My friend also ordered a breakfast sandwich and said a similar thing. He also ordered a vanilla latte which he said was more vanilla than latte. If I were an Ump I'd call Umpleby's safe! Located a block away from Main; this spot is definitely worth the walk. With plenty of indoor & outdoor seating it's a great spot to work or chat. It has a cozy, rustic vibe that's not trying to do too much. Open at 8am this is a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch- with an all day breakfast sandwich menu. The food came out really quick which is good if you are rushing to class! I got the Miss Marple and a twice baked chocolate almond croissant. The miss Marple was really good; I picked the whole wheat sourdough which was delightfully thick cut which was needed given it was stuffed fully with egg, avocado, tomato. This sandwich was very filling and you could definitely share one. The twice baked croissant was decadent and I would definitely get it again. I've never seen anything like it- it was a like a traditional chocolate croissant with the almond marzipan filling. I would definitely recommend trying it! Fun little bakery/coffee shop in Hanover walking distance from Dartmouth. We had 3 breakfast sandwiches and a ham and cheese croissant. The sandwiches were good, they were a little dry, but yummy. We walked into this quaint little bakery on the sixth street across the hotel we stayed at. I wanted lunch because the menu looked good. We ordered a #5(Bertie Wooster) which is their version of the toasted sourdough classic turkey, bacon, cheese. lettuce, sliced apples and mayo sandwich, a Howard Roark which had Roast beef, lettuce, tomato , horseradish mayo on a sour dough bread(not toasted) , a blt sandwich which had bacon, lettuce, tomato on toasted wheat bread, a coconut macaroon, a Ukrainian snowball, a berry tart, a London fog and a vanilla latte. Of course it is a college town so most people working are students as expected and probably tired of the patrons coming in to a degree. It was a quick bite for us and did not really matter because service was what I expected. They did have water available which was a bonus. I did love the in house baked bread and the macaroon. I was checking out Hanover and decided to grab sandwiches at Umpleby's. I got the #8 (Dominique Francon) on wheat sourdough. It's loaded with hummus, avocado, tomato, goat cheese, snow peas and topped with lettuce. My wife got the #5 (Bertie Wooster) which is their version of the classic Turkey, cheese and apple sandwich. I was able to easily order online and my order was ready on time when we went to pick it up. My wife had asked for the Guinness sourdough, but they were out and subbed wheat sourdough. Not a huge deal, but I would have loved to try the Guinness bread. My sandwich was tasty and the bread was good. I'm not sure why Umpleby's has only 3 stars average, but I would definitely return if I'm in the area again. Their breakfast menu looks quite tasty as well. read more

The best sandwich spot in Hanover! The Bertie Wooster or their Reuben are my go-to's every time, but you can't go wrong with any of their choices. The pastries in the case are just okay, but there's lots of competition in the area so I rarely opt for those. Their sourdough is perfectly crusty and every sandwich is generously packed with meat. You could easily eat the whole sandwich bc it's so so tasty, but they're super filling and could get you two meals out of it. It makes for an awesome study spot, and there's a small patio for an outdoor option. Street parking right in front. The line can get long but it moves quickly and is certainly worth the wait! read more

