I have used DiMare Pastry Shop for all of our desserts for years, and just recently used them for my daughters wedding cake. I have to say so many guests said that this was not only the best wedding cake they ever ate, but literally the BEST CAKE they ever ate. It was amazing. I've purchased cakes from here off the counter on and off and they were always great and fresh. Couldn't for the life of me remember why we haven't ordered birthday cakes from here except for that one time a few years back. Why did we stop? So this year I decided to order the birthday cake and it hit me when I opened the box! THIS PLACE GOES CRAZY ON THE FOOD COLORING. Had I remembered that this is the place that puts gobs and gobs of food coloring on cakes I would have ordered from our regular place. Couldn't they give you a warning that this cake has a TON of food coloring so maybe you should tone down the look? That stuff can't be good for you especially since we had trouble washing the color off our fingers with soap. Fake Italian American bakery in the 'burbs. The large chocolate chip cookies taste standard and mass produced. The raspberry jam filled cookie had an artificial lemon taste that overpowered the cookie with a chemical flavor. Horrendous. This bakery gets raves in the local area for their birthday cakes. It may be okay by Connecticut's lousy standards for pastries and to Connecticut residents who really don't know any better, but if you're from New York and used to a great bakery over there, then this will simply be nauseating. I've purchased cupcakes for one grandson's birthday celebration at school and was disappointed in the cake. Bland and dry. Thought I try one more time and I ordered half a sheet cake for a combined birthday celebration. The cake looked wonderful but the actual cake portion was again bland and dry. So bland that the contrast to the sweetness of the frosting and filling made the cake taste terrible. Almost as if someone was using powdered eggs and no vanilla. read more

On my way to and from school (drive from philly to boston) I always stop at Dimare's for a treat. It's conveniently located right off exit 5 on rt 95 and is such a better pit-stop than those conventional rest stops on the highway. The last time I stopped I got an apple turnover and it was AMAZING. I also love the cookies and other treats. While I was there I overheard a woman asking about a cake for her anniversary. The staff was very nice to her and she seemed very happy. I would tell anyone traveling through Connecticut to stop here on their way! Absolutely horrible! I purchased a tiramisu cake and it was tasteless. No coffee flavor and must have used cool whip...tasted like sweet lard like Crisco. There was also no mascarpone used at all. When I went back to get a refund the manager took a big hunk of it with her fingers, tasted it and said there was nothing wrong with it and refused to refund the money. I have heard great things about this bakery and recently had a chance to try it out. The best way of putting things for me, is that the service was just as bland as the cookies. Maybe because it was later in the evening, but for whatever reason, the employee wasn't very helpful or didn't seem very happy to be there (I get it that this might not be your ideal job, but take some pride in your work). I don't quite understand how these cookies could have been passed off as 'good' by ANYONE'S standards. The were totally stale, completely turned into dust upon biting into one, and they were absolutely flavorless. But hey, it could have been a bad batch.. I only sampled about 8 or 9 different types of cookies, so you never know! I also picked up a couple of pies that turned out to be quite good, so not all hope was lost. I feel bad writing this review but the quality of this place has been dwindling over the years. I stopped getting pastries like cannolis or eclairs because the cannoli cream was subpar. Now their butter cookies are flavorless and taste more like shortening than butter... which is also why they're more white than yellow. The pignoli cookies are dry and I know almond paste and pine nuts can be expensive so the prices keep going up. I know the pastry business is hard and times are rough with the world seeming like it's on a diet, but an authentic Italian pastry shop requires high standards. Blueberry pies on sale this month. I tried one bite and am pretty shocked, almost no blueberries at all - just a gelatinous filling that is purple and tastes like blueberry. I can't understand why this bakery wins awards. Do people in Greenwich not have taste buds? I love sweet pea in Old Greenwich. Also love Black Forest bakery in Greenwich. I have been going to this local pastry shop for most of my life. The cookies are still the best in the area and their cakes and mini pastries are fantastic too. If you plan to get something there for a holiday you will have a long wait in line so it's best to order over the phone and just drop by to pick it up. Even if you do this you may still have a long wait in line but you will be able to get out faster. read more

