Lou's actually has friendly service especially compared to the rest of the New Hampshire area. You get a hi when you come in and once you are seated they ask you if you want water or coffee to go t away. And the coffee is actually hot. We sat at the counter at 8:30 am before the crowds showed up. Got coffee, a muffin (chocolate), and eggs. The food is good diner food. However, the muffin was great. Not too sweet and super chocolaty. Loved it. Can't say it's the best food I ever had. However worth the pop in. read more

Lou's is the best. It was the best when I went to school down the street, and it is still the best now. I've been at least 10x and it is always a treat. Not fancy - just comfortable and good. The setting is classic Hanover, and the staff are always super nice. Sure, you choose between the "house" syrup and real maple syrup, but all the usual breakfast staples are awesome here. The food, the friendly service, the atmosphere (brightly lit, comfortable seating, and full of bright eyed young college students), and an extensive menu of classics and more innovative items. The variety of "sides" includes black beans (which I got and loved!), baked beans, seasoned home fries, hash browns, and green salad. There are also so many "extras" to try. We tried the buttermilk biscuit with strawberry jam. It was so good! I loved the green goddess omelette, my friends loved the classic Benny, the pancakes, and the corned beef hash. I've been coming to this Hanover institution since the early 1980s. Food is fresh and good quality ingredients. Some classics have been on their menu for as long as I can remember, but there are always innovative new things as well. Portions are large. Servers are friendly. Desserts and other baked goods are incredible. It is the place to get the best custom-decorated birthday cakes and Thanksgiving pies (they made nearly 1000 pies last Thanksgiving - get your order in in advance). A carrot cake aficionado in our family who has tasted carrot cakes around the world ranks Lou's tied for number one. Prices aren't cheap, but rent in Hanover isn't cheap either, they take care of their employees, ingredients are of high-quality, and it is the kind of local business I like to support. For a hearty and healthy lunch, a bowl of their homemade chicken soup (available with or without noodles) hits the spot. For a delicious savory breakfast, Doc's omelette (corn beef hash and melted cheese is really good) as is the cowboy bowl. For a sweet breakfast (albeit more than I can handle), the glazed cruller French toast is a delicious menu staple. And their apple cider donuts, muffins and crullers are excellent. (The glazed apple cider donuts are my personal favorite). Real New Hampshire maple syrup is available for an upcharge and although I wish it were all they served, it is really the only way to go with their breakfasts. Ham was great and the English muffin and sourdough were notable too--they are made in house. Went here on a Monday morning and it was quite busy. Sat at the counter as it was just me. Classic diner feel, service was friendly and quick and the food....wonderful. Decided to go with something a little different than my usual eggs benedict and I'm glad a did. I had the Poutine Bowl and wow was it packed with flavor. Often when I visit it's packed. I've ordered many items from the menu, but on this visit I ordered the Cobb salad. It was large and all of the ingredients were fresh. We had breakfast here and ordered a variety of dishes. We had the lil green, big green, a chicken and waffle and another big green. Over easy eggs, crueller french toast, has browns and a orange cranberry muffin along with a banana pecan muffin also a cup of coffee. Service was very quick and the waitress took our order right away and we did make a change on our order and she was able accommodate us. Such a cute little bakery in Hanover! I came here for a late breakfast on a Sunday and initially felt a little overwhelmed. There was a long line of people waiting for tables so I figured we'd have to wait a long time, but we were seated after about 15 minutes. I had their bottomless flavored coffee, which was hazelnut, and I got an omelet. Their food menu is huge! While it was noon time most people were still eating breakfast and there was not a single thing on the menu that didn't seem good. I've been going to Lou's since the mid-90s, but my most recent visit was a real disappointment. I ordered the corned beef hash, and what I got was about 10% corned beef and 90% potatoes. The balance and flavor just weren't there The eggs didn't help either -- completely tasteless, and one of them actually came out with no yolk at all. For a place with Lou's reputation, that's surprising and frustrating. After so many good visits over the years, this was easily one of the worst experiences I've had here. It is right on the main street in town and blends in with all the other businesses along the vibrant downtown area. Inside at around 10AM on a Sunday, all the tables and counter seats were taken. We took our place in line and within 10 minutes or so we were at a table. It features a nice menu with a good variety of things to choose from. Dispite their somewhat high prices, the place was packed. The food was good and the staff hard working, efficient, and friendly. It's worth stopping into this little gem and trying it out. There is on street parking and although it is handicapped accessible, it could prove challenging trying to navigate a wheelchair inside. The food is unexpectedly above average despite its humble appearance! I tried the quesadilla special and salad-YUM! Everyone was thrilled with their orders and the grand finale-the Hanover Fudge Cake- was worth the visit by itself! Even with four people sharing, I had plenty to take home. Five stars for all. Can't imagine anyone giving this establishment less. We had breakfast and it's hard to give a breakfast 5 stars in my opinion since most taste the same and could do better making it at home. We had the Smokey garden scramble with Gouda cheese, squash and kale. It was really flavorful and good. I tasted my son's poutine bowl and I would definitely order that next time for myself. The steak and egg quesadilla was top notch and they did a good job with French toast and waffles. Even the hash browns were really good and didn't need ketsup. Tanealle did a fantastic job. The only negative was the gentleman working the pastry counter. There was literally no one in line. Everyone was seated but us, and he insisted that we move against the wall away from the bakery case and he seemed to instruct us to do that with a little bit of attitude, but I got over it as soon as I sat down but certainly it was uncalled for. I assumed the bakery case is for clients to view and entice them to buy. I could understand if they were busy, there was a line, or people were coming in to buy a pastry and we were in the way but that was not the case. Since it was 10am I'm guessing we were between rushes. My intention was to select a pastry and take it to go home, but I didn't want to go back and deal with him. Everyone else that worked there seem to be enjoying their job and enjoying their clients whether they were waiting on them or someone else was. If I was reviewing him it would have been a 1. Hopefully he will find a job he enjoys. Wish I wood have taken pictures because everything was plated nicely. A wonderful building in downtown Hanover just off the Dartmouth campus. Greeted nicely as we entered we sat down in a cozy diner style booth. We ordered the smokey scrambler and the red velvet hash. They both came with a delightful morning glory muffin. The home fries tasted old and like oil. The red velvet hash dry but tasty the poached eggs cooked correctly. My dad and I came for lunch one day and had some delicious chicken soup...homemade, lots of chicken and noodles. Yum! We came for breakfast the next day. I got the corned beef hash breakfast which was delicious. My dad got eggs, toast, and hash browns which he enjoyed. The staff is on top of everything and very friendly. Their baked goods we learned are baked fresh in-house every day. They have a day and a night baker in fact. The donuts looked to-die-for. I should have gotten one but I was too full. There are huge lines always here, but the counter is first-come-first-served and you likely won't have much of a wait there. read more

bought a coconut pie to take home mainly because the mile high apple pie is so good. The coconut pie was horrible. Basically Crisco mixed with coconut flakes. There was nothing about it that tasted remotely like custard. It was bland, no sweetness, no flavor. Just Crisco. Will not be buying that again and I recommend you don't either. Had to throw the pie out. My lunch was not good either..cold so called potato chips was sliced potato cooked in grease and was very greasy. the grilled cheese sandwich was with really cheap tasteless cheese.
