I am a swimmer for over 42 years. I love love swimming at the J. The pool is so clean, welll organized by lifeguards, management, and maintenance crews. I start swimming at 6 opening time in the morning. Quiet, fresh, and fun to talk to the other swimmers. We have a challenge event to go to Catalina Island from LB from March and end in April. I almost finished one way to go there. I went to Catalina Island in the past and now I am back by swimming. Haha... super fun, relaxing in the beautiful upgraded heated pool, very spacious at the deck, lots of benches, and bbq area, jaccuzi, and etc. If you are a swimmer like me, you should come to try it out. If you love Aqua Aerobic, join the classes to workout w great music, awesome instructors everyday. You don't need to go to the other vacation resorts during Summer. This is a beautiful pool, really nice facilities all around... used to be fun when JCC employed knowledgeable professional, aqua aerobics instructors... Unfortunately, now there is one instructor who demands absolute silence in her class, barks at people who even greet each other or sing along; threatens removal from the pool - zero people skills Yet feels free to make chitchat when it occurs to her to speak... ie. Introducing her son (also employed at pool), asking participants' opinions etc. Targets participants to single out, name, blame & shame.. Incredible, after taking aqua aerobics for over a decade, - enjoying every moment - we have finally landed in a class- for the last time - where leader brings nothing new to the table in terms of actual instruction, but manages to wring every drop of joy in what used to be elevating fun workouts - taking it all entirely too seriously. read more

Several years ago, my son went through a very difficult racism incident at the Alpert JCC ECE that was handled poorly, which caused our family to not continue for TK. Recently, I decided to give the center another chance and upgraded to a family membership, hoping to qualify for a summer camp discount since the program was so expensive. The process for financial assistance took so long that months passed without any clear answer. By the time I got a clear answer on how much assistance I would qualify for, I had decided not to enroll my son and honestly forgot to cancel my membership and continued paying for gym membership through AAA which is $28 a month. I never once used their family membership and continued going under my regular one but their system didn't flag two memberships. When I realized what had happened this fall, I explained everything and asked for a fair resolution. The JCC admitted my membership was never used but said their policy doesn't allow refunds. They told me they were making an "exception" by refunding only three months, even though I'd been charged from March through October, seven full months. It's really disappointing that after returning in good faith, trying to rebuild trust after such a painful experience, the response felt so rigid and lacked empathy. Morally it feels wrong to be charged for something that I didn't receive or use. I truly hope leadership reconsiders how these situations are handled and communicates better across departments so other families don't go through the same thing. read more

Staff was incredibly rude and the facilities were dirty. Would not recommend to others

I reached out to the EEC a while back when my child was an infant. The Engagement Coordinator seemed so inconvenienced by me. I was asking pretty standard enrollment questions but she wouldn't give me a straight answer for anything. I asked about getting on the waitlist and was told it's $100 but then was also advised to become a member. Once I became a member I discovered the $100 was no longer required but I had already paid the money. I never complained or reached back out because honestly it all rubbed me the wrong way so much it made me realize it wouldn't be a good fit. I just took the $100 as a loss and a lesson. I've also heard from other friends with kids enrolled here that the waitlist policy is not as competitive or long as they try to make you believe. We're talking about toddlers, it just felt like such an icky way to treat people. read more

We cannot say enough good things about the ece program at JCC. Our son loves going to school, and has just blossomed as a tiny human. His teacher (ms mott) is such a blessing, and cares for each child as her own. We LOVE her!! From his speech and motor skills, all the way to developing life-long friendships. An added bonus for us parents, is the aspect of community and connecting with other families in the area. We look forward to events, all school Shabbat, etc, bc we have formed such great ties to other parents and their children. Really just can't say enough good things. Very appreciative our son landed a spot in this program. read more

