So, check this out. I brought Benton a cabinet door that was cracked and in pretty bad shape (it was from a 1987 kitchen) and Benton did his best to explain the type of work he could do to repair it. After a couple of phone calls, I understood that the tooling and dies that his shop has is set up for newer cabinets and to repair my door would be very expensive. After he quoted me the cost, I declined the offer. He then had the cabinets dropped off at my office. I did not ask him to do that. Here is the point of this review-I was NOT a paying customer and District Woodworking took time out of their day so I wouldn't have to take time out of my day to pick up the doors at their office. Together with four other residents of my building in downtown DC, I searched for months for a contractor to design and create a custom solution for my closets. The existing closet doors were heavy and made it impossible to access half of the closet at any time. We needed a solution that would allow us greater versatility when it came to accessing the inside of the closet, that would look classy, and that wouldn't break the bank. We spoke to national brands that had offices in DC/Maryland/Virginia as well as smaller shops. We got outrageously pricey quotes and limited options from nearly everyone we spoke to, but we kept on searching. Finally, we found District Custom Woodworks and gave them a chance. The yelp reviews were great and we were able to reach somebody quickly when we called. Benton, the owner of the company, came out to our building to meet with us and show us some options, and we could immediately tell that he was an honest, high-quality craftsman who would do his best to help us. Benton measured our closets, showed us options, talked through the prices of various add-ons, and then helped us understand what would work best for each of us. He had a good selection of options. The process was professional at every stage, if a bit slow. The pricing was honest, and there were no surprises. To be clear, custom woodwork is not cheap, especially in the DC area and especially if you want a high-quality product. Just buying non-custom closet doors from Home Depot and paying someone to install them properly is relatively expensive, so you have to keep in mind that having someone design, cut, and install custom doors to fit your unique space will be more expensive. If you choose the most basic options, don't expect to pay less than $2000. That sounds like a lot, but since Benton runs a small business, he is able to set a price that is more competitive than his competitors, so even $2000 is far lower than the $4000+ quotes we had received elsewhere for inferior products. (Note that even some national brands that are comparatively priced end up being more problematic, because they'll design you a set of closet doors themselves, but then have a third party do the installation. This is less than ideal; you want the same company responsible for the whole process if you want to avoid problems down the line, so the fact that Benton's company does the process from soup to nuts is a huge advantage.) After we made our product selections, decided the terms, and submitted our payments, we were all set. From that point on, Benton took the lead and got the project done. We must be honest: it was not as quick as we would have liked. I think we may have overwhelmed Benton because, by agreeing to do work for all five of us at the same time, Benton and his team had to design, source, cut, and install a lot of doors at once. And given that this is a small business, I think it took a bit longer than anticipated. Note also that custom woodwork installation is an iterative process; sometimes, the existing infrastructure in our closet frames (which Benton has nothing to do with) presented its own problems, and it was his first time working with our building. Nevertheless, I want to reiterate that Benton is a clear communicator and an honest person, and even if progress was a bit slow, we got everything we wanted in the end, for a competitive price. The end product--as evidenced by the attached photos--is exactly what I wanted, and it works perfectly. If he does custom closet doors for you, ask him if a "magnet solution" will be a possibility for you; the magnets ended up making my doors particularly functional and durable.) I was so satisfied with Benton's work that I hired District Custom Woodworks separately to install custom shelves in my hall closet and laundry closet, and those custom shelves were likewise extremely well done and were exactly what I had asked him to make, again for a reasonable price. Save your time. They won't come out and set foot on your property without a $500 charge. So they require you spend hours of your own time up front before you even get a phone call with them. So after spending an hour and a half measuring the area we were thinking about building some built ins, drawing dimensioned diagrams per their request and sending them photos, they then spent 30 minutes on the phone asking me questions I couldn't answer (I'm not a carpenter, I don't know the best way to add the crown mounding). Half way through they were compiling a list of additional photos and dimensions they wanted me to send. So I stopped at that point. I've already wasted nearly 2 hours of my time doing your job, and you want me to do more because you are unwilling to send sales or estimators out to meet with clients and see the space? We had a 5-star experience with District Cabinetry (also known as District Custom Woodworks)! It started with the careful and thoughtful consideration of our needs and preferences in discussions with owner Benton Chrea. He asked great questions and listened carefully to our answers! He came up with a preliminary design that we modified with his help into its final form. We were so pleased in the planning stage for the initial project caused us to add 2 other projects for other rooms. In the end, he did a huge built-in for the study, another large one for the master bedroom, and transformed a very complicated master closet footprint into a design that maximized every bit of space available. He personally visited the house twice to ensure good measurements and to be sure that we all visualized the same end product. Benton will tell you that I have a lot of construction experience (as a developer and builder), and I quizzed him on technical details of the design that he was unused to from customers. Let us just say that we were at the same time discriminating and exacting and he had excellent answers to all of my concerns. The project was finished on time (actually, a little earlier than originally planned) and was finished exactly on budget. Frankly, in the beginning, I thought the proposed charges were kind of high, but we had seen some of his work and his showroom and had developed faith in him, his product and team. The final product is beautiful, met all our design and quality goals, and is clearly engineered and manufactured down to the millimeter. His installation team was fantastic! They spent the better part of 3 days installing and tweaking everything, making sure we understood how to take out the drawers (a little tricky, as they are fancy, really nice, European hardware), etc. The installers were friendly, careful, respectful of our home and were clearly focused on achieving a quality result and pleasing us. So, in the end, my concerns over price were entirely unfounded, because the time invested in creating the design, the quality of the actual product and the care and professionalism of the installers proved to me that my wife was right - we really should pick District Cabinetry for our project! We unhesitatingly endorse Benton and District Cabinetry! We love and use our 3 built-ins every day and appreciate their work (and our investment) every time we use it! We just finished building a pretty complex home and this vendor is at the top of our list in every respect. Our biggest regret in our new home is that we had to buy our kitchen from our builder, Toll Brothers. We would have much preferred to spend that budget at District Cabinetry to get a unique and custom kitchen adapted precisely to our tastes and needs, where our smaller projects tell us that they would have excelled!
