*Sigh...* This wasn't the start of my birthday weekend that I was hoping for. Since moving to the Towson area about six months ago, I've been trying to find a good Chinese restaurant that was closer to me. Unfortunately, after visiting Ding How...I'm still looking. I should've paid attention to the three star rating, but I didn't. The food looked kind of decent and seeing that the restaurant had a parking lot was actually a plus for me (restaurants with street parking stress me out). Anyhoo, I looked through the menu for some tasty items to try. I had a taste for shrimp egg foo young (with fried rice- remember this), and some kind of steamed dumplings. This restaurant had something called Wasabi Shumai Dumplings. The paper menu states that they are $8.95. Online, it says that they are $9.95. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the online prices are most up to date. I had some delicious dumplings at other restaurants before, and hoped that these would be tasty. Spoiler alert...they most definitely were NOT! I called my order and took the 15 minute drive to the location. When I arrived, I was greeted by a nice woman that I assumed took my phone order. She explained to me that she had to give me half spicy dumplings and half regular. I wasn't quite sure what that meant, but I assumed that they ran out of one or the other and had to make some provisions to the appetizer. She apologized and said she should have called me to see if it was okay. Honestly, that would've been appreciated, but I never had these dumplings before, so I didn't know what to expect. My total came to $27.45 for dumplings and shrimp egg foo young with fried rice. Now, most places don't charge extra for fried rice and if they do, it's for a dollar. This place charged me four dollars extra for fried rice. Going against my gut, I accepted the extra charge. With a five dollar tip (which I immediately regretted), my total came up to $32.45. I honestly should've omitted the tip after I was told that there was a change to the appetizer without me being notified. However, as a consumer, I try my best to tip appropriately. Anyways, after making my way home, I started taking everything out of the bag. I took the dumplings out first. The container felt a bit light. Nothing prepared me for what I saw. I stared down at the most pitiful appetizer I've probably ever seen. Six small, sad, MEASLY dumplings scattered over a lifeless bed of what looked like white cabbage. Some type of brown sauce carelessly splashed over the dumplings made everything look even worse. I was immediately irritated, thinking that I should've chosen an egg roll or something less offensive. Ten dollars for an appetizer that could've, no SHOULD'VE been for free. I tasted one, and was just so extremely underwhelmed. It tasted like mush. It was supposed to be shrimp and pork. All I could taste was a heavy flavor of scallions. The "spicy" dumplings had chunks of ginger, which was overpowering and overall just not good. The shrimp egg foo young was honestly pretty good. The flavor was there and the brown gravy was what I was used to. The fried rice, although a bit dry, also had a good flavor. My gripe with this particular dish was the size of the shrimp. In the picture that I posted, you can see that the shrimp is smaller than my fork! These were baby shrimp- something I just never seen before when eating Chinese takeout. I couldn't see the shrimp right away because they were hidden inside the egg patty. This meal was a true disappointment & it's one of the reasons why patrons are choosing to cook more and more at home. I like to eat out every now and then, but this experience put a bitter taste in my mouth- literally and figuratively. The price gouging is ridiculous. I give two stars for the egg foo young. Minus three stars for that audacity of an appetizer and how much they charged me for it. read more