It's the Alpert Corporate Center: the campgrounds are stunning but the people working there have only one aim, to grow the business. There is no sense of community, or care, or attention. Emily Gould of the ECE is an extremely talented BS person who will do great things for your child (such as putting him/her into a classroom with a decent teacher) but only if she personally likes you. We have friends who've donated a lot of money to this JCC, and Emily still treats them as s-h-i-t. It's always discouraging when a non-profit acts like a corporation, and when Emilys like this one can go on and on with no consequences for their inexcusable actions. read more

Every child needs to learn how to swim in the AJCC's Tiny Tots Swim Class. -Swim Class Price for non member such as myself: $95 for four weeks, 2 classes/week, class: 30 min -This breaks down to just under $12 a class! -Maximum students per class: 4. Each class has its own lane. -There are many class times to choose from. -Swim director, Ignacio, is always open to questions and his excellent customer service is also felt through all his swim staff. -Instructor is in the pool with students and is very proactive. -Showers and restroom are in a spacious, and always clean locker room right behind the pool. -There is a kiddy pool. My three year old daughter has attended the Tiny Tots class for almost a year now, and today was a huge milestone as she was able to swim unassisted for about ten feet! Over the year she has learned many water safety skills, such as lifting her herself out of the pool, floating on her back, holding her breath under water, etc. What sets AJCC's swim program apart from every other swim program is the instructors. You won't find dedicated, passionate, knowledgeable, and amazingly kid friendly instructors anywhere else. My daughter has done most of her classes with Antonio, and she currently takes classes from Bernardo. She has taken classes from many other instructors here, as instructors switch time slots from time to time. All the instructors here have their safety skills down, and my daughter has enjoyed classes with all of them. Thank you Myra, Stephanie, and Sarah and any other instructor I am missing! Antonio and Bernardo are the most efficient, experienced, and loved by all the kids. Though my daughter is in a class of four, Antonio and Bernardo have always made sure that each child is safe, having fun, and progressing on something new in each class. Very few instructors can multi task this way. AJCC's Swim curriculum is very organized. Each instructor knows exactly what level each student is and will let you know what stage in the curriculum your child is in. I didn't grow up as a swimmer, and Ignacio and Antonio have always been able to explain to me what each level in the curriculum consists of and the requirements needed to progress to another level. This info can also be found on their Web site. My daughter is now in Tiny Tots Level 3. She can hold her breath under water, swim unassisted for about ten feet, jump off the edge and swim, float on her back, go under water to pick up toys (on the swim stand not swim floor), and more. How I ended up choosing AJCC swim: Before attending AJCC my daughter and I took Mommy and Me classes at Aquatic Explorations and Safety Training in Los Alamitos. (The AJCC is planning to have Mommy and Me classes in the near future.) We had a blast at Aquatic Explorations. When my daughter was about two and half years old, we knew she was ready for classes without me, but sadly only privates were offered once toddlers turned three years old. In addition, privates were only fifteen minutes long . I still am very grateful for Aquatic Explorations and all the great instructors there, Guillermo and Michelle. Mommy and Me classes here were fun and the perfect stepping stone for my daughter before taking swim classes at the AJCC. I searched for a swim program that offered classes (not privates) for three-year olds at an affordable price. I've spoken to probably all the directors of swim at each top swim school that Yelp will mention in the city of Long Beach, including the YMCA, and no swim school comes close to AJCC's price. The most important part of the swim class is the instructor and the relationship they develop with the child. Even if there are cheaper and small swim classes elsewhere that I have somehow missed, we are not leaving the AJCC. The swim instructors, along with all who work at the AJCC, love what they do and are definitely not just there to get paid. Bernardo treated my daughter's swim class to ice cream after class last week. Even though my daughter takes classes from Bernardo now, Antonio still spends an extra five minutes working on techniques with my daughter after class. I want to thank every one at the AJCC, from parking security to the receptionists, maintenance workers, and of course all at Aquatics for always being kind and willing to help. My daughter and I aren't even members of the AJCC, and yet it feels like a second family to us. This review doesn't even do Aquatics and the AJCC justice. Every one needs to know how to swim. AJCC Aquatics is the place to learn. I hope this review helps parents looking for the best teachers for their children. Blessings Every One! Both of my kids attended the JCC for preschool, summer camps and after school program and it was a wonderful experience. The environment that the JCC created was an essential building block to to their continued education and development. I took my daughter here for swim lessons. The people in charge, Cecelia and Ignacio, are extremely difficult to reach and never return call backs. I've been trying to reschedule 3 makeup sessions and it's like pulling teeth. I get one answer from the instructor, and 2 different ones from both Ignacio and Cecelia. They are very unorganized. The first session was missed bc no one was even aware that her classes started that day. While her instructor was great at teaching my daughter, she will no longer be teaching there after this summer. This place came highly recommended but for scheduling alone, I'd go elsewhere. read more

