Usually I'm the ad-hoc type of traveler but since I was only going to be staying a few days in Tahoe I did some research on where to ride. And thankfully I did, as it paid off with huge benefits. Ken has it all. The know how, experience and drive to really make for an exceptional single day or multi session. I rented a carbon 27er from Cyclepaths that road like an absolute dream. I had no idea what was in store but Ken really had it all together. He knew the best places to ride that not too many people are familiar with. And we lucked out with excellent weather. In the end I was 100% satisfied and could only have asked for more time up there. I truly believe that I will be back to Tahoe/Truckee many more times in my life to not only shred the terrain, enjoy the outdoors of Cali but to see my good friend Ken too. -GC

I highly recommend these guys, whether you are a novice like us, or own your own bike shop and just need a guide around the best trails. Ken was amazingly responsive to us online as we were preparing for our trip. I wondered if the recommendation to upgrade the bikes was a scam, but no; it made my daughter and I enjoy the 'ride', plus we completely trusted our equipment in a way I may not have as an inexperienced rider allowing us to focus on technique. I trust they will guide you whether an upgrade makes sense. However be sure to do so a day or two before the ride so the shop can have the bike ready for you in the AM. I only wish I could do Ken's weekly clinics. The other guides seem super knowledgeable and passionate for the sport. They are the only ones in town who are certified with all the permits to the best of my knowledge.

I can't say enough good things about this park that operates on donations. The trails are always well maintained and the people from adult volunteers to riders of all ages are exceptionally kind. I don't ride, so often if my son falls or gets scared on a route where he can't see me, strangers have helped him out. Teenage boys have stood out to me as being especially welcoming and kind to a little guy who is still learning about etiquette and how to ride. If you're hanging out like me, it's also nice to know there are plenty of seating options including a nice table in the advanced section. There's beautiful trees that provide ample shade. Dogs are even allowed as long as they are on leash and they (and all human foot traffic) stay off the mound. There's a drinking fountain with delicious mountain water and two bathroom options - one is a porta potty right at the entrance and the other is the adjacent park's restroom. Bring snacks as they sell ice cream and a few bars. Raley's is down the street and it's a wonderful place to grab a pizza and some beers (upstairs loft has many on draft and is super kid-friendly).

I called every mountain biking shop in Truckee. I decided to go with Dirt Gypsy Adventures and a private mountain biking clinic and mountain bike ride with our instructor (Mark). I couldn't have asked for it to go any better... my girlfriend learned a ton (and I learned a handful of things too) and it helped her feel more confident on the trails. At first, I didn't understand how we could spend 2 hours learning how to ride a bike - I quickly realized what I didn't know and how patient Mark was. I particularly loved his analogies and the way he articulated these concepts. We also rented a bike for the following morning and went out by ourselves, too. She's now riding with friends in the Bay Area this weekend and we've looked at a couple bikes for her. Mark, our instructor, did a great job - lifetime of experiences racing and teaching. I couldn't have asked for more. The whole process facilitated by Ryan went extremely smooth. Thank you!

The next 3 miles will take you through a winding up-and-down adventure through pines and manzanita, with some technical rocky sections. After the long switchback you will be back to the road (006), and ready for the most beautiful sections of trail. Oh, did I mention that I use this trail for running? There are many who mountain bike this area, but I think that it is best explored on foot. I challanging series of short climbs and twisting turns will keep you on your toes, and the scenery will keep you charged. One of the great things about this trail is that it can be broken down into sections. Do the short loop (back on road 006), at about 3 miles, the mid loop (back on road 006 at your second opportunity) at about 8 miles, or the whole thing at about 10! so much fun. If you have done the whole loop and are looking for more - add on the "powerline" trail up the the top of the mountain. Great stuff!

Fun Mountain Biking Lessons with Awesome Coaches John & Eric - Great for Families!…read more Northstar offers excitement and fun for mountain bikers of all levels, from beginner to advanced, with a wide variety of trails to keep things both interesting and challenging. The resort offers biking lessons, and the group lessons are especially helpful for families wanting to learn some basic skills and gain confidence, in order to better enjoy their day on the mountain. The private lessons are well worth the money for families through advanced riders, and coaches John & Eric rock! They both have years of experience, can definitely help you skill up, and are personable and fun to hang with. For families, these fantastic coaches can turn a nice visit into an awesome day of adventures! With private lessons, riders of different skill levels can be accommodated, so that each biker is able to learn and progress. Thanks to their great coaching, we had family members learn enough to hit intermediate trails on Day 1! The other advantage of private lessons was that the kids/teens had a coach to accompany them since none of the adults could keep up! Parents will appreciate that they can watch and build trust in their coach during the first hour or so and then feel good about bowing out for libations, confident that their kids are riding the more challenging trails with a responsible, biking-experienced adult. Book a mountain biking lesson with Coach John or Eric the next time you're at Northstar! You'll be glad you did!!

No outside watercraft are allowed! This is to protect and preserve the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that are native to this habitat. Outside watercraft are risky because they may unknowingly transport foreign mollusks that are detrimental to the health of the trout living there. If fishing waders are used, there is a wader scrubbing/washing station located at the registration area. There are Nature Conservancy staff people on site if you have further questions. I found them informative and helpful. The loaner kayaks are located to the left side of the lake. The ones on the right side are for staff members. Every other week, ~only~ the kayaks are allowed out. Call to check the calendar schedule to avoid disappointment if you want to use one of the motorized boats. They require a motorized boater's card {available online at https://www.boat-ed.com/california/) There are single person and tandem person sit-on-top kayaks available. after 8AM Thursdays through Sundays. Loaner PFDs are also available in standard sizes. I recommend getting there early morning after opening while the water is calm. I was told that later in the day, the wind can pick up. This makes paddling a kayak to get backk across a lot more difficult. You may fish using barbless hooks. Only artificial lures are permitted. All trout caught must be released. Kokanee salmon are an invasive species here. Fishermen are allowed to keep those. Limit 5 per day, or 10 per trip, total. No live bait. There is no overnight camping on the Conservancy's grounds. There are campgrounds at nearby Webber Lake and Lake of the Woods.

How cool and inclusive is that? You get to Independence Lake Preserve from highway 80 by heading north on 89 and then turning L at the "Little Truckee Summit OHV/Snowmobile" area, which is on a road labeled "07." It's the turn you'd take if you wanted to go to the Mt. Lola trailhead or Webber Lake Campground, which are also nearby. You'll need an offroad capable vehicle to make it over a water crossing and two miles of rocky road. There are lots of signs that explain that no watercraft are allowed, because Independence Lake is one of the two places in the world with a wild, self-sustaining lake population of Lahontan cutthroat trout. That's why they care so much about not letting folks put their own watercraft on the lake: they might unintentionally introduce invasive species. When we pulled up (with a canoe on our Jeep: we didn't know the rules beforehand), a ranger came out to verbally explain things to us and to let us know about the free kayaks to use. I was pleasantly surprised that there were not a lot of bugs out in July 2022. The last time we were in this area, which was maybe July three years ago, there were so, so, so many bugs. We came armed with bug spray but didn't need it! There are hiking trails around the preserve as well. The lake is large and beautiful, and the view of Mt. Lola is spectacular.