Fresh, delicious Chinese food. Definitely not your typical salty Chinese food, which made it taste clean and "healthier". While I have only gotten takeout, the service is always perfect and quick. Our group of eight met at Ding How for dinner last night. Ding How does a huge carry out business. We were lucky enough to have the restaurant to ourselves, and it was perfect! As seniors, we sincerely appreciated the quiet setting. We are able to converse easily. Helen, our server, took excellent care of each one of us. We are always impressed when the server keeps our orders straight. We also liked that the restaurant is BYOB with no corkage fee. Now to the food - they started us off with complimentary wonton crisps with a sweet sauce for dipping. My husband and I ordered the Shrimp Chow Fun - lots of shrimp in a delectable sauce with wide noodles. Our friends enjoyed the following: Miso Soup, Spring Rolls, House (Chicken, Beef & Shrimp) Rice Noodles, Shrimp with Rice Noodles, Beef with Garden Vegetables, Shrimp and Scallops with Mixed Vegetables, and Shredded Crispy Steak. This is not the same place it was. New name, Dragon 88. It's a chain and the quality of food is awful. We ordered for a birthday get together. The bill was well over $150 before tips. NEVER AGAIN! Now I understand after all these years why their menus are left at every location possible. I finally gave in and gave them a try tonight for take out. Firstly, they are overpriced for very poor quality food! Please keep in mind that we very rarely waste food . My bf was craving chicken teriyaki and unfortunately he ended up throwing away a little over half of his platter. The "grilled" chicken teriyaki was boiled & bland chicken cut up over a bed of raw shredded cabbage and a small ramekin (halfway filled) of so called teriyaki sauce (it tasted nothing like teriyaki). I had the shrimp with broccoli which was okay. It was extra heavy on the broccoli & sauce, but light on the shrimp. The side of brown rice was so disappointing, it was mushy, overcooked and tasteless . I could only eat half of it and tossed the rest. The fried crab wontons were soggy and didn't even come with any sweet & sour sauce to dip them. Lastly, was the fried chicken wings; 2 words "extra salty!" We are proud of ourselves for trying somewhere different, but after spending over $50 for our order, we were definitely left feeling disappointed and unsatisfied with our dinner. read more

My husband has a severe allergy to MSG, so we will not eat in a restaurant that does not guarantee they don't use the nasty stuff. (we've bought that line so many use "we'll just leave it out" only to discover a few hours later that he is in agony. We've even been lied to, so we are VERY careful about where we eat) So, the first commendation is for Ding How's committment to a menu that has NO MSG. Our go-to Chinese restaurant is Bamboo Garden in Bel Air which is spectacular-but FAR. We are in Timonium frequently and decided to give this place a try. First time impression -- typical generic American-style Chinese food. The food was served hot and had flavor. The Kung Pao chicken was battered and deep fat fried. Maybe it was standard General Tso's, Orange, or Sesame chicken chunks and they just change the sauce and add peanuts and call it Kung Pao? My impression of Ding How was that it once had hopes of more business that never came, and now they are trying to scrape by, by keeping their costs down. The place was dark -- few lights on. It was mid-afternoon on Saturday, but the one employee upfront was slowly setting the tables with rumpled, mismatched table cloths. The decor was otherwise nicely appropriate for a sit-down Chinese place. I was the only one at a table for the hour I was there, although one young, squabbling couple did come in to pick up take-out. The menu the waitress brought had the name of a different Chinese restaurant on the cover. Maybe they got a bunch of them when another joint went out of business? In the shadows of one corner was the world's smallest, saddest sushi bar with boxes stacked behind it. The price was average for what I ordered, but expensive for what I got. read more

Love this place. Can't go wrong here. It's not very big, and not extremely fancy, but it's decorated nicely and it has a feel of some class with cloth napkins and all of that. Service is spectacular and the food always comes quickly. They also do great take-out service. We went here on Christmas around 4:30 and wow, you can tell how much people like this place. We didn't have to wait for a table, but by the time we left, people that came in DID have to wait for a table. I recommend just about anything. The orange chicken is very crispy, and the chicken and broccoli has some of the best brown sauce I've tried. Udon with veggies is also a great choice. read more

