Lekeisha deserves two shrines in her honor in recognition for customer service that sets a new all time high bar for any industry. To be frank, I was not happy when I first called and was transferred to Lekeisha in the hopes we could come to an agreement on an energy plan. From the very beginning of the conversation I could see the smile on her face as it was conveyed over the phone. This is IT! I fear that this is a quality that has been lost. Well, this conversation should be used as an example for all to hear. From the beginning, Lekeisha began establishing report and empathy with my concerns. Lekeisha actively listened rather than trying to talk over or interrupt. Again, I could clearly hear the smile on her face during the call. On July 15, 2026 I called into customer service to inform Discount Power that I would be late with my bill. The agent immediately started yelling, berating, and threatening to shut off my account. I informed the agent I had an appointment with Dallas County Health and Human Services for utility assistance, but agent interrupted me and said there was no such agency. She also said I was on a four year energy plan, but I never signed up for that plan. I called Discount Power on August 13, 2026 to make them aware of issue, and asked them to release me from the contract without an early termination fee. They offered an apology for the occurrence, but declined releasing me from contract and the $250 early termination charge. I refuse to do business with a company that treats its customers with a lack of respect, and abusive conduct. I realize that abusive customer service does not constitute a breach of contract, but an obligatory half-hearted apology falls far short of resolving the issue. If you're really seeking lower energy rate, look at Rhythm Energy and Energy Texas. Rates far less than Discount Power. read more

I was a long term and used to be a customer that thought they were a good electric company. That all changed in 2024. My contract was up and I started looking for a good, long-term deal. The rules about electric rates had also changed near this time or so I believe. The rates posted at this point in time did include the Centerpoint charge. My contract rate, that was expiring, was 9.9 cents/kWh. When I got online (powertochoose.org) I saw rates that were 13.9 to 16.9 cents/kWH which was alarming. I called Discount Power to see if they had any additional rates that were not listed on powertochoose.org or if they had any 'deals' for existing customers to continue their business. The salesman was nice enough and went to tell me that my old rate of 9.9 cents/kWH did not include the Centerpoint charge and that the plan I was looking at (14.9 cents/kWH for 60 months) was essentially the same as my expiring plan. I asked a number of times for him to clarify this and he reiterated that my electric bill would be essentially the same. I finally agreed and signed up for that 'deal'. The following month, I got my electric bill and it was 45% higher than before but it was July and it was a hot month. The following month my bill was higher again and 50% higher than the 2 previous August bills. I looked at the bills and compared to the previous years bills for the same time period and found the issue. My new contract rate was correct; however, my old, expired plan for 9.9 cents / kWH, did include the Centerpoint charge. I felt like they lied to me and I remembered that they record all the phone conversations. I called their customer service department to complain and after explaining that I felt like I was 'bait and switched' they said that they would go to the 'archives' and listen to the phone call to see if I was indeed 'lied' to by their representative. After waiting for 30 minutes, the new customer representative came back and said that they had listened to the phone conversation and the part where their representative stated that my bill would be the same wasn't in the recording. I asked if I could listen to the recording, they said that wasn't allowed. After making me feel like I was crazy, I accepted this plan as my plan and knew I'd be moving in the future. Move ahead to 2 weeks ago, I moved out of the house back in September 2025 but it took until April 2026 to sell the house. I got my final bill with a contract termination fee. I called customer service and asked to speak with a customer service manager. After waiting for a while, a CSM took my call and I again explained what happened in 2024 and they went back and found the call recording and listened again yet somehow didn't hear where their salesperson told me my bill would not be changing much. I again asked if I could listen to the recording and I was told they don't allow that. Again, I feel like maybe I'm crazy and they could have resolved that by letting me listen to the conversation. I make my living working in sales and working with numbers and I'm positive of what was talked about and the explanation of the rates yet they won't let me hear the recording that would ease my concerns (or prove me right). I asked if since I had fulfilled half of my contract period if the early termination fee could be cut in half; they said no. I told them they left me no option but to write bad reviews about their company, their customer service and their business practices. Discount Power did get my account straightened out. I actually, recently renewed my contract with them again. Like most Energy providers, you have to be careful deciphering their offered rates. I actually found a better value contract on their website (or it may have been the Power to Choose website), than was offered by Discount Power as a supposed "discounted renewal rate" You know, the renewal rate they try to stiff you with for being a loyal customer! Lol. To me, they are all somewhat deceptive in quoting rates, but after a little experience you know what to look for. My usage is all over the place here in Texas as I have Natural Gas for heating, stove and hot water. They do not provide any communication before applying penalties for delayed payments, yet they quickly add multiple fees such as disconnection, reconnection, and late charges across subsequent bills. They should at least give a courtesy call about in case of miss payment or delay. They just do on purpose to add penalities. There are also many hidden fees that are not clearly disclosed. I wish i could give them less than 1 star....ABSOLUTELY terrible customer services. They screwed up my electricity cut off service TWICE. First when I moved they did not have my power on the day i requested, even though I asked multiple times to confirm the dates. Then, once we sold our old house, I called to get my power shut off, and confirmed 3 days in a row for a specific date, and was told "rest assured it will not be shut off until that date" even though their autmoated messge said a different date when I called to confirm. And of course, it shut off on the earlier date, and we were without power over a weekend, the weekend before we closed on the house! This was a HUGE inconvience and caused issues with our buyers, as they needed to do a walkthrough. I called to complain about this and their only solution was to try and put me on a month to month plan for activating services for 2 days, but also not guarenteeing that the service would even be activated over the weekend, which i already knew it wouldn't becasue centerpoint doesn't work over the weekends unless its an emergency. They offered no real solution and to be honest I want out of my contract for my current home but of course there is fee's for that even though THEY SCREWED UP! We had fraud on our bank account (not our fault) so payment returned and they refused me to be able to pay over the phone or online for the next 6 months I'm expected to go pay at a money gram. Money gram would not go through and they disconnected my electricity. It's been three days disconnected with no way to get it connected and now ruined groceries. They were fine that I wanted to cancel due to not having digital payment options. But I can't cancel because I can't pay them to cancel. I have called 30 times we have spent hours on the phone and went to pay money gram and you can't provide the code they needed to send you the money. Day three without power and no way to pay and now ruined groceries. Calling other companies to see if I can pay them to get me out of your insane company and we are canceling our business accounts as well hope it was worth not taking my payment in any form possible. read more

