Let me be quick and succinct. This is mediocre Americanized Chinese food. It is not terrible but it is not good either. Although it offers variety like lamb that you won't find in most places, the dishes are devoid of any significant flavor. The place is take-out only and that is a good thing since they have spent no effort to present any kind of effort to appeal to customers. If bland food for cheap is your jam, then this is your place. Quality as I remember. Used to go here a good bit when I lived up there. Now I don't live there but I was around, so I figured it would be good. Easy online ordering on here. Chicken and broccoli was as I remembered: good. Had some of the general Tso's, too: also good. Prices are typical for carryout Chinese. Staff interaction was minimal, but good. read more

This was definitely disappointing. There's a lot of Chinese restaurants in the Towson area and I've found my favorite already (Happy China Chinese Restaurant) but it's always good to broaden your horizons and see what else is out there. This place isn't it. I got a general tso's chicken lunch special with lo mein, fried chicken dumplings and a shrimp spring roll. The general tso's chicken was okay, there was a lot of dark meat so it tasted gristly. The lo mein was so dry and didn't taste like anything. The fried chicken dumplings however were amazing! I love dumplings so this being a winner made my rating go from one to two. The shrimp spring roll was good as well. Overall, I might be back for the dumplings but I'm not sure if I'd try anything else. read more

The food at this location was average American chinese food. It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. I had the general tso chicken and my husband had the mongolian beef. Bother were decent but the hot and sour soup was really good. we do appreciate that this restaurant gives the crunchy crackers with your meal though. The food sucks and the customer service is the worse. I was a frequent customer and tonight they delivered a horribly cooked meal and when I called and asked to talk to the manager they dodged the call. After I was explaining about the issues the manager jumped in the call and proceeded to argue with me. I would not have called if it was only one entree but everything except the crab Rangoon was horrible. I will never eat there again and I recommend that avoid the place as well. I was in desperate need of a good carryout. I ordered online and they delivered within 40 minutes, which I thought was excellent for a Friday night. I ordered shrimp pad Thai (delicious) and sesame chicken (also delicious). The food also was presented in a lovely way with julienned carrots and veggies layered on top of the chicken and fried rice neatly beside it. Ordered carry out from here yesterday. I got the egg drop soup, veggie spring roll, egg roll and the Thai drunken noodles. The egg drop soup was good, sort of the baseline you expect but the crispy wonton noodles for it were stale and oily. Veggie spring roll was hot and crispy. Truly enjoyed it. The egg roll had, I guess, ground beef in it? Tasted weird and was not a huge fan. Most disappointing item was the noodles. The noodles themselves were stuck together, almost like they cooked it as a few huge globs of noodles and didn't care if it ever separated or not. The shrimp in it tasted pretty good and the veggies were not overcooked which you can see too often. The chicken was OK, but the beef was a little gristly. The sauce was greasy but the flavor was OK. Overall would not eat here again and if I did, would only get the egg drop soup (without the crispy wonton noodles) read more