If you are looking for highly spiced and seasoned food -- You are in the wrong place. The Shrimp with Lobster Sauce was made with 21/25 Gray Shrimp and cooked to perfection served on a sizzling plate.. My guests also gave very favorable comments on their dishes. Trying to support a local eatery during these trying times and was very disappointed. Made it there before the order was ready and had to wait for them to finish coking an assortment of appetizers selected for dinner but the food was cold when I made back home (less than a mile drive). The egg roll was the smallest I'd ever seen not out of a box marked "mini" and was not very appealing at all. Good food. It's consistent and decent quality. Order an extra rice, since the portions are meager. We are long time clients. Be prepared to check your order and wait until it's correct. I cannot recall a time when we went that they got the order right. They always forget at least one thing. It's very frustrating. We have been using Ding How for years, primarily for carry out. Helen, her family, and staff have always done a great job, and their food is consistently very good! Yesterday we ordered carry out Ding How, and I asked for a large pork won ton soup that has in the past been included in all orders over $25. Apparently this has now changed, as I was now charged $5 for the soup! In addition, a copy of my charge card receipt was not included in with my order. If ordering in the future, and paying in advance by credit card, make sure you remember to tell them to include a copy of your credit card receipt with your order! read more

This place is walking distance from me and my go-to when I want Chinese but don't feel like going far. I believe they deliver but I always just go pick it up. Their food is pretty average Chinese food. I would stick with the standards that are hard to mess up like fried rice, lo-mein, etc. I got chicken and broccoli tonight and the sauce was very bland and the chicken kind of rubbery. The hot and sour soup is actually very good though. The beef broiled dumplings were just perfect, and an order is very generous, with all the sauces you need. The Rainbow Chicken- was zesty, hearty with a kick I liked- not bland as sometimes this dish can be, and they have brown rice. I decided to give this place a try. I ordered the Mongolian beef and general tso's chicken. The beef was decent but let me tell you the chicken was god awful. Not cooked and very chewy. In our 17 years of living in Maryland we have not found a single Chinese restaurant with decent food. We recently moved to the area from another suburb of Baltimore and decided to give Ding How a try. They're doing a thriving take-out business, but we decided to eat in the dining room. We were very pleasantly surprised with the food. My wife had shrimp and eggplant which came with at least 15 shrimp and lots of eggplant; the dish was fresh and delicious. I had Szechwan chicken which came with lots of fresh celery and carrots and seasoned with just the right amount of heat. The food was freshly prepared and used a minimum of corn starch -- an apparent staple with other area Chinese restaurants in the area. We will definitely be back. read more

Surprisingly good! I've been here years ago, and found it just typical generic Chinese. Went here last night- it's really improved. It's not perfect- but it's definetly not your standard-issue Chinese anymore, in a good way. The apps were quite standard- fried noodle-chips w/ little bowl of duck sauce, cream cheese (w/ microscopic crab, I geuss) wontons were tasty, as was spring roll and seafood soup- good, but standard-issue. One plus- they gave (on request) a nice bowl of really spicy mustard for dipping. The entrees shined in their saucing, though. We had a big group- we had Hunan tofu- called Homestyle Tofu elsewhere-- nice slices of crispy-soft fried tofu, plenty of fresh broccoli, pea pods, and 'shrooms, in a very nice salty-yet-light sauce; Kung Pao shrimp- sweet yet not cloying, nicely salty with soy, nice chili kick; plenty of medium but juicy shrimpy; lots of water chestnuts and peanuts - oddly, no green veggies; Orange chicken-- nicely fried chunks of real white meat chicken, nicely light yet sweet and spicy sauce, a few pieces of fresh broccoli; sweet and sour shrimp- fresh, heavily-breaded but in a good way butterflied shrimps, tossed with some pineapple, carrot, and green pepper chunks, served with a basic sweet and sour sauce on the side; Teriyaki chicken- full breast, real chicken, with nice sauce-- but otherwise plain, served on bed of raw chopped cabbage. Overall- food was really fresh, hot, and sauces were spot on. Only real miss was Teriyaki chicken- it needed a few more veggies thrown in to make it interesting. Or at least saute the cabbage, add some carrot slices or something! Big plus- BYOB!!! We hit the Graul's wine shop a few stores down, picked up a six pack of Natty Premium. Mmmmm. Setting iteslf- strip-mall but very nicely decorated small restaurant; some booth-style seating along the walls, tables out in middle; we were the only eat-in people, but they had lots and lots of carry-out folks coming through.