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we all want local businesses, especially bakeries as good as this one, to stay in business during the pandemic. But honestly? For shame. This pastry shop is full of unmasked college students sitting around studying. They weren't even eating. Nobody is enforcing mask wearing, and there were at least 10 people inside - not a single person wearing a mask except the employees. One of the students told me she regularly arrived at opening and stayed until close, and nobody ever asked her to wear her mask. Anyone else stoked for the next surge...? ‍ We ALL wish things were normal. We all wish we could go to cafes and read for hours as if nothing were wrong. But this bakery is officially unsafe. Nice little Cafe with good seating and atmosphere. Wife and I chose to split an éclair and combine with breakfast blend coffees. The ganache was tasty, pastry firm. The filling was creamy but a bit lacking in flavor. Not flavorless, just a bit weaker than expected. The coffee was excellent. Smooth served in a ceramic mug, makes you feel like you are visiting with friends. The young women behind the counter were very friendly and helpful and checked with us as they cleaned and stocked to make sure we were enjoying our visit. It's a cute little place, and people obviously love to work here, but I just found it a bit plain. It's also very full so oftentimes, it's hard to get a table. I got a coffee, which was well-brewed. I guess it's easier to order it in a to-go cup due to the size of the cups I guess. I was confused. The pastry display sucked me in and I ended up getting a russian tea cake and a chocolate crinkle. The russian tea cake was delicious, but oh so small. It's light and lemony. The chocolate crinkle is an amazing chocolate cookie with powdered sugar on top. When I was looking for the bread selections on the board above where the sandwich selections are she directed me by pointing to sign on the counter with an annoyed look on her face. The phryne fisher is good except it is an open face sandwich -- they only give you one piece of bread cut in half and they don't smash the avocados enough. This place gets insanely busy especially on weekend mornings and the staff is a bit scattered which is very understandable. I came here with some friends after successfully completing a major event that we planned and carried out and was a great end to that. Regarding the matcha I heard that it was very strong and good although a bit powdery. Somehow the menus here are always overwhelming even though I always get the same thing. I've frequented Umpleby's for the last couple years and am always disappointed. The service is almost always poor, with those working the counter treating customers like they are nuisances, and they tend to be out of key ingredients. They are always out of either bread, bacon, or something else that seems important to a breakfast sandwich or a lunch dish. On my last visit they told me there would be a 25 minute wait on breakfast sandwiches without an apology or even an acknowledgement of the inconvenience. The staff behind the counter was extremely rude and unhelpful. The egg sandwich made my lunch mate very sick after 4 bites ( and feeling fine all day before the sandwich) and she ended up vomiting in the garbage can in the middle of the bakery because she couldn't make it to the restroom. She apologized to the staff and they wouldn't even speak to her, no one asked if she was ok, needed water, if she needed help - nothing! One of the cuter bakeries I have seen. The baked goods are lovely and the lunch sandwiches are great, but the atmosphere is what's really signature about this place. It's a perfect place to study, meet a friend, grab brunch, or just kill time on a slow afternoon. Cozy, personal, and a universally appealing level of alternative - somehow Umpleby's manages to always be bustling but quiet enough to do work at the same time. Just far enough off Hanover's main street to feel secluded, but not too far a walk. A must-try for anyone passing through, and a time-tested staple for residents, I think it truly is the comfort food of cafes. read more

I was so excited when Umpleby's opened up! Hanover was (and is) in desperate need of a good bakery/cafe. Sadly, Umbleby's is just atrocious. I actually went there for lunch over & over again hoping that something would improve - that I would find some ray of hope that they knew how to cook or bake or make a sandwich that didn't fall apart, but no. There pastries not only taste bad but they actually look bad, which is rare - even bad bakeries can usually make pastries look good. Umbleby's pastries are poorly made and they sell them when they are obviously old & stale. I have to admit however, that I have never tasted their meat pies, which is their specialty. Being vegetarian, it's not an option for me. Perhaps the meat pies are fabulous. But since their egg & vegetable pies are dry & tasteless, and everything else is so intensely awful, it seems unlikely. Their coffee drinks are flavorless - the mocha is essentially a glass of milk with a hint of chocolate coloring. I really, really wanted Umbleby's to be good. It's such a shame that they have taken a good location & a big kitchen and produced such a horribly worthless bakery. There is still a strong market here for a good cafe & bakery. Hopefully, Umpleby's will go out of business & someone who knows how to cook will open up a nice bakery in their place. UPDATE: There seems to be some improvement! Homemade granola is good. Teas are fine.... I had some pastries that weren't bad. Also, their house salad is good.There may be hope for Umpleby's! If they make a few more improvements, like serving food after 3:00 (they are open until 6:00) or making their egg pies edible, I'll come back and add some more stars to my review. read more

This place really blows. People like it a lot, and that last little bit of self-doubt is the only think keeping my rating from being a 1. The workers are nasty, but I could deal with that. The food... ugh. Let me just put it this way: they microwaved a croissant. Man, that makes me sound like a snob, but I swear I'm not... I eat at Dunkin Donuts with unabashed regularity. But even at Dunky you can't find a croissant this rubbery. So yeah, I think if someone recommends Dunkin Donuts over an "upscale bakery," that's bad news. And that isn't even taking into consideration their prices... which also blow. Long story short: boo. Go to any of the other bakeries in town before this one (e.g. Lou's, the King Arthur Flour bakery inside of Baker/Berry library on campus, Morano Gelato -- limited pastry selection but delicious, Market Table, etc.). read more

