Hubby described this well as "someone's hobby project". They really wanted to open a cafe and here we are. Lots of equipment inside and a little bit chaotic. Not much by way of seating or students setting up to work for an afternoon despite the prime location. I drank coffee / mocha / latte at a different cafe every day and this was probably the least favorite of all my drinks. Service was friendly and fine. read more

frankly, after this morning, I'm never setting foot in this business again or recommending it to anyone, if anything, I'm going to recommend that they not go. I have worked years in the service industry and have never spoken to anyone in such a condescending way. The staff member I would like to recognize as being condescending and difficult was an older woman with dark hair, who took my order. I went in this morning, August 23 and and asked for an iced macchiato I was met with the response " so we don't do that whole Starbucks thing here" I said ok I can pivot and she then said to me "so what did you want an iced caramel macchiato?" both statements made with a condescending tone, body language and a smirk, I was shocked that this was the kind of response I would get for trying to order a coffee that's on their menu (and the menu doesn't specify it is not ok to order iced) You might read this review and think that's kind of a silly coffee order that should traditionally be served hot and that's fine, but that's an opinion and any staff member shouldn't speak to customers this way regardless of their personal opinions. There's many ways of not being a snob behind the counter handling orders and phrasing business policies to anyone who comes in and asks for a coffee that you wouldn't suggest having on ice or who ordered something you wouldn't have. The rest of the staff is fine, but that woman doesn't know how to handle customers respectfully. I am still a bit surprised by her and give her credit to some degree for being that blatantly rude to a customer while working at a tiny coffee shop in the middle of nowhere, I'd expected in New York City, but not here. To try to help her out here's some suggestions for next time, " you know, I love that coffee as well, but I'd suggest not having it on ice because it affects the taste of the coffee" or " I'm sorry we actually don't do that order on ice here for a variety of reasons, I suggest------ as a good alternative" It's not that hard to be kind and helpful to your customers..... especially when they're coming in not caffeinated and craving a strong coffee. read more

needed some coffee while visiting dartmouth and i was so happy to find dirt cowboy. the staff was so sweet and it had a cute storefront. there is only a bit of seating outside but we took our drinks to go. they had these adorable jugs of maple syrup and mugs for sale. i ordered a pandan iced latte and it was so delicious! i was so excited that they had pandan syrup here since it's so rare. if you've never had it before, it tastes similar to coconut & vanilla. so good, i would definitely come back! read more

This was my favorite spot as a college student and we make a point to stop here every time we're in town. When indoor seating is available it's the perfect study spot, and now with outdoor dining it's a wonderful COVID option when the weather is nice. They have so many coffee and tea selections (and an online shop!), but where they shine is the food in my opinion. Their sandwiches are so petite, but so perfect. The little loaf has a light crust but soft on the inside, and the best blend of turkey, sharp cheese, spinach, and tomato (depending on how you order it). Small but mighty. When you get a pastry, I recommend having them heat it up. An absolute game changer! I'm so glad this place is still around, especially with much of Hanover changing. I always make it a point to stop by at least once whenever I'm in Hanover. There's a great coffee and pastry selection. Do yourself a favor and grab a blueberry muffin; best blueberry muffin I've had to date. This cafe holds a charming spot on the edge of campus in Hanover's downtown. I ordered a latte, which was good, but the cashier asked me how many espresso shots I wanted and had zero idea what the typical amount for the sizes was. The chocolate croissant had what I think was a honey coating? It made the croissant softer and less crispy on the outside, which was disappointing. Pricing was too high for what I ordered, in my opinion -- over $10 for a small latte and croissant. Everything was automatically put in a to-go container, including a huge plastic clamshell for the croissant, even though I was planning to sit at one of their outdoor tables to eat. It felt incredibly wasteful and frustrating. Finally, the proud anti-vax messaging was disappointing and confirmed that this wasn't the place for me. read more

