I adopted a squatter's dog when my friend saw the owner overdose at 5 am and took his dog, so the police wouldn't take her to the pound. When the dog arrived at my house it smelled like the elephant exhibit at the zoo, and the worst smelling homeless person on earth. She would whimper when i took her inside, so i had to stay outside with her for 3 hours until my roommates woke up. one of the people i live with is a 5 year old girl, so i thought it would be fun if we took the dog to wash it i have never liked dogs or owned one before, obviously, but i was determined to make sure this dog was at least clean if it was going to stay at my house. so we took the dog to dirty dog, and i asked them for their advice on whether or not we should wash her ourselves or have them do it. we decided to do it ourselves, however, i have never washed a dog before, so the people that worked there helped me wash her face and showed me how to use all of the tools and products. on of my friends told the people working my sad story and they were so kind and helpful. i could never ask for a better transition into the dog owner kingdom thanks people that work at dirty dog!!! you helped the grossest dog i have ever seen become the cutest dog i have ever seen read more

I've taken my two small poodles to Dirty Dog on 3 occasions now for bathing and grooming services. Noah called me to discuss exactly the cuts I wanted and he offered some recommendations. Both of my girls looked perfect ! Noah does an excellent job and is always sweet to my girls. My only reason for not giving them 5 stars is based on price. Self serve dog wash is convenient but that's about it. The brushes are usually dirty and full of hair. I just went there and was the only person washing my dog so checked 3 stations and every brush had hair in it. Keep a cleaner place and it'll be 5 stars. read more

If you want to pay someone to let you bring your dog to their establishment and wash it yourself using their shampoo and brushes, then this is the place for you. My boy Puck is over 70 pounds, so it costs about $16 or $17 to wash him at Dirty Dog. He hates it, but he hates all forms of bathing, and it's convenient for me. Just walk him up the steps...OK, drag him up the steps into the big tub, hose him down and start shampooing. The staff is nice and helpful and will usually come around to see if you need anything. I also felt bad at the grotesque amount of fur that P left in the tub, but I guess they've seen worse and it's kind of why you go to a place like that--to keep it from clogging your own tub. I may try the "De-furrminator" treatment because Puck is a shedding machine and I have light-colored tile in my place. Hair bunnies (I call them Mini-Ps) abound and frolic about when you open or close a door, so I really should do something. read more

Holy Cow!!! I took two 4 pound yorkies in for a nail trim and it cost me $32!!!! Was i ever shocked. I don't cut them myself at home because they wiggle so I took them to a professional hoping they had a better technique. Their technique was to get me to hold them still while she snipped the nails. I took my 5 month old here to get her nails trimmed. She's a bit shy, but very friendly. The lady who did her nails was very friendly and patient with her, she first sat down on the floor gave her a treat and introduced herself. She was patient and calm and that helped Hazel with being confident. It was her second time getting her nails done and she knocked it out quickly and pain free. We had an experience at Dirty Dog in which the groomer did everything we told him not to do (e.g. please don't shave his tail or cut his Labradoodle "beard" off...etc.). No calls to check during the cut to ask follow-up questions. Just went ahead and did it like he wanted to, then called to say our dog was ready to be picked up, oh, and by the way, "We had to shave him really short. I'll take $10 off the price of the cut." Small comforts after the fact. I called to give feedback after the appointment, just to let them know what had happened, and while they were nice enough ("we'll make a note in your file"), it didn't make me feel like it wouldn't happen again. read more

I've been taking my dogs here for years. One of my dogs is getting old and has many issues including chronic ear infections and skin allergies. She also hates to have her paws touched. But the groomers always do a great job with her and are so patient. I can tell by the results and their attitude that they are kind to the pets and take their time. Disappointed in this location. We've been to the north location before and the girl did an AMAZING job with our Goldendoodle. Yesterday I brought both our pups in (goldendoodle and maltipoo) which they are both the kind of dogs to have matting in some places so that's understandable when they have to shave off that part. But when it comes to the goldendoodle I still wanted him curly and have some fluff. I told her the puppy cut, usual goldendoodle trim. Just a trim! He came out completely shaven and looks like a poodle. Everything is wrong. He had very thick beautiful hair and she shaved it all off. I don't understand how that's a goldendoodle haircut. So now to my maltipoo, he has the worst allergies and I really look forward to have his ears all plucked and cleaned out. When we got home I noticed his scratching so I looked in his ears to see that they weren't cleaned out AT all. Plucked, yes. But full of black dirt!! I called and complained. They refunded us back ONLY $20 after paying $164 - ridiculous. The worst. Will not be back. read more

Really friendly people work here, and it's a good concept-they have all the bath supplies, and you can wash your dog and not create an unholy mess of dog hair in your bathtub at home. Dirty Dog has self-service options, or they do full grooming by appointment. If you choose to wash your dog in their tubs, they have an apron for you (smart), as well as shampoo, conditioner, all the brushes, etc. I plan on going back. More bonus points: they keep the water at a safe but warm temperature and offer nail clipping. read more

