I cannot say enough about Discover Preschool. We have been a part of this community for 3 years. Both my daughter and son have attended this school and honestly I wish this was an elementary school so they could keep going. Roxy Mendoza the Director is great. She keeps parents informed and update on activities and events. Her office is always open if parents or children have questions or concerns. I always felt supported by her staff. The teachers are also great. I feel like both of my kids learned so much. I love all the arts and crafts the kids brought home and the kids enjoyed going on mini field trips. The class sizes are small so the kids really get to bond with the other children. We were also able to celebrated birthdays and holidays it was great. The campus feels safe and secure as it is a closed campus. It's also a nut-free campus for those children with nut allergies. I cannot say enough good things about my experience. Discovery is a small preschool with a community and family feel. My family was nervous sending our little one to school for the first time, but we immediately felt at ease knowing how friendly and attentive the staff is. My son went to Discovery Preschool and had the best experience. Ms. Celia was a wonderful and understanding teacher to guide my son. He has a speech delay and went into Discovery with limited words but finished the program with so many new words and so many friends. Discovery Preschool is the greatest preschool in Long Beach. The teachers are so patient with the children and I love the play to learn approach. We were very happy with our experience at Discovery. The director Ms. Roxy was attentive and communicative and made a genuine connection with our child and family. The teachers were kind and enthusiastic. We loved Ms. Fabiola. I appreciate how attentive they are to the kids' social and emotional development. The small, safe campus and part-time schedule was a great fit for our family. My oldest child went there for 2 years. The only reason my youngest didn't attend is because we moved out of the area. My only criticism is the staff turn over. We had to help our son adjust to a couple transitions when staff left, but I suppose that's to be expected with part-time positions. We had a great experience with discovery preschool. We saw our son Jax thrive so much. It was very difficult the first week since he was really attached to me (mom) but the staff at discovery preschool helped my son thrive. Discovery is a 3.5hr program 2-5days a week. They offer an hour before and after program if you would like to add on. I feel this program is best for parents who don't need all day care, but would like to socialize their child, and prepare them for kindergarten. Both of my girls have really blossomed at Discovery. They do a great job at inspiring confidence, providing structure, and allowing the child free time to explore activities of their own interest. Both of my girls have allergies. They provided a safe environment for them, and were always mindful and inclusive during snacks and parties. They make you feel like family, and all the teachers get to know all of the students. Miss Roxy, the friendliest director, is often outside and available during drop off and pick up. They communicate with the Brightwheel app, so it's easy to reach out with any questions, or concerns. Being new to the whole school enrollment thing, I searched for a preschool for my daughter pretty late and was having problems finding a place my girl could fit in. My daughter has a huge personality and I didn't want her to get lost in a preschool with 20+ kids in the class. So I resorted to yelp and searched "best preschool near me" and found this gem. I was welcomed by the director Miss Roxy who helped me through the whole process and there just happened to be one spot left. After visiting so many schools and not feeling the vibe or energy, I immediately knew this is where I wanted her to be. Classes are small, the teachers know all the kids names, not just the kids in their class)... more importantly not only do they learn plenty of academics and social play but life skills. My daughter learned meditation and gratitude which is everything I try and teach her at home that I wish I learned early on in lIfe. She has been here for two years and I have seen such a tremendous growth in all aspects. She had both Miss Hannah's (yes, there were two) and it was such an amazing transition She never cried and adapted quickly. Currently she is with the big kids in Miss Laura's class in the yellow room and she is phenomenal! She definitely takes pride in their learning and loves all the kids like they are her own. She packs as much as she can into the three hours they are there while still balancing play. We absolutely loved this preschool. Our son initially went to some expensive Montessori school and used to cry every night before going, so we decided to make a change. It was the best decision ever. They teach human kindness and manners. My son was also well prepared for Kindergarten. The Staff is always happy to see you and they treat you like family. Such an amazing preschool! We've had two kids go to Discovery, our oldest went all 3 years and our 2nd child still attends. Both have been in Mrs Hannah's class and she is so loving and nice. She really was understanding & patient with both of the kids as they transitioned into preschool. My oldest especially had a hard time at first and would cry every day, but she helped him work through it. Mrs Laura, the transitional kindergarten