I was recently near Truckee, CA for 8 days with my girlfriend. She had expressed interest in mountain biking... and considering I'm heavily into mountain biking (11+ years) and want to mountain bike with her, I didn't want to mess up this opportunity! I called every mountain biking shop in Truckee. I decided to go with Dirt Gypsy Adventures and a private mountain biking clinic and mountain bike ride with our instructor (Mark). I couldn't have asked for it to go any better... my girlfriend learned a ton (and I learned a handful of things too) and it helped her feel more confident on the trails. At first, I didn't understand how we could spend 2 hours learning how to ride a bike - I quickly realized what I didn't know and how patient Mark was. I particularly loved his analogies and the way he articulated these concepts. We also rented a bike for the following morning and went out by ourselves, too. She's now riding with friends in the Bay Area this weekend and we've looked at a couple bikes for her. Mark, our instructor, did a great job - lifetime of experiences racing and teaching. The overall experience for rental was great: I found a suitable bike online, then gave a quick call to make sure my thinking was correct. All paperwork came via email, simple. Upon arrival my bike was ready to go in 5 minutes. We did a quick fit and, this is clutch, they spent time looking at my planned route and gave some feedback. My 11 year-old and I had a terrific guided shuttle ride with Mark today. 9 miles in the Tahoe Donner XC Ski area with 700 feet up and 2,000 feet down. He was patient and encouraging, and knew the right time to wrap up the ride given my kiddo's waning energy level. If you want to explore more of Tahoe's great but complex trail networks without having to navigate on your own, Dirt Gypsy is highly recommended. My brother and I we're looking for a guide to bring us for a half day activity as part of my wedding celebration and landed on Mountain Biking, despite having only ridden road bikes before. Ryan and Mark were great on explaining the basics to us and picking out a trail that matched what we were looking for. A tough climb to on the bikes to the top was made fun with good conversation and encouragement from Mark. After a few water breaks, we were rewarded with the fun of the turns and obstacles on the way down, while feeling totally safe on how being told before hand how to navigate each section. Ryan was super helpful when we came up for a week at the beginning of the season with a shuttle to Big Chief. We came up the first week in June, following some late season weather creating uncertain trail conditions. I called a week ahead, and Ryan took my info to call back and get us set up when he had better understanding of the trail conditions and what shuttles they'd have running during our stay. We got in on just the one trip, and on the way up he shared plenty of info about other rides with good conditions in the area. Had a great experience with these guys after a not so good experience with a shop in Incline Village. Staff is super kind and friendly. I logged 30 miles on one of their brand new carbon mountain bikes. (Carbon is definitely worth a little extra money; they perform like a Jeep and ride like a Cadillac). Dirty Gypsy is small business. This is one of the best adventures we've done in Tahoe/Truckee during our trip. Booked a mountain bike trail tour for the family and had a blast. They outfitted the four of us with amazing quality bikes (I got the E-bike mountain bike and wholly moly that was fun). It's like you're flying first class compared to coach.... I simply called up Ryan (I believe he owns it) and he set up the rest. Met at their store at 2:00, outfitted the bikes to our sizes and hopped on their van to the trailhead. From there, our awesome tour guide, Jesse, led us through these amazing back-country trails for the next few hours. She is super friendly and knowledgeable - and of course, a great rider. She gave us many tips and tricks along the way which really helped. We stopped at several points along the way for pictures and snacks and to just enjoy the scenery, which is stunning. We are not very experienced riders and within 15 minutes, we were all confidently riding through the beautiful trails and tracks. Basically, this was a blast. From the quality of the bikes to the expertise of Ryan and our guide, Jesse, couldn't of asked for a better experience. If you're going mountain biking, don't look any further. Best rates in the area and the bikes are high end. For $105 I got a Giant Trance Advanced Pro 29. For $85 my son rode a Giant Trance X 29. Ryan then pointed us in the right direction. You can ride from there without having to put bikes on racks and drive. I called a couple of days earlier to make the reservations, so when we arrived at 9am the bikes were ready with suspension adjusted to our weights. We were then able to ride before the heat got too high. read more

Great advice and good used bikes for fair prices. I didn't get to use their tour or transport services but they still have me great local tips and trails for nothing! Our last minute trip to get some clear air away from the fires and smoke that pounded California last month was highlighted by the trails they recommended. The clinic was super helpful for the whole family as we had no mountain biking experience. I'm so tired and dirty -- in a good way! Jessi was an amazing guide for a half-day mtb tour for my 2 sons and me. She took us to the perfect spot for our novice-to-intermediate little group.