I love love love Dirty Dog! We take our Rosko to see Summer for their full service wash and nail trimming. Rosko is a very shy, nervous dog and he does not trust people easily, but when I dropped him off today, his tail started wagging as soon as he saw Summer! I've heard the horror stories about taking the dog to the groomer, but Rosko always leaves Dirty Dog smelling fantastic and with tail wagging. I highly suggest Dirty Dog! read more

They have easy online appointment booking and the drop offs/pick ups are easy too. I recently brought my dog to Dirty Dog to help a friend's charity. While the concept was great, overall they have totally missed the mark. The space is sparse, dark, uninviting and overall unfriendly. There was one employee who was the least bit helpful. For a first-timer, I would have expected a great "Here's what we're all about". I think the concept has great potential. The Dirty Dog could really live up to a self-serve dog salon idea with simple things such as a welcoming, relaxing environment, a friendly staff, and little extras such as bows or treats or toys. Similar small things could be done for the owner. If I am paying to wash my own dog, I would expect it to be an overall experience. read more

We've been to Dirty Dog on South Lamar several times to take advantage of the self service washing area after picking up our dog from a trip to the boarder. Each time the shop was clean and the staff was helpful in getting us whatever we needed. Today was our second trip in to use some of the other services they offer, namely nail trimming and their full-service bath. Our dog is a rather large (~100lbs.) Lab, who despite his age is still quite energetic and playful. This combined with his fear/dislike of anyone touching his paws makes it really difficult to clip his nails. Jenny at the South Lamar location must be a dog whisperer. She's very understanding and patient, but makes quick work of the clipping once the time is right and the opportunity presents itself. Thus far, she's one of few people who've been able to get the job done right and in such little time. A+ read more

Actually the location I went too was 750 W. 5th Street (inside Austin Urban Vet). Blaire the manager/owner was in the shop and was a delight. The shop- clean, efficient, easy, and my little boston was brand spanking new in about 7 minutes. All that for around $14 I thought was great. She also had a tip about a cat groomer and gave me her number. Easy, inexpensive, much easier than cleaning him at home (think water, suds, and hair everywhere).....why would I go anywhere else? The first time I took my pup to a groomer (not at Dirty Dog), they said he was too scared to get his haircut. I still had to pay since they gave him a bath and a trim, but I was sad to go back home with him just as shaggy. I decided to not go back to the other place, because I felt groomers should have the strategies to deal with nervous dogs. I saw from reviews that other dog owners had similar problems with nervous puppies but had luck with Dirty Dog, so I decided to give them a try. Although my pup was still nervous, they managed to cut his hair and he looks fabulous. I am thankful for their patience and determination to get the job done! He bounced back to the happy dog he normally is as soon as I picked him up so I know he wasn't too traumatized and was treated well. I will definitely be back! read more

Won't take my Lucy anywhere else! This is, by far, the best Dirty Dog branch in Austin! The staff is friendly, efficient, and Lucy appeared to have enjoyed the visit. Trust me, she would have shown all the signs of a schizophrenic dog if she'd been mistreated, but she was sassy, licking them to death, and prancing like a pony. I have a 7 month old Cocker Spaniel, which can be a pretty hairy dog if left untrimmed. I called Dirty Dog and was assured by them that they trim a lot of Cockers. Hah! When I picked up my pup about 3 hours later, she didn't eve looked trimmed. She looked as if she had stuck her paw in a light socket. The shampoo job was nice, but i wasn't looking for my dog to turn into a big, fluffy ball of fur. The reason I took her there in the first place was because her hair was covering her eyes. That wasn't even touched. Maybe they forgot that I wanted her trimmed, but it sure didn't show at the cash register. This was the worst cut I'd ever seen. From now on I'll trim her myself, which I should've done in the first place. The bottom line is that I will never take my pooch there again and recommend that my friends do the same. read more

I took my dog Pralenne in for a hair cut. We did the self-serve because I had the time and it only costs $22. They were really nice and helpful and had great supplies. You have to bathe your dog first before you can cut their hair. It took me 2 hours from start to finish. A groomer gave Pralenne a little Halloween colored bow when we finished and she looks like a new puppy! I was really happy because I have always groomed my dog at home, but it's messy and clippers are so expensive. I recommend their self-serve grooming to anyone with a little more time than money who doesn't mind getting a little messy. :) When you're done, you leave the mess there and take home a clean, well-groomed puppy! read more