teacher, is the absolute best and my child developed so much under her guidance. The school has a former teacher as the new director and she is running it great! The previous director was also really great, but had a lot on her plate which resulted in some communication issues sometimes. Our daughter has had a GREAT first year of preschool at Discovery! I can't believe how much progress she has made with her numbers, letters, everything! She absolutely loves her teachers in the red room Miss Hannah and Miss Cathie. Miss Hannah always greets her classroom with a warm smile and my daughter always looks forward to seeing her/showing her new things. The director Miss Maria is always available to ask questions at drop off/pick up and has been great with communication all year. She even goes above and beyond and sews many of the kids projects together on her own time. My daughter missed one project due to stitches and she was able to do both the next week so she didn't feel left out. On Tuesdays there is optional after-school gymnastics with My Gym mobile. What a blessing Discovery Preschool has been to our family. After months and months of searching and researching I found this wonderful school! My son's care means the word to me, so it was very important to find the right environment for him. And, as soon as we did the school tour and got through speaking with Director Miss. Maria, we knew this was the place for our son. I cannot say enough of the Director Miss Maria and my sons teacher Miss Laura and aid Miss Jasmine, they are WONDERFULL! The entire staff is truly amazing! They are very loving, compationate, understanding, patient, they are simply the best! I do not easily trust anyone with my son or kids, but they are astonishing. This is not an average school nor is it a daycare, this is a pre-school where your child is engaged and challenged, they are taught probably the best curriculum compared to any public school. They learn about art/artist, music/ musicians, geography, astronomy, science, nature, communities / culture, mathematics, phonics, and much,much more. Oh, they also have beautiful holiday programs and other great shows throughout the school year, along with a few field trips. But, most importantly they are encouraged play and have lots of fun while learning. The ratio at Discovery is 6:1 compared to public school 25:1. The attention is far to none! My only regret is not finding this school sooner. My son will start public school next Fall and it's just heart- breaking not being able to replicate the environment and level of education and care he has received here. My Son loved going to Discovery he is now in 1st grade and still asks to go back! They make the kids feel valued and loved. The teachers and director are amazing! In addition to the nurturing environment what he learned here carried over ,he was fully prepared for and excelled in Kindergarten! I enrolled my daughter here hoping that she will finally get to experience school. When the school year started, my daughter broke her arm so she could not attend the first month, and when it was her first day of school the teacher she had wasn't really welcoming. In fact, she asked about the WRONG arm, and my husband corrected her, the teacher responded with, "its okay, they don't know". LIKE?! giving off the idea that kids are dumb. the hell?????? Every time i picked up my daughter here after school, she always didn't seem happy. One point she had a scratch on her nose, I asked the teacher what happened and she said she "doesn't know". Ridiculous. The teacher was always giving me the vibe like she did not care. I always ask my daughter about her day, and she was always kinda quiet about it. It wasn't until we were driving home one afternoon and she said that she wanted to switch schools. I asked her why, and she said that her teacher is really mean to her and that she puts her in TIME OUT in the corner. She didn't know what it was because I never put my child in time out, and for the teacher to be doing that just baffles me. She basically put my child in distress, and she embarrassed her in front of the other kids. It makes me pretty sad cause my daughter is really loving, and caring. She loves to interact, and for her to be silenced just doesn't sit right with me and I'm glad that I pulled her out as soon as I did. I witnessed this first hand when they were performing on halloween, and my daughter was trying to converse with the other students but the student aid kept shushing her. I ended up pulling her out. Ms. Roxy, and the other teachers didn't even try to question as to why I was doing so. Little to no effort on their end. On the last day, the teacher literally just threw me the stuff that belonged to my daughter, didn't even say bye, didn't even acknowledge my daughter, NOTHING. Now my daughter always refers to that teacher as THE MEAN TEACHER and she says that she HATES that school. fuck this school. read more

