Beware this horrendous place that could cost you significantly more money than you planned for. TLDR: I was charged $200 for "damage" that wasn't my fault after almost getting injured riding one of their snowmobiles. When I mentioned their mobile could've gotten me seriously hurt, I was told too bad because I signed a waiver. The longer story: I was thrown onto an old snowmobile and almost got hurt because the snowmobile toppled over because it couldn't withstand basic snow bumps that our tour guides brought us to. When I returned, they realized the windshield had broken and charged me $200. Not only is this outrageous because it's much more expensive than what it actually costs (attached), but they showed no sympathy or empathy. They were actually mean, kept throwing the waiver in my face, and telling me it was entirely my fault. When I mentioned I could've gotten seriously injured, they just told me I took all liability in the waiver. So glad to be giving my money to people who don't care at all about my well being because they're not legally liable- hooray! I looked back at the waiver and there's a tiny little paragraph at the end that holds you liable for damages at a "cost determined by the company" - see attached for their cost sheet that wasn't shown at time of the waiver. Not only are these prices egregious, these items that might not even be your fault for being damaged might be thrown into your bill and they make it impossible for you to defend. The tour guides were incredibly nice. The cruel owners and expensive after charge and almost getting hurt makes this not worth it. I would HIGHLY recommend Cold Stream for your snowmobile tour. These folks are great. It was super easy to book our reservations online. They sent out text reminders for the event. When we arrived we were greeted and directed where to park. We booked a 2-hr public tour and lucked out because along with our group of 8 there was only one additional couple that was part of our tour. It basically felt like a private tour. After arriving you're asked to fill out waivers, then they set you up with helmets and goggles that are included as part of the package. From there you're introduced to your tour guide and they go over safety and riding techniques. As firs time snowmobilers some of the pointers the guide covers sound a bit overwhelming and even scary. However, once you get to riding, it's pretty straightforward. Some of the techniques covered are really more for "just in case" moments. The trails you go on are supposed to be the most "advanced" of all the tours in the area, but there wasn't a point where any of us felt the trails were too far from our comfort zone to ride. We felt safe at all times and were able to ride confidently. Our tour guide was Jake. He was fantastic and provided super clear instructions for riding and what to expect. During the ride he constantly checked back on the group to make sure we were all together and everyone was good. Jake took us to some great views and even provided a history lesson on what we were looking at. Helped us with our photos so we could all get in our group shots. I'm not sure if you can request tour guides, but I'd highly recommend him. The entire crew at Cold Stream was awesome. This was no doubt a 5 out of 5 experience for us. read more

What an epic experience this was! I HIGHLY recommend this company. We rented several snowmobiles for my husbands 40th birthday while on a trip with friends. The guides were friendly, excited to share their love for adventure and nature and give you the experience of a lifetime! The two hour tour was a perfect mix of learning to drive, casual driving through trails and no limits driving on a "track" in an open field. Our group of 15 has done many snow mobile tours but this was our first time at Coldstream. The tour was very slow and we were single file the entire time. When we did get to go out to the open field we were told to keep it counter clock-wise in a circle (wow so fun...). We had to stop every 10 minutes or so for the guides to check in with each other to make sure everything was ok. Our past tours we would split into smaller groups depending on experience level so we could all enjoy our time. The icing on the cake was that 2 of the sleds broke down and 1 sled had a check engine light the entire time. All other sleds had some sort of combination of issues from sputtering, crazy flickering lights on the dash, etc... The guides had to trade us snow mobiles so we could make it back to the bottom of the hill but we had to follow them on the broken sleds which had to go very slow. All in all we paid $3500 for a 2 hour tour and wasted 30-40 minutes stopping to figure out our broken sleds and another 30-40 minutes putting down the mountain behind a broken sled. I spoke to Ben on the phone and at least he was understanding and nice about the situation but unfortunately he didn't have much say in the matter and said it was up to the owner. They refunded us $235 which is not even close to enough to cover the wasted time. read more