I have been a customer at Dirty Dog for a while but after this incident I plan on finding a place where customers are treated with respect and responsibly. I made an appointment to have my dog groomed two weeks in advance. The day I am taking the dog for his appointment I am on my way and I get a call from Dirty Dog that my appointment must be rescheduled because the groomer was a "no show" . My appointment was rescheduled for today (Saturday) at 8:00AM. So I show up this morning at 8:00AM and the business is closed. I waited 30 minutes until the attendant finally showed up. When I explained to her the situation, she proceeded to say that their business is not open on Saturdays until 10:00AM. So why am I given an appointment at 8:00AM on a Saturday and reminded the day before?? My time is as valuable as theirs!! Their customer service is lacking ...to say the least!! read more

i took my dog there for his first grooming. they told me they could only cut him up to an inch long because his fur wouldn't grow back properly if at all. i trusted that and they were right after doing more research. i also found out my breed of dog regulates his body temperature with the undercoat, but they did a blowout anyway and that's horrible for my breed. i felt rushed out. i wasn't allowed back to see and was asked to leave. i was told on the phone there would be styles to pick from. when i asked about that, the groomer said there wasn't any such selections. made an appointment for 9:30 and they said it would be between 1:30-3:00 when he was done and that i'd receive a call to update me when he'd be ready so i could start making my way there. i was called at 12:30 and they told me my dog was already done and waiting. to top all that off he had mats behind his ears. i'll never go back here. it was unclean and unprofessional. read more

Was in a few months ago to get my goldendoodle groomed. What a wonderful staff! Her hair was matted and so even though they had to shave her down more than I had wanted, they gave her a soothing skin treatment and she was evenly shaved. My dog was super happy and cool and I was very impressed. Definitely a great groomer to go to if you have a goldendoodle! :) read more

*Avoid boarding your dog here.* Rude staff. Incompetent and frustrating. They just started doing daycare and overnight boarding but don't have the systems or staff in place to run it properly. I called to schedule an appointment and kept getting transferred to different people. No one knew how to set up the appointment for boarding. Then I was told the computer was slow and they had to take my info to call me back. They lost my paperwork when I turned it in and sent updated vaccination records - twice! When I went to drop off my dog for his stay, they have the reception within the grooming area and the staff member fumbled like she didn't know what she was doing. She honestly looked nervous. I had to wait 15 minutes for someone else to come from the back boarding area to get my dog. I assume some staff manage grooming and others run the boarding. How about cross-training staff so they facilitate all services? Don't start offering new services in your business if you're not set up to run it well. I literally don't feel safe taking my dog here. I recommend you look elsewhere. read more

This location seems very disorganized. I made an appointment ahead of time and when I came in my information had been confused with another costumer's. I brought my dogs' shot records, and they weren't reviewed. I was told my two dogs would be getting groomed by separate groomers, which seemed fine, as I gave simple but specific directions for their haircuts, which they wrote down. Five hours later in the afternoon I got a call that one dog was ready, so I asked about my other dog and they hadn't realized both were mine so I had to wait another few "hours" for pickup. When I finally got them back in the evening, one dog came out fine and the other had been shaved except for her head and tail. I'm not sure how this happened because I asked that both dogs be trimmed. She's been getting haircuts for 9 years at various groomers, and she's never been butchered this badly. On top of this, they sent me home without my dog's collar, and when I came back for it the next day it had been lost. read more

We only wish we could give this place a rating lower than one star. If all you want to do is to wash and dry your dog, then you can do that at Dirty Dog, but I would strongly caution you about their knowledge / grooming equipment / services. Before going to Dirty Dog on S. Lamar today (5/27/2013) we telephoned to ask questions about their self-service facilities, etc. to wash, groom (brush / cut) and trim nails for our female Bichon dog. We were primarily interested in trimming our dog's hair slightly. Having been assured that they had what we needed we proceeded to take our dog there. We bathed our dog and used their high powered dryer to dry her. Then we moved over to the self service grooming table and after brushing our dog we asked for the fur / hair clippers. We told the young lady employee that we wanted to keep our dog's hair long and that we were only interested in a little trim. The young lady brought us the clippers and assured us it that it had the guard on it that would leave our dog with a long coat - as it allegedly had the same guard on it used by their on-site groomer / manager to groom long hair dogs. With her repeated assurance we proceeded to use the clipper on our dog's rump area to test a spot. The clippers ended up cutting most of our dog's hair off and basically left a bald spot. The young lady then said she would talk to her manager (busy in the back, behind a closed door) about what happened and the guard for the clippers. The manager did not come out to speak to us. The young lady returned (after speaking to her manager) and now confirmed that they had a plastic guard that should have been used on the clippers. She had it in her hand, but then admitted she did not know how it should be attached or used. This is from one of only two people working at Dirty Dog (you had the manager / professional groomer - that never came out to speak to us - and this young lady). I would have thought that at a Dog washing establishment with a groomer on the premises that the staff would be knowledgeable about the guards needed for self-service clipping of a dog's hair / fur. Having not been provided with useable clippers for the guard, etc. and having been told that the clippers we tried to use were the only clippers available for self-service use, we abandoned any further efforts to try and hide the damage to our dog. We then proceeded to ask if they had scissors we could use to trim the hair around our dog's muzzle. The young lady provided us with a pair of scissors which would not cut. We then asked if they had any better scissors and were then provided with a pair that would cut. Needless to say we would have expected that a self service Dog washing business, where full service grooming is also provided that they would not only have the proper grooming equipment but that employees would know how to use it and that a manager would care enough to talk with customers (that had been provided with the wrong information by employees of the business). There are other dog washing / bathing and self service grooming establishments in Austin. I would highly recommend you check out the competition and not go to Dirty Dog. read more