I've been going to DiMares since I was little in the 70's. My mom said the cake for my Christening came from DiMares, and I was so pleased to also get my wedding cake from here. A devil's food cake with cannoli cream filling - why didn't I think of this? It's my 2 favorite desserts, put together into one. I refused to save the cake topper - the husband and I think that's gross, so we left it at my parents house. They ate the entire thing in 36 hours. I'll need to get them to the treadmill asap! We have been ordering desserts from this place in Greenwich for over 10 years. Every year we order cupcakes for my daughters birthday, in addition to cakes, pastries, and cookies for other occasions. Never have been so disappointed as I have been this year. Is it possible that ownership has changed hands? Staff has been incredibly rude and not helpful or knowledgeable in the least. A few months back, I asked for a nurses decoration to be drawn on a cake - first they tell me they can't do it - I said no problem, can you just write on the cake? When the girl brought it back out to me, someone decided to attempt a drawing of a stethoscope (mind you, I just asked for a bandaid) - what they gave me looked more like fallic symbol. What an embarrassment to my guests. Yesterday I picked up 4 dozen mini cupcakes for my daughter to bring to school today. This was not our first time ordering their mini cupcakes. What they gave us looked more like extra mini muffins you would buy from a super market. To add insult to injury, they put them in a box with a flimsy lid ( not one you would use for something with frosting) and another small one on top. The frosting not only was crushed but some of the cupcakes had tipped over. Never have received cupcakes in this type of packaging before. We tasted one and they tasted old and stale - I'm embarrassed to send them to school with her today. I would have been better buying something commercial from my local supermarket. Again, can't say enough how disappointed I am in the lack of quality and professionalism I have seen this past year. We will definitely be looking for a new bakery. read more

I've been here on numerous occasions to pick up cakes, cookies, and cannolis. They have a wide selection at the storefront which is always good for last minute needs. The cannoli and a crowd pleaser for those who enjoy cannolis and is definitely a different cake than offered at many other local bakeries. Disgusting cookies and larger pastry shells. Failed my "cooked pastry water test" where after eating the pastries, the fat remains at the top of the palate while drinking with filtered water. They apparently use grease or lard in their pastries. It is disgusting and a shame. This fat contributes to obesity and hardening of the arteries. read more

I will NEVER step foot in DiMare Pastry Shop again! My family celebrated my mother's 80th birthday yesterday. Our mother has a gluten intolerance and we have purchased the gluten free cupcakes at DiMare's many times. When purchasing yesterday, the very rude girl told me the cupcake was baked "today". Well it was most definitely not fresh. In fact the cake was hard and the frosting too. This is not the first time we have gotten old/stale cupcakes. I wish there was an option to choose 0 stars. I had the worst experience with this bakery this weekend. I purchased a birthday cake for my sister on Sunday morning. That afternoon, after following their instructions to leave the cake at room temperature for about an hour, I served the cake to family and friends. No one seemed to be enjoying or eating more than a bite of the cake. It wasn't until I tried it myself and said I am so sorry the cake is stale, that my friends and family admitted it was, but they didn't want to say anything. Needless to say it was very disappointing to serve a cake that had clearly been days old and was dry and stale. I called and spoke with the manager to tell her this and request my money back, she was slightly condescending to me on the phone and told me with an attitude "we didn't do this intentionally, we have been in business for a long time" Well that doesn't change the fact that you sold me an old stale cake. She finally agreed to refund my money after trying to get me to settle for store credit. I told her I didn't want store credit since I won't be buying anything there again. The worst part was when I went to the store to return the cake and get my money back. The girl working there tried the cake, rolled her eyes at me and said "there's nothing wrong with the cake you just don't like our cake" Well she must not have tried that many cakes because 6 people agreed the day before that the cake was stale and nobody ate more than a bite. Then she tried to give me back less then what I paid for the cake. When I told her what I paid she said numerous times "no you didn't pay that much for the cake". So either she was trying to rip me off or she doesn't know what they charge for their products. Then she started raising her voice at me and told me she didn't want to deal with this anymore and basically told me to leave. I have never experienced such poor customer service in my life. This place is not worth it, save your money and go to a better quality bakery where they treat you with respect. As convenient as this bakery is to where I live, I will never buy another thing here and will go out of my way to get a better product and actual customer service. read more

My husband and I just returned from visiting family in Wakefield, RI. We stopped for gas and a "walking break" in Riverside, off I-95 North. I found DiMare's and went in for an Italian Pastry to take to my brother-in-law, Sfogiatelles. They didn't have, but they DID have a "Lobster Tail" - same pastry but different filling, a creamy, smooth canolli filling with chocolate chips. Anyone familiar with Italian pastries knows "of what I speak". They were divine. Bakeries are not a part of the Southern culture and we miss them dreadfully. I wanted to pick up this lovely little gem of a shop and take it home with me. Found their website and can email my nieces so they can now go and obtain on their own. You can rest assured we will be stopping off at Exit #5 for another visit to DiMare's on our next trip in the spring to beautiful New England. Yum. And by the way, since my favorite seafood is Lobster, this pastry fit me to a tee. I got TWO wonderful lobsters during this trip. Dimare has secured a long distance fan. read more
