Mom thought it was too dark in color and fried in old oil but I enjoyed it. The spring rolls were tasty in my opinion. Entrees - Squid pad thai was wrong in so many ways. It was watery and salty and tasted nothing like pad thai. The drunken noodles with shrimp also did not taste anything like drunken noodles...super wet and not spicy at all. It is hard to find good Thai restaurants in Baltimore nowadays so I am so glad we found this place! The ambiance is amazing, it makes you feel right at home. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food is amazing as well. We had the teriyaki dumplings and even my extremely picky eater 11 years old and 2.5 year old nephew loved them. If you love spicy food, you'll love the Thai curries. We walked into Spice & Dice with high hopes--the smell was... interesting. It hit like toilet water at first, but it may have been the incense burning in the foyer. They do have a cute little waiting area, which helped make the entrance a bit more welcoming (see pic) Our host was very attentive to cleanliness, which I appreciated. He offered to wipe down the table before seating us, especially since the first one was awkwardly placed right by the kitchen entrance. A small detail, but it made a difference. We ordered the papaya salad (som tum), larb gai (minced chicken salad), tom kha soup with chicken, and pad see-ew with shrimp plus steamed veggies on the side. The papaya salad was fresh and tangy and for my first time trying it, I really enjoyed it. The larb gai was spicy, flavorful, and tasted fresh as well. We were surprised it only came with one piece of lettuce. The pad see-iew was disappointing. The sauce was oddly sweet and watery, and it didn't have the balanced flavor I've had at other Thai spots. The side of vegetables was just plain steamed and no seasoning or sauce. This felt like an afterthought. Also, I nearly choked on a shrimp tail, which instantly turned me off the dish. Our server was kind but would vanish for long stretches at a time, making the experience feel a bit disconnected. In all, while some dishes stood out (especially the larb gai), the inconsistent flavors, service gaps, and odd smell upon entering left me feeling like this was a one-time visit. The restaurant is nicely decorated & tables are well spaced. Lots of privacy for conversations, it's comfortable to dine in here. However, food is much less desirable, not authentic at all. The spring rolls were very greasy, barely eatable. The fried fish cake appetizer came out so dark, they look burned. Obviously, it's time to change the frying oil. I had fried fish cake in many different Thai restaurants before, they always came out golden brown, very appetizing but it looks almost black from this place. Squid Pad Thai was also very disappointed. Pad Thai supposed to be dry with tons of flavors but it was so runny & salty, nowhere near what it should be. Same thing for Drunken noodles, the flat wide noodles were all broken into small pieces soaking in the over salted sauce. I would not recommend these dishes from this place. My sisters and I headed here for dinner on a Saturday night. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, but it definitely picked up throughout the night. The most interesting thing about the dine-in experience is their use of "call" buttons on the table to get service. AKA, they didn't check on us except when we got seated and gave us the first round of water. This was frustrating. We ran out of water during our meal and never got refills, despite hitting the call button for "water." We did it once or twice but still no one came around. The waitresses were very busy and zooming around, so it was nearly impossible to grab them. This also posed an issue around dining. Our entire dinner needed to be gluten free for allergy reasons. When we ordered the cashew nut chicken, the waitress told us it would not be crispy because of the gluten free requirement. We told her that was fine. When we got our food, we noticed the chicken was breaded. So, we pressed the "call" button. No one ever came over, we eventually had to grab her ourself to ask. It was actually gluten free as they used rice flour for it (like the calamari). This is not a dig at the restaurant or the waitresses for being busy, but maybe just a note that the call-button system doesn't work that well. We also needed our bill and despite pressing the button, didn't get it until we could flag her down. I would give 2.5 stars if I could, but I'm inclined to be slightly generous because I used to like this place I don't want to totally dis this business. I've come here many times over the years and each time is slightly worse than the time before. When me and my friends first discovered Spice and Dice, say, 10 years ago, we were excited about this little hole in the wall on Joppa Road that had good Thai food. It became a go to, despite the fact we had to remember it was BYOB. We assumed that eventually they would get their liquor license. Over the years, though, each visit has been more disappointing than the last. I've watched as they tried different things to boost the dining experience - a remodel (or two), a live jazz trio, and, last night, DJs spinning jazz and rock on vinyl. But in a restaurant, the food and service is the point. The papaya salad we had for an appetizer listed shrimp as an ingredient and sure enough, we got two small shrimp with it. Two. One for each of us, as we were splitting the app. It would've been greatly improved if we had just a few more ha ha. Pad Thai seemed like a safe choice so I ordered it for my entrée, picturing Pad Thais of old,, with crispy noodles and colorful vegetables and herbs on top. What I got was a pile of grey noodles with grey tofu sprinkled with a few green onions. Meh at best. My friend got grilled chicken, which was strangely