Visit Date: August 31, 2020 Came here as a pit stop during our trip to Vermont. The hubs and I have had a lot of trouble getting along lately but I can say he does plan out good pit stops for a longer road trip so our son can stretch his legs out, maybe play at a playground and I can get some coffee. I noticed this cafe and went in. I had the dirt cowboy which was espresso with half and half I think. The drink could have been called the dirty cowboy. Either way the coffee was pretty good. I have so much coffee at home now because I started selling java momma so I opted not to buy any coffee for home but I still was happy to come in here and sample a cup of coffee. I absolutely love coffee and have what I believe to be relatively low standards (Starbucks should be the minimum level of coffee!) Nearly each time I've been here, it has been disappointing. The business hours are atrocious for any college or city standard, the espresso tastes watery and sour, the seating is essentially nothing, the line makes no sense with random coffee bags in the way. Dirt Cowboy (which I originally thought was named The Dirty Cowboy, and didn't really want to go) is a cozy cafe that serves coffee, espresso, tea, freshly-made juices, smoothies, pastries, and sandwiches. It is easy to spend the day here reading, writing, and/or lounging. In fact, it smells so delicious that the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafts down Main St. and practically drags you in by your down coat. There are outlets for computers, which is useful, but they don't have free WiFi. I'll tell you why this is both a blessing and a curse. Ready? Okay. If you need to get work done, you get it DONE. You don't have a choice. You can't email, you can't read the news online, you can't facebook, you can't Yelp (!). Focus on that document you're typing, read those articles, drink your coffee, and be productive. That said, if you want to sit and e-chat with friends, you're likely to be disappointed (although there are a lot of local networks you can link to, but don't tell anyone I said so). My only other grievance is that they close at 6pm, which is ridiculous. This is a college town, people. Students need a warm place to do work that isn't a library or a dorm room. First I should say that the food here is great. The baked goods particular are stellar and the owner is a very good roaster. The problem is that he is evidently contemptuous of his customers. His "Open Hours" sign should read, "closed any day that ends in a Y, unless I randomly feel like opening." Instead the sign reads as if he is actually open sometimes--but then there is a scrawled sign taped to the door: Closed today, or open tomorrow at 730 (until when?). It seems to me that when you list "open hours" that's a kind of a contract with your customers. The owner feels NO responsibility to his customers. I've tried 5 times in the last two weeks to buy coffee or food or both (Yes, I know the definition of insanity). I ran into a guy who was at the Inn who had tried 5 times in one week to buy a cup of coffee--you should have heard HIS assessment of Dirt Cowboy. I'm sure that Covid will be mentioned as an excuse. Well, it's become "the dog ate my homework," for some people. At least for coffee it takes ONE person to serve it up and ring it up, and when the place is closed, I peer in the window and there are several people there doing things. So Covid? NOT the problem. Until and unless DC can recommit to their customers, if you want a cup of coffee my recommendation--words I never thought I'd type--check out Starbucks. It's too bad: the food is good, the coffee is great, the beans are first-rate. But I can take a hint: the owner hates me. read more