The kids programs at the J are awesome! My kids attend Camp Komaroff and Kids-U and the programs are first rate, the staff really care about children and I trust them completely. We've been sending our kids to Camp and Kids-U for five years and I am impressed at how they consistently offer good programming. This is a wonderful community center open to those from all faiths. As members, my family participates in the preschool, summer camp, basketball, pool, gym and family activities. We LOVE swim lessons at the JCC. Ignacio the manager is amazing and so kind. He truly cares about your child and wants what is best for them. My three year old daughter is super particular on who her swim teacher is and they always go above and beyond to make sure she is happy. Our current teacher Sophia will be leaving at the end of this month for college and my daughter of course is super attached to Sophia and only wants her. Sophia included another teacher Britney in their lessons to try and get Evangeline to warm up to her. Evangeline still wasn't convinced after the lesson so they both got into the little pool with her and made her feel so special with stickers! Evangeline instantly warmed up to Britney and told me on the way home she will swim with her now. Which is HUGE if you know my child. I was just so impressed with how much they cared and tried to get her comfortable with Britney. Ignacio himself even tried last year to get her to swim with just him! We LOVE swim lessons at the Alpert JCC!! We highly recommend this place! We've been taking lessons here for over a year now. We started when my daughter was 4 yo. She started with group lessons last summer. There were 3-4 kids in a group. And then when school started back up in the fall, we needed a more flexible schedule, so we started private swim. It's more expensive, but has been REALLY worth it. My daughter just turned 5 yo and can swim the breaststroke with side breathing at least half the length of the pool. She can dive into the pool while sitting on her knees at the edge of the pool (don't know the term for it), she can dive for rings in the deep end, and is working on her backstroke. The best part is seeing how far my daughter has come with swimming. (In the beginning, she cried so much that I had to bribe her to keep taking lessons.) Now, her confidence in the water and her love for swimming is growing, thanks to this place and thanks to her instructor, Sophia! This summer, my 3 year old son started private swim with Mr. Bryant. He cried the first 5 minutes of his first lesson, but now, no more tears! Mr. Bryant has been a great instructor. In fact, ALL the teachers we've had, have been awesome. They follow the Learn to Swim Levels/Steps to teach water safety and build confidence in the water. I wish I had something like this growing up to teach me how to swim! And one of the best parts about this place... there is a 2 feet deep waddling pool that my kids can play in before and after their lesson. They can work on some of the skills they learned in lessons, or just have fun in the water. In short, definitely check out this place! read more

As much as I wish there was a Catholic Community Center, you gotta hand it to the folks here: this is a nice set up. Open to everyone in the community, this place does seem like a really well managed place that offers fitness options, community, etc. Look online for more details. Since this place is 5 blocks from my home, I opt to swim here (versus driving all the way down to the Belmont Pool). The place offers $5/session swims in a beautiful, clean, 6 lane, 50 meter pool. The sessions are sold in 10 increments ($50 dollars for a book of 10). Great hours, and lifeguard on staff all hours during opening. I have yet to hit it when it is crowded. Although I'm not sure what the memberships cost here to use the gym, it'll definitely set you back more than your 24 hour fitness membership, but definitely offers an upgrade to the stinky pit/meat markets of the 24 hour/Bally's/LA Fitness gym options in Long Beach. We have clients that are holocaust survivors, one just recently passed away so now we just service the wife, but JFCS has funded in-home care for them throughout the years. Beautiful place to come to get your workout done. The grounds are immaculate, and the entrance to the JCC just had another makeover, adding even more ambiance. The gym is absolutely awesome, and well maintained. The machines are basically brand new as of a few months ago, replete with TV's, plug ins for iPods, etc. It is not a great big huge gym, but what is there is clean, pleasant, and positive. Staff is accomodating and willing to answer any questions. And hey, on your way in, 80% of the attendants at the front desk entrance are genuinely happy to see you!! Thumbs up!! read more

