We were just passing through looking for a good/quick place to stop for lunch. I'm not sure who it was that helped us but he was the friendliest and so kind. We had a large group and they were so patient and quick with the orders. As for the food, we had lots of burgers, a few dip dogs, and onion rings. The bacon cheese burgers were great! The onion rings and dip dogs were a little more on the greasy side, pretty expected when ordering fried food. We ended the meal with milk shakes that were also great. Welllll, we were out in the countryside traveling north on the main highway and didn't want to eat at the big chain restaurants so we took the exit and drove the beautiful country roads to this place. I have decided that I officially don't like pink dogs. Pork dogs are gross, they lack the snap of an all beef dog. It's just straight slimy mush. So this place. Parking is an issue. You pretty much just have to break all sorts of parking laws to get a spot. The "famous" dip dogs are nasty. Greasy with a bad taste. Then there's those disgusting pink dogs. On a long drive up to West Virginia, we stopped here for lunch and a moment to stretch our legs. This place was a crowd-pleaser and super fun! It's a little off the beaten path, though you can see the sign from the highway if you squint. There's a decent amount of parking. This place has been around a long time (the 1950s, iirc) and you can see the ways it has grown over the years. The dining room, bathrooms, and gift shop are all sort of separate outbuildings. There's a small patio with a couple of metal chairs and tables, which is where we sat and ate; however, seems like call-in and carryout are popular options. You order at the counter in the main building and your order number will be called when your food is ready. The menu consists of dip dogs (very similar to a corn dog, made with Carolina-style "red" hot dogs and slathered in mustard unless otherwise requested), hot dogs, burgers, simple sandwiches, chicken tenders, and ice cream/milkshakes. We all wanted to save room for supper so we kept it pretty light; I had a grilled cheese and fries, parents each had a chili dog and split fries, and husband ordered two dip dogs. This is obviously a family run establishment and we enjoyed seeing all the history through the pictures and tributes to family and community members while we waited. The gentlemen taking our orders were polite and working efficiently. The ladies' restroom was hot but clean when we visited it before getting back on the road. Our food was simple and tasty! The fries were super hot and salted nicely and the grilled cheese was so buttery. My parents enjoyed their hot dogs. I tried a bite of a dip dog just to say that I had; I loved the nice light crisp of the breading (not as cakey as your average corn dog). We visited Dip Dog as I was traveling from Bristol, VA back to my home in North Carolina after Christmas. Our group arrived around 11:15 am and found an empty parking lot. We headed into the inside ordering area. We announced it was our first time and would need some time to review the menu. The cashier gave us a color-changing plastic cup since it was our first time. Our cool is that? Our group ordered a slaw dog (no onions), two dip dogs, a BLT, and onion rings. As we waited for our food to come out the parking lot steadily filled. It appears we beat the lunch rush. When they called our order, we settled into one of the small seating areas outside. Everything looked really good. BLT was a great size and the bread was toasted perfectly. The Slaw dog was loaded with toppings. The Dip Dogs were crispy and slathered in mustard. The Onion Rings were plentiful and coated with a tempura-like batter. Yes, they use pink/red dogs here. North Carolinians are likely super familiar but it's just likely a majority pork dog. Still tastes delicious if you ask me. I liked that the Dip Dog coating is wonton-like. Thin and crispy. All the staff was really nice. Definitely recommend visiting. We came here on a recommendation from a friend en route to Asheville from NOVA. It's a quick 5 min detour off 1-81. It is an authentically vintage fast food place. They have a cute little gift shop with a few tables inside for eating. It's a good fast food restaurant that serves amazing corn dogs you can't get anywhere else. Atmosphere (2/5): Its take away only and you walk up to the service window. They call your number via an old loudspeaker system and you go pick it up. They had some outdoor tables (in the sun) and a couple tables on the porch for limited covered seating. Service (4/5): During COVID, they are limiting 3 people inside to order at once. Food (4/5): Easily the best corn dog I've had - the batter was light and fluffy and slightly sweet - like funnel cake batter. Delicious!! The onions rings seemed cooked in the same batter - we ordered one side order and it was so many we couldn't finish. They were a bit greasy and you could tell they were fresh fried (not frozen). Oh, man - I really hate to do this to you, Dip Dog, but I just have to... Dip Dog - you've been on my 'To Eat' list for YEARS - I've been trying to persuade (or, shall we say, 'trick'?) the hubs in driving us 5+ hours to get to your stand. After some negotiations and giving in, mm by mm, we finally planned a road trip to reach Dip dog as our destination. Finding the place wasn't too hard, as it'll show up on your GPS with no issue; it's located off of Highway 11, so just pay attention! Dip Dog offers hamburgers, dogs, sandwiches, cheesesteaks, seafood baskets, and chicken/BBQ dinners. We ordered a Dip Dog and a side of onion rings to-go. The Dip Dog was just not good. It's literally a version of a corn dog, but the batter is more thick and it didn't really taste like anything - nothing close to a pancake batter nor a cornmeal batter. It's slathered with mustard, which also didn't add anything to the dog on the stick. The main 'issue' we had was with the dog itself - it was bright red with a pink interior and not like any hot dog we've seen before. What I found out was that this dog seems to be popular in southern Virginia and in the Carolinas. Honestly, when we took our first bite, we couldn't ingest it and had to spit it out. Both the Dip Dogs and the onion rings are made-to-order, so they come piping hot. The onion rings were forgettable as well, as they were just way too greasy, and it seems to be the same batter being used for all their fried items. You can bring your food to any of the dining areas - there are a few tables and chairs outside, and there is another 'indoor'-style area, that's attached to the whole building (thinking of it as a long rambler/ranch house), towards the end. The staff here are fast and efficient; this place seems to be a favorite for locals and those who grew up coming here. I took my then little kids there 10 yes ago and we hated it! It was a mess in a pouch of aluminum foil. We tried to have a conversation with the workers and they were soooo rude. The whole experience was terrible and I will never go back nor will my adult children. Even the management wasn't capable of having a conversation with us. I also had their french fries; it was pretty much your average non chain french fry, nothing amazing either. I guess maybe their niche is the fact that they have corn dogs? I can't think of another place that sells corn dogs. From what I sampled, their food is a-ok. They do have a diverse menu though, from fried oysters to a bacon and egg sandwich. I give this place 3 stars, as the food isn't out of this world, but I would definitely come and try the dipdog if you are in the area. Dip Dog is a great alternative to fast food because the food is actually cooked to order and is of good quality. I tried their bbq sandwich which was tasty, but small, so I would recommend getting the bbq dinner which comes with 2 sides. My mom got the double bacon cheeseburger which was huge. My dad had the philly cheese steak which came with a good amount of onions and was on a delicious bun. Best of all, their shakes are creamy and they have lots of flavors to choose from. Solid local food joint. Stopped by with a load of Boy Scouts driving through the state. Inexpensive hot dogs, burgers, even had some fried shrimp and oysters on the menu. All sorts of ice cream and milk shakes. Had the dip dog (I.e., corn dog) and slaw dog. Onion rings are good (they give you a ton of them!). Be aware, if a greasy spoon restaurant is a nonstarter, this is probably not the place for you. But there was definite small town charm to the place. Workers were very friendly.
