Came here on a Thursday night looking for food since everything else in the area was closed. Was pleasantly surprised to walk in on karaoke night. We ordered drinks, wings & pizza. I wouldn't order the pizza again but the karaoke show made up for everything the pizza was lacking. The bar tenders were both lovely & chatty & gave us the low down on the schedule for the week. This is definitely a locals bar with a fun and friendly atmosphere. We were there specifically to hear the band. There are lots of tv's, a big bar and tables and some electronic dart boards. This is the kind of place that everyone knows your name. Loved it. We had good service - maybe a tad slow but they were getting busy and she was training someone. We ordered the teriyaki wings and chicken basket. My husband said the wings were really good. And they were big and juicy. Another couple joined us and we shared and they said the same thing. No less then orders of 10. The chicken basket was just ok. The fries were cold and the chicken a bit overdone. The prices were reasonable too. I didn't feel like anything was overpriced. And they have a HH until 7. I think it's drinks only. No food specials....but I could be wrong. If you like a good, locals bar then stop in. Nothing fancy. I recently ordered from The Barrel 2 and ordered a burger, but unfortunately, my experience was not great. Firstly, the burger was incredibly small. I mean, it was so small that it looked like a slider. I felt like I needed a magnifying glass to find it. I understand portion control, but this was just ridiculous. To make matters worse, the burger was also undercooked. I asked for it to be cooked well done. but when I took a bite, it was still pink and raw in the middle. Overall, I was disappointed with my meal. I hope the restaurant can improve its portion sizes and cooking techniques in the future. read more

Well just bless the heart of my hotel concierge who said I would have no reason to come out in this direction. Turns out there was a local rockabilly band playing at this bar during my trip, and I prioritize live music above most things, so this is where I came. The band was fantastic. Even better were the regulars who welcomed me like I had been coming there for years. I got to learn a bit about the history of the bar, and meet the husband and wife duo who own the joint. I am so sorry I didn't make it for the party the next evening - congrats from NY 6 months later! Better late than never I hope ;) Their wings are tender and juicy, and they have these high proof jello shots which are risky but delicious. Worth a visit if you're seeking a live act or a chill night with some locals. read more

70 South was playing, so we made the trek from Yorktown to experience once again this fun and friendly place! A couple of excellent walk-ons joined the band and also played and sang when the band took a break. We already feel like regulars here. A sweet customer was having a birthday and she was serenaded with Happy Birthday by the entire bar! And our server remembered our order from our last visit! This place is a hidden gem. The ambiance was very warm and welcoming, the food was absolutely delicious (and the pricing was very affordable, definitely get more bang for your buck here). I stumbled upon this bar some months ago as I was going to the ABC store in the Churchland Square Shopping Center. I always thought it was closed until one day I actually noticed the "open" sign was lit up so I figured I'd see what it was about. I've been in there maybe 5 or 6 times in the past and last night I wanted to get out for a few so I hopped in the car and drove there at about 11:30pm. There were only a few people in there which was cool and as I sat at the bar the bartender let me know it was Last call as they were closing at 12am last night. I ordered a Bourbon and ginger ale and checked with the bartender to make sure I can place an order of wings since they were closing soon, she gladly took my food order and the mild wings came out very fast! I played a few games on the electronic device on the table, I made my $1 stretch. There are two TVs in here so you can watch sports. There's also a pool table here. What stood out me last that I didn't notice before is that they have happy hour from 11am-7pm EVERYday. Its hard to find happy hours on the weekend so I'll keep that in mind. I have only been here twice with my husband and another couple that we are great friends with (who come here quite often). I have to admit, because I am not a fan of anything Portsmouth, I wasn't expecting much, but I was highly impressed. On both occasions, our servers were polite, professional, friendly and attentive. It's clean, well maintained, and we didn't have to ask for anything (i.e. - condiments, napkins, silverware), it was all where it belonged - placed right in front of us! Our drinks were well prepared and our food was delivered promptly. The only downside (I know, I know.....) is that I love to have ranch dip with my wings....it was provided, of course, but it tasted like watered down Hidden Valley Ranch. If they could style their dip after Marzetti's Ranch Dip (not dressing) it would have been PERFECT!! Overall, this place has been one of the most enjoyable that we have been too in a long time (besides our regular places). We will definitely be coming back!! read more

The quintessential neighborhood bar. The waitstaff get to know you and will typically have your usual drink order right out to you as soon as you sit down. The wings are always fantastic and you can't beat their prices. They have karaoke every Thursday from 7 to 11 and it's always a good time. We the barrel! read more

I love The Barrel. This is one of my favorite places to go! Kind of like "Cheers" in Portsmouth with delicious affordable food and drinks. They have live music, which is my personal favorite & they are the best bands in Tidewater! Since Chuck bought the place a few years ago he has done wonders and it shows in all the return customers he has there. I forgot to mention that I live in Va Beach but choose to drive to P-town often (over VB bars)for the music, the friends & staff I have come to know and love. The prices on drinks is awesome. However... the food is awful for the prices they charge. The ribeye sandwich the steak was cheese slice thin, on a hamburger bun with a smear of mayonnaise one piece of lettuce and a thin slice of tomato. read more