This place is a true community center, as its name implies. Most people may be put off by the Jewish in it's name but it is truly for the everyone. I've been coming here with a group of guys since 2001 when our YMCA closed and this was the only private facility with full sized basketball courts to accommodate our group. I did not realize how huge this place is! They also have THE BEST preschool in Long Beach, with its own playground. The pool is always available. I use the place for the courts, gym and occasional fitness classes (TRX, Pilates, spinning. Have not tired the Barre Blitz class yet) They also have several multipurpose rooms for weddings, events and social activities. I always see different community and civic groups taking advantage of their spaces It is dedicated to maintaining Jewish identity and culture. My 5 year twins have been taking swim lessons at the JCC for the past two years. They have matriculated from Tiny Tots to Advanced Beginners, where they are now. What sets the swim instruction at the JCC apart from other group lessons is the dedicated and caring staff. Knowing that little kids will be little kids, there have been times where an extra class is added in order to make sure that the number of students within the class remains small and the children can focus during their lessons. As a result, my kids are both able to swim 25 yards (the full length of the pool) and are practicing on refining different strokes. Pretty sure they have better technique in the pool than I do at this point. As I mentioned, caring staff: My daughter was having a bad day, because being 5 is hard, and Bernardo took the extra time to pull her aside to make her feel comfortable before starting her lesson. She finished with a smile and headed to the wading pool to play where Bernardo came back out to make all the kids a "noodle raft." The kids love the aquatics program here. We often come for a lesson and stay to play until the sun sets. read more

Within this short period of time, he has made such incredible progress thanks to the truly amazing swim instructors/lifeguards (my son's instructor is Tony and the manager is Ignacio). As working parents, there's nothing more challenging than figuring out what to do with kids during summer break. Of course we've tried several camps in the area, but we've found a home at Camp Komaroff. My two boys are ready to start their third year, and they are always excited to hear what's happening in the summer ahead. Each week of summer camp has a different theme, and activities based around that theme. At first, we didn't know what the atmosphere would be like, we've tried so many camps around Long Beach, including beach camp and camps at different parks. But the counselors create a great sense of community, and the facilities are top notch! It's good to know our kids are having fun at a safe, clean environment. We've been a part of the ECE family for about 3 years. From the Y'ad B Y'ad class to preschool; the environment is warm and loving and all the teachers and staff that we have come across are personable and great. My daughter always comes home happy and she is engaging in fun, creative play based activities while still learning new concepts. We appreciate all that the staff has done to ensure the facility is safe and they have gone above and beyond with the precautions that they have taken due to the pandemic. The facilities and classrooms are clean, large, and open & we especially love the fully equipped outdoor playground. My daughter also enjoys the various enrichments offered from dance to art to gymnastics. We are excited to have my younger daughter start at the school soon as well. We love the AJCC's spectacular preschool, clean gym, and wonderful aquatics program! My son has been swimming year round since 2016. When we first signed up for group lessons, he was not confident at all in the water, and he refused to put his head under. After months of lessons, and the hard work of caring instructors, my son now loves swimming. He has confidence in the water, and looks forward to lessons. The instructors make the lessons fun and educational. They are kind and patient, and take the time to learn the skill levels and needs of each child. Lessons are held rain or shine, and swimming in the winter is no problem at all! We have been students at the preschool (ECE) since 2015.
