straightforward mistake, I ended up paying twice and received absolutely no customer service despite repeatedly trying to contact them.

So I got to go to Atlanta Social for free. If I had paid, I would've been disappointed. We went at 6:30, and the game started an hour later. Getting there an hour early was definitely the move. It wasn't crowded, we had our pick of tables, and the lines weren't long. As it got closer to game time, the lines got pretty long. The food was okay. The good: chips and guacamole, pizza, dessert bar (cookies, ice cream with choice of toppings, some trifle thing). The not-so-good: "tomahawk ribeye," quesadilla. It was very average and not worth the price that I've heard people have paid. Free wine and beer, but liquor is an up-charge. The service was great. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, and they were so quick to clean our tables and take empty plates. They were also good about refilling empty dishes. I was a little surprised that, given the times, it was still buffet style. I would've been more comfortable had we gone down the line and they served us, rather than everyone touching the serving utensils. I would only go back to Atlanta Social if I'm not paying. If your company is paying, go for it. If not, don't waste your money.