I just ordered what has to be the absolute worst excuse for fried dumplings and egg roll, I've ever "tried" to eat. One bite of both and everything went immediately into the trash. Adding to the horrible food is the appearance of the place. Not filty, but not even near clean. And all the film plastic the owners are hiding behind sets a terrible appearance. If they wanted to have barriers from the public, how about doing a professional looking job. From appearance alone, I had decided that I'd not return, but when I got home a started to eat - WOW!!! I have been a north Baltimore county resident for over twelve years and have driven by this place countless times; for some reason, it never registered on my radar. I had been a fan of the now-defunct Great Fortune Buffet that was across from the Starbucks, Five Guys, Coldstone Creamery, et al. but had to start looking for a new place. I definitely found it. The restaurant is small but appears clean. There are maybe six or seven small tables. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It's a carry out place, so don't expect tea lights, a romantic atmosphere or an engagement ring. Full disclosure: I have only eaten Hunan Chef's fried dumplings, chow fun and pork fried rice, but all three dishes are incredibly good. If you get the fried dumplings, be sure to ask for PAN FRIED and not deep fried or you'll get a pimply, warty wad of meat and dough (not that I've ever gotten deep fried dumplings at Hunan Chef, but I made the mistake of not clarifying the term "fried" with another Chinese carry out and thought they were barely edible. I ate them despite my loathing :D ). The dumplings are large, succulent and not incredibly fatty. I consider myself a dumpling connoisseur, having eaten dumplings at well over 200 restaurants throughout the years, and I can safely say that these are very, very good. The only other place that I can think of that has better dumplings is China Kitchen at the Wilkens Avenue Giant shopping center. Onto the chow fun. If you don't know what this stuff is, you owe yourself a try. Chow fun is hard enough to find in Baltimore, let alone *good* chow fun, but this offering is superb. Actually, I think it's crazy good superb. The rice noodles are so delectably wide, thick, tender (yet satisfyingly toothy) and yummy. It's 10:30AM in the morning, and my mouth is watering at the thought of ordering this dish again. This is not a low cal fare, but, hey, it's Chinese food and in keeping with most of the cultural cuisine. Crank out another ten miles on your bike, and you'll be all good. Hunan Chef also has mei fun, the much thinner rice noodles. This is what most places have. Never tried it here, but I expect it to be outstanding. Mei fun, IMO, is nowhere as interesting to eat as chow fun. The pork fried rice is quite good but not what I would call over-the-top excellent. To be fair, this was offered as a free dish since I ordered a minimum amount ($35, I believe). Give this place a try. I think you'll be quite surprised at how awesome it is. read more

After trying every Chinese delivery place that delivers to Timonium, this is by far my favorite! I order from Hunan Chef almost one a week.The portions are generous and the prices cant be beat. I always get the General Tso's Tofu because it's the best tofu dish in the area and better than many other places I've tried. I also get a new dish to try every time I order and haven't had a dish I didn't like yet! I see some people have had bad experiences and that's a shame. But I know things happen. I, however, have never had a problem in the last 2 years that I've been ordering from them *knock on wood* and will continue to order from Hunan Chef until they cant deliver to me anymore! I'm actually about to place an order now and I definitely recommend you do the same! PS. Try the cheesesteak egg roll, oh my goodness, it's a must! read more

This is my favorite place in the Towson/Lutherville/Timonium/Hunt Valley area to get Chinese food! I have lived in the area for 5 years and have tried every Chinese restaurant in order to find a reliably good restaurant to satisfy my occasional Chinese food cravings. This place is fantastic! I highly recommend the lunch boxes-- they are well-portioned and reasonably priced. I like replacing the rice in my lunch box with lo mein, which is always chewy and delicious. Unlike other Chinese places that give you loads of barely cooked onions in your lo mein, Hunan Chef serves it as just noodles, which is exactly what I prefer. The owners of the business are always nice and try to give me free sodas, which I always decline. Seriously, get Chinese food here! read more

I've ordered from Hunan Chef about 3 or 4 times on the recommendation from a friend. The delivery is consistently fast and the food is hot when it gets here (we live about 10 minutes away from the restaurant). I especially like the shrimp spring rolls, mu shu, and broccoli dishes. The spicy dishes aren't very spicy, a lot of them are a little salty for my taste, and the Lo mein and fried rice are pretty bland, but everything else has been good. read more

Barely edible. Even 3 teens did not gobble it down. They are nice, food delivered hot. But no seasoning, soggy breaded ' spring rolls' filled with mushy green paste of zero flavor. Same soggy flavorless breaking on the sweet and sour shrimp. If you are an American who thinks chicken nuggets and fries rock then perhaps you will like this. Sad thing the owners probably know how to cook decent Asian food, but are trying to make what Americans want. We got 5 entrees and none were even half eaten even by starving teens. Got delivery to my office which is very hard to find to the point where I'm used to people calling me saying they're lost. Not only did they find the place perfectly fine, they got here like 30 minutes before I expected!! My food was super hot to the point I still had to let it cool down, which I'm not complaining about what so ever. They listened to all my special requests with no problem and the food was very good as well! Will for sure be ordering again! read more

I have found my new favorite delivery! The food tasted fresh, and the best eggplant that I have had in a while. We did not go to the store, so we cannot comment on that at all, but delivery was prompt, and they refrained from knocking so loud as to wake up our sleeping baby.