Both children are students at Discovery and we ended up there after seeing the profound experience their cousin had when she was a student. The staff is exceptional and it starts with the Director, Maria. Maria runs a tight ship but is as compassionate and caring as you would want someone to be who is guiding the early education of your child. She has assembled an amazing staff of teachers and aides who love our children as their own. They have worked in concert to help our children learn the academic and social skills necessary to succeed in school. We opted to put our eldest in the five day program instead of going the 'free school' TK route through our district because of the experience we had in his previous years. Discovery's ratio of children to adults is better (6:1) and the half-day program was more suitable to his needs than the public school options. He gets all the attention he needs for his social growth, has learned all the letters and counts to 100 (so far) and is ready to take on Kindergarten in the fall. His teachers have sparked his curiosity and creativity and he has grown into a fine young man. Discovery has limited hours, so if you need all-day care, this is not the place for your family. If you have the flexibility and a responsible adult can pick up your child mid-day, you won't find a better place for your child to learn and grow. read more

Our son absolutely hated it here. He was hysterical at every drop off but I was told by the classroom assistant he was better once we left. Fast forward three weeks later and I am told by the director that I have a "miserable" child and they have "tried everything" and he was kicked out within his first month. Mind you this is after SIX 3-hour classes. Not sufficient time to nurture and acclimate a child let alone label him as miserable. Additionally, I was extremely underwhelmed by his teacher. The parent night lasted all of 10 minutes in which we were handed a print out that was read off and asked if we had questions. There was no passion or excitement- which could explain why my typically happy child dreaded coming here. Based on this experience I am confident in saying Discovery preschool is not equipped to handle a child that is having difficulty adjusting. Many parents, including myself, put their 3 year old in preschool solely for their development in hopes that it is a safe environment which was portrayed to us during our tour. That said, I believe the positive experiences here are had by those parents with kids that are easy and compliant so the teacher does not have to work too hard. Period. We could have had a more positive experience had the director spoken to us within a couple weeks about their concerns, and offered to agree on an action plan and if he is not in better spirits by x-date maybe this isn't the school for him rather than placing all the blame on a CHILD. Instead, I had to witness him being treated poorly right in front of me. I can't imagine how he was treated when we weren't there. Overall communication is lacking here. We will gladly be taking our son elsewhere that cares more about students and less about the school's "image". read more

This school was one of the BEST choices I could have made for my son. As a first time mom, I wanted to make sure my son was in the right kind of environment so he'd grow to love school and not dread going in each time. For me, this school is a perfect blend of everything I wanted for him! There is a great balance between learning/"classroom" time and play time, which I believe are equally important for preschooler's development. The set up is unique in that there is a 6:1 ratio of teacher to student, so he gets lots of individualized attention. During their classroom activities, the wonderful teachers are able to work with the students one on one, allowing them to learn as fast as their little minds want to go. The other unique aspect of the school is their "room to roam" time. The classrooms are open as well as the back patio, and the children are able to wander and choose which activities they want to work on during this time. This helps foster their independence. They still get outside play time as well, with sand toys and playground equipment! Daily snacks are always balance and nutritious and the teachers are great at helping picky eaters learn to try new foods. There is a variety of extras you can enroll your child in as well: lunch bunch is an extra hour after school where they eat their lunchboxes and get to play on the playground, and there are art, drama, and gymnastics classes after that you can sign your child up for as well. The kids even go on field trips! My 3yr old loved walking to the mailbox and posting a letter home, which arrived two days later. =) The best part of this school is the staff and administration. The director, Maria, has a TON of energy and is incredibly good at her job. She is always available to listen to concerns, soothe a crying child, and seems to be everywhere at once, lol. The teachers are dedicated and really a special group of people who genuinely care and are invested in the children. After a full school year I have NEVER seen or heard anything but wonderful from them. There is no gossiping, nastiness, or laziness that I've experienced at other schools. This school is run on the campus of a church but is not a religious preschool; the staff, however, perfectly models Christian principles. read more

My daughter has attended this preschool for two years and I couldn't be happier with her experience there. It is a small school...three classrooms, three main teachers with 3 assistants; even so, I am always impressed by how much feedback I receive from ALL of the teachers there about my daughter as she interacts with all 6 teachers during her day. This is a developmental preschool so most of the day is spent in play--inside, outdoors in two different areas or during "room to roam" where they can go to any classroom and play--which I was looking for, but there is some academics as well. My daughter has truly blossomed given so much choice for how her day goes but also being challenged in developmentally appropriate ways.