Would give 10 stars if I could. I went with 3 other girls and we did the 2 Hour Public Snowmobile Tour on Double Snowmobiles. It was our first time and all of us girls had such a memorable experience. EVERYONE and I mean EVERY one was friendly and so informative starting from check-in at the parking lot with Ronan to our helmet fitting and instruction/safety overview with our tour guides, Gumby and Sheraton. The snowmobiles were easy to use and there's always one guide in the back that checks in on you if you're having any difficulty steering. The snowmobiles themselves were in great condition and the seats were very cushiony. The handlebars had heating options on them, but I recommend wearing handwarmers in your gloves/mitts. We wore our snow gear and half of us wore snowboard boots or waterproof hiking boots. The first half of the tour was going uphill, then it was a pitstop to look at the views up on top to take pics and learn some history, then we went to the meadows where it was a big open circle area and we all had a chance to test out our skills or learn how to use the snowmobile better for about 15min or so. ALLL of us girls loved that portion. Then we stopped at 2 or 3 other spots for scenic views and pics. Thennnn it was the downhill portion which I loved. There were these hilly areas where we got some air if we went fast enough, but was still very much in control. It was quite the adrenaline rush. Overall, I would 1000% recommend this to anyone who's looking to do a snowmobile tour in Truckee/Reno/Lake Tahoe area. It's close to Northstar so if you're going there for the weekend, make time for this tour the next morning. It was money VERYYY well spent. You sign a waiver and they do not offer insurance and automatically upon incident decide your machine is totaled and charge immediately over 1000$ to me. Definitely the place to go if you're trying to have a blast. My buddy went to a different spot a while back and said all they did was do laps around a parking lot. When I told him that I was sipping though the back country, he was super jealous. Got there early and found that parking was a little difficult but we managed to find a spot. Check in was quick and easy. Instructions were brief and straight to the point. When we got onto the trail, it was pretty awesome. We went at the perfect time when it was clear skies after we had a good amount of snow. Big props to the staff there too. They were very knowledgeable and made the trip that much better. Our guide, Wolf was able to evaluate our abilities quickly and have the perfect tour for us. We went on trails that were fresh and exciting. To be honest this was a waste of money. They were way overbooked for the tour. They told us that there was a maximum of 15 in a group. Our tour had at least 22. Too many people with the amount of guides. They are greedy and wanted the extra sleds for profit. Unfortunately, that business model does not provide a great customer experience. The guides stated that they would put the faster guests up front after the initial start. That never happened. We rode single file at parking lot speeds the entire time. My 2 daughters (normally easily entertained) were bored, as was I. Just imagine drive those little self driving cars at Disneyland... but at least there your kids get drive. We stopped way too often and for long periods of time (10-15mins). This tour felt like driving in heavy traffic with beautiful scenery. Even the "play" time in the meadow was boring. Going in a circle with 22 sleds, not that much fun. The guides are nice, but that's the only decent part of this tour. To quote my 9 yr old. "We should have went sledding ". I wouldn't recommend this tour , unless you like going slow and enjoy highway traffic jams. It's got the same feel. Maybe a mid-week tour with less guests would provide a better experience with more riding and less stopping. read more

We bought a private snowmobile tour, I was a beginner and my bf had past experience. When we arrived everyone was so cheerful and friendly. I had warm but not super waterproof shoes on and the staff was very accommodating at finding me a pair of their boots that fit (and put toe warmers in the boot for me). They also loaned us goggles for the ride bc it was 20 degrees out. Our tour guide was Margaret who was FABULOUS, she made sure we were comfortable the whole time and even shared some of her food w me :). Had encounters w a bunch of the staff, her friend Ben was also so very nice and warmed my hands for me that were so cold they felt like needles. EVERYONE there was nice, accommodating and patient. Awwwwwwesome! I haven't been snowmobiling since about 15-20 years ago in Yellowstone. Mainly the only difference I notice in CA, is that you have to have a license to drive one. In other states, they do not seem to care. I was about 8 years old when I drove one in Yellowstone in Montana. If you have ever ridden a quad than you will have no issue riding a snowmobile. Make sure you lean into the turns or you will flip or end up in a snowbank or tree like a few people did. Even though I shouldn't I kind of chuckled when people went off. We were in a group of 20 snowmobiles, 3 of which were the guides. We stop every once in awhile to make sure that people catch up and don't get lost. About halfway we stopped and they let us ride around in circles for about 10 minutes. If you have to go to the restroom, well.... you do what you gotta do and pop a squat behind a tree. They had a porta-potty but the snow was too deep to attempt to even get in it. Oh man it was a workout just walking from the snowmobile to the tree area about 250-300 feet away because every time you step, you sink about 2-3 feet. We did go pretty fast, maybe 20-35 miles an hour at some points. We did stop 2 other times to take pictures if we liked. I had recorded some of it so my phone died pretty quick. The guide was nice enough to take a picture of my daughter and I and send it to me. On my way there, I went to the office and not the actual location, so I wasn't able to be there an hour early. But that was ok. We hand over our license, get a helmet and they went through the safety brief. Yes my review is kind of backwards. Make sure you have nice thick socks on and a good idea to have a scarf or something to put around your nose and mouth. I didn't and ended up like Rudolph. I didn't even think about it until seeing other people with them on. I had a ton of fun, didn't crash. But my daughter who is 11 and rode on the back was terrified. She wanted to get off and said I was going too fast. I told her we had to keep up with everyone. I was in the first 4 snowmobiles at the beginning and ended up after the guide at one point because people had accidentally fallen off course..... A few people said they were shocked I stayed up with my daughter on the back. Well.... I know how to ride quads, dirt-bikes etc. So a snowmobile isn't much different. Definitely would recommend and come back! The guides were awesome. If anyone had any issues they helped out. read more

Guides were tentative to riders (checking on them), fun, and flexible. Nice views, photo ops, and opportunities to do some self-paced riding on the snowmobiles, rather than just fall-in-line touring. A little something for any rider. Having been to 3 different snowmobiling experiences in the area, everyone in my group liked this one the most ... particularly for the reason of the guides allowing the riders to do things at their own level of comfort, and giving those that wanted a chance to really enjoy the ride vs being strictly about pacing a tour, and having time to enjoy everything rather than just moving everyone throw.