When you enter, the pastry display is on the left. They have an entire juice section. I just decided to get a coffee and some pastries, which were quite good! I came here on a recent trip to Hanover because I didn't want to drink just another generic Starbucks coffee that I can get anywhere else across America. I figured I'd give this coffee shop a chance, but was disappointed. First, no WiFi. Really, at a coffee shop close to a college campus? At least provide WiFi for an hour or two so that people can get work done if they need internet. I was able to use the Dartmouth Public WiFi for a little bit, but it was intermittent and the service was not super strong. Second, I got the hot chocolate which everyone raved about, but it tasted like a generic powdered hot chocolate. I did get the marshmallows which were a nice touch, handmade, and delicious, but it was generally underwhelming. I also paid $2.70-something for the hot chocolate, when the price was listed as $2 - not sure if I got charged for the marshmallows somewhere along the line, but it was a little misleading. Third, it was cold inside. Yes, I know it was 18 degrees outside and windy, but put the heater on please. I came into the coffee shop to stay warm and do work, neither of which I was really able to do. Fourth, it seemed a bit dirty and rundown. They have a wide selection of smoothies, coffee, ice cream, sandwiches, pastries, etc. but the overall look of the place just seemed a bit dilapidated. Overall, I wanted to support and like this small business instead of going to Starbucks, but next time instead of coming here and griping, I'll probably just take my business to Starbucks. Simply put, Dirt Cowboy is a Coffee Aficionado's Dream Cafe. The variety, care and skill that's put into every cup of coffee is a rarity in New England. As a San Francisco native, I was skeptical of this cafe's ability to enlighten my taste buds but they did. I chose two coffees. One, the Tanzanian Peaberry in a large size. Two, the French Roast in a smaller size. Coffee beans line the edges of the store in self-serve containers. You can buy whole or ground beans here. There is also a nice showcase of Chemex and other coffee making tools for purchase. They have a menu consisting of breakfast pastries, smoothies and sandwiches. It's a full service cafe where you can have breakfast or lunch and spend hours working on your novel, studying for a test or uploading photos to Facebook. Coffee aroma fills the air in the way that Starbucks smells. I swear I got a caffeine high just by walking in the place. The large coffee is LARGE. I uploaded a photo of it to this page. The lemon danish was solid. It was a very filling treat at 10AM for a guy that skipped breakfast. Staff was helpful, they accept credit cards. plenty of tables and space to chill out. The music...A - OK --------- The only downside? No Wireless internet. Those of us with laptops that have great reception can pick up the Dartmouth public wi-fi that technically ends at the green but your'e across the street so it does work but can be pretty spotty. My iPhone 4 didn't see the network, my iPad did see it but dropped and my MacBook Air picked up the wi-fi with 2 bars of signal. Your results may vary. Great coffee. Great people. Awesome atmosphere. Came to grab a coffee with a friend that I was visiting in Hanover. It's on the Main Street and one of the few shops within town. I ordered the mocha latte with 1 shot of espresso. I was pretty happy to find out that there wasn't a Starbucks in town (not counting the Starbucks brew at the Dartmouth bookstore), and even more pleased to hear about this place. I had a pretty decent cappuccino here, kind of rustic and served in an over-large mug (grr). I did have a very yummy danish. Even late in the day, they had a huge selection of pastries, I wish I could have tried more of them... That would have rated it 3-stars, in my book, but later in the day I stopped by and had an Americano, which was much much better than the cappuccino, and served just as an espresso, with boiling water on the side. It's expensive. A large French roast black coffee is $2.70, the cup is not full, it is a 12 ounce cup. That is 10 ounces of coffee black for $2.70. The quality of the pastries and food is excellent, but again expensive. Three croissants and a black coffee cost $24, keep in mind that's 10 ounces of black coffee. I dont think the coffee was all that good either. It was ok. SB french roast was better. Probably not a fair representation of their coffee. read more

Quite possibly the most overrated thing in the entire state of New Hampshire. Just because something's local doesn't make it good. I tried to give this place a fair chance. I really did. But when you're a freaking coffee shop that closes at 7, it's hard to. (Or at least it did when I left. It started out closing at 6, then for a few months it closed at 11, and back to 7.) Third place, anyone? Their cups are too small and overpriced... I mean a large is not supposed to be 16 oz. The espresso-based drinks... aren't good. Dirt Cowboy is the local java joint that has done well over the years because - let's face it - they've long been the only show in town. Coffee is filter brewed by the cup and, by most people's standards, they sell a pretty decent cup of coffee. But as some have pointed out, they've also been without serious competition for a long time. Being the only 'serious' coffee joint has given them some leeway in how they run their operation and that has meant for a long time they closed up shop and called it a day at 6pm. In a small college town with limited retail opportunities that's kind of a bummer. Now comes Starbucks with later closing hours - 10p and 11p depending on the day - and they've got that world-famous Clover brewing system [not available in every Starbucks] which if you're not familiar with it you will be once you go and check it out. In other words, Dirt Cowboy has got itself some serious competition and they'd best respond. Starbucks also has a bigger store, free wifi, lots of AC outlets and a lot of other stuff. I don't think this going to kill off Dirt Cowboy but it's not going to help them either. Starbucks is going to do very well in this affluent well-educated town with folks who have been off the farm and know a thing or two. Where are the parents visiting from California, Connecticut or China going to stop in for coffee? You got it. And they won't be the only ones. DC is expanding hours, staying open later and promising to focus on customer service. Here's a friendly tip: a little remodeling and deep-cleaning wouldn't hurt either. Really. read more

So, this is a lovely coffee shop in a beautiful town. They're a local business that advertises in the front window that they pay their staff a living wage. They serve a great cup of coffee, feel a great deal more personable that your usual chain, and their baked goods are made on site. However, there are two major omissions here. First, there's no wi-fi. I was told that if you sit in the right place, you can pick up the Hanover Public Wi-Fi link, which is at some distance. Second, they also seem to be placed in a dead zone for cell reception (at least AT&T). So, even if you can run a hot spot through your cell, you can't get data that way either. This is a place I'd love to love, but in this day and age, it's simply substandard to run a coffee shop without access to the internet. I'm afraid I'm down the block at the Starbucks right now, typing this review. read more