I just signed my second three-year contract with Discount Power Texas. It was supposed to come with Vivent security camera and smart thermostat. Vivent spent half a day at my home but was unable to connect the equipment. Since I was now locked into a long period of time with Discount, I called them back to see what they could do for me since I was unable to enjoy the "free gift" of Vivent. The short answer, after 1.5 hours on the phone talking to three people in other countries, is NOTHING. They would not let me change my contract or give me a better rate. The escalations/retention rep finally agreed to issue a whopping $10 bill credit. They do not value their loyal customers' business and I will never renew with them again. I also plan to file a complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas. They have a Google 3.7 star review average for a reason. I will see how much I can lower that, because they people deserve to know that they operate in a shameful, unethical manner. read more

Discount Power has some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. They provide zero communication before slapping you with penalties for even a slightly late payment, yet they're lightning-fast to pile on multiple fees -- disconnection fees, reconnection fees, late charges -- that show up across several bills. Not everyone has perfect credit or payment history, and sometimes legitimate issues arise. In my case, USAA (my bank) detected potential fraud on my credit card, froze it for my protection, and immediately notified me. The same day I got the alert from both USAA and Discount Power about the declined payment, I updated my card within 2 days that was on file with Discount Power and even called them to confirm the new card was active. Despite this -- less than 48 hours later -- they still charged me a $30.25 disconnection/reconnection fee. A simple courtesy call or email before charging these fees would go a long way, especially when the customer has already resolved the issue. It feels deliberate, like they're looking for any excuse to add penalties. On top of that, there are numerous hidden fees that are never clearly explained upfront. Based on my experience, I strongly advise against choosing Discount Power. There are far better electricity providers out there that treat customers with basic respect and transparency. Our account was purchased through SWP&L after an acquisition (as many below have already explained) without our consent or approval and with no communication. Our original rates were not honored although they say that they were. Because they're technically a private company, they can charge you anything on top of the "centerpoint delivery fee" which is in fact what they are currently doing to us. Our monthly bill averaged $200 but now are receiving monthly bills close to $500 even though we keep our thermostat to nearly 80 degrees. I also don't understand why we have to pay a cancellation fee of $125 when we had no choice in selecting them. There's something seriously shady going on with this company and I find a lot of these 5 star reviews laughable. Wouldn't be surprised if they were creating fake google accounts to tip their overall rating in their favor AND these ridiculous responses to previous reviews that they "care about you" and your business and "you are family" is complete and utter BS. The toll free number they're providing in these responses will get you a customer service rep that will not transfer you to a supervisor and ultimately result in continuous lies to get you off the phone- because they can't tell you anything outside of their script. It's completely useless and you will get nowhere by calling them. We've wasted hours upon hours contacting them resulting in 0 solutions. I've already made a formal complaint to BBB and will do everything I can to warn friends and family (and anyone else that will listen) to STAY FAR FAR AWAY from this company. I literally just received a promo referral credit email from them as i'm writing this for $50 off my bill to refer a friend. WHAT A JOKE. Nothing but positives! I know a lot of people have had negative experiences but I have only been happy. I originally started with TruePower, but they passed over a few accounts to Discount Power and mine was one of them. TruePower had an amazing rate and Discount Power honored it without question. Their app is also super easy to use and gives you great insight to your electricity usage. TruePower didn't even have an app and I couldn't set up autopay. I also received amazing customer service when I did encounter a problem. My contract renewal didn't transition over easily between TruePower and Discount Power. But when I showed them documentation they very quickly agreed to honor it. All of this was done through email but I would get several responses in a single day! I didn't have to wait days on end for a single response like other customer service departments- this was a big deal for me. Even when they didn't have documentation of my renewal, and my old contract expired, they didn't disconnect my electric. They simple moved me to a month to month plan and encouraged I renew a more cost effective plan. To me, that shows they care. And because of their speedy communication I was never even charged a monthly fee. All around, I have had amazing service and whole heartedly recommend them. read more