dark such that it almost looked like beef. The presentation of his dish had a few more colorful vegetables so it was more appealing looking, but he said the taste was not compelling. I'm sorry to have to give this negative review of a place that I used to like. But, Spice and Dice, what's up? Did your good chef quit and you never got someone as good? I don't care about jazz Trios and vinyl DJs. I just want some good Thai food. I would recommend that the restaurant focus on improving the look and taste of the items on its menu. And ask the wait staff to keep an eye out for customers who are ready to order,pay or send their credit cards back. We're still in love with our favorite Thai place. It's changed over the years, but the food remains consistently wonderful. We ordered a couple of appetizers. Chive Dumplings-had more of a bread texture and haven't seen these anywhere else-excellent with their Sesame sauce. Shrimp Cakes paired nicely with the Sweet chili sauce and were tasty. For entrees, the lunch Gang Dang (Red Curry) portion was generous. Got it with shrimp and this is our favorite Curry. Tried the Pad See Ew (N3) as we usually order the Drunken Noodles. I love that they do not skimp on spice out of fear you won't like it or be able to handle it. Each dish gives you a takeout list of items to add to the dish too so you can really customize the dish. I wasn't sure... but once I got there I remembered that I've been to Spice & Dice before. But that was years ago, I believe. I regretfully forgot about this lol gem tucked away in a strip mall in Towson. If it's any help, it is located in the same place as that monstrosity, 'Old Glory' or as I like to think of it, 'That bar that college kids, sports fanatics & those lacking any adventure in food' place tend to default there. Back to S&D... Upon entering, you are greeted with the front desk and it just happened to be a very good indicator. There were quite a few people there either picking up orders or were food delivery pick ups. It was VERY busy. While all this mayhem may have been a turn off, it let me know this place was in high demand ... so I was okay with it. There was a woman that was multitasking her behind off. She handled the phone, register, handing out the pick up orders and making sure everyone got attention. Very impressed. There was a young man that was the perfect supper, backing her up. They had perfect synchronization. Eventually, we were seated in the dining room. I immediately noticed there was only one table seated in the entire dining room. I assumed this was bc of COVID restrictions and thats why the pickup area was so crazy... that was fine with me (but turns out, my assumption was wrong). We sat down and the same woman that was handling the whirlwind up front was now ALSO our server. WOW! Anyway, she came up, greeted us and was the perfect person. She knew that menu inside & out. I'm thinking she must be the manager or owner. In any event, she easily answered any questions we had and made some excellent recommendations. She was incredibly attentive give and kept checking on us. The timing of refills, getting things requested and clearing of plates was really spot on!! We opted on dining on a smattering of the following: 1. Thai iced tea: now while this is very simple to prepare, it can be tricky if they don't know what they're doin. It can really be overly sweet at times at other places - Yuck. Spice & Dice, However, is not one of those places. This was the perfect marriage of the sweet tea, condensed milk & ice (to temper out the sweetness. It melted in and evened everything out perfectly). SCORE!!! 2. Jasmine Tea: Perfect as always. And came in this individual carafe serving container. Pretty cool. SCORE!! 3. Tom Yum Soup (aka - Lemongrass Soup): I got the veggie version of this spicy Thai hot & sour lemongrass broth, fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, fresh cilantro, and lime juice mix. It's the perfect 'go to' soup for me. You know how when ur feeling down and a nice bowl of Pho or miso does the trick? Well, so does a good spicy version on 'Tom Yum' or 'Lemongrass' soup. Straight DEEEEE-licious-ness! Yummm, indeed! (see what I did there?!? Lol) Actually, after having it, I realized I would have been just as content having a MASSIVE bowl of this soup and just swimming in it... lol. So good. SCORE! Oh, btw... I ordered two pints of it 'to go' when we were done. Ha! 4. Thai Curry Puffs: These decadent, flaky, crust pies (3) were filled with tender potatoes, curry chicken, onions and garlic. They were served with a freshly cut cucumber salad (in a delicious sweet rice wine vinegar sauce). Perfect compliment. SCORE!!! 5. Yakizoba: This was a new one for me. It was Yakizoba Noodles stir-fried with your choice of meat (I opted for chicken), pineapples, sweet onions, cabbage and carrots in a red wine reduction sauce. This was INCREDIBLE!!! The flavors were everything I was wanting and didn't even realize. I destroyed this dish! Yummmm SCORE!! 6. Bangkok Noodle Soup: My dining companion (aka 'Brotha from Anotha Motha') Dined on a choice of noodles (ramen), ground pork, fish balls, shrimp balls, tofu balls, roasted pork, and beansprouts in an aromatic clear broth. It was a little too sweet for him so he asked for some sauces to spice it up a bit. I couldn't handle the fire sauces he added so I tasted it PRE-BLAZING. It was sooooo so good. I could see what he meant by the broth being sweet. It reminded me of that delicious sweet herbaceous broth one normally gets with chicken pho (another fave of mine). Yummm! SCORE!!! Earlier, I mentioned how dead the dining room was. Turns out, we simply got there BEFORE the dinner rush. By the time we finished, the sizable dining room was almost at capacity (socially distancing enforced) and they had people waiting to be seated. SCORE!!!