I used to set my alarm on the weekend (yes, the weekend, so it must be special) to buy Umpleby's chicken pies at the Norwich Farmer's market. Now that they have an actual store, I can get them whenever I want. Single serving meaty pies with delicious crispy crust and savory filling that includes generous chunks of meat (mostly local ingredients, I think) make a great meal with a little side salad. The curry has just the right amount of spice and heat is my fav, but chk-mushroom-leek is tasty also. Occasionally I buy a few at, as they freeze well and are easy to reheat in the oven (defrost in microwave). OK, even seeing the movie Sweeney Todd could not keep me away from these meaty pies! Other baked goods are also quite tasty: maple brioche, chocolate almond croissant and caramel chocolate tart are my favorites. Minus one star for sometimes very long lines (but that's kind of a good thing, right?), occasional inability to sell a gift certificate, and counter staff that is sometimes slower than need be. read more

I really appreciate yelpers who mention problems they notice to the staff, and see how it goes from there. If you've been many times, there should be a good opportunity for it, and hell, it's worth a shot! I've admittedly only been here a few times, but it's always been good - 3.5 really - I'm giving it a 4, because.... the meat pies, the specialty, are definitely worth checking out if you're an omnivore. Yum. Being British, I like to think my judgement in the world of meat pies is fairly extensive - and Umpleby's do a darn fine job in this challenging and underrepresented culinary category. Flaky crust, tender and juicy fillings, interesting combinations (not just interesting, but good!) - it's nice :) They are cold, although I'm sure you can get them heated. Always blow on the pie! I've had good luck with the bakery sweeties, too. So...hm! I guess I'd recommend checking it out for yourself - this is one of those times when yelp is inconclusive. Ask them what's fresh! Hanover seems to be a town full of bakeries, cafes, bagel shops, coffee shops, and sweet shops, but there was something immediately appealing about this bakery cafe with the funny name. There were no cases of sweets on display in the window, no smells wafting out of the doors, and that somehow added to the mystery. I walked in through the double doors and found my mouth immediately watering. There were the cases, smells and temptations I had imagined! There were savory pies and sweet muffins, crinkly cookies and flaky croissants. The high ceiling added to the friendly bustle of the shop, and there were cute tables inside and out. The staff was friendly, and I left the place feeling like a million bucks. Everything I ate and drank was scrumptious, but the standouts were the chocolate crinkle cookies and the fresh, glass-bottled milk. Yum. read more

Customer service 101 says don't answer the phone when customers are waiting in front of you. They ignore waiting clients and simply take forever to serve folks. TL;DR: Umpleby's has the best vegetarian sandwich options in town, but there's always limited seating and wifi is slow. Hours are also limited. I come here to study when I need to focus without wifi, and for casual coffee dates or chats. It's the only coffee shop in town that's not the sterile feeling Starbucks, so I've also had professors use it for casual office hours. Food: Mungo Park (veggies and curry mayo) is my go-to; adult grilled cheese and Dominique Francon (hummus, avocado and cheese) solid options too. There's always a good vegetarian soup, bakery items are just ok, and lattes aren't bad (but not overwhelmingly better than Dirt). I come here for the flavorful vegetarian sandwiches, which are surprisingly hard to find elsewhere. Everything is priced reasonably - $8 for most sandwiches, $4 for a small soup and $5 for a bowl. The butternut squash soup is kind of watery - not sure their soups match up to their sandwiches and the soup options are always limited. Ambiance: Umpleby's is always crowded and the two person tables are small. It's a nice place to work for white noise, but only if you can find a place to sit. There's free wifi, but it's too slow to do anything that requires a lot of online browsing. Wow! What can I say about this place! As a self proclaimed sandwich aficionado I can say hands down that this is in the top 10 sandwich shops I have ever been in. The bread was home made, and anyone that knows sandwiches you know that one key component to a great sandwich is great bread! I got the chicken salad sandwich and let me just say that they did not skimp on the chicken. The amount of chicken in this sandwich was off the charts. For the price the sandwich was great. Eh I'm not a huge Umpleby's fan, but I know a lot of people are on campus. I've come here for random coffee chats with friends. Coffee is alright but nothing extraordinary. I've also had brunch here which hasn't been too bad. Just a typical sandwich combo. It's a cute little cafe with a nice atmosphere. They sell a number of pastry items and have a breakfast/lunch menu. On a given day, you'll probably see a lot of Dartmouth kids meeting up here or studying here.
