Decided to try this new restaurant out last night and boy was I glad I came back to it. Was planning to check out some new places on Granby but circled back to Ptown. This place has a good location, off street parking and food to die for! The menu and food tastes SO similar to another place I used to love. The fried shrimp appetizer was fantastic and yes, I ate every piece of the breading that was so good. I ordered the crab cakes (2 large, mostly meat for $14 ) and my SO ordered the meatloaf. Both dinners were great, plentiful and just downright delicious...the cornbread, mac & cheese and collards - ummm ummm good. I can't find any other description to fit how happy I was eating my meal. Our server, Kiara, was very pleasant and attentive as well. My only non-positive comment would be to management (whom we never saw during our visit)...we had a very difficult time with table conversation due to extremely loud patrons standing in the middle of the dining area talking, sometimes shouting. The bar is right at the door entry and no sign to advise of self-seating through to dining side. The long to-go line looked like folks waiting on dining until someone advised of self-seating. I am urging you (the reader) to come here. Good vibes, great drinks (shout out to the amazing bartender) - music is really good and the FOOOOOOOOOOD! My Nephew treated to this place and it was disgusting. I had the smothered turkey wings greens and Mac. The turkey was wet and soggy, I was expecting a crisp roasted texture. The gravy was scorched, the greens had more stems than leaves, and the Mac n' Chez was dry. I was told the cornbread was good. By now I've lost my appetite. My son in law had the lamb chops they were thick over cooked and dry. I was in town visiting Family when I was served this mess. I'm a Culinary Chef myself I know good food and this is not it. My experience was during the Pandemic therefore we had carry out. Had it been Dine in the Owner Management Somebody would've been refunding my meal cause it was garbage. Don't miss it! We liked District so much on Day 1 of our stay that we went back on Day 2. We had their signature appetizer of sausage and rice, smothered in a rich, slightly tangy onion gravy. And this is officially my new go to spot for soul food. Amongst everything else I loved the cleanliness. I came in on Friday about 4:00 p.m.; there were some grubhub folks ahead of me; the worker said, she'd be right with me. 7-8 minutes later; she asked, may I help you? I said, I would like to dine in. She said, okay stand over there and someone will be right with you and she walked off. I waited another 7-8 minutes, faked a phone call on my cell phone and walked out the door. This was one of my fav soul food spots but I would not recommend coming on a weekday after 6:30 because we BARELY was even noticed. We waited awhile before finding someone to give us a menu and then we waited 15 min for someone to take our order and mind you , ...... We are the only ones here. I've gone to the district many times though I don't have a good picture of my usual order. I usually get a whiting dinner with Mac n cheese and yams (sweet potatoes). Recently I tried the fried apple pie and it was yummy! The portions are good and usually the food is tasty. Since I've been so often they do have their off days, BUT I always come back so that's a testament to their good days! They don't have a lot of seating so I usually order to go, but sometimes they take for ever to answer the phone because they are so busy. It's taken me a few days to write this review because every time I think about the meals I had there, I just get overwhelmed with joy. So I was attending a conference in Portsmouth and someone mentioned they were going here for dinner one night. I said let me check it out so that day I went for lunch. I really wanted yams with my meal but they were out, no biggie so, I got the fried chicken entree with rice and gravy and Mac and cheese as sides. So let me start by saying, they offered me hot sauce and I figured I'd need it for the chicken but boy was I wrong. The chicken was seasoned to perfection. One bite in and my tastebuds were in my mouth line dancing. Properly seasoned fried chicken is a art to be mastered, many have tried and few succeed, but babe, this chicken right here was seasoned so well, piping hot. It was a balance of perfected flavors. My oh my. Now I have this thing with rice and gravy, I LOVE IT, but I rarely order it from anywhere because good gravy is really hard to find. So I took a chance and this was thee best rice and gravy I've ever had. I like a beef based gravy which this was. Again, perfectly seasoned, great consistency served with white rice. I ate every single piece of rice. I left nothing in the container. I debated on going back and getting another takeout side of it to get me through the afternoon. The Mac and cheese was good, not the best I had but I would absolutely order it again. It was good but I've had better. That didn't matter and it didn't deter me from bringing my family back that night to get dinner. I had to try the yams and when we pulled up I saw fresh yam boxes outside near the trash so I knew they had them. So we all got chicken wing entrees with various sides. This time I got yams and rice and gravy (whatever if your side eyeing me for the carb indulgent day I had, lol) MY GOD IN THE HEAVENS ABOVE, THESE YAMS ARE THE BEST I'VE HAD ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY. There I've said it. My eyes were rolling back in my head as I was eating these yams. I am literally still trying to figure out the flavor profile so I can replicate them at home. It was such a beautiful balance between sweet and buttery goodness. Nothing overpowered and you could still taste the yams. The Yams alone are worth the six hour drive from my hometown. Do not judge a book by its cover... When I first arrived I was a little skeptical. I walked into the building and I immediately saw the sign that said seat yourself and someone will be right with you. At that point I got super happy. I get to choose if I wanted to be in a corner alone or around others. Next, Dreen (the server) came over and greeted my guest and I. Dreen was so nice and friendly the whole time I was there. The food was delicious! My silverware was clean and the restaurant was not crowded at that time. They had several people coming in ordering to go. Big mike is the name of the cook I think. We hosted a party of 14 people for dinner. Our server, Keshara, was calm, organized and very helpful. Even substitutions for a couple of items that were sold out were great. The food, again, did not disappoint. It was the very definition of comfort food. The prices are reasonable and the portions were large. If you are looking for some good home cooking, this is the place. Food was great. Somebody's grandma taught them well! I had the fried shrimp with collards and mac n cheese. The shrimp was cooked *perfectly* and the batter was just right. Made me want to try the other fried seafood they have on the menu. The collards were good, not overcooked and had good flavor, although they came out a little cooler than I like. The mac was also tasty. My husband got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and collards. The mashed potatoes were homestyle, dirty with brown gravy. My husband really enjoyed the meatloaf, and liked that it wasn't smothered with ketchup. He said it was better than his grandma's! Here is my 2 cents from a Sat night visit: -dirty -menu on website TOTALLY inaccurate and misleading. all they have are burgers and a few other things. NO seafood -served 4 of our party of 5 and we al had to wait another 10 min for the 5th plate -our waitress was good -clearly this is a drinking establishment with burgers as a side interest -They say they are known for their burgers, but my bacon burger with blue cheese was gross. it's bacon jam (couldn't really find any bacon, although there seemed to be a hint of a taste) and the blue cheese was gross too read more

I've had the pleasure of having the smothered porkchops, chicken wings, cabbage, macaroni and cheese, collards, fried catfish and cornbread and they were ALL delicious. Seasoned to perfection! I love sweet cornbread so I was over the moon about this one. Service has been good the 4 times that I've been. The food was really good! I got the wings and the flavor was sweet, yet spicy -- it was a taste I've never had which was great because there's not too many wing flavor variations these days.