I'm so pissed off right now I could spit nails. So my electric bill doubled this month with a so called $109 service call I am being billed I called on this morning. Direct power after being on the phone for half an hour said they don't know what it is and had to open an investigation which I should get a response on by Jan 30. Not even 5 mins late I get a response telling me that it's from centerpoint and I have to call them. So I called them and another 20 mins conversation they say that I requested the service on a power outage back in November they came out and there was no issue so I got charged. I never made that call. I told them that. So they tell me to call direct power back and tell them to file a dispute and they will review it. So I do that now they say they filed it but it can take 2 months for centerpoint to review but that I have to pay it. Told them that if I'm stuck with this bill I'm not renewing my service. Discount Power bought my electric contract without my consent or knowledge. However the contract I signed up for included autopay. They failed to transition my autopay but I had no idea this happened. One afternoon center point knocked on my door to tell me they received a disconnection notice. He said if they turn it off (about 4 pm) you could be without power for 48 hours as even if you make a payment and they get a reconnect order they may not be back for a day or two. This is nonsense. The way Direct Power does business is awful to not communicate with customers. And then be a bully and thug to cut your power. People actually need electricity for a/c and working from home means you need internet. Extortion and bullying why? Because you can't even communicate that you are incompetent about maintaining the autopay service I already signed up for that was part of my electricity contract? They not only mess that up, they also billed me $60 as a disconnect fee twice. An extra $120. Naturally I switched companies and they charge another $250 early termination fee. But I never contracted with them. Contract should not be transferable especially if they break the contract by not being able to maintain the autopay that was part of the original contract I made initially. I was under the impression that I would receive a special promotion discount for a certain amount of kW that I would use per an advertisement I saw for Discount Power. Spoke with a previous representative from Discount Power prior to my registration to confirm if this was true just like some other competitors would offer. The representative told me that there is and that I would need to opt into the value plus plan package. I received my first bill for June 2022, and was charged a full high rate bill amount for the service used. I contacted the customer service team again, questioning them where or when will I receive my special promotion of the plan I chose. The representative told me "oh, we don't have promotions or discounts..." I explained to the representative what I was told regarding my plan about what the previous agent stated, that I will receive for the certain amount of kW I use. The representative repeated again the same thing. This is absolutely false advertisement and I was lied at just so Discount Power can lock me in a contract. I've been using Discount Power for the past several years and customer service has become horrible over the past 2 years. They have repeatedly messed up my account - when it was time for my plan to renew in October 2023, I chose a plan online and for some reason they couldn't process it properly for MONTHS and since then, I have had non-stop issues with being charged incorrect rates. I recently moved and tried to transfer service (because I didn't want to deal with finding a new provider right away - my mistake), and even though their website says it is easy to transfer the same plan, they refused to honor the plan I had and kept claiming my plan was expired, even though my online account clearly shows a contract end date in 2025. No customer service agent ever reads notes from prior conversations so you have to repeat yourself over and over again. They are so disorganized, do not honor your signed contracts and rates, and in general are just so difficult to work with. I will gladly pay a higher electricity rate to another company now. This company has really declined in terms of customer support. I suggest checking your bills regularly because they seem to be adding unexpected charges and different rates each month. I recently switched back to another electricity provider that offers much better rates and didn't require a contract, plus I always paid my bills on time. Since leaving, I've been charged $612.90 in advance, even though I wasn't under contract and my account was up to date. Now, customer service is unable to provide me with clear answers; they keep putting me on hold and then hanging up. It's extremely unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend using this company at all--there are much better options available. Trust me, I'm with one now. The collection agency continues to call and harass for payment that I have proven is not mine. Discount Power doesn't care they sent a fraudulent debt, they don't respond to emails either. I was switched by my provider to them. Service was fine, wasn't with them long before my contract expired and I moved on. Well the trouble begins as they have turned my name over to a collection agency under someone elses account number and service address. I have provided the collection agency with my cleared balance and all payment proof yet continue to receive harrasing calls because they claim they "validated" the debt because they claim they mailed a letter to an address I've never lived at where the service was provided under someone elses account number, all after I told them that wasn't my address. This is a nightmare. I've sent everything showing a cleared balance and nothing... just calls demanding I pay someone elses bill. read more

So if you're considering Discount Power but you've got another Company with comparable rates - do yourself a favor and avoid Discount Power. No one called or emailed me to notify me. It was 100 + degrees and I'm a single mom with a child. I talked to Victor over the phone and he was terrible to talk to. No empathy or concern for my situation in turning my electric back on in a timely manner. The worst electric company I've ever had. Not to mention my bill going up.